What College Can Mean to the Other America

Introduction

In the Journal “What college can mean to the other America”, Mike Rose shed a light upon the issue that has been prevalent in the American society.

For years, many teenagers, due to lack of access to affordable and quality education, have resorted opting for low paying dead-end jobs.

However, due to the unforgiving capitalist nature of the American economy, those who are already disenfranchised are continuously drifting out of from even those low-paying dead-end jobs.

Policymakers, reformists, and educationists have put their heads together to find a robust plan to tackle this problem.

Every time, a suggestion emanates from such meetings; every citizen must be provided with equal access to affordable and quality education.

Discussion

Education a fundamental right

In many advanced and industrialized nations, it is widely agreed that access to education is a basic human right.

According to Savani, without having access to affordable and quality education, citizens can never participate in the democratic, political, and economic process in true sense (Savani, Rattan & Dweck 2017).

Furthermore, Savani argues that education is something that is beneficial for society collectively (Savani, Rattan & Dweck 2017).

Additionally, with access to education, individuals are incorporated into the society who are enlightened and motivated to take society to unparalleled success.

Education enables people to actively participate in society

With adequate education, people would be presented with numerous opportunities that would help them to understand the real meaning of living in a civilized and democratic society.

Lambert holds the view that by providing means to individuals to access education equally, the people of the society would acquire skills and knowledge to move on to bigger and organized communities (Lambert, Solem & Tani 2015).

Furthermore, Lambert argues that with the recognition of the right of equal access to education, a society having various cultural and social elements would be shaped (Lambert, Solem & Tani 2015). Hence, enabling its members to interact and participate actively (Lambert, Solem & Tani 2015).

Education as a tool to pull people out of poverty

It is incumbent on the Federal government to invest additional resources in the field of education, especially college-level education.

Duke recognizes that following the completion of a college degree, an individual is on their way to land a full-time job (Duke, 2018).

With the government investing more resources into college-level education, individuals would never be indebted to student loans.

Moreover, overall investment in education would mean that there is a little burden on the citizens in terms of finances, says Duke (Duke, 2018).

With up-to-date educational infrastructure, practices, and standards, the education system would produce individuals that would serve the country in different fields by working a substantive salary.

Therefore, having sound education provides individuals to avail bigger and better economic opportunities.

Capitalism exacerbating the issue of equal access to education

According to the capitalistic perspective, every individual has freedom and equality (Hodgson, 2018).

This is true as far as the law is concerned.

However, capitalism has increased significant inequalities related to wealth.

In the US alone, about 1% of the wealthiest people have control over 34% of the wealth (Hodgson, 2018).

Against this background, it becomes quite difficult for an individual to deal with the unforgiving nature of the capitalist economy (Hodgson, 2018).

Conclusion

Taking into consideration the discussion above, it is evident that the majority of the researchers agreed that access to education is a right that should be safeguarded at all costs.

Furthermore, the researchers highlighted that by having the necessary skills and knowledge, a society can benefit collectively.

Lastly, the capitalist nature of the economy has proven to be the biggest impediment in providing equal opportunities to every citizen.

The first time period that I have chosen for this assignment is the “ Islamic Golden Age” that dates from 632 to mid 13th century.

The second period that I have chosen for this assignment is the “ Ancient Greece” that ranges from 800 BC to 5th century AD.

The major authors from the Islamic Golden Age and their contributions to the field of literature are as follows:

Avicenna (980 – 1070) He wrote a book named “Kitab al Shafa” commonly known as “book of Healing” in which he wrote about Greek philosophy and Muslim theology.

Ibn Khaldun(1332-1406) He wrote “Muqidammah” which is the description of how Muslims were dominate by Mongols.

Averros(1126-1198) Ibn Rushd wrote on law and even on medicine. He was a supporter of Aristotalian ideas as he wrote in his book “ The Incoherence of the Incoherence”.

In the ancient Greek time period, the themes of war are quite eminent. The wars that took place laid great impact on the literature. In the Classical era, it was the period of tragedies. Prominent writers of that time period were Sophocles who wrote tragedy such as Oedipus Rex. Moreover Lyric was being produced in poetry as well as Drama. Plays were performed in theaters for public amusement and apart from that particular amusement plays were mainly concerned with morals and ethics. In the pre-Islamic era, the poetry mainly consisted of praise because people thought it would be consisting magical qualities as for them poetry was a source to cast a spell around a sane person. Poetry was more than a talent for them and poets were considered magicians at that time. The strict rules of Islamic writings lead to monorhyme. This lead to formalism in their work. Female Protagonists

Almost half of the world population is a woman. According to several leaders and thinkers, “women hold up half the sky”. Nevertheless, society has always remained oblivious to their innate potential. Even today, this is a patriarchal world, and men dominate in every sphere of life. Though women have been subjected to several kinds of pressures, several authors and activist tried to change this unjust way of life. The Yellow Wallpaper is a case in point. Here, the main female character spends most of her time in a mansion as she is married to a doctor. This story depicts the post-partum scene where this lady suffers from depression. Instead of giving her time and attention, her husband advises here to stay alone in the mansion. This is counter-productive to her sickness as she gets stuck in this quagmire. Some lines, “But John says if I feel so I shall neglect proper self-control; so, I take pains to control myself, —before him, at least, —and that makes me very tired” (Gilman, 2) reveal the state of Gilman who is under societal pressure. It is not wrong that she is imprisoned, but then she liberates herself from this injustice.

Furthermore, the Gustave Flaubert in (Flaubert) is depicting a simple feminine soul. It is about a maid who is an epitome of grace, love, and loyalty. Her love marries someone else, but that does not make here bitter or cruel in any way. Instead, she finds joy in extending her love to children. This lady Felicité is truly a selfless soul. Her character in the story shows the strength and vigor a lady which is not easily acknowledged in society.

Thus, these stories make it obvious that women are not limited in their strength and potential. They are powerful whenever they decide to use it. It is not justified to restrict women on the basis of their gender or sexuality.

How to Find Happiness Within Unhappiness

Introduction

This research paper discusses how to find happiness within unhappiness and will be analyzing different sources including films, song lyrics, and literary works to create a better understanding of the topic.

Three films

There are three film characters, Charlie Chaplin, George Bailey, and Steven Conrad, and the films are Modern Times, It’s a Wonderful Life and Pursuit of Happiness. This paper will start with the discussion of “Modern times” in which the leading role is played by Charlie Chaplin. This movie portrays the situation during the period of industrialization, which was the time when people had no opportunities and lacked economic resources. People who were provided with maximum economic resources and opportunities of earning were not being provided with a safe working environment. There were also several social problems. One example from the movie 'Modern Time' is the social class system. People from the lower class were exposed to an unhealthy working environment with lower wages.

The second movie, ‘It's a wonderful life’, depicts how an individual learns to survive when he has nothing. In this film, James Stewart commits suicide following which, the Guardian Angel was initiated to protect homeless people. During the great depression, people were not able to find a job. Those who had a job, could not survive in the organizations because of poor economic growth. By that time, there were no business opportunities. People had no sources of earning and were not happy with their standards of living. In this movie, the leading role takes an initiative for providing the banking services by compromising his dreams. He decided to facilitate others in finding sources of earnings and transforming their lives by helping them to improve their living standards. Hence, this shows how an individual makes an impact on others positively, and how few people make others and themselves happy in unhappy situations.

The Pursuit of Happiness also depicts the period of the Great Depression. During this time, people had to suffer from an economic crisis, hunger and unemployment. Only a few people were able to fulfill their needs and get resources that would make them happy. People who did not have enough resources, struggled to find sources and make themselves happy by fulfilling their desires. This film depicts that people may live a happy life even when the situation maybe not supportive.

Man’s Abilities

Over time, human beings learned to cope with the situations either by making compromises or acquiring resources. A man may be facing hardship, he may lose a dear one or may struggle for food, and shelter at times. In these three movies, there is a lesson for all people who were not able to deal with difficult times, were not able to find peace in difficult times, and transform their unhappy moments into happiness. To deal with unhappiness, a man initially tries to search for those resources through which he may find happiness. For example, Charlie Chaplin was not able to find a job, therefore he preferred to stay in jail because jail provided him food. The three characters went through hardships in their life and emotional instabilities, but they tried to cope with the situations and enjoy their life. One character lost his father at an early age, was left alone and had to go through poverty, but later on, he tried to transform his sorrows into happiness. He transformed his sorrows by making compromises and starting a bank. This initiative of the bank provided job opportunities, and generated earning sources for people who were not able to kill their hunger.

What Gets People Through Difficult Times?

The great depression is also known as the "dishonest decade" because many people lost their loved ones due to hunger, poverty, and socio-economic crisis. During the decade of depression, people were at least able to make themselves happy in various ways. Music was one of these ways which made people forget about their sorrows. The great musicians of that time gave people touching music, which had a positive influence, however they were able to think optimistically, while they would get motivation to be happy in the situations of sorrow. People would also dance to transform their unhappy situations into happy situations. When it comes to difficult time and what people get from these difficult times, then it means that a person is umcertain and that person struggles to search for those sources, which may help him/her to be happy. In a difficult time, human behaviors change, their sad voices may be heard, and people who are not happy may not feel comfortable (Gibsone). While there a people may go through psychological issues, and it depends on the situations, however happy people sound with high energy, and they may be healthy psychologically. During difficult times people search for sources to make themselves happy, find peace by listening to music, and they also find dance as a source to find happiness. During the Great Depression, people were not able to get maximum resources for their survival, and to transform their unhappy moments into happy moments. There were some major roles in the literary work who were able to feel the pain of people, they, therefore, tried to make people happy with their happy and motivational songs, poems, and films (Lehman).

Gender Issues: Happiness of Men and Women

During the era of the 1930s, women were able to get jobs and get employed, but their wages were not good enough. Since, most of the women used to work in factories, and they were also expected to work at their homes, all of the activities at their homes were supposed to be done by women. Women, during the 1930s, were not treated as equal to men in both workplaces and their homes. The Great Depression made a huge impact on women, they had to go through psychological changes, and their behaviors were completely changed because of unequal treatment and burden in roles (Gender Roles of the 1930s). In contrast, men enjoyed all of the societal and economic privileges as compared to women. Wages for men were higher and they also did not work double in house chores as women had to.

During the period of the 1940s, women were involved in struggles, such as searching for jobs, work in the factories, unequal treatment at their workplaces, and double gendered roles (Changing Gender Roles - 1940's). In the United States, 25 percent of women made a place in the jobs, however, their jobs were not stable. There was a concept, which emerged during this era that, "women did not work", and women who were working considered themselves as "homemakers" (Chandler). No one was ready to recognize contributions by women in the workforce, there were more biases towards women during the Great Depression. With the time passage, gender roles changed, women became leading roles in their homes, jobs were replaced by women, entered to nursing sector, the ration of food, and other domestic supplies were increased. New Acts were made to ensure the child's safety, and working mothers. The Acts were Lack of child care facilities, and the mother's movement (Changing Gender Roles - 1940's). However, new issues emerged, women were teased by men, sexual harassment cases were reported, and men did not help their wives in their household work.

Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple was a popular personality who was photographed the most, and she also had several admirers. Her admirers included black laborers and people from all over the United States. She contributed to the rights of women in that era, and she was popular as a diplomat at that time. Shirley was a women representative, who spent her life for the development and recognition of women (Friedwald). Shirley was the only girl who influenced a larger population, and she cannot be replaced by any other personality because she tried to have a debate on sensitive topics like women servants who were not recognized in different societies (Kasson). She was able to help several people not only women but also other genders through her work.

Three Films And Man’s Ability To Achieve Happiness

In these three movies (Modern times-1936, it's a wonderful life-1946 and the pursuit of happiness-2006), different roles portrayed different methods including movies and songs through which they transformed their sorrows into happiness. They also helped other people to become happy with their characters and their roles, they played their part as a responsible part of their societies. They created job opportunities for those who were not able to find economic and financial resources. These allowed people living under the poverty line to improve their living standards and fulfill their basic needs.

Conclusion

Man can transform unhappiness into happiness by fighting back with the hardships or giving up. During the Great Depression, people were not able to get jobs, resources to improve their living standards, and improve their quality of life. Several populations lived under poverty and their standards of life were very bad. During this era, some people gave up on their dreams, so that, they may transform unhappy moments of others to happy moments. The films, songs, and literary work by a few people helped people survive and transform their all sorrows to happiness. They helped people by motivating and encouraging them, and they also helped them by creating opportunities for earnings.

Religion has been an important component of human civilization that evolved with time. Greek and Roman polytheism, a religion that believed in many gods and goddesses paving the wayto Medieval monotheism, a religion based on one god who controls the whole system. Different songs were produced and people danced for their gods to make them happy. While in Medieval monotheism, the singing culture can be found in some of the religions like Christianity. They sing along in the church for the purification of their souls. The secular humanistic society, however, maintains its focus on education and works on the literature. The more literature it produces, the better the society should be.

The ancient Greek and Roman worlds added great contributions to religion and philosophy. They had a polytheistic religion, means they worshipped many Gods and goddesses and believed that there were gods behind every natural phenomenon. These gods were assigned to different things like the sun, earth, beauty, fertility, etc. People were obliged to fulfill the orders of their gods and did artistic activities to make them happy. Redefinition of the American Dream

The American dream is a belief that any person can attain success and upward mobility in society regardless of who they are, what their sexuality is and what class they belong to. This dream can be achieved through hard work, tolerance, and sacrifice. However, to achieve the dream there are certain barriers such as gender discrimination and sexual discrimination that as a citizen of America we need to pass through. According to the US constitution, every citizen has the right of free will however despite many laws that are made to protect the Women and LGBTQ community they have to face the discrimination and their voices are suppressed by making certain excuses such as religion and cultural excuses.

The process of discrimination starts at birth. When a child is born parents are required to fill a form that required them to mark the gender of their child. Likewise filling a form for any job or registration in the educational institute the first and the foremost requirement is to provide the information about your gender and in that too there are only two options male and female. There is a concept of gender neutrality. This classification further leads to the roles that each gender had to perform. For instance, females are required to do household work while males are required to be bread wiener (Zeher). In the US society shows flexibility when it comes to acting upon the gender-defined roles as many women are working in the offices and outside their homes while men are taking care of the house. However, gender identity depends upon the perception of a person rather than what he was born as.

 Specifically discussing gender discrimination in the US this issue has been prevailing throughout history. This includes occupational segregation, Unequal household work distribution, difficulty in accessing education and political representation. Additionally, the inequality faced by transgender women and the violence against these individuals is still prevailing in US society. In the past women were used in many rituals in the witchcraft against their will also they were forced to marry or engage in a sexual relationship and were subjected to extreme violence and torture. They were not even given the right to vote. In the year 1792 Mary Wollstonecraft in her published work “Vindication on the rights of women” advocated about equality of the sexes. She demanded that girls should be able to access education on the same footing as boys, also the prejudice against women should be ended and they should be evaluated on their achievements rather than based on their partner’s achievements (Wollstonecraft). The past 200 years does mark improvements and women all over the world do possess some rights and can access education easily as compared to the past yet discrimination is still not fully eliminated. According to the survey conducted by the international center of research on women in 2014 in parliament, only 23% are women while others are males. Also, working women are paid less than men making it difficult for them to access necessities of life such as health care and dietary resources. The field in which women face discrimination differs from country to country such as in India or Pakistan a son is preferred over daughter to an extent that people living in rural areas often kill daughter after their birth. In the US although the preference of son over a daughter is less yet still many people believe that sons are better than daughters.

Moving towards the transgender community the discrimination against them is still prevailing in our society. Although in the US according to the constitution all forms of gender discrimination against the LGBTQ community are considered illegal even in the workplace or during the hiring process discrimination transgender people is illegal (Bartholet). After the Stonewall riots in which the police entered a gay bar and captivate many people the crowd retaliated causing riots (Matzner) and giving birth to several movements and the formation of gay liberation front. However, many years later on April 2012, EEOC determines the gender identity clause in the Title VII policy according to which discrimination against gay people in public places or workplaces is considered illegal (Sape). However, still, gay people are often discriminated publicly. People have different opinions about transgender people and especially same-sex marriage. Although the US constitution permits same-sex-marriage yet there still are many states that do register these marriages and transgender are also not allowed to adopt a child just because of their sexuality. This causes extreme hurdles for them as since their revelation as transgender the face bullying and discrimination in almost every field of life.

However, the world would be far more beautiful if the non-discriminatory, gender and sex-neutral American dream comes true. As when the people will tolerate each other and accept their differences many new opportunities will arise that would benefit the society both socially and economically. There are many examples that proves that if women get the opportunity to show their skills they can also achieve success not only for themselves but for their country such as Serena Williams who holds the title of winning most grand slam, Hilary Clinton who became the first women to be nominated for the president of the US and Peggy Whitson who broke the record of spending most days in the space by any NASA astronaut. Similarly, Lynn Conway is known for his VLSI invention and Jennifer Finney who is a political activist and a renowned author are the people of the LGBTQ community who have made their name in their respective fields. The American dream revolution will not only benefit females but also the LGBTQ community.

Despite being living in the 21st century there still are people who oppose the American dream revolution. Specifically, more people opposed LGBTQ movements by making religion as the basis of opposing. The reforms in gay rights also include the removal of the prohibition of gay marriages causing many religious organizations to perform these marriages which according to them is the violation of their freedom of speech and practice religion. On the other hand, many people are against the feminist movement argue that these movements are against the religious teachings as most religions have identified the role of homemaker to the women due to which women working outside the home is considered against the teachings of religion causing harm to the religious sentiments of many people. However there still are people who are in supporting women rights as well as the gay community rights as according to them empowering women will help them be independent and will make their access easier to the basic necessities of life which will in turn benefit children as an educated mother can be more fruitful in the development of the child. Additionally, many people are in the favor of including topics such as female rights and sexual diversity in the curriculum so that people can learn more about the issues prevailing in our society and helps in reducing them. Furthermore, the advertisement culture should also be changed by showing diversity and programs that empower women rather than making an object of gratification. Also discussing the LGBTQ if they are given their fundamental rights they could progress in their life and this will also end the violence against them (Kattari). When all the people will have equal rights the country will be balanced and people altogether work for their prosperity as well as play a significant role in national prosperity.

Freedom as the Major Response to “Wall of Fire Rising”

“Wall of Fire Rising” by Edwidge Danticat is one of the greatest pieces of literature that has the potential to open a new horizon of the rational form of thinking to the readers. It is worthy of mentioning that all the main characters of this particular story actively connected in the form of some common perspective that ultimately help readers to connect their lives with the incidents mentioned by the author. This specific short story based on the paradigm of Lili, her husband, and their son. The aspirations of all these characters help to determine the central theme of the story. The focus is to critically analyse the entire plot of the story to connect the approach of freedom with the lives of the characters developed by Danticat.

Getting freedom from all the troubles of life is everyone’s dream, and people strive to attain liberty in their lives. The Veldt

1. Wendy and Peter, the children in the Hadley family, convey the themes of cruelty and vengeance. The automated machines are doing everything for the kids that ultimately eliminate the role of parents from their lives. Parents ignoring their duties causes greater destructions to their children.

2. Thesis: Faulty parent-child relationship is the product of parental negligence and inability to perform their duties. Ray Bradbury in “The Veldt” portrays the implications of technology on human relationships. Increased dependence of humans changed their relationship which each other. Technology can never replace the role of parents. Parents must be aware of the power of technology because it may undermine parents control on children. Destruction is visible as Hadley mentions, "when I punished him a month ago by locking the nursery for a few hours, the tantrum he threw" CITATION Bra50 \l 1033 (Bradbury). Technology undermined the sense of belonging, closeness, and love in the children that distanced them from their parents. I have chosen the thesis because the dependence of society has increased on technology in the twenty-first century. The parents are relying too much on the concept of automation that poses long-term threats. The thesis will explain how technological advancements have affected human relationships by promoting isolation and emotional disconnection. The indiscipline of the children exhibits the failure of the parents.

3. Conclusion

In conclusion, I w, ould explain that the destruction of children in the Hadley family was due to parental negligence. Their dependence on technology distanced their children, and they failed to develop feelings of love towards them. Technology has detrimental impacts on human beings.

The power of machines is visible in the story, “how the nursery caught the telepathic emanations of the children’s minds and created life to fill their every desire” (Bradbury 332). The parents remain unaware of technological destructions until things got out of control. Excessive dependence on machines undermined emotional bonding between parents and children.

Literature evolved with the intellect of the human being. It played different roles in different eras. Generally, it is believed that literature either indirectly reflects the society or it attempts to set the morals for a society so the society would follow those morals and would reflect in a certain way. Furthermore, literature attempts to prophesize about how society would reflect in near or far future. American literature is considered one of the richest kinds of the literature of the world albeit it has a short history of a few centuries. Realism refers to the portrayal of the true picture of a society without modifying the facts or adding didacticism into it. 19th-century American literature, being influenced by French literature, is identical in being realist literature. The majority of writers chose to write on the actual issues in society. Realism has not a specified definition and it changes from region to region, but scholars have a consensus that realism in American literature dealt generally with the issues of the middle and poor class. Suspense in a piece of literature is used to keep the reader engaged and mystified about the development and conclusion of a story. An African American author Harriet Jacobs and a White American have written in different genera, but their works share a theme. The Tell-Tale Heart written by Edgar Ellen Poe and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl authored by Harriet Jacobs are full of suspense and both works deal with the idea of Realism. This essay discusses how both authors despite using different genera produced literature on the same theme. Likewise, the essay attempts to explore socio-economic and psychological issues faced by the poor and middle class of the 19th century.

Body

Edgar Ellen Poe and Harriet Jacobs are two prominent literati of the 19th century. They both penned their inner approach to society. Poe spent a miserable life due to ailing health; early death of his beloved wife Virginia, and financial setbacks that he had to bear because he solely depended on writing for all his needs. His misery and uneasiness are apparent in his works like Black Cat (August 1843) and The Tell-Tale Heart (1843) where he appears as a sick-minded cold-blooded killer. The Tell-Tale Heart (1843) is one of the masterpieces of Edgar Ellen Poe and typical of his nature. It is a fiction story that is written in a biographical tone. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) is a non-fiction autobiography of Harriet Jacobs who started her life as a slave girl in the South and ended as a free American in the North. This book symbolizes the miserable life of hundreds of thousands of African American girls who were living as sub-humans in America during the 19th century.

Edgar Ellen Poe is rightfully considered the pioneer of thriller literature in America. His short stories haunt the reader and the reader does not give up on reading until the story ends, thanks to the profusion of suspense in his works. His short story The Tell-Tale Heart is an ideal example of suspense. Poe writes that he was alright and friendly to an old man living in his apartment. He does not know why he disliked only one eye of that old man and killed that man successfully for that one eye. He hides the corpse successfully but later reveals to the policemen the location of the corpse. Thus, he keeps his reader in deep confusion about what will follow. The author boosts the impulse of the reader by extraordinarily demonizing the old man’s eye. He says: “His eye was like the eye of a Vulture” (Allan, Edgar. P.p. 2). He does not even bother to introduce that old man, but he glamorizes the plan of his murder as he were going to assassinate a known state man. He states that he planned the murder for a week: "For seven nights I did this, seven long nights, every night at midnight" (Allan, Edgar. P.p 3). It appears to the reader that a different kind of murder or a miraculous escape will follow as Poe is speaking like a detective about the murder. Eventually, he kills him smoothly and the reader assumes that the denouement has been reached, but the entrance of the policemen increases the suspense again. He convinces them that nothing bad happened, but after they are satisfied, he reveals the place where the dead body of the old man is buried. The reader is stunned with this action of Poe.

Harriet has written quite a long autobiography using actual details with the only chance of the character names, but thanks to his technique of adding suspense to her work the reader does not lose interest. Furthermore, she uses pathos to appeal to keep her reader engaged. Pathos appeal is used to engage the audience by boosting their emotions. She wrote Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) on the insistence of her fellow activists when she formally joined the famous Abolitionist movement against slavery in America. This book reveals her life journey from a slave to a free American. The selected chapters for this essay are The Flight and Free at Last which describe how she escaped her master’s work field and finally won freedom. She does not predict anything rather she uses shifts in dialect and her conjectural thoughts that make her reader doubtful whether she would be able to escape or not. For example, in The Flight, she reveals her intention about running off but apprehends that the consequences will be terrible for her family and herself if she cannot succeed. She writes: “..and if I failed, O what would become of my poor children? They would be made to suffer for my fault” (Jacobs, Harriet. P.p 146). The reader feels that she might compromise her peace for the sake of her children as she appears compassionate towards them, but she escapes the house of Dr. Flint: "I feared that the sight of my children would be too much for my full heart, but I could not go into the uncertain future without one last look" (Jacobs, Harriet. P.p148). Similarly, in the final chapter Free at Last she makes the reader skeptical about her fate when she introduces Daniel Dodge, son in law of Dr. Flint, who came to find her using his full potential. She does not feel satisfied with her future until Mrs. Bruce embraces her and says that she has paid for her, but not bought her. Mrs. Bruce says: "O Linda, I'm so glad it's all over! You wrote to me as if you thought you were going to be transferred from one owner to another. But I did not buy you for your services. I should have done just the same if you had been going to sail for California to-morrow" (Jacobs, Harriet. P.p 150). She uses pathos appeal throughout the text to keep her reader engaged and apprehensive about her future.

Edgar Ellen Poe is among the leading American writers who renounced idealism in their writing and portrayed society as they perceived it. Being a realist piece of literature The Tell-Tale Heart (1843) is identical in portraying confused nature of contemporary Americans. Realist literature refers to portraying society as it appears, especially the lives of common (poor and middle-class) citizens. Common citizens were facing challenging economic circumstances under a rigid Capitalist social structure after Industrial Revolution (Braxton, Joanne. N.p). It caused silence anxiety among the masses who were too busy with their business that they lost intimate feelings for their brethren and mates. Additionally, they were preached by the Church to have an ethical character. Religion was at one side and (Capitalist) society at the other. A state of confusion rather mental chaos was penetrating the psyche of common citizens that they did not know what to do and why. The protagonist of Poe’s story attempts to clarify that he is not mad, but ironically gives the evidence that shows him mentally sick: “I heard Sounds from heaven; and I heard sounds from hell” (Allan, Edgar.p.p 1). A normal person can never make such claims (Rajan, Gita. N.p). He kills a fragile old man with whom he has a good relationship, but he does not know even the reason for his action: "It is impossible to say how the idea first entered my head" (Allan, Edgar.1). A grown-up man appears insane if he talks in such away. He plans the murder of his home mate and kills him brutally for a petty reason: the old man's ugly eye. Nevertheless, the confusion does not stop here, his conscience stands tall after he successfully kills the man and conceals his dead-body. He feels the heartbeat of the old man: “Still his heart was beating; Louder, louder, louder!” (Allan, Edgar. 3). It shows that despite being a cold-blooded murder, the protagonist was still under the influence of religious or moral education that activates our conscience.

Harriet Jacobs also does not mind portraying the actual picture of her society. She is outspoken in telling the brutalities of the Whites against African Americans. She uses her character as a synecdoche to describe the sufferings of all Black slave girls. She reveals how her old master Dr. Flint attempted to have sex with her when she was a teen girl. It was a norm that the White landowners used to use their slave girls for sex as well. Dr. Flint is even supported by his son to persuade Linda (Jacobs) for this practice that she denies categorically and receives physical punishment. She explains how difficult it was for a Black girl to escape slavery in such a great country like America during the 19th century. The Whites had full authority and constitutional endorsement to punish their slaves as they liked. For instance, when Linda escaped Dr. Flint’s house, he announced: “If I find out that any of my niggers have had anything to do with this damned business, I’ll give ‘em five hundred lashes” (Jacobs, Harriet. 148)The life for negroes was so difficult that neither religion nor governing institutions were able to even condemn this inhumane practice until the Abolitionists rose for their rights and put an end to slavery in America. Nevertheless, Jacobs notes that the dark and painful memories of slavery would be inerasable from the scriptures of history: "The bill of sale is on record, and future generations will learn from it that women were articles of traffic in New York, late in the nineteenth century of the Christian religion" (Jacobs, Harriet. P.p 302).

Conclusion

19th century American literature is full of suspense and the writers focused upon writing on realism ideals. For instance, they wrote about the actual issues of society and portrayed society as it was in that era. A fiction story The Tell-Tale Heart (1843) written by Edgar Ellen Poe and a non-fiction autobiography Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) written by Harriet Jacobs share the theme of realism and they both are full of suspense that makes them typical 19th-century shreds of literature. Poe highlights the state of confusion among common American whereas Jacobs presents the hardships that African American slave girls faced before they won Civil Rights in America. Macbeth is written by Shakespeare and is a tragedy play. According to Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero, he owns a high social standing or honor because of his bravery and moral strength of character. Likewise, this tragic hero also contains a weakness or tragic flaw which results in his downfall and he becomes morally corrupt. Macbeth is a tragic hero and he is shown as a brave and veteran war soldier. Besides, King Duncan and the public of Scotland speak highly of him however, his downfall starts because of his overreaching ambition. Moreover, the three witches and Lady Macbeth also make him a tyrant through their prophecies and manipulation, respectively.

Lady Macbeth’s ambitious and cunning nature persuades Macbeth to kill King Duncan and become the king of Scotland. She corrupts Macbeth’s mind with the thoughts of jealousy and revenge. Moreover, she ignites his doubts which motivates him for the murder. Besides, she maligns his passive feeling that it was because of his bravery that Scotland won the war. Additionally, she questions his manhood and ambition. This emotional blackmailing and persuasiveness leads him to take the dagger for the final act. She does not stop her malign scheme there and plots his actions for the future too and forces him to repress any sign of rebellion against him. She hires private murderers and gets Lady Macduff and her son killed as well. Unlike Macbeth, she does not doubt her heinous actions and when Macbeth takes over the throne, she controls the context of his first speech as well. However, she cannot resist fate and slowly drives herself into madness and sleepwalking which leads to her suicide. Lady Macbeth plays an exemplary role in changing the conscience of her husband and she compels Macbeth to attain kingship to gain authoritative control and power.

The three witches are employed by Shakespeare in the play to reveal the depravity and greed present in human nature. When they first meet Macbeth and Banquo, they prophesize for Macbeth and Banquo both but these predictions affect Macbeth and the chain of events that follow afterward. On the other hand, Banquo chooses to ignore these predictions because his heart is free of weak emotions. Besides, when their first prophecy comes true and Macbeth becomes the Prince of Cawdor, he starts trusting these prophecies blindly and brushes aside his doubts. He disrupts the natural order by assassinating King Duncan and Banquo's son Fleance so that the other two prophecies can be fulfilled. Moreover, he goes back to the sisters once again when he fears a chance of rebellion from Macduff and they tell him that only such a man who is born of no woman will defeat him. Besides, his kingdom will be overthrown when Birnam woods will start to move. Macbeth forgets that these prophecies are twofold and the natural order will manifest itself because King is a deity and his murder is a revolt against the natural order. These prophecies start unfolding themselves and Macbeth’s downfall occurs as a result.

Lady Macbeth's ambitious and cunning nature lures Macbeth into murdering Duncan and then he never stops and indulges in mass murder. Besides, the prophecies given by the three witches take hold of his weak moral character and he decides his future actions based on these predictions. However, his doubts and jealousy cannot be overlooked as key factors that make him appear as a tragic hero at the end of the play. I love watching drama enactments and fiction adaptations because the dialogues, artifacts and stage directions make the action close to reality. Macbeth is a classic play because it carries a universal appeal and discusses the tragedy of a man who was lured into murder and sin. These weak attributes are prevalent in the real world too.

All Quiet on the Western Front

“All Quiet on the Western Front” is a novel narrated by the German Veteran of World War I, Erich Maria Remarque. The author is marked with the creation of many works recording the horrors of war. The novel is centered on the mental and physical sufferings of the veterans during the war narrated by Paul, a 19 years old soldier. Paul along with his friend experiences the reality of war which changes their views about it. Paul and his friends participate in the war with valor and pride, but only a few were able to survive it. War changed the values and views of most of the soldiers, and its unforgettable effects followed them throughout the rest of their lives.

Paul, Tjaden, Müller, Albert, and a few other young people were highly impressed by the speeches of their teachers about the glory of war. The patriotic speeches of their teacher Kantorek inspire every one form the class to be enlisted for the military services just after World War I began (Remarque, 23). Over their first meal, they are criticizing teachers who stimulated them to take part in war by the romantic ideas about war. The realities of war are exposed to them as they visit one of their friend, Kemmerich, who is dying in the hospital. The condition of their friend leaves them no more optimistic about the war. The hospital also exudes a vibe of little empathy for their wounded friend. They have realized that war is not a glorious or honorable thing. The whole ideas of beauty, patriotism, honor, duty, and adventure vanish.

The true reality of war is revealed on them just after the ten weeks of brutal training at the hand of the Corporal Himmelstoss who is very harsh and crucial. The reality of war is exposed by the narrator by the depiction of the Himmelstoss and his unimaginative brutality (Remarque, 25). They only got enough food for lunch when cook prepared food for 150 people but only eighty men return from the front and rest of all were killed. Paul's friend Muller attitude towards their dying friend also makes Paul learned that war disconnects people from the emotions of fear, sympathy, and grief.

As the group of fresh recruits comes to underpin the company, Paul and his friends learn that how incapable become arrogant and influential during the war. This is the reality of war and the people in power during the war who contribute to promoting it. Another occasion shares the brutality of war, when men went on a task to lay the wire at night are bombarded heavily when they were back on their way. Fire, darkness, and gas approached them, and they hid in the coffins of the corpses in the graveyard. The dead bodies are mixed with the living people, and this is the true face of wars at the front. Most of the people were unable to survive, but Paul and his friends survived.

Those who survived, when came back to the back they sit together and talk about what they would do after the war ends. At this point, they feel that war will never end. They are unfamiliar with the fact that if the war ends what would they do and all were unable to come up with anything. They were “lost” according to Paul. When Paul goes back home on leave, the ignorant people of town annoy him. He feels distant and lost, and this is the impact of war on him. He knows that his life will never get free of the impacts of war. When he is poisoned in the gas attack, all he knows is war.

First of all, it is highly necessary to determine various characteristics that were possessed by Odysseus. According to the Greek culture, a hero should be of a divine birth. Same was the case with Odysseus as he was given an arduous task for which he sacrificed his time for his family. The dangerous arduous task made him stay in the wild for more than ten years. On the basis of his intelligence, bravery, and physical strength, he managed to win his quest regardless of tough circumstances (Seidensticker). His divine birth and superhuman abilities allowed him to face a challenging environment. His quest at sea was one of the toughest quests of his life where he had to face many villains. According to Greek mythologies, Odysseus had bad blood with Poseidon who made many troubles for him during his quests. Every time Odysseus planned to sail, Poseidon made troubles for his ship. It is noteworthy to mention that a normal human being cannot defend himself from foul creatures on this earth. However, Odysseus possessed superhuman characteristics that helped him to combat these giant creatures.

During his quest at sea, Odysseus faced the Cyclops, the dead, the Sirens, and Charybdis. These creatures made his quest very difficult, but Odysseus managed to complete his quest regardless of these circumstances. However, Odysseus does possess some flaws such as excessive pride which proved to be problematic for him along the way on the sea (Robinson). Regardless of this, Odysseus always received assistance from supernatural powers. Supernatural help that he received from the gods helped him along his journey. Odysseus can be categorized as a hero because he possessed a great form of thinking approach. He distinguished his position as a proactive thinker who had the ability to successfully and timely react to tough situations in life. It is one of the most prominent features of his character that he successfully apprehended his ability to think proactively and find solutions in any situation (Fitch III). His complex nature as a Greek hero eventually made him strong enough to successfully react to any unexpected situation and utilized his personality domain of intelligence. Another prominent feature of his personality was established by the author is that he was a man of faith who was always interested to follow codes of honor (Hopman).

To conclude the above discussion, Odysseus was indeed an epic hero with superhuman characteristics. Odysseus is recognized as one of the most frequently acclaimed characters in English literature and is portrayed as a strong character for the audience. It is interesting to critically assess all the factors or attributes of Odysseus that helped the audience to recognize him as the hero although he never killed any of his enemies. The American dream is different from African American as compared to other groups of people. A new American dream for the black community in this era is to get complete freedom according to the new definition of freedom. Next aspect of the American dream is to get an equal opportunity as that of white people. Even if a black person gets his freedom, and had never been wrongly accused he still struggles to get a decent job. Unequal opportunities were not only subjected to the job market for African American. African Americans had to struggle for equal opportunities in education, healthcare, employment and justice system.

Now the American dream from the perspective of Mexican Americans will be discussed and, how it is related to white and African Americans. Mexicans cared more for the American dream as compared to any other community in the United States. This is because Mexican Americans have seen America in its golden era of economic boost and been working hard to achieve the American dream along with the whites. For them, America was a golden land of opportunities and therefore in current time, Mexican American believe in the American dream more than white people. If the history of Mexican American is seen, it will clear that hard work pays off and the coming generation of Mexican is more successful. According to various surveys, it is observed that Mexican American Americans have a better life as compare to their parents and they want an even better life for their kids. For Mexican American, American dream is almost the same as that of white which is career success, financial security, hard work and surety that each new generation better than one before them. Having a better life than before generations, this statement is enough to justify that Mexican Americans has achieved their American dream.

Asian Immigrant Perspective on the American Dream

Next group of people who comes to America to achieve their American dream are the Asian immigrants. For Asians, the American dream is a desire to escape from political, social, and economic hardship in their homeland. Moreover, the American dream for Asian is to achieve success and prosperity. Some saw American as a place to earn money and support their families back home but some see America as a place to secure a new identity and lifestyle. Eventually Asian American has settled there and next-generation becomes Asian Americans. In 1870s Chinese immigrates substitute conventional labor in railroad construction, factories, fishing, farming, and mining. The term immigrants are taking our jobs has started in the 1870s, this because of cheap labor that Chinese community offers. Although an American dream has been different for a different group of people, it has been disillusionment for some community in the beginning. Evidence and reasons of this disillusionment are given in the previous paragraph, where different perspective of the American dream is discussed in detail. Overall the American dream has been a reality for different groups and even for women. In the early 18 century, the American dream has been disillusionment for African Americans and women. But with time both women and African Americans got equal rights. In the 18th century, the American dream for women was to give birth and raise a family. With the rise of the feminist movement, women in American got a way dream big and participated in developing the economy of the United States. Slavery was the biggest issue for African Americans, but after the civil war absolute freedom, equal rights, equal opportunities, equal justice system has become the biggest issues of the African American community. The beauty of the American dream is that it has changed over the course of the period. The change has been different for each community and eventually, each community has achieved its version of the American dream.

Literary Analysis: Frankenstein

I have chosen to write my literary analysis on Marry Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. It was published in 1818 and falls under the genre of gothic fiction as it combines the aspects of horror and mystery. The novel has been adopted by various TV shows, movies and more. The historical and cultural article I've chosen gives me insight into why Mary Shelley had chosen to write Frankenstein, and that is because Shelley got the idea of writing this story in her dream one night. Moreover, her trauma also served as a motivation for telling this ghost story. "She was also energized by a series of personal traumas that fueled her feverish story". In this essay, I will be analyzing the characters, organization, structure, and diction all in the novel Frankenstein.

In the first paragraph, we are going to literary analyze and discuss two characters in Frankenstein. Let’s start with the protagonist Victor Frankenstein. Frankenstein, while studying in Ingolstadt discovers the secrets of life and creates a monster which is the antagonist. Victor is so immensely disgusted with what he has created and decides to keep his creation a secret. He names his new creation Frankenstein, and due to Victor’s ignorance, Frankenstein turns into a monster. “Victor Frankenstein is both Prometheus pyrophoric, the Titan who stole fire from the gods and delivered it to humans, and Prometheus passivator, “said to have created or recreated mankind,” often with the same fire, “by animating a figure made of clay” (McQueen 123). Now onto discussing the antagonist, none other than “The Monster”. The imagery the author gives us on the monster does not give us a pretty sight. The monster is very tall and ugly looking that Victor gets disgusted by his presence. However, the readers can analyze the monster's sensitivity and intelligence and start to feel for him. The monster tried his best to connect with humanity constantly getting shut down “I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous” (Shelley 50). The monster does not take the situation well and swears revenge against his creator murdering people on the way, “If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear!” (Shelley 50).

Next, I am going to analyze the structure and organization of Frankenstein. It has 3 different narrators throughout the novel and this is known as a multi-strand narrative. The three narrators are "Robert Walton", "Victor Frankenstein", and "the monster". This story is mainly told through letters which are also known as "epistolary narration". It is easy yet complicated to recognize these types of narratives in the story. The text includes the date in which the letters were written where the reader can pick up on that, but when this switches between multiple different narrator's things become a bit more difficult to understand. Frankenstein is known for its complex narrative structures. However, writing a story following this structure makes things more suspenseful and interesting. The narratives are interlinked so by the end the reader should have a full understanding of the messages that are given through this story. I believe without the epistolary technique; Frankenstein would not appeal the readers. I enjoyed decoding the complex bits of this story, and I am sure other readers can agree on this.

For my final paragraph, I will analyze the diction, in other words, word choice within Frankenstein. Mary Shelley uses all types of diction throughout the story such as formal diction, informal diction, and colloquial diction. She also used a high level of vocabulary, especially when the monster is telling the story. "Thus, I relieve thee, creator," he said, and placed his hated hands before my eyes, which I flung from me with violence; "thus I take from thee a sight which you abhor. Still though cant listen to me and grant me thy compassion," (Shelley 62) That quote is a great example of "formal diction" for it contains "fancy" words like "thus", "thee", and "thy. Mary Shelley's diction within Frankenstein also heightens fear for the reader, such as using words like “horrid” and “wretch”. Moreover, the diction employed by Shelley also reveals the tyranny of human nature and lust for power. The words such as “creation”, “bestowing” represent man’s overreaching ambition and his desire to become a demigod. Good job Mary Shelley you officially freaked out your reader with your word choices. Not only does diction control “word choice” it also enhances imagery within a story as well, especially here in Frankenstein.

In conclusion, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is an interesting book. The characters in the story are all so fascinating, especially the two main ones I wrote about "Victor Frankenstein" and "The monster". The organization and structure Mary Shelley provided for this book was also a very neat way to tell this horrific story. Then for my final paragraph, Mary Shelley's diction/word choice enhanced the story all around, without her ghoulish words and formal dictions this story would not nearly be as creepy and meaningful.

Chekhov has chosen to depict these two people meeting because it is an effort to make an imaginary personality. It is also an effort to know how his personality would have reacted to these different and somewhat unfavorable situations. There are certain similarities in Gurov and Chekhov which have compelled the writer to depict Gurov as himself. A thing to note here is that Gurov is associated with art and culture. In the early days of his career, Chekhov worked in two distinct roles. He was a traveling doctor as well as a literature writer. By the year 1899, he had almost given up the profession of medicine and was more focused on literature. The character of Gurov was an attempt to see the higher lifestyle that he had left behind. The other reason that these two persons have only met each other is that there is a clear contrast in their personalities. These differences took them away from each other. The lady has to return to her sick husband and has to leave Gurov. Both persons involved in the affair have different reactions to their newly made relationship. Anna showed her emotions by crying in their first meeting while Gurov seems to have been bored with her. Just like the author has not been able to wipe off his memories regarding the medical profession, Gurov has not been able to forget Anna. The plight of the writer is that he had given up the life as a doctor and now he is a writer whereas the two main characters also have similar problems especially Anna who has her husband at home and yet she promises to come and meet Gurov in Moscow.

The character of Gurov has is frustrated by his domestic life. He is also depicted as being against women. The reconciliation of this character with his new love comes out of two things. One fact is that Gurov is unhappy with his current domestic life and wants to have some change. The second aspect is the depiction of the author that shows Gurov as someone who wants to leave the things that he has at present and try and grab those things which seem to be out of his reach. This situation is very similar to the author who left his service as a doctor to take on literature as his primary career. The lady is also distressed due to the health of her husband and she starts to cry once she meets Gurov. All these aspects would have meant that the relationship between these two people would have been different from what Gurov had experienced so far. The author has also shown some characteristics of Gurov other than being misogynistic. He was an unfaithful man and cheated on his wife many times He did not like to remain at home and considered women as the lower race. Despite being disrespectful, Gurov could not spend much time without women. The author states that

“In the society of men, he felt bored and not himself, with them, he was cold and uncommunicative”

Gurov saw Anna while having dinner in the garden where she came and sat next to his table. Out of his experience, he had some impressions related to her such as her being married and visiting this city for the first time. In their first meeting, Gurov stated clearly that he has been bored in this place. Gurov found her way of communication as if she is still young and single as opposed to being married.

The first reason to meet in Yalta was that they both were present in the same town and were trying to find new companionship, one person out of boredom and another person out of the adverse health situation of her husband. The second reason to meet in the town of Yalta is that Gurov had already heard the stories about the ease with which people can get into a relationship at this place. Although he negated most of the stories and thought that the people who have made such stories would have failed in making any relationship with any person. While he was thinking about the stories and comments by various people, Anna came and sat just beside him. There is a notion presented by the author that Moscow people have not been good at maintaining relationships. All the delicate relationships formed with Moscow people tend to get complicated and within a short period become a serious problem. At first, these relationships seem to go very smooth but eventually develop into a problem that has very serious consequences. The primary reason was that the author is a permanent resident of Yalta and he narrated the whole story from his perspective CITATION WGa69 \l 1033 (Jones).

The story tells us that there are certain fallacies that a person keeps in his mind regarding his self. Gurov is the main character in this story and he is not happy with his wife. He thinks that he has the right to have relationships with other women and his wife has no right to ask about them. He predicts to be a daring man but in reality, he is afraid of his wife. Another contradiction is that Gurov calls women the lower race but he also wants to spend time with them. He cannot spend much of his time without having a relationship with a woman. This shows a lack of self-control and self-knowledge in the character of Gurov. There is another instance of lack of self-knowledge when the author speaks badly about the people of Moscow and states that every delicate relationship started in this city turns into a serious problem over time. Despite this statement, Gurov continued to develop relationships with different people in the same city CITATION Val74 \l 1033 (Bill). Gurov had been told many stories about the town of Yalta but he did not accept them because he wanted to make such a relationship himself. He was able to make such a relationship with Anna very easily. This shows a higher level of self-knowledge as well as self-confidence. Another aspect is that Gurov does not see the women as a lower race in general but does not like his wife. His nature is such that he cannot live with a single woman for long. As far as Anna is concerned, she needs to know herself better as she is split between her husband and Gurov. She has not been loyal to her husband who has been ill. She has little knowledge of what she wishes or needs. This is depicted in the fact that Anna promises to meet Gurov when they meet after some time. She had come to Yalta to figure out what she needs. Even after meeting Gurov, both of them came to know that their relationship will not go along for very long because of their differing characteristics CITATION Ant05 \l 1033 (Chekhov and Garnett).

What is the role of culture in connecting or alienating characters from each other?

Introduction

There are various female novelists in English literature but very few could be included in the list of who criticized the set patterns of society. The age of innocence is one of the best novels of the 19th century, which was set in the time of Wharton's childhood and was published in 1905. This novel refers towards the gilded age and it not only focuses on the love triangle but also, it emphasized on the idea of private vs. individual public self.

Discussion

After reading this novel, one of the most obvious things that could be highlighted is the culture difference and clashes between the two ideologies. The age of Innocence is the detailed portrayal of the social conventional culture of 19th-century high society. After critically analyzing this novel it could be said that this novel describes the culture of New York and its prevalent social class at a specific time in American history. According to a scholar, Louis Auchincloss claims that "this novel is written in the Proustian mood of remembering the things that invoke the airless atmosphere of an old and ordered small town of New York".

Various characters have been portrayed in this novel but Ellen Olenska is one of the main characters who grab the attention of the society because of her particular cultural fashion and social manner that clashes with the formal and unusual cultural views of the society. Ellen wanted to become a trend setter as she does not want to follow the conventional ways of living life. Researches show that in the 19th century, many European and young rural people came and settled in the industrial areas of America. Taking a look at the cultural practices of the New Yorkers, it could be said that they used to attend Opera, read books, used to go to theater, sports like archery and arranging parties and dinners which depict their culture of conspicuous consumption.

Taking into account, the research work of Joy. L. Davis who says that dinning ritual depicted in this novel are actual reveal the hospitality, hypocrisy, rivalries and consumer culture that is hidden beneath the social posture. This fact cannot be denied that the culture of the same society has been presented in this novel but there could be seen a clash in the ideology. Culture is the driving force that at some point became the cause of alienation and on the other hand, it also becomes the reason behind the bonding that some character exhibit (Singley,et,al,2017). A significant role has been presented by culture for separating and bounding characters of the novel. One of the most obvious examples that have been witnessed in this novel is of Ellen and Newland, who came close to each other because of the radical ideas and unique manners of Ellen. The culture perspective of Ellen was somewhat unusual and unique than the rest of the society. Pieces of evidence show that Ellen's behavior is deemed to unorthodox and she believed that she cannot fit into the old New York.

Ellen has been presented as a rebellion who walked against the way that has been paved by the society. Ellen is one of the main characters of this novel, who courageously challenged the cultural role and showed bravery to make her own rules and norms that would fit her ideology. On the other hand, Newland Archer could be taken as an example who does not directly negate the cultural values. He is the character who got influenced by radical ideas (Edith,et,al,2017). Newland got impressed by the rebellion nature of Ellen as he believed that at least she is the one who is free and truly alive. She is one who is fully enjoying her life without keeping into consideration the restrictions of society that bound us in the cultural cage. One of the major twists in the novel is that despite being engaged with May, Newland when meets Ellen Olenska, he got attracted towards her. Soon this attraction changes into love.

Clash in the way of perceiving culture becomes the reason of alienation of Newland and May as his fiancé behaves like an ordinary female who was just following the rules and the cultural restrictions being imposed on her. It could be analyzed that on one hand culture becomes the cause of the distance between Newland and his fiancé who is keeping herself in the cage of traditions. On the other hand, culture is the same thing that becomes the reason of closeness between Newland and Ellen, who represents to him the freedom and boldness against cultural norms and values that others were following blindly. Ellen was the only character of the novel who showed the freedom that was missing in the suffocating environment of the New York aristocracy.

It has been analyzed that personal freedom used to be sacrificed most of the time as social code enforces some rules that are considered to be good for society. Critical analysis of this novel shows that Newland was unable to follow his passion as despite loving Ellen because of her radical ideas about culture, he married May to fulfill his duty (Bendixen,et,al,2016). It won't be wrong to say that social code and cultural restrictions become the reason of the separation of Ellen and Newland as he was not bold enough to challenge the cultural norms and denied marrying his fiancé. Another factor that has been witnessed in this novel is that in Wharton's world, women are considered to be innocent. Having affair with other men other than the husband, cannot be expected as well accepted by the aristocratic New York society of that time. But Ellen was little different than the rest of the women who were following the set values of the society and the culture. From the in-depth analysis of this novel, it has been analyzed that the cultural role that was assigned to the women of that society was to spend life with one man, keep the home clean and provide continuity but Ellen from the perception of the society was refusing to fulfill this culturally selected role.

Conclusion

So, as a whole, after critically analyzing this novel "The Age of Innocence" it could be said that culture is the main reason which causes of the alienation of Newland as he first got attracted to Ellen because of her boldness to reject the cultural restrictions. On the other hand, culture also became the reason for the connection between May and Newland as he lacked the will and confidence to refuse the culturally decided role. In this novel, most of the characters are being portrayed as the blind followers of traditions and culture who sacrificed their happiness and freedom just for the sake of making the society happy by following the set patterns being decided by their culture. it won't be wrong to say that culture became the reason of alienation as well as connection in this novel.

The main proclamation of this book was the creation of a powerful emotional impression on the reader. It is written by Roggenkamp in 2005. “The fundamental principle for this was the correct construction of the composition of the work and the selection of artistic means that would best serve to create the main effect” ( p. 234). This is an emotional shock created in the reader’s mind at the climax by all means that are in the artist’s arsenal, Poe himself called the “totality effect”. Gabriel is the protagonist in the story who wants to be a writer. The writings of Gabriel are confined to journalism and the beginning of the story revolves around the social event of ‘Morkan’s annual dance’. Gabriel is Morkan’s nephew who participates in the dance with his wife Gretta. As he leaves the party he encounters a new story from the past about his wife.

The central character of the story, Gabriel exhibits lack of interest in Irish politics. He is struggling to find something exciting as he is bored by his friends, relatives and the entire country. He expresses that he is sick of his own country. Gabriel is also the victim of abrupt departure and is often unable to control his emotions. The deeper analysis of the character depicts that he is misfit in the society due to his indifferent nature. He values literature more than politics and strives to make name in writing.

Gabriel starts feeling that he and his wife failed to fulfill their duties and roles. He recalls the intimate moments of courtship and takes his wife to the hotel. He believes that by taking her to the hotel they could start a new adventurous life. In fulfilling his desires he remains unaware of his wife’s feelings. He finds that Gretta had been in love with Furey who died when she moved to Dublin.

By living few days in the hotel Gabriel encounters the reality of his life that revealed his self-image. He attempted to reevaluate his relationship with Gretta that resulted in disappointment. He explored that hos wife had been in deep romantic relationship with other guy who died in her separation. By the end he realizes that he had never attained the real contentment in his relationship or life.
