Lessons in the Pursuit of Happyness

The Pursuit of Happyness is an American movie, based on the life of American entrepreneur Chris Gardner, which specifically sheds light on the period of his life when he was homeless. The movie was released in the year 2006 and was directed by Gabriele Muccino. Highlighting the struggle period of Gardner's life, while being homeless and father of an almost five-year-old son, the movie has provided some life lessons for all the viewers. The main character was facing economic issues due to the loss of his job and had to face the relationship issues, which resulted in divorce and left him with the responsibility of his son. The movie the Pursuit of Happyness may have been the source of acknowledging the struggle of the American entrepreneur, however, it also provides some life lessons of enduring the difficult times of life, while constantly putting effort to make the things work, instead of backing out and losing hope.

The Pursuit of Happyness depicts that Gardner invested all his savings in scanner devices and had to face economic issues, as he could not meet the required number of sales. He could not get a proper job but got an unpaid internship. The relationship difficulties ended in divorce and the financial difficulties made him homeless, as his house was garnished. He worked hard to achieve the sales target while caring for his five years old son and spending nights in shelter homes. He finally succeeded in achieving the sales target and got a permanent position, which was a great achievement in his life, at that time. Later, he became one of the most famous entrepreneurs in the United States of America (Muccino).

The story of the film is autobiographical and has used cinematic opportunities to shed light on the struggles of the main character. The characters are believable, as the autobiographical account is evident from the plot of the movie. The actors are also appropriately cast, and perfectly shed light on the real-life characters. The theme of the film is the financial and relationship struggle of Gardner, which is explored through the plot of the film. The plot, acting, and other cinematic elements contribute to the directors' presentation of the real-life story. Moreover, the setting and locale of the film are appropriately selected, which contribute to the realistic presentation. The camera angles are also used quite effectively to enhance the ideology, the director wants to communicate to the viewers (Depedri, 23).

The film has also utilized the symbols to efficiently shed light on the condition, as well as the attitude of Gardner towards the difficulties of his life. The symbols are also used to shed light on his capabilities and the lack of the availability of opportunities or resources on making progress, which he finally gets. The film also contains the mise-en-scene, which provides the commentary on the thematic approach and perspective of the director. One such scene is the encounter of Gardner and Mr. Twsitle on the crowded road, which critically highlights the busy life and schedules of the public and the efforts of Gardner to get a permanent job (Kurniawan, 15).

One of the most important life lesson promoted by the film is that the children have to face the circumstances of the relationship issues of their parents. They have to face the dilemma of being with their mother or father. On the other hand, being a single parent is an equally tough and demanding job, which aches the hearts of the parents as well, as they have to depend on others for the wellbeing of their child, in order to earn a living for them. Another important life lesson shared by the film to all the viewers is that they should never give up on their dreams. Being poor is not a crime and it should not take away the chance of dreaming from a person. However, dreaming can provide the courage of making the effort and turning the dreams into reality (Depedri, 30).

One of the most important aspects of the movie, which is also a life lesson, is that a person should always be ready for the tough times, as the conditions can become hard at any time. Moreover, there is no need to panic during the dark times of life, but the person should take the opportunity to relax and reflect back on life. This is also an opportunity to explore the hidden talents and make use of them. However, all the struggles and efforts should be directed towards the goal and should not be just a waste of time. The movie has highlighted that the struggle and efforts of any person do not go in vain, likewise, a person cannot make progress until he puts all his efforts to achieve his target (Kurniawan, 18).

The Pursuit of Happyness sheds light on the struggle of Chris Gardner to get a permanent job and provide better opportunities for life to his five-year-old, who is his responsibility after his divorce. The movie has been presented in a quite realistic and convincing manner, as it is an autobiographical account of the struggling period of the American entrepreneur. The movie has provided the life lessons of not losing heart in the difficult times of life. It also highlights that a person should be well prepared for the tough times of life and even if he is not, he should not panic in such situation but relax and think of the ways to get out of the situation. Constant struggle and effort is the key to progress and one should never forget that.

Introduction

World is like a platform where people come and go, and it is a spontaneous process. There would be a lot of people who will arrive and depart, taking into account a wide range of perspectives. According to Oscar Wilde,

In order to live one has to be itself and living demands strength to adhere to persistence. It is important to know that life is a juggler’s trick, several perspectives, and a million manipulations still perfect. Life is all about one’s grooming and it can only be done by considering what we think about ourselves. The most significant goal of life is personal tranquility and mental peace. Introduction

In this generation, many people of all ages are slowly becoming obese simply because they opt to eat fast food rather than home-cooked meals. Accurately, every individual need food to survive but preferring to ingest fast food and not home cooked meal is not the most ideal choice. Restaurants, as well as other fast food enterprises, have foods that contain high amounts of salt, fat as well as sugar which is not good for your body. Everything ingested in the body should be taken in moderate amounts. There exists a lot of difference between fast food and home cooked especially when it comes to convenience, eminence as well as preparation time. Health experts often associate any health issue with the type of food we eat and thus highly recommend ingesting the right food in your body. Fast food has been blamed to be the leading cause of obesity across the globe and this is the core reason why homemade food is recommended at all times.

When it comes to nourishing the body and mind, nothing is much better and satisfying than preparing your very own food from scratch, using ingredients that are of high quality (GORD). Additionally, you get an opportunity to use ingredients that have low amounts of sodium and fat making it easier to serve the meal with love. Own-cooked meals are also made using fresh ingredients such as vegetables making the food healthy and nutritious (Mills). Fast food meals, on the other hand, are meals that have been made using a lot of saturated fat and sodium which ends up being unhealthy and not nutritious enough.

Additionally, home-cooked meals do play a part in bringing the family together as they are expected to sit on one table and enjoy the meal (Tuttle). Children especially have been known to greatly benefit from the norm of eating meals together as a family. Family meals do help in offering a window for sharing the day’s happenings and generates a relaxing transition from day’s work to a slower-rapid evening.

Compared to fast food meals, home-served meals are much safer as the tools as well as ingredients used to prepare the meals are well cleaned and stored (LAURA). Moreover, the home-served meals are much cheaper and cost-effective if proper planning is used to help keep the meals interesting as well as palatable. Depending on what meal you’re cooking, the cost being used can be cheaper as well. Cooking your very own food gives you the peace of mind that goes hand in hand with having total control over the quality and kind of ingredients you will use and the degree of cleanliness that is being employed to prepare the food (Stender). Fast food is always served right in front of you, is sometimes cheaper to buy and is often fast to cook but it never offers the satisfaction home-cooked meals offer.

However, people continue to consume and ingest fast food as it is more immediate, faster to make and can be consumed anywhere something home-cooked meals doesn’t offer. Due to the busy schedule, many working citizens have, fast food is the only solution to their problem. Despite all these, home cooked meals will always be the best as they offer a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment knowing the ingredients used and health benefits to be encountered later. Additionally, home-cooked meals provide a sense of belonging for families especially children. With home-cooked meals, you are assured of reducing the risk of being obese as other health-related issues. So, the next time you prefer to buy fast foods instead of cooking your own food, think again.

Homosexuality is a very sensitive issue. In many areas of the world, homosexuality is considered a serious sin and people are subjected to serious and cruel punishments on having a relationship with the people of same-sex. Much work has been done on this topic since the beginning of times. This topic has always been an issue of hot discussion due to its sensitive and controversial nature. Scholars, experts, storytellers, writers, journalists, movie makers, and many other people belonging to creative fields have tried in their own unique way to express their personal opinion about the issue (Faye).

Hollywood, as it has always kept up the tradition of going ahead with unique ideas about everything, has also not remained far behind regarding this topic as well. There are a number of movies, dramas, short films, telefilms and tv series that have been made on the topic under discussion. There is no piece of art in Hollywood that had been made on homosexuality and has not raised the controversy on the topic. Every single movie or drama made on the topic under discussion, whether in favor or against has stirred a controversy (Krason). One of such remarkable movies is “Boys Beware”.

Writing processes helps the writer to generate strong and focused work. The event of ‘writing course’ holds great significance in my life. I learned many new things in the writing session that improved my overall writing ability. The course was effective for me as it played a significant role in the development of my writing skills. My writing experience helped to change and grow. The semester polished my writing skills as I realized the changes. The writing semester helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses in writing. In the writing course, I had to compose several essays each with a new method that helped me to progress on course objectives. I employed the methods of synthesis and evaluation that resulted in the enhancement of my critical thinking and developed personal responsibility.

The event means a lot to me because it made me a better writer. I believe the course improved my critical thinking significantly that it is now one of my strength. I used my critical thinking in writing different essays that portrayed the relationship between the symbols and the metaphors. It is only through consistent practice and learning that I overcome my weaknesses in writing. When I compare my present writing with the older one, I can see the difference. I learned an important aspect of the good thesis is sound research and evaluation of the sources. I developed essential skills that helped me to find authentic sources and research became one of my strength. I used to rely on others for research, but the course helped me to use my ability to do sound research. Self- monitoring is another strength that helps me to keep track of my writing and focus on the right dimension.

I struggled the most in writing thesis because it is not that easy to produce an effective thesis. The first step in writing my thesis was searching for the right topic, and it took me one whole week. I knew the thesis requires patience and takes time so I decided to choose an interesting topic that could hold my interest. To select an effective topic I needed to identify my determination and purpose. At the initial stage, I limited the scope of what I needed to search so that it could generate potential and appealing content.

I managed to consider only the most relevant articles that supported my thesis and work. After the selection of the topic, I needed to produce adequate evidence that could support my claim. After thorough research and consistent efforts, I was able to design an influential thesis statement. I searched a lot and was able to derive relevant articles from good journals. It is important for the writer to use well recognized and authentic journals that increase the chances of acceptability of the thesis. I learned in the writing course about the significance of authenticating sources.

After finding enough evidence and supporting material I encountered difficulty in transforming the ideas of other writers in my thesis. It required a lot of skills to present the thoughts and views of other authors in the form of a literature review. In a literature review, I needed to build a link of supporting evidence with my work and research topic. I believe without the writing course I would not have been able to develop a well- organized thesis. Before starting my thesis, I needed to make a case and structure the evidence in an organized manner.

I made the most dramatic improvements in writing my thesis and getting my thoughts organized. When you decide to write a thesis, you need to convert the thoughts to words, and I think my knowledge about writing allowed me to transform my ideas into words. The evaluation of what I produced reflects the structure of my thesis. The beauty of the writing reflects the structure used by the writer, and I managed to maintain connections through the thesis. The selection of words and texts helped me to transform my views into the thesis. I experienced dramatic changes in the organization of thesis, and I produced texts that produced in-depth analysis. The whole thesis appeared to be unified and connected that reflects the significant improvements in my writing.

There are many aspects of the essays of the course that makes me proud. One of my essay that I would never forget and is the one I wrote about ‘racism.' The essay helped to explore the darker side of the world, and I was able to use my writing ability to transform the ugly world into my essay. The essay makes me proud because I realized I improved massively during and after the course. The learning about writing gave me the power to use my ideas and creativity to assess different aspects of the world and reality.

The event changed me as I managed to generate complete subjectivity in my writing. I feel I mastered my objective of producing sound and effective content. I learned to use correct sentence structure and format that adds more vividness to my writing. I have always been a good thinker, but I lacked writing skills to transform my thoughts into language. The essay on ‘racism’ makes me proud because I managed to present the issues of black community in the most impressive manner. I believe it is the power of words that transform thoughts and the world. The essay was so powerful and effective that I scored the highest grade. Organization of an essay plays a significant role in the presentation of the essay and a good framework reflects the beauty of essay. While Starbucks discontinuation of plastic straws may hardly affect the overall waste percentage, however, it serves as a good strategy to enhance their corporate image as a brand concerned about the environment. With this background, Davis provides a good reason for the readers to buy into the arguments she makes.

In the article, Davis uses logical arguments as well as counter-arguments to support her distrust of Starbucks' campaign. Hence both arguments and counter-arguments presented by Davis find support in the evidence, even if their sources were not cited in the form of hyperlinks.

After examining Starbucks decision and justifications, Davis leads the reader back to her main thesis; corporations are banking on environmentalism as a marketing strategy. She writes, “Although Starbucks has made an effort to aid the environment, this is not the most beneficial way they can help” CITATION Dav19 \l 1033 (Davis, 2019). Although the position taken by the author is strong, the approach is neither forceful nor does it indicate a strong bias. Instead, Davis first credits Starbucks to have at least made an effort that could later inspire serious efforts, and then goes on to prove that the massive effort will not be as beneficial as advertised. She further backs this by Starbucks’ lack of interest in exploring biodegradable options which do not damage the environment as much. Hence, the only reasonable explanation the reader is left to contend with is the fact that Starbucks move was more of a greenwashing attempt. In such cases, the amount of resources and time spent in marketing and advertising the “green” nature of the corporation outweigh their actual business practices that are implemented to reduce the ecological impact of their operations. Davis terms this practice as utilizing environmentalism as a tactic to lure more customers and improve their brand image, based on their lack of interest in investing in other environmental-friendly options.

The rhetoric and the style would resonate well with the younger target audience that the author is trying to address, and helps her successfully achieve the aim of the writing the article. Davis writes, “It appears that environmentalism is something companies are utilizing as a fad in efforts to bring in more customers with new, seemingly helpful tactics” CITATION Dav19 \l 1033 (Davis, 2019). As younger audiences are made aware that corporations are using the pretext of recyclability, sustainability, and green operations to expand their profits, they will be better equipped to understand the deceiving tactics used by these companies and could make the right choices. Since many advertisers portray their products as green to ease the consumption guilt of their customers, it is important for the community to see through these tactics and test a corporation's claims and advertising against evidence before buying into the advertising messages. The style used by the author that mixes rhetorical questions, emotional appeals and logical evidence helps engross the target reader and successfully manages to get the message across.

In conclusion, Davis' literary style alongside her arguments and reasoning help her substantiate her claims regarding Starbucks. The readers are made aware of Starbucks attempt to utilize environmentalism to enhance its brand image and expand its consumers-base. My work progressed over the course of English Writing throughout the semester. I developed sufficient writing skills that allowed me to reach an advanced level. I managed to prepare essays through various rhetorical modes that included description, argumentation and exposition. Out-of-class writing experience has also assisted me in becoming a good writer. I witnessed that my writing improved throughout the course. The opportunities allowed me to overcome my weaknesses and inadequacies in writing.

I adopted the revision strategy for improving the two essays selected for the course. During the course, I got the opportunity to write about Japanese culture, my first essay. Through appropriate rhetoric technique, I managed to write about my encounter with Marie Kondo’s innovative approach to better living. I incorporated different rhetoric tools such as a shift in tones allowed me to establish an argument about universal lifestyle advises and how they are marketed as an inspirational and soulful Japanese way of doing things. to make the essay interesting I manipulated themes for grabbing the attention of the audience.

I used my enhanced writing skills for narrating another important thing about my Japanese culture such as building adequate knowledge about their ways of living and different aspects of life. I uncovered their interest in building a modern life in which spiritual progress is integrated with technological achievements, emotion and intuition are integrated with rationality, and a deeper sense of community is integrated with individualism. By adopting this new style of writing I managed to add humour that makes the essay more appealing to them. In revising the essay I had used personification for sharing my thoughts in a vivid manner. This allowed me to remove the ambiguities that were apparent in my previous essays. I included more details that provide a clear illustration to the readers. I used imagery by mentioning the role of Buddhist sect of ‘Zen', promoted as a way to refresh the West’s spiritual connection with Christianity, by bringing a contemplative dimension to it. The purpose of including this point was to add more clarity for the readers. Another change made in the essay was to remove lengthy sentences because they have a negative impact on the readers and causes distractions.

In revising the essays I incorporated imagery for providing a realistic experience to the readers. This is an effective rhetoric tool used for improving the understanding of the reader. I managed to use this specific rhetoric device for making the essay more appealing. Another important aspect of my writing is parallel construction. It allowed me to use the grammatical form in appropriate manner prevented me from unnecessary repetitions. In revising the essays I managed to remove the things that seemed to be repetitive. Creating a parallel construction allowed me to follow the same grammatical pattern. This is essential for enhancing the beauty of the writing and eliminating variations in the grammatical format.

How do we acquire these temperaments and attitudes? A simple yet compelling explanation was proposed by English Philosopher John Locke; human being, at the time of birth, is having an empty mind, which he termed as Tabula Rasa (blank slate)—this is all he has. With the passing time, this tabula rasa undergoes series of experiences with his environment and interpersonal interactions, which ultimately lead him to develop a dynamic and dominant personality.

In simple words, human being is the product of his genetics and society. In this paper, we would centralize our focus to society because society, as evident from the Locke’s ideas; is an excellent and powerful determinant of human personality—the set of cognitive and behavioral attributes. Now, proceeding towards the definition of “life” this point does not require further elaboration that life is unpredictably dynamic and ever-changing entity depending wholly upon the nature of experiences that we acquire from our belongings and other individuals of the society. This paper is concerned with the documentation of significance that “life experiences” pose to our personality and behavior—based on the interview from selected subject; one of my close relatives, Patricia. Although everyone undergoes some sort of experiences that assimilate, accommodate and mould our predefined cognitive schemas yet some experiences are exceptionally “super-colossal” in nature that make us entirely different person. The subject I interviewed was 20 years old female, who was doing quite well in her academics with an ambition to become a healthcare professional. She was an extrovert, always accompanying her friends and peers; her life was quite unimaginable without her friends and school fellows. She never resisted joining new people; social clubs and parties even if she did not feel physically well. She was a social creature in a true sense. In addition, she was an excellent eater and never bothered to take exercise to keep herself physically fit and never attended her body image factor deliberately as most of the females are typically concerned.

Soon she got shifted to another area, changed her school and again it was an exciting period for her as she scrounged for new people to make a social circle at relatively newer place. This was the period exactly when her life started taking an unusual pirouette. Experience that she got from her peer group and friends was contrary to her expectations. She started getting hateful commenting from her school fellows over her physical appearance including deformed body, unattractive looks and hilarious walking style. She was bullied when she get to café for eating something. Bullying was not only confined verbal expression but she was nearly banished from her peer group. These things kept on happening whole year in various forms.

These actions fell on her fragile mind like a thunder clap, as a result, her self confidence, self concept, self efficacy and even motivation for attending school and confronting people was shattered gravely. She started holding herself aloof, keeping herself refrained from social interactions and meeting even her close acquaintance. Her academic, social and mental functioning was deteriorated badly and she was diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder and a severe eating disorder called Bulimia Nervosa. The extrovert, open and fun loving girl was then overwhelmed by the fear of being evaluated, scrutinized and judged over even the way she takes breath. She was preoccupied with the feelings of inferiority, inadequacy, humiliation, and embarrassment.

Bulimia Nervosa is a psychological condition in which individual becomes excessively concerned with the body image but has uncontrolled eating habit. He usually eats larger amounts of food but after eating try to get rid of excessive calories by self-induced vomiting and laxatives. This condition is potentially damaging and life threatening because body becomes weak for not getting sufficient energy. Currently, she is unable to attend her school, and got failed in the previous academic year. She is undergoing psychological and psychopharmacological treatment—that is all she has now.

Her example makes the idea clear that social factors are potent enough to determine our personality and induce unwanted alterations aversively. Bullying is a serious issue affecting the mental health of many, leaving them alone, battling against their irrational preoccupations. Realizing the significance of social forces, we must use our words and actions wisely because it is not only the matter of words but other’s life.

Yes I wanted to be a doctor because I do not want others to suffer from pain and lingering sense of uncertainty. I attended school regularly because my friends and peers were all I had and I loved being with them; I partied; I laughed and never left any get-together even if I was unwell. I was happy; UMM… My life was happy, I was a happy eater!

When did you realize that school has become problematic for you?

Since my life was centered on my academics and socialization; I bothered not to consider my body getting fatter and that I am turning to be what others won’t accept. We had to change our residence; I left my school with a heavy heart but I was excited because new opportunities were in front of me, meeting new people has always been my favorite thing. But contrary to my expectations, I get the worst experience of my life there.

Oh that’s really bad. What happened to you? And how it impacted you?

It was the first day of school, in new class with new classmates. I introduced myself; they laughed. I said nothing; they laughed. I entered café and grabbed something to eat; they laughed. Soon their laughter turned to verbal abuse; they started commenting my physique and dressing. Whenever they saw me eating, they named me “churning cow” my life was so hard, I hated going to school.

That’s seriously commendable. How it impacted you? Certainly it is quite hard attending school with such circumstances, that’s really commendable.

I felt reluctant going school. My teachers complained, I told them everything but all in vain. They started threatening me. My self confidence was shattered. I felt anxious when leaving my home and when facing others’ glance. I started eating uncontrollably but I had to lose weight so I went for self induced vomiting after eating enough. I repeated this and now I lost control over it. Later my therapist renamed these conditions as social anxiety disorder and bulimia nervosa. This is what my peer did to me! I am a complete failure now.

The story of “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”, in its essence is a story of exploitation of the weak for the happiness of the powerful. Where the suffering of a child has no value in front of the happiness of the citizens of Omelas (Le Guin). Their happiness makes them selfish and delusional regarding the implications of their actions. This society is filled with shimmering seas and exuberant festivals in the summer and overall thought to be a perfect society. However, the truth is that none of it is of any worth when it is all predicated on the basis of the suffering of a child.

The suffering of the child within this short story can also be considered as a political allegory. The beautiful and flourishing city made on the foundation of the misery of a child can be related to the progress of wealthier nations which is based on the suffering and exploitation of less wealthy countries (Le Guin). For the wealthier nations to stay happy and prosperous, they need the suffering and exploitation of the less wealthy nations. This exploitation can be in many forms either of their resources, their labor or their technology. All of this is transferred from the less wealthy nations to wealthier nations.

Furthermore, as the reader goes further into reading the story, there is an emergence of ethical confusion. This ethical confusion stays the same while reading the story and while the reader attempts to correlate the story with what’s currently happening in the world (Le Guin). Most of the writers have considered this story as a form of an allegory of the capitalist nature of the wealthier nations. How these nations have progressed so much in their time on the back of nations that were not even given a chance to understand how they are being used in the façade of being assisted by these wealthier nations.

Furthermore, there is increased use of symbolism within this short story. Symbolism refers to the use of a person, action, object and a place in such a way that other than its literal meaning, it suggests a plethora of different meanings (Le Guin). The fact about symbolism is that the interpretation of the person, action, object, and a place is dependent on the reader itself. This means that every person has a way of relating things they read with what is happening around in the world. So in essence, their understanding of the lesson of the story would also be different.

In the case of this short story, at first glance, the festival in the sun is not such a big thing. Moreover, most readers would overlook it and its importance to the whole story. Most readers would consider it as an overall representation of how happy the whole town is and the overall level of happiness within this town (Le Guin). Furthermore, most readers would consider it as the vibe of the town and how happy and vivacious the town is. On the other hand, that same festival symbolizes something else if a closer look is taken. It symbolizes the security and prosperity wealthier nations have because of the exploitation of poorer nations. The child in the basement are the less wealthy nations on whose back the wealthier countries have access to this increased security and prosperity. These less developed and less wealthy nations are the foundations for the prosperity and security that the wealthier nations have witnessed for decades

The second form of symbolism used in this short story is the people's eyes or more precisely, how they view and judge each other. In the story, the people in the Omelas are not supposed to judge each other. Furthermore, they cannot have any involvement in anything in their lives that could be considered morally wrong. On the hand, someone's eyes are always watching every reaction occurring within the town. Furthermore, each individual in the town is constantly judging every other person and keeping a keen eye on how people are living their lives. These actions of the town’s people are the representation of the judgmental side of the wealthier nations (Le Guin). In the perfect society, they emphasize that they are accepting of every race, color and religion but when it comes to it, they cannot even accept people born of their land with features different from their own. Furthermore, they judge how the less wealthy nations are operating their economies, livelihoods, and cultures when in truth, most of the problems that have been caused in their lives are due to the uncalled intervention of wealthier nations. They have always tried to promote that acceptance is an integral part of their society but in truth, it is seen nowhere in their economic, political and social aspects of their lives. This shows that even in the perfect society they might have created for themselves, there is still the aspect of judging others that they have not worked on.

Furthermore, the suffering child in the basement, the most important aspect of the book is another important form of symbolism that connects this story with how the wealthier nations exploit the less wealthy nations. The city’s beauty, the level of tenderness they feel for their friends, the children’s health, the height of wisdom their scholars have achieved, the innovation in their skills, the increased profits that they are blessed with and the good weather they witness, all of it is based on the misery of a child (Le Guin). Even while reading the above statement one understands that this story symbolizes the state of the wealthier nations in comparison to the exploitation of less wealthy nations and what they have to deal with every day. The child represents the level of injustice and inhumanity that is predominant in the relationship between wealthier nations and less wealthy nations. How one is prospering to new heights of success, while on the other hand, the other is going into the deepest depths of poverty and lawlessness. People in wealthier countries can live with the fact that the people in less wealthy countries are suffering, unlucky to have their peace and security as they are not directly affected by their suffering. People in wealthier countries are content with living in peace and harmony even if they know that people around them are suffering.

Conclusion

Taking all the above-mentioned details into consideration, it could be said that weak ones have always been oppressed by those who are in power. It is heartbreaking to see people in the world are taking advantage of other's suffering as they are concerned with their benefits only. As the oppressed child becomes the source of happiness of the Omelas’s people, likewise, countries that are lagging in economic growth are squeezed by the leading powers of the world. So as a whole, it could be promulgated that morality is being overlooked by the elites as they are just concerned with their materialistic growth for which they are plundering natural and human resources of the weak ones without any regret.

Introduction

There have been a lot of debates for the past few years on the drinking age. Different sociological, psychological and medical researchers have shed light on this debate as per justification from their field. Several arguments are made to change drinking age. Some think that drinking age should remain the same while many assert that drinking age should be raised. All these suggestions are proposed with reasoning, taking into account the necessity of logic that can facilitate a productive decision. According to a medical research, it is brought to attention that young adults reach physical maturity when they are 21 years old, while researchers finding the effect of drugs on young adults and teens affirm that physical maturity, especially of brain and nervous system, does not occur until an individual is 25 years old (Rosenthal, et al). In continuation of this research along with an exegetical approach to society and health, it is affirmed that drinking age should be raised because drugs can cast a highly negative effect on the social moral and ethical growth of teenagers.

Discussion

According to the research that was published in Wall Street Journal, it is asserted that from the perspective of neuroscientists, the human brain is not fully developed until the age of 25, taking into account that it can exhibit some negative effect on the mind of the consumer. As a result of drinking, brain develops some abnormalities that are a threat to life. If drinking age is lowered such as 18-20 years or it is kept constant i.e. 18 years, then alcohol would be readily available to the teenagers. As a result of drinking, the teenagers might get engaged in some accidents as proved by research in the United States that showed that a large number of car crash accidents are alcohol-related and mostly occur in teenagers who are 15 to 17 years old (Rosenthal, et al).

In accordance with the research that was conducted by Core Institute, it is observed that almost 73% of the college students drink, although sometimes, still the overall ratio shows that 74 alcoholic beverages are consumed in a single week. Moreover, about 1/3 of the students have missed their classes because of the temptation to drink and 1/5 of the students have failed in the exam because either they are drunk or they are out with a friend to drink (Chalfin, et al). Another research by (Chalfin, et al), highlighted that people who can’t live without alcohol are found to be addicted to alcohol when they were 18 to 24 years old (Rosenthal, et al). Among them, 1/3 of the people assert that despite several efforts, they cannot stop themselves from consuming alcohol. Sociological studies have highlighted that lowering drinking age can empower and give way to a lot of social dilemmas and unethical behaviors such as crime rates. It is proven that a teenager become an addict more quickly as compared to an adult. (Rosenthal, et al). In order to fulfill addiction, a teenager will commit crimes and the only crime in their reach is "robbing, theft, and smuggling on a minor level". These teenagers when grown will obviously grow up into major criminals who will find more peace and ease in using illegal ways to get their desires fulfilled rather than strive to work hard and earn money. Moreover, addicts are afraid of the social conduct that can deprive them of their flexibilities (Chalfin, et al).

There are several evidence found in the research of (Rosenthal, et al), these evidence justify that youngsters and teenagers who consume alcohol are more towards suicidal attempts and they face impaired cognitive functions that will automatically hamper and influence the ability of the child to reach educational capacity. In accordance with collective research conducted in different countries, it is revealed that increasing alcohol drinking age will help to reduce the problems that are related to alcohol consumption or drinking (Rosenthal, et al). This evidence is traced by analyzing the situation and the ratio of teenagers who are addict or adults who cannot live without drinking in New Zealand and Australia with lowered drinking age (Chalfin, et al). It was concluded that lowering of drinking age resulted in an increased ratio of traffic accidents along with other harms in young people. According to the research by (Rosenthal, et al), it is asserted that increasing drinking age has resulted in saving 900 lives every year, because of fewer alcohol-related fatalities in the underage drivers (Rosenthal, et al).

Although all these evidences are sufficient to assert that the drinking age should be increased still there are some arguments that are proposed. Many researchers are of the view that increasing drinking age will make students use unfair means to get alcohol and it is more dangerous (Chalfin, et al). It is observed that this argument lacks logic because increasing drinking age means there would be a check and balance on buying and selling of alcohol and this initiative will let few use unfair means while many can be saved from life-threatening risks. It is also argued that increasing drinking age will make teenagers develop a rebellious attitude which is defied by the notion that increasing drinking age is capable of saving the lives of students not only socially but also mentally by keeping them away from addiction. It is also important to note that raising drinking age will reduce the number of addicts because youngsters are addicted to drugs when they are exposed to it with freedom (Chalfin, et al). Some limitations and restrictions will not only reduce the number of addicts but it will also help to control the rate of accidents that can save the life of a youngster. Although many of the researchers still believe that maturity comes at 18 years and maturity gives the right to decide fair and wrong, however, the point of analysis is, maturity in the age of 18 does not allow an individual to decide life and death, when actions are equally devastating for the people around. It is evident that a criminal group will also attract others with negative mind, roadside accident can injure someone who has nothing to do with the accident and all these facts are threatful for the progress and status of the country in the long run because youth is the future deciders of the country (Chalfin, et al).

Conclusion

Drinking age is one of the most discussed topics, without any solid conclusion. Still, it is asserted that the drinking age should be raised because it can save a lot of youngsters from mental diseases, societal crimes, health issues and accidents that can affect their life. Moreover, raising drinking age can help save future of the country in the long run because addicts in youth do more harm than good to a country. Also, such violent accidents can deprive the United States of the talent that can help it to make up a mark in the world. In a nutshell, lowering drinking age is more like dragging youth and teenagers to the caves of death and destruction because there is no future of a country in which youth is addicted to alcohol. Also, drinking has both long term and short-term disadvantages that can even deprive a teenager of his life. All these assertions and arguments assert that the drinking age should be raised so that not all but many lives can be saved from getting a victim to social crimes and a narrowed approach of life that leads to death.

Childhood stories or Story of a Childhood?

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood and its sequel Story of a Return are two parts of an Iranian girl Marjane Satrapi’s graphic autobiography during the times of the Islamic Revolution. Being a direct descendant of Iran’s last emperor, Satrapi is greatly affected at the tender age of nine when the Shah of Iran is overthrown by the fundamental rebels and totalitarianism is prevalent over the state. The autobiography which is in the form of a graphic novel oozes great charm and is humorous at the same time. The art in the novel is even though minimal in style, but the powerful black and white images still shock the reader and succeed in depicting the warfare, tragedy, and loss in her surroundings. At first glance, the readers are reminded of the precariousness when there are tense political and social situations. The English editions of the graphic novel are based on two sections and characters in Book 1 include, Marjane, her parents, grandmother, paternal uncle and the housemaid with whom Satrapi shares a special bond. In Book 2, Satrapi’s closest friend Julie and her husband Reza are also introduced. The novel follows four years of Satrapi’s life from when she turned six to the impressionable age of fourteen. Background of the novel is the Islamic Revolution in Iran during the late 1970s and strict rules have been imposed across the country, including segregation of girls and boys in schools and orders inflicted upon women to veil their faces at all times. The novel is a unique exploration into Satrapi’s loss of impeccability and innocence, reflecting on her transition from a child to a young adult and stressing on the growth of her resilient spirit.

During the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini replaces the Shah of Iran and there is enforcement of strict laws across Iran. Being an outspoken and clever child, Satrapi shares all her struggles and experiences of living in a conservative environment which was not conducive to the smooth transition of her inner self from a child to a young adult and forced her to take steps that can be labeled as "teenage rebellion." The memoir is a direct attempt at stipulating the factors which helped shaped her identity and the author wants that the readers should change their perspectives towards Iran.

This graphic novel manages to make this account of pain and tragedy somehow more approachable for those readers who are not well-acquainted with warfare and repression. There is a fathomable undertone of rebellion throughout the story and there is a customization to the illustrations that perfectly delineate the author's resentment and unease. Redolent of her life in Tehran, during Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war which was a time abject with oppression, the author provides a narrative of the Iranians give and take between the push and pull of a dictatorial, totalitarian government and the society's rebellious culture. The invasion of Iran by Iraq aggravated the problems of the fearful nation and resulted in divides among the societies. Iran was invaded merely because it had value due to the presence of oil in the region and this caused the uprooting of a lot of homes and hearths. Believers all around the world who have numerous backgrounds of faith experience similar desecrations of their basic and most essential human rights. The concept of religious discrimination is not limited to any particular geographical region, part of a society, or a group of people who have a different outlook in life. Its roots are broad and expanding continuously since forever. Today, this discrimination is rising strongly on the horizon of social injustices than it has ever before.

We all have mourned school shootings, massacre, and butchery in many incidences. Other than the loss of precious lives, religious discrimination in this matter also holds significant attention. Whenever the shooter or attacker has a beard, speaks Arabic and claims to be a Muslim, he is declared as a terrorist.

Of course, it is an inhumane and unforgivable act; that person is a terrorist in all definitions. European and American media and society play strong propaganda against Islam because of this act of a single individual or a group without even knowing that it is this not what Islam teaches like every other religion that is practiced in this world.

But whenever a shooter is white, an atheist, or belongs to any other religion, he is usually declared as a mentally sick person, who has mental issues which pumped him to do what he did. Such individuals are not declared as terrorists which is clear discrimination. When it comes to terrorists or so-called-Muslims, much hatred is spread all over the world against Islam specifically by media and other sources, and it seems like term “terrorism” is only confined to those terrorists who claim to be Muslims. In Burma, almost 700,000 Rohingyans have been enforced to escape to Bangladesh since August 2017. Because of the ethnic campaign of cleansing which has been approved by the security forces of Burma. Their brutal acts and genocide of Muslim minority continue, and there is nothing much about it on European or American media. According to reports, elderly, infirm persons and children were slaughtered and burned alive in their houses (“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo”).

Moreover, earlier in 2018, six United States of America-based Uighur journalists were hosted by the State Department with Radio Free Uighur Service of Asia. Reports according to them direct that authorities of China are possibly hindering, at least, thousands of Muslims, Uighurs, and other minorities in Xinjiang imprisonment camps. Gulchehra Hoja, a journalist, shared: her 23 members of the family have been captive in the area. Furthermore, in February, Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Sudan was demolished by the government after police charged congregants to evacuate it without giving any warning in advance after the Sunday worship services. Such incidences prove that religious discrimination is certainly not limited to any specific geographical region, part of a society, culture or a group of people. In order to advance the basis of freedom of religion, we all require the strength of our voices to work with a united force.

To kill this horrible social injustice, groups of civil society are needed who mostly hear violation reports. First, they are needed to linger their work with courage and spirit on front lines. Religious leaders belonging to every faith and religion are required to address and convey to their supporters that terrorism, violence, brutality are not the answers and righteous ways to promulgate certain belief.

Governments can play an important part in recognizing religious persecution and discrimination; they need to take a strong stance against this injustice and must treat freedom of religion as prior international policy.

Promoting freedom of religion for everyone advances interests of faith groups, individuals and even countries. Where fundamental speech, religious freedom, peaceful assembly, and press exists, notions contest with each other and several opinions are openly deliberated. From this free exchange, greater understanding comes. Freedom of societies essentially demands religious freedom for development.

Edwin Arlington Robinson is recognized as one of the most influential American poets of the twentieth century. His memorable poetic piece of work is mainly established in the form of short poems. In this paper, my primary focus is to show that the poetic contribution of E.A. Robinson mostly emphasized on factors of imaginative pursuit, materialism, and the unavoidability of change in the context of personal failures in life.

It is important to present a brief background of E.A. Robinson to make better inferences about his central themes of poetry. He was born in a small village of Head Tide, Maine on December 22, 1869. Introduction

According to political scientists, social boundaries that define core national values are helpful in recognizing each other’s identity. These social boundaries are based on race, language, and ethnicity. It may also be based on political beliefs like individualism and liberalism and civic attributes. These attributes are necessary for mutual recognition. There are various social processes that help to get mutual national identification or assimilation (Lash, 2018).

Assimilation is a process where foreigners become the part of a national and they intermingle with the local ethnic group. Some of the classical theorists say that it is a phenomenon of cultural subtraction. The race was particularly the main factor that led the immigrants to be part of American culture. It became easier for some racial groups to assimilate with the American culture within no time and some were not able to adopt American Culture. It was easy for the people to belong to the white race to be the part of American culture but it was not easy for Asian and African to assimilate easily with the Native Culture. This intermingling of the white race gave birth to the core values of American Culture (Lash, 2018).

American culture is shaped both by the immigrants and the native people. Assimilation became a reason of changes experienced by the immigrants as well as by the host country. The schools, churches and other major educational institutes have tried to bring up a mutual culture to make the cultural minorities the part of American society and its culture. The intermingling of an immigrant with the American society gave a new concept of American society that became the base of “true American” or a nation with diverse culture. Assimilation truly proved as a process of change for American society (Lash, 2018). Due to the rise in the number of immigrants in America, the American institutes are trying to minimize the Ethnic distance and they are considering the English language as a cohesive force between the native people and the immigrants.

Language is essential for social adjustments. In teaching modern language like English, the cultural and social aspect of the native speakers are always focused. It is the best example of acceptance of the cultural and social existence of society through learning its language. Language become the tools for a child to have friendship, to love and to make memories (Covello, 1939)

English language is the core part of American Culture and learning this language will help to assimilate completely with American culture. Being able to understand English will help to have more insides of American Culture and it is an essential tool for assimilation into the new culture. The main focus of this discussion is based on the question that, how learning the English language is a vehicle for assimilation in American Culture?

The Connection between learning English and Assimilating into American Culture

English is a lingua franca in this globalized world and it is the part of the core values of American Culture. The anthropological studies have shown that language and culture are interdependent and language is always attached to the cultural and social context. Cultural acquisitions also happen with the help of language. Language has been a powerful medium for socializing because the cultural material pass to each other through language and the cultural discourse are also displayed in a specific culture. For immigrant learning, the English language is a source to get closer psychologically and physically with the host culture. Proficiency in the English Language is a mean of integration into American society. It brings with itself the commitment to the great American Value (Hoffman, 1989).

Only 14 percent of us population were foreign-born in 2015 and 12 percent was the second generations of the immigrant staying in the country for long. But now the percentage of immigrant has increased tremendously and the majority of the native believes that it is not necessary to born inside the country to be American (Hoffman, 1989).

The informative function of the English language:

The most important medium of communication in America is English and it is amen by which people will get to know each other. It is understood as an instrument for action. It is understood as a medium of cognitive development.

The social dimension of culture can be better expressed through language. The English language will make the people bridge the cultural gap and to assimilate in American culture. They will be able to communicate and understand the core values of the dominant culture if they get to know their language.

All the historical books, stories and policy designs of the country are in the English language and if an individual has learned English he/she will easily explore the cultural existence of the society. Idioms and slang words are also essential to understand the cultural makeup of society. Without learning English it is not possible to understand the cultural existence of the society. The factual statements related to the background of American culture are also saved in the English language and to get an in-depth understanding of those learning English is a must.

In the perspective of English language learning, the classroom environment is set in a way that it targets the specific American cultural and the overcoming of stereotypes in the culture is being generally toughed. That gives a better understanding of the culture. Immigrants learn the language as a requirement of their educational institutes but it is also delivering them information regarding the cultural makeup of America. They are basically doing cultural learning because the textbooks reveal the music, food, religion, and beliefs of Americans.

English is not just playing a role of communication but it is the main tool to intermingle with the American culture. It helps to identify the norms and values of the society that are being saved in the textbooks or expressed through media. It breaks the barrier among people and helps to develop a more cohesive environment. (“English as a Global Language and the Effects on Culture and Identity,” 2017).

Expressive Function of English language:

Language is the major means of interaction and communication in a diverse environment like that of the United States. Learning the English language is the same as opening the channel to enter in the American culture. Communication is not just speaking but it refers to the manners that come develops with interactions. Learning the English language will help to learn about the code of conducts in American culture. Culture is transferred in a way of text expressed through language. Language is a model of culture (Graddol, Thompson, & Byram, 1993).

To understand the feelings and emotions of the native people learning their language is important. It will help to express ideas, emotions and will help to explore their way of life by communication with them.

The directive function of the English language:

To get orders, request or to have a command over the anything English language is most commonly used inside America. Being a highly developed country, technology has been the part of their culture and the English language is a requirement for undressing the direction of those technological developments. Research and development is an integral part of American society. Being able to understand the lifestyle of American the knowledge and skills regarding modern technologies are must and learning the English language will make it easy to understand the operation of a technology. It thus helps a foreigner to adopt the American lifestyle.

Immigrants Learn the English Language to be American

Immigration has been seen as an issue in America because the country is receiving an influx of hostility from the immigrants. Immigrants are trying to be the part of the economic, social and cultural makeover of the country. For them learning English is not just a step of development for the immigrants. Being the part of a classroom where a teacher is helping to understand the vocabulary and accent of the English language is the first step to adopt the American culture. It is the same as introducing them with the American culture through their language.

The Americans do the favor to have a proficiency in English for legal immigration. Usually, the immigrants have to pass the English language test before coming to America. Because the English language will help them understand and adopt a new life in America. In fact, it will help them to adopt American culture and lifestyle (Guido, 2008)

American consider English as one of the founding principles of America and the language as an important role for upbringing responsible American citizen. This concept of the American increased the immigrant patience of learning the English language. An immigrant from Norway, Russia, Southern European and Finns have shown great interest in English language and English names. They preferred to be the part of American identity by learning its language and by following its naming patterns. Both the naming and learning English will help them to be part of the economic and social sector of society (Guido, 2008).

The American culture in most of the AMERICAN INSTITUTE teaches immigrant English through music, American history, movies, Dramas, books, stories, news, and novels.

The course that teaches English through music, develops speaking and listening skills by examining American music. The language of the poet and the idioms of the song is interpreted. The also explain the current American culture in perspective of the lyric used in the song. The course that teaches English through stories focuses on the improvement of native speech and fluency through stories of American storytellers. The activities of the students including presenting and listening to those stories. They also have to take the inte4rview from native speakers.

English through American History focuses on the building of student’s writing, reading, and grammar by studying the historical and cultural materials of the United States of America. The class focuses on the significant events that happened in the history of the United States that shaped the political and cultural trends of the society (Skinner & Hagood, 2008).

Conclusion

Assimilation is no doubt a process of ethnic change and the foreigners become part of the nation by adopting its cultural values. Foreigner becomes part of American society by having proficiency in the English language. Because language is the median they use to communicate with the native people. The educational institution that teaches the English language to immigrants teaches it by exploring the dramas, movie, poetry, history books, stories, and music. By exploring that aspect the immigrant develops an interest in American music, history, poetry, movies and in short in American culture. So learning English is a tool that accelerates the assimilation of immigrant into American culture.

The English language is used to strengthen the grips in a developing country like American and people want to be the part of that developed society so the prefer learning English as a second language. English is the language of Science and technology. The American lifestyle is driven by both technology and scientific innovation so learning the English Language is equal to adopting an American lifestyle.

Live before you die

Introduction

We often hear wise words from our elders that live before you die but unfortunately most of us perceive the meaning of living the life to be just breathing. We come to this world with no idea of how things will happen for us and we become dependent on the views of other people on life. We never understand the meaning of life and this is why instead of going after our dreams we start following the expectations of society as a herd. The moment we realize the things we really wanted, it becomes too late to go back in time and get what we really needed. This is what the author of “This is water” tried to convey to his readers by giving daily examples from life (Wallace, 2009). The idea is to live life to the fullest and accomplish all the things that make us alive. The aim of this essay is to make the reader understand the significant things that matter to us i.e. passion but are always taken for granted. This essay will throw some light on the contradictions we face with our families in pursuing the passion dreams that can bring a drastic change in our life.

Discussion

Every person has some dreams, some interests and some passion in life that makes him keep going and enjoy the journey he has planned for himself. With this journey, some hurdles also come in the way which stops us and draw us into confusion about our wants and needs. These hurdles are most of the times the challenges we face in the form of societal expectations, family preferences for us, the norms and myths which most of us blindly follow. Many people give up in the way and surrender to the demands asked from them by making them compromise on their dreams and passion. They do that and later ends up regretting in life when they see someone accomplished their dreams and stood against society. Just like that, I too have a passion for building LEGOs in my life. I have a key interest in this activity and I really enjoy performing the work related to LEGOs but my family does not have similar views about this interest. They think that I am wasting my time by not giving enough input to my studies. My family has always kept education on the topmost priority for me but I disagree on this matter with them. They should give me enough choice to decide for myself because for me education is not the only way to success and happiness. Education is important for those who want to do extraordinary work in the Fifield of research and I do not have such interest. My priorities are different as I have many other choices to plan for my success in life.

Life does not come with compulsion; it comes with a lot of choices. Choices are provided to us at all the stages of life and based on those choices we decide our own fate. We can choose to remain happy by not stressing or and we can also choose to ruin our day by overthinking. This is what David Foster also tried to tell us and I agree with him as far as the matter of choices is concerned (Wallace, 2009). Sometimes the reality is right in front of eyes and we choose to deny the truth by keeping our eyes closed. It is not necessary o always think in a certain pattern like others. We can choose to think differently and will discover many hidden truths of life which will facilitate us in our journey to success and happiness. Foster's brief piece of literature about compassion, realization, and choices makes sense to me because I have also seen the pressure to remain in the line and sacrificing real pleasure we receive from our passions and dreams.

There is no exact formula or a roadmap for the journey forward d in our lives as we have to continuously deal in the gains and losses we received from the choices we made. But my view is that, instead of experiencing the gains and losses for something I never wanted in the first place, I should choose to opt for the pain and loss for the things I always wanted. Let's suppose that I opt for the choices that everyone demands from me and abandon my choices. I will feel the pain twice and will be neutral to the gains received from pursuing the choices my family wants me to make. I will have a stable career and will earn money but I will not feel happy in that kind of success. There will always be a part of me which will be dying every moment I wake up in the morning to go to the hectic job I never desired for. I will die before the death comes in and people bury me. This is why it is really important to start actually living before choosing to die in the hands of wrong choices made consciously.

Conclusion

David Foster only provides a glimpse of what the actual life should be for the people who die before they actually lived. He has great life lessons for us but does not provide a solid roadmap to move forward in life. The roadmap to life is within us and only we should be empathic enough to realize the truth on our own. He only helps us on climbing the first step to realizing that what we are living is not life, life should be explored in the things that move and evolves us not just provide us monetary gains and settlement in life.

All the American popular games are also played by immigrants baseball, gridiron. All types of races and immigrants learn to assimilate in American culture.

The class focuses on the significant events that happened in the history of the United States that shaped the political and cultural trends of the society (Skinner & Hagood, 2008).

Foreigner becomes part of American society by having proficiency in the English language. Because language is the median they use to communicate with the native people. The educational institution that teaches the English language to immigrants teaches it by exploring the dramas, movie, poetry, history books, stories, and music. By exploring that aspect the immigrant develops an interest in American music, history, poetry, movies and in short in American culture. So learning English is a tool that accelerates the assimilation of immigrant into American culture.

The English language is used to strengthen the grips in a developing country like American and people want to be the part of that developed society so the prefer learning English as a second language. The functions of the English language are considered and used by the immigrants to express feelings, emotions and to direct and command as well. English is the language of Science and technology. The American lifestyle is driven by both technology and scientific innovation so learning the English Language is equal to adopting an American lifestyle.
