Rhetorical Analysis, Meat’s not Green!

The main focus of the advertisement is the slogan; Meat’s not Green. This slogan is presented in bold black color so that it could be more captivating for audience. Meat’s Not Green presents the idea that only saving non- renewable resources would not be sufficient to protect earth from global warming rather avoiding live stock consumption is actually the durable treatment of this global trouble.

The advertisement presents a locality street where wall chalking is used for imprinting the slogan; “Meat’s not Green” whereas four male representatives belonging to various age-groups are pointing to the slogan with varying facial expressions and body gestures. The person at the front side is wearing black attire and pointing to the slogan with emphasizing body language and facial expressions. It is worth noting that this individual is apparently a youngster who is concerned about the global warming issue and future of the earth due to which he points to the slogan and adds to the significance of its latent meaning.

The other person is a middle- aged man at the most right side of the image with white hair; he is wearing black dress as well. He, too, points to the slogan for emphasizing its meaning however unlike the first one, he is found to be in more informal and lighter mood. As far as his emotional state is concerned, he seems resilient and optimistic with positive body language. This depiction indicates that although global warming is a devastating issue yet we can overcome this through best possible efforts.

The third person stands next to the above presented man; wears black dress and seems like a teenager. The notable thing about this person is his body gestures and facial expressions; he seems thoughtful about the newly learned facts regarding meat destruction. His gestures depict the thoughtfulness of common teenager about the potential future climate issues resulting from global warming and their associated solution suggesting the active mitigating of meat consumption due to several logical reasons.

The fourth person is standing next to the above mentioned person, just right to the slogan. He is a teenager and wearing black dress as well. Like others, his body language and emotional depiction is worth noting. His body language is quite questionable; he seems frightened as depicted through the position of his hands and facial expressions. It seems as if he is completely aware of the potential destructions of global warming and wants ultimate, everlasting and effective solutions to reduce this global threat.

As far as the color transitions and font styles are concerned, black color is dominating followed by the green. The slogan is written in black and larger text that are grabbing audience interest in fairly captivating manner. However, description of the slogan; Meat destroys the environment is written in small, green font placed extreme right below the banner. It is quite hard to read it without paying considerable attention, only those who are willing enough can read it after paying deliberate attention. This detailed text box written in green color defines the purpose and explanation of the slogan and underlying reasons behind calling meat as a polluting agent.

In a nutshell, this advertisement casts youngsters and highlights the significance of teen interests in realizing the adverse impact of meat consumption on the environment as live stock uses considerable green resources for survival and produces waste excretions that pollute the earth more than the man himself. Hence, through presenting logical facts and emotional depictions, this advertisement creates a meaningful persuasive piece of visual imagery for galvanizing the youth to contribute their meaningful efforts to lessen the impact of global warming on earth.

Visual Analysis: Salvador Dali the Persistence of Memory

In the 20th century, the Spanish artist Salvador Dali remained one of the best known for his perplexing, outlandish and weird surrealist art. ‘The Persistence of Memory' (1931) is ranked among his most famous works and regarded by many to be a masterpiece in surrealist art. It was first displayed in 1932 at the Julien Levy gallery and has remained on display in the ‘Museum of Modern' Art in New York since 1934 CITATION MoM15 \l 1033 (MoMA). The work is widely recognized within the artistic community and has frequently been referenced in popular culture, often referred to as the ‘The Melting Watches' and ‘Melting Clocks.' The paper will attempt to present an analysis of this surrealist work of art and attempt to arrive at the meaning behind its symbolism through a visual and semiotic analysis through multiple perspectives.

Observing the Persistence of Memory, one can see the light blue horizon fading downwards to yellow from blue across the painting’s top quarter. A body of water sits under the skyline that seems to be part of a lake. The water connects along the skyline until it touches the mountains situated at the right, in front of which sits a small pebble. On the left of the body of water, a rectangular shaped, elevated platform can be seen with dark brown edges in front of which lies another small pebble. Further in front lies a tree which seems lifeless missing all its branches and leaves, save for one, and has a hollow top. A single branch can be seen holding a pocket that is silver in color and appears to be melting at the branch’s end, the remaining part shows the dial from 3 to 9, while one hand of the watch points at 6, the other is apparently missing CITATION Dal06 \l 1033 (Dali). The tree rests above a cube that is shaped like a rectangular desk at the bottom left whose closer edge is off the canvas. There are two more watches resting on the desk, one of which looks like a melted gold watch that hangs halfway through the desk while its hands rest at five and seven. A fly is resting atop the clock that casts a minute shadow. The other watch is bronze and seems to have been covered by a swarm of insects. It, however, is not melting. The ground is colored in dark brown and almost black in some areas. A white object rests on the ground atop of which is a melted silver clock while the object rests on some object buried between one of its edges. The white object has a certain nose like appearance but has no limbs or other human-like characteristics.

A visual interpretation of the painting reveals that life is something that is full of choices and is very fast paced and thus produces outcomes that we do not find to be favorable, yet we still manage to move on. The clocks indicate that there is more meaning hidden behind the painting. The silver watch that rests on the tree symbolizes a time that has passed only recently, whereas the golden watch is representative of life's best years that are escaping slowly from oneself. The bronze watch, in contrast, it symbolizes a time that the artist wanted to forget and move on from. The clock atop the white object represents the place where the artist resides currently and is trying to live through. On the two opposite sides of the painting, the two pebbles may be symbolizing separation of a person from his or her lover. The mountains are cracked which symbolize that hardships and barriers faced by one before they are able to reach a stable phase of life, while blue platform that is raised represents the path to a better life, while the dead tree symbolizes that nothing lasts forever. The shadow of the fly might be symbolizing the artist wanting to escape reality.

Surrealist artists often try to represent visually how dreaming may look like, in their art. The genre may seem to be disjointed and lacking sense, but when observed closely, it allows one to reflect how the different events, places, objects and people that come together in our dreams could look like to the observant. Therefore to interpret the meaning of the painting, it is helpful to interpret it from the perspective of the artist being in a state of dream. In that case, the melting clocks might be representing the irregular time passage we experience in a dream. They are melting because they do not carry significance in the state of dream. From this perspective, the artist may be hinting at illustrating to the observers how irrelevant and useless time is when one is in a state of dream, while in real life we are striving hard to complete our work on time, or reach our desired destination within time. Time is the central character of his painting CITATION McC07 \l 1033 (McCall). There is also a debate within artists whether the clocks represent pocket watches or wall clocks since the former were popular accessories at the time when the painting was drawn. The surrealists would often mock what would normally be taken as very serious by those in the working class or the middle class, which seems to have included time, something they valued a lot in their lives CITATION Kim05 \l 1033 (Grant). The other thing important in surrealist art are sarcasm, jokes, satire, and humor. There is a hint of sarcasm in the way the clocks are painted, which in the dream world are losing their power and melting out. The ants which are eating the bronze clock seem to be symbolizing the non-permanent nature of the way we keep a record of time, which, as the artist points out, is in a state of decay.

Other ways of interpreting the painting through a visual analysis are the autobiographical account. From this perspective, the land on which the tree, desk, and clocks are resting seems to be infertile and barren. This may be representative of the different landscapes that may have existed in the surroundings of where Dali lived. It could also be reflecting Dali’s childhood memories of the surroundings he had grown up in. The land seems to be uninhabited and abandoned which reflects that the artist has not accessed his childhood memories for a long time. In this perspective, the molten silver clock on the tree could be representing the laundry which would be hanged upon trees for drying. Moreover, from the autobiographical perspective, the clocks could symbolize the artist’s adolescence meting or fading away because a lot of time has passed since that time and the time at which he drew the painting.

To conclude, Dali’s famous work ‘the Persistence of Memory’ with its famous melting watches can symbolize a range of different meanings depending on the perspective which we wish to adopt while conducting an analysis. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most iconic and recognizable works of surrealist art of the century. While it may not be possible to arrive at the true meaning of what the artist implied when drawing the painting, it is quite evident that there are different artistic, historical and autobiographical meanings embedded and hidden within the art, and may just as well be representing them all.

Introduction

“My Friend Dahmer” is one of the most celebrated graphic novels of John "Derf" Backderf. In this graphic novel, he has discussed one of his teenager friends, Jeffrey Dahmer who later becomes a notorious serial killer. It was the time, when they were in high school called Revere high school and Junior High school at East view. In this novel, it could be seen that Dahmer commits his first murder just after two weeks of high school graduation.

Discussion

By taking a look at this graphic novel, it could be said that images that have been used by Derf, enhances the understanding of narration. It is interesting to note that Derf used visual images in order to appeal reader's senses so that they could develop an understanding with the character and action about which the writer is discussing. By analyzing character of Dahmer, it could be realized that Backderf has portrayed him as a monster who ruthlessly kills innocent people. Shadowed faces imply in the reader's mind nefarious thoughts. Negative thoughts make his image as a villain clearer to the readers, as Dahmer is different from the rest of the people (Earle,et,al,2017). Backderf has taken help of both visuals and words for facilitating his readers. There are multiple panels that are creating tension that what Dahmer is doing. Another major thing that could be seen in these images is that Backderf is trying to play with reader's expectations. Intentionally, the writer has left gaps because the visual narrative is as insightful as the words and reader has to make connection for filling these gaps. After filling those gaps, the reader would be able to understand this visual novel.

This thing cannot be denied that in each form of writing or literature there could be seen some major elements that are particularly used in these different forms of writing. It has been seen that like literary devices (metaphors, similes, and others) that are used in narrative texts, there are some key elements in graphic novels as well. Stylistic art is one of the most important things that best present the ideas that the writer wanted his readers to interpret. Backderf has used stylistic art for grasping the attention of his readers. Stylistic art is a way of pointing towards some specific things such as in this selected novel of Backderf, it could be seen that by using stylistic art, Backderf is pointing towards the unusual nature of Dahmer. These stylistic patterns and art work, are presenting Dahmer in a wired way, who is a friendless person. One of the main stylistic arts that has been used, is the use of silhouette that actually evokes a tone. Darkness that has been presented as a stylistic part of his art actually pointed towards the darkness of Dahmer’s head and soul (Backderf,et,al,2012). Stylistic art helps the writer for presenting his feelings in the best possible way. It is one of the most suitable ways through which the writer can directly inculcate things and ideas into the minds of his readers.

By taking an in-depth analysis of this graphic novel, there could be witnessed various elements such as themes, symbolism, plot, character, and imagery, etc. This novel revolves around two main characters, one is the writer Backderf and other is Dahmer. There are various themes that have been depicted by the writer in this graphic novel such as the theme of friendship, isolation, and neglect. By reading this novel it becomes obvious that Backderf has presented this story in a different way than the rest of the world. In this novel, the writer has tried to make his readers realize that some people need help from society for living a normal life.

Character of Dahmer has been presented in such a way that he really needs help from society in the form of care, concern, attention and support so that he could survive like an ordinary human being. In this novel, the writer is pointing and criticizing the inhumane nature of humans. Different symbols have been used to relate the monstrous and unnatural people who commit atrocities and serious crimes. Dahmer becomes a notorious serial killer as his way of killing is just beyond the human capacity. Backderf is criticizing youth of that time and has asked them a question that where were they when pessimism and darkness were approaching Dahmer. It is a visual novel so, there could be seen many signs and symptoms and one of the main symbols of this novel is darkness. Darkness is being used by Backderf for depicting the hollowness and loneliness of Dahmer who because of the negligence of society becomes a criminal.

Conclusion

In this novel, Jeffrey imitates spasms that clearly show his backpack. His act of making noises in class, appeals to the writer and his friends as they found him different than the rest of the class. Unusual character and behavior of Dahmer catch Derf's attention and he draws him at various situations. So as a whole, it could be said that this visual novel is spotting a light at various aspects of life. It is also teaching a great lesson that it is the responsibility of society to take care of the people who are struggling in life (Trinkwitz,et,al,2018). Little care and concern would change many lives in a positive way but at the same time, negligence would have drastic effects on society as well. Visual novels assist the readers in making strong mental images of the character that helps them in having a great understanding. The graphic novel is one of the best pieces of literature that appeals to reader’s senses.

Owing to an economic recession and social inequalities many people had to lose their jobs and therefore are forced to live below the living standards. The unequal distribution of wealth hinders social mobility as well thus making rich people richer while poor people are poorer. Despite several policies being made to diminish the economic inequalities the issue still persists in our society. In “The New York Times”, a well-known team of income inequality researchers Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel along with their fellow Gabriel produced a chart that depicts a change in income between the years 1980 to the year 2014 while summarizing the issue of inequality that is prevailing in the society ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"RquATKG5","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}Opinion | Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart\\uc0\\u8212{}The New York Times,\\uc0\\u8221{} n.d.)","plainCitation":"(“Opinion | Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart—The New York Times,” n.d.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":258,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/sbFMNDWM/items/6YKDCC2R"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/sbFMNDWM/items/6YKDCC2R"],"itemData":{"id":258,"type":"webpage","title":"Opinion | Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart - The New York Times","URL":"https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/08/07/opinion/leonhardt-income-inequality.html","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",12,17]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“Opinion | Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart—The New York Times,” n.d.). The image is given below:

In the image above the red line resembles a classic hockey-stick graph. The red line is flat and is close to the zero before it spikes up at the end. The immediate spike in the graph depicts how a few affluent received a significant amount of raise recently while many people were paid fewer wages. The grey line on the chart depicts a change in income from the year 1946 to 1980. The message conveyed from the image is simple yet alarming. The image shows that many middle-class and poor people were not able to receive healthy raises despite this they had to pay a large amount of taxes than the rich people. The inflation after the raises in the rates of tax creates more problems for the poor and middle-class people thus increasing income inequalities.

The issue of income inequality is increasing day by day in the context of ethos it is necessary that people in the community must collaborate with the policymakers to make policies that help in reducing economic inequalities. In the context of logos, a macro view of inequality reflects that continued inequality may lead to social and political unrest thus people must cooperate with each other to improve their surroundings. In the context of pathos, economic inequality gives rise to several other issues such as homelessness that can severely affect an individual.

In a nutshell, there is a need to revise old policies to ensure economic stability by removing the income inequality among different groups of people.

W.E.B Du Bois

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born on February 23, 1868, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was an American historian, sociologist, pan activist, civil rights activist, writer, author, and editor who also became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895. Because of his contributions to the African-American community, he is mostly considered as a Black elite who wanted equal rights for African Americans and supported the civil rights movement. He was the first person who opposed the Atlanta Compromise between Booker T. Washington, the Tuskegee Institute and Southern White leaders in 1895. The Atlanta Compromise said that African Americans would receive basic education and due process under the law, but ultimately, they submitted to white political rule and segregation.

Martin Luther King led a movement that resulted in the eradication of segregation, a social, political system that Dubois lived under. Dubois was fundamental in founding the NAACP which played a part in the eradication of that system. The NAACP fought the legal battle while Martin Luther King’s movement brought international notoriety to the plight of black people in the South ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"ojUBRU4V","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Wright 11)","plainCitation":"(Wright 11)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":481,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/XYVEDSCV"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/XYVEDSCV"],"itemData":{"id":481,"type":"webpage","abstract":"Under the leadership of W. However, Martin Luther King’s leadership was effective in the material realm, while Dubois was much more of an intellectual giant. Dubois was a man of immense sophistication, who graduated with a Ph.D. from Harvard and studied in Germany. His ideas were more universalist. So, for the everyday Black American, Martin is a hero but for the black intellectual, Dubois provided cognitive frameworks which were a point of departure for the intelligentsia, which included Martin. There was an ideological fight between two men having completely distinct set of attributes as MLK was fighting to have Black Americans recognized as equal to their white counterparts but W.E.B's struggle was to have Black people in America recognized as people at all, possessing any rights at all. Du Bois influenced the people of his community in many ways and being an intellectual, he believed in strengthening the positions of ignored communities through political power. Du Bois's influence can be seen through his works and how he chooses to deal with racism. DuBois thought that racism had to be combatted and fought because it was unnatural and immoral ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"LULfJCDO","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Lemann)","plainCitation":"(Lemann)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":479,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/6W98PL5H"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/6W98PL5H"],"itemData":{"id":479,"type":"article-magazine","abstract":"W.E.B. His ideas can best be seen in the black movements of the 1960s including both the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement. All the injustices and inequalities made Du Bois speak up about these issues and through his poems, he addressed the core issues of racism. Du Bois wrote about the miserable life of his people but white people were not ready to accept and respond nicely to his scrupulously correct portrayal of the brutality, hostility, and hypocrisy of white Americans towards Black Americans.

His language was based on factual grounds which came as shocking to the blacks as well because he opposed the conciliatory policies of Booker T. Washington and his followers. The poem is his greatest achievement which had a profound effect on the perception of black people and shows that Du Bios was more of a sophisticated person who believed in practicality and rational policies for his people. Although he was a great leader who spoke for equal rights, people do not see him as a great leader because of his opposed nature. Most of the Americans questioned his citizenship and challenged his efforts when he grew critical of America’s foreign policy and capitalism and praised the achievements of communism of the Soviet Union. This was not acceptable to America and thus he left America in 1961. As for now, Du Bois’s works are the major part of American Literature and African Americans are very inspired by his struggle. His works are still valid today which remained important in race studies for the last few years. Recently, an event was held in America to celebrate the publication of the “The Souls of Black Folk” and a staged adaptation of the book also got premiered in New York. His poems are like songs of sorrow that teach us about race, injustice, and inequalities. His writing is appreciated and acknowledged in American literature.

Walmart vs. Target

Walmart and Target are the two prosperous companies in America where most Americans shop daily. Sam Walton founded Walmart in 1962 and his only mission was to save the money of his people and help them live a better life while Target is a bit older than Walmart and was founded by George Dayton in 1902. Both the stores are low-cost retail stores with huge revenues and mostly focus on things that could be afforded by people belonging to a different financial background. They have a huge supply of different varieties of products, thus share similarities and differences at the same time. The level of similarity and difference can be seen in terms of costs, variety of products, and the services they provide to their customers.

Walmart is the world’s largest retail company that operates around 11,368 stores throughout the world and is five times larger than its primary competitor, Target. Target, on the other hand, is the second-largest retail company in the United States that operates 1743 stores throughout the country. Both the stores have expanded their business through an online delivery service because it makes shopping easy, quick and hassle-free. Being the top leading companies, both have similarities and differences regarding the costs of their products. Walmart and Target are known for their cheap products as they make everything affordable for all kinds of people. However, there are some differences as Walmart is cheaper than Target in terms of the cost of the products ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"E1rY7hd4","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Mirzayev)","plainCitation":"(Mirzayev)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":452,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/HK56Q6EB"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/HK56Q6EB"],"itemData":{"id":452,"type":"webpage","abstract":"Walmart's business model depends more on the lowest cost, while Target angles more toward profit margin and youthful image.","container-title":"Investopedia","language":"en","title":"Walmart vs. Target Business Model: What's the Difference?","title-short":"Walmart vs. Target Business Model","URL":"https://www.investopedia.com/articles/active-trading/070715/target-vs-walmart-whos-winning-big-box-war.asp","author":[{"family":"Mirzayev","given":"Elvin"}],"accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",12,3]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Mirzayev). The prices of the products in Target are slightly higher than the prices of Walmart. For example, at Walmart, the cost of the split sheets paper towels is 14 dollars which includes 12 rolls, 168 sheets per roll, and 924 square feet total while at Target, the cost of split sheets paper towels is 12 dollars but it does not include all the items like Walmart’s split sheets. Similarly, toilet papers cost 13 dollars at Target and 10 dollars at Walmart but napkins at both the stores share the same prize. Kitchen trash bags, sandwich bags, and liquid detergents are cheaper than those at Target.

Both companies are known for the variety of products they sell and have everything in their stores, from paper towel to big machines. Walmart stores contain almost everything that Target stores lack but the quality of these products is not as good as the ones at Target and focuses more on the youthful image and profit margin ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"MqyAouJ7","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(DePietro)","plainCitation":"(DePietro)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":450,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/P9VJUDPG"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/P9VJUDPG"],"itemData":{"id":450,"type":"webpage","abstract":"Shop smart by getting the best Walmart and Target deals.","container-title":"GOBankingRates","language":"en","title":"The Best Things to Buy at Walmart and Target","URL":"https://www.gobankingrates.com/saving-money/shopping/best-things-to-buy-at-target-walmart/","author":[{"family":"DePietro","given":"Andrew"}],"accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",12,3]]},"issued":{"date-parts":[["2019",3,19]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (DePietro). They both generate gigantic revenues through these products but they show a difference in the amount and quality of these products. Customers can buy a variety of electronic products such as digital cameras, printers, MP3 players, laptops, and computers. Along with these things, Walmart also offers sporting goods, grocery items, and baby products. They mostly have a limited number of products and unlike Target, Walmart also sells the products of different brands so people who are looking for brands or a simplified style can easily get access to everything they need. Walmart has photo services inside their stores and online and in 2006, it began to offer prescription programs for four dollars which means it offers a discounted medication for patients. The monthly prescription by Walmart for mail order services and pickup in-store is for long-term medications. It also offers many financial services that include credit cards, bill payments, debit cards, check cashing, debit cards, and check to print. However, Target does not have enough services like Walmart but both the companies provide an online service for their products and use the services of Amazon for their online products.

The discussion aimed to establish a comparison between two of the huge companies in the U.S. as both have the same mission of providing people cheap and good products. Both companies are good in their own way and hence have their own costumers.

War against racism

Introduction

Since several centuries, racism remained a prominent topic in American literature. The intensity and implications of racism transitioned drastically from 1700s-2000s. The threat of racism has occurred across the world and has caused widespread disparities and differences among communities, ethnicities, races and religions. A critical appraisal of the matter reflects racism has significant impact on the welfare and establishment of societies. Racism played a big role in everyone’s life whether they see it or not. Bias, religion, color, discrimination and prejudice have remained the guiding principles of racism as observed in the present and historic content. It is essential to discuss the nature and impact of racism in the contemporary era and in the past.

Discussion

In the 1700s, Racism began to grow rapidly in certain places in Europe. During this time period in Europe, there was a decrease in workers and no one had a place to turn to or find people to work for them. Black people became the working class for the Europeans and other states advanced to pursue the footsteps of the Europeans to suppress black and deem them inferior. The social status of blacks became property, not people. Laws were passed such as ones allowing for slavery and allowing harm to be inflicted on slaves ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"biCym2RK","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}The Development of Racist Theories and Ideas | Revealing Histories})","plainCitation":"(The Development of Racist Theories and Ideas | Revealing Histories)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":359,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/A4QPYWT2"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/A4QPYWT2"],"itemData":{"id":359,"type":"webpage","title":"The development of racist theories and ideas | Revealing Histories","URL":"http://revealinghistories.org.uk/legacies-stereotypes-racism-and-the-civil-rights-movement/articles/the-development-of-racist-theories-and-ideas.html","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,17]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (The Development of Racist Theories and Ideas | Revealing Histories). Europeans treated “all servants imported and brought into the country who were not Christians in their native country shall be accounted and be slaves.” (Chuhan.) Racism began to impact everyone around the world as more slave laws began to rise.

In the 1800s, American slaveholders began using the bible to justify their actions of having slaves. Even though some knew that having slaves and performing these acts were wrong, slaveholders would use the bible to justify their actions. Slaveholders would use Genesis 9: 25-27, (“Cursed be Canaan!  The lowest of slaves, will he be to his brothers. “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. May God extend Japheth’s territory; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”) to allow their slave actions. Pro-slavery Polemicists would constantly search the Bible to find more verses that would justify their actions. The church says, “Even a parent abuses, when looked at in the right light, It works out for the best,” (Bishop Williams). No matter what Americans did, they used texts in the bible to justify their wrongdoings ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"i6kdOPfA","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}What the Bible Says about Domestic Violence\\uc0\\u8221{})","plainCitation":"(“What the Bible Says about Domestic Violence”)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":355,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/PCFTTMMC"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/PCFTTMMC"],"itemData":{"id":355,"type":"webpage","title":"What the Bible says about domestic violence","container-title":"SAFER","abstract":"Understanding what the Bible says about faith issues that relate to domestic violence is a key step for any churches engaging in this area.","URL":"https://www.saferresource.org.au/the_bible_on_domestic_family_violence","language":"en","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,17]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“What the Bible Says about Domestic Violence”). Although the 19th century had a horrible outcome for slaves the 20th century was going to bring up one of the most controversial court cases in history.

In the 1900s, the most contentious topic was that there was discrimination in schools that would not stop. This would turn into one of the most influential court cases ever. Brown vs. The Board of Education in Topeka Kansas was one of the most impactful court cases of the 19th century. Brown decided to go against the Board of Education to fight the right of “Separate but equal” because his daughter was denied into a white school and instead had to go to school miles away. Linda Brown and Thurgood Marshall went against the Supreme Court in dividing schools because it was against the 14th amendment, all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"stz0ReVZ","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}Digital History})","plainCitation":"(Digital History)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":357,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/NSMNJ5ZF"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/NSMNJ5ZF"],"itemData":{"id":357,"type":"webpage","title":"Digital History","URL":"http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/disp_textbook.cfm?smtID=3&psid=1120","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,17]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Digital History). Therefore, they are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside. Thurgood suggested that “Segregated schools are inherently unequal,” (Warren). The case was known as the very first experience where a potential voice was raised against the radical practice of racism in the United States of America (USA).

To this day in the 21th-century acts of violence and racism are still occurring. New Zealand was struck by a violent act against its own people. A mosque was fired upon by a man who killed 50 people. This is why the war against racism needs to be fought and won. People need to learn to love one another not hate because then acts like this will continue and none desires to witness it. In Asia, most of the instances of racism are based on religious grounds and religion is utilized as a source to manipulate people to gain personal motive. In other parts of the world, the African societies and black people are still looked down upon by the white. Similar instances are observed across the world in different regions ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"0iqfddb9","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}Structural Racism in America | Urban Institute})","plainCitation":"(Structural Racism in America | Urban Institute)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":361,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/MHR49N2E"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/MHR49N2E"],"itemData":{"id":361,"type":"webpage","title":"Structural Racism in America | Urban Institute","URL":"https://www.urban.org/features/structural-racism-america","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,17]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Structural Racism in America | Urban Institute). It is essential to highlight racism is manifested in each region where the separation of sects and deeds often create controversy. Moreover, the division based on class and color has been the dominant theme of racism. The essential traits of racism are deeply rooted in the societies and described as, “because these are class actions, because of the wide applicability of this decision, and because of the great variety of local conditions, the formulation of decrees in these cases presents problems of considerable complexity” (Warren).

Another critical aspect is the enhanced culture of racism on the internet platforms. The technology is inflicted substantial harm to communities and the youth is the most vulnerable entity. Cyber racism involves looking down upon others and raising the emblem of white supremacy on internet platforms. Prejudice and bias have occupied the paradigm of social networking sites ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"4T5vghIR","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}This Is How Racism Is Being Spread across the Internet\\uc0\\u8221{})","plainCitation":"(“This Is How Racism Is Being Spread across the Internet”)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":353,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/5S4AQ93I"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/5S4AQ93I"],"itemData":{"id":353,"type":"webpage","title":"This is how racism is being spread across the internet","container-title":"World Economic Forum","abstract":"There is a dark side to the internet that sees far-right groups exploit its unique features to spread divisive ideas, racial hate and mistrust.","URL":"https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/02/racism-in-a-networked-world-how-groups-and-individuals-spread-racist-hate-online/","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",5,17]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“This Is How Racism Is Being Spread across the Internet”). For instance, a person can post a radical racist post or comment on FaceBook and can be appreciated by others who share a similar set of thoughts. As suggested by the inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW), “Humanity connected by technology on the web is functioning in a dystopian way. We have online abuse, prejudice, bias, polarization, fake news, there are lots of ways in which it is broken” (Lee).

Conclusion

To conclude, racism is a reoccurring act which is prevalent across the world. We have fought it over and over again, we still have a long way to go. Racism began in Europe as black became the dedicated hard-working class. American slaveholder began using the Bible to justify their actions against slavery. Brown vs. The Board of Education became one of the most influential court cases ever brought to light. Acts of Racism continue to occur today as a mosque was shot and ended with 50 people killed. Racism is reoccurring and still lives in our society no matter who we think we are. Racism impacts everyone directly and indirectly whether we notice it or not it still harms us in some way, this is why it needs to end. It harms everyone regardless of their superiority, inferiority and class. The need of the hour is to eradicate the menace of racism through potential campaigns and awareness programs on the mass media and the support of the people. It has been destroying the emotions, lives and beliefs of people which needs to be stopped and removed for good. The integral advancement of society is the key to overcome these issues related to prejudice, bias and discrimination. Since these issues are protracted, it is a challenging task to curb them and will require a strategic approach and stringent laws to abrogate racism form the world.

Title: The War of the Worlds Scare

“The War of the Worlds” is one episode of renowned American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theater on the Air. The radio episode was directed by actor Orson Welles. It was an adoption of the novel by H. G. Wells of the same name published in 1898 which is the narrative of Martian invasion ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"hSpBmq9M","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Wells)","plainCitation":"(Wells)"},"citationItems":[{"id":1159,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/5UAZL3GZ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/5UAZL3GZ"],"itemData":{"id":1159,"type":"book","title":"The war of the worlds","publisher":"Broadview Press","ISBN":"1-55111-353-8","author":[{"family":"Wells","given":"Herbert George"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2003"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Wells). The show was performed live which functioned as the Halloween episode on the prime time on Sunday, October 1938. The show was aired by Columbia Broadcasting System radio network and the show became very famous later. The episode created a panic among its listening audience. However, the scale of that panic is disputed as there were few listeners of this program. The performance followed the story of the novel about the Martian invasion of the earth. The most important change made by Welles was that it was written and played in the form of a news broadcast regarding an attack from Mars. This technique was adopted to create a dramatic effect.

The radio play was very realistic, and the sounds created by Welles and his actors were producing the terrifying impacts ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"JIpEjoVN","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Naremore)","plainCitation":"(Naremore)"},"citationItems":[{"id":1162,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/PJ8YT62S"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/PJ8YT62S"],"itemData":{"id":1162,"type":"article-journal","title":"The Man Who Caused the Mars Panic Orson Welles makes waves with his radio broadcast of War of the Worlds","container-title":"HUMANITIES-WASHINGTON-","page":"38-39","volume":"24","issue":"4","author":[{"family":"Naremore","given":"J."}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2003"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Naremore). An announcer reported extensive panic broke out in the neighborhood of the landing sites and thousands of people tried to flee. In fact, it was not far from reality. The fact was that hundreds of listeners of the show supposed that real Martian invasion was on the go. Panic broke in the city, and hundreds of terrified civilians jammed the highway, in New Jersey, seeking escape from the alien marauders. Personnel started to beg police for the masks that could save them from toxic gas. Not only this, they requested the electric companies for the purpose of turning off the lights so to remain hidden from Martians. Frightened women went to an Indianapolis church and shouted “New York has been destroyed! It’s the end of the world! Go home and prepare to die!” When the news of real-life panic disclosed in CBS studio, Welles went on air to convey listeners that they are listening to a fiction based show.

There were also the rumors about the suicides. However, they were not confirmed. The producer received the call and interrupted the show for the announcement of its fictional content, but at that time it was just a moment away from its first break. Soon after the actor Stefan Schnabel finished his performance. The room filled with a policeman and a massive struggle started to stop the cops from stopping the show. The members of the show were locked into a small back office and cops started collecting the script of the show. The telephone switchboard at the building was only able to handle a few calls and Welles alone was busy in explaining and assuring the audience that they were safe. Welles got informed that the news was being fleshed I Times Squares with the bulletin “ORSON WELLES CAUSES PANIC." The team was aware of the panic that it would create, but they were not familiar with the fact that it would go to that extent. Within three weeks of the show broadcast, at least 12500 articles were published in the newspapers about it. However, it dropped from the front pages after a few days. The broadcast was also referenced by Adolf Hitler in a speech in Munich on 8th November 1938.

Numerous factors contributed to the panic, few listeners just heard the portion of news and mistook as the genuine broadcast due to the tension and anxiety preceding the World War II. Thousands of those people hurried to share the fake reports with others. In addition, they called CBS, police and the newspapers to ask about the truth of the news. Majority of the newspapers supposed that the huge number of calls and scattered reports of audience rushing about and even leaving their places proved that the presence of mass panic ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"Kl4FcfGI","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Cantril)","plainCitation":"(Cantril)"},"citationItems":[{"id":1163,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/JDGJ23YU"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/JDGJ23YU"],"itemData":{"id":1163,"type":"book","title":"The invasion from Mars: A study in the psychology of panic","publisher":"Routledge","ISBN":"1-351-48070-7","author":[{"family":"Cantril","given":"Hadley"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2017"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Cantril), however, such behavior was never common. Welles used the real cities names in Europe to add to the reality of the play and make it more acceptable for the audience. American audience listening to the real names of cities were surrounded by the terror. Following the effect of the show, three affiliates of CBS have abandoned to air the delayed broadcast of the show which was already scheduled.

Many listeners missed the introduction of the show and found themselves listening live from New York’s Hotel Park Plaza to "The music of Ramon Raquello and his Orchestra." The music as soon interrupted by the news bulletins that explosions of gas had been, unfortunately, observed on planet Mars. People thinking that they have been invaded by Martians flooded radio and newspaper with calls and requests to save them. The show actually created the mass hysteria among the people. Mass hysteria is referred to as collective delusions ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"TxUqD7Hd","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Blackman and Walkerdine)","plainCitation":"(Blackman and Walkerdine)"},"citationItems":[{"id":1160,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/9GP5DWUY"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/9GP5DWUY"],"itemData":{"id":1160,"type":"book","title":"Mass hysteria, critical psychology and media studies","publisher":"Palgrave Press","ISBN":"0-333-64781-5","author":[{"family":"Blackman","given":"Lisa"},{"family":"Walkerdine","given":"Valerie"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2001"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Blackman and Walkerdine). The kind of mass hysteria which occurred in the show is known as anxiety hysteria. Such situation is triggered by the personal perception of a frightening force and normally lasts for a day. The factors that contributed to mass hysteria in the show included extraordinary anxiety or excitement, rumors, mass media, political and social context and reinforcements from authorities like the police or military.

Another factor that contributed to the panic and hype was that the people were already on razor’s edge. The news bulletins a commentary of World War II was still in their head, and the way radio show covered the "Munich crisis," became the introduction to World War II. Welles and his company were successful in duplicating the style of those news bulletins in their program, as suggested by a journalist and broadcast historian. Some of the people heard that shells were falling and imagined that they were from Hitler. This created a panic, and they came out on roads, loaded their guns and hid in cellars. News also reveals that in one of the blocks of New Jersey, 2o families rushed out with a wet towel on their faces as a shield to protect them from poisonous gases. An article was published in the New York Times stating that the exaggeration of the show, The War of the Worlds may be interpreted as the revenge of print media as they were badly scooped in last months.

The radio show held a strong Power of imagination over its audience. Especially for the rural audience, it was the main point of contact with the outer world providing them with the news and entertainment. Welles knew how can use the imaginative possibilities of radio and blurred the line between reality and fiction. In addition, the power of mass communication was exercised ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"noSw3OvT","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Hayes and Battles)","plainCitation":"(Hayes and Battles)"},"citationItems":[{"id":1166,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/VKBSRVPE"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/FGhKhGPG/items/VKBSRVPE"],"itemData":{"id":1166,"type":"article-journal","title":"Exchange and interconnection in US network radio: A reinterpretation of the 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast","container-title":"Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast & Audio Media","page":"51-62","volume":"9","issue":"1","author":[{"family":"Hayes","given":"Joy Elizabeth"},{"family":"Battles","given":"Kathleen"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2011"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Hayes and Battles) to create the theatrical illusion and to manipulate the general public and audience. The outcome of that broadcast was never-ending; some people also said that they had lost their trust in media. Welles himself expressed great regret and repentance over his efforts of creating the dramatic effect in the show. After witnessing the after match of his show, which was close to reality and created fear and threat, Welles said that he would never choose something like this again in his career. His idea behind the show was that people might get bored of the unbelievable tale.

Warm Bodies Research Essay

Warm bodies

Warm bodies is the ground- breaking fictional novel written by Isaac Marion who attempted to conjoin the scathing ironies associated with the past of human beings, their crumbling present and conjectural future through centralizing the story on a Zombie. The author was inspired by the physicist Henry Stapp, who propounded the most intriguing yet compelling notion about observer self. He was in view that human being is an excellent observer and creates his own set of beliefs and ideas based on the extractions of existing potentialities that are highly subject- specific in nature. Each observer deduces his own meanings from identical experiences and happenings—based on his preferences and interests (Stapp, 2007).

Human beings are innately predisposed to fill their informational gaps through contemplating past happenings, analyzing and utilizing present resources and assuming the potential experiences or events in the future (Bandura, 1977). The underlying force behind such deliberate attempts is to create appropriate meaning of the world and its phenomena—this is what defines life! As long as we live, we contemplate, conjoin, dissimilate, and replicate—this is the matter of life that we observe, pay attention, save memories, retrieve them when required—this is the process that we call life!

Zombies live substantially lethargic life, but they live! They breathe, eat, struggle for their survival, compete and seek shelter to stay; apparently they live, but what is that curtails? What is that makes them distinctive from their fellow living beings? What is that makes them segregated from the charm of masses? Certainly their emotions! They are emotionless with the super- colossal flat effect on their faces (Marion, 2011). They call themselves dead because their emotional life is dead; they do not have memories that make them cheerful and jubilant. They do not contemplate their past happenings, analyze and utilize present resources and assume the potential experiences or events in the future.

R—the main character of this novel is depicted with some unusual attributes. He is unusually empathic than his fellow dead beings; he is better able to express what he feels than that of his zombie community (Marion, 2011). He is dead but less than his fellow dead beings! The moment of transition arrives when he eats Perry’s brain. Apparently, brain is a piece of flesh not very different in taste than other body parts however it makes a big difference on the part of Zombies. Brain is the best part that they used to eat first, probably due to its better taste? Essentially no! They used to eat brain because it provided them with the interesting memories, thoughts, feelings, fears, and emotions of their prey; and somewhat they liked experiencing the most human things.

Brain is the source of consciousness, past memories and future assumptions—the crux of being human and alive. They liked experiencing the fears, emotions, passion, pride, warmth, sorrow, grief, vehemence, melancholy, sensitiveness, zeal, satisfaction, ecstasy, love, affection, despair, rage, empathy, fervor, despondency, ardor and gut reactions associated with the life experiences and events of their prey. They took great delight in experiencing the most human things as the source of neoteric switching and transmutations for some time (Marion, 2011). It depicted the significance of emotions in human life. Emotions make humans the true humans and lacking emotions end us up making Zombies.

In the end, the strength of emotions was revealed that hit a massive stroke on the identity of zombies. They attack R and his girlfriend Julie considering them as a substantial threat to their identity. Since, transitions in R’s behaviors affected the whole community of Zombies who start developing emotions and losing their deadness under the spell of love (Marion, 2011). R and his girlfriend Julie—when attacked by both the Boneys (zombie) and army personnel— do nothing but a passionate kiss. They knew that they are having a battle not against the savage and brutal ones but against the grotesquely accommodated emotionless creatures and only love has the power to neutralize their state of apathy. As a result, their eyes turned golden and they become alive!

The golden color of their eyes is the color of ultimate brightness of the sunrise and sparkle of the glitters—emergence of a new life, unfamiliar views, newfangled beliefs, unaccustomed emotions and a living to its fullest. This is what makes a difference between being apparently and naturally dead. Zombies were apparently dead because they had no emotions and feelings to rejoice and rejuvenate their memories. A strong spell of love reinvigorated their lives from the scratch.

In my view, this novel provided the readers with the realization of the significance of emotion as an element or more appropriately as a benchmark of liveliness. Zombies became humans when they experienced the stalwart spell of love and passion to which they were unaware before (Marion, 2011). In my view, the plague of decay started when human race abandoned the realization of humanness and became over- burdened by the weight of its sins, resulting in the transmission of destructive forces that altered the appearance of humans so that their evil- driven ugliness could be visible to all. They wandered here and there aimlessly, only striving for food to nurture their survival as living dead-beings. They lacked positive energy that had the potential to convert them into humans again. In a nutshell, darkness can never be eliminated through darkness; only a trivial spark of brightness is enough to do so.

Introduction

Oceans cover up to seventy percent of earth’s surface and are considered to be the largest place for various species to sustain. With the growing population and industrial development, oceans are being made a place for dumping wastes such as oil spills, plastics and garbage etc. Garbage patch in Pacific Ocean has added a lot in the worry of environmentalists who are studying how garbage particularly plastic in ocean is going to be the next global issue. California is struggling to fulfill public need for clean water. Water issue in California is getting worst as water banks ended up by getting out of hands of California and are going into the hands of private company. These private companies are promoting bottled water whereas state of California is facing drought conditions that bare getting worse with time and artificial means are being used. Utilization of plastic bottles for bottled water that are not degradable is the real threat for oceans that has become an issue for the Pacific Ocean and all this situation is adding problems for people who are living in drought-ridden California.

Discussion

In California, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is getting filled with waste material. According to the experts, by 2050 there would be as much plastic as there are fish in Pacific Ocean and it is a real threat that must be taken seriously that is disturbing the marine ecosystem. Not only plastic is polluting the garbage patch but also there are found almost all other items that are used daily. According to Marcus Ericson who is environmental scientist and is studying so that a solution could be found for coping with this issue of garbage that is being dumped in Pacific Ocean as accumulation of plastic in gyre has become a global issue (Gibbs,et,al,2019). Great Pacific garbage patch has grabbed attention of the world. The whole life cycle of plastic is dangerous and garbage patch is accumulated with plastic. Scientists are making choices that would replace plastic with other materials that would be not damaging for the oceans.

California is facing another threatening issue as clean water become rare because of drought. It has been seen that water bottles that are transported all over the United States are promoted by those bottled water brands that are in California (Lebreton,et,al,2018). Not only these bottled water brands are consuming the tap water but also companies like Coca-Cola also use 1.63 liters of water in each bottle of beverage (Moyle,et,al,2018). According to the Pacific Institute, for producing one liter of bottled water three liters of water is used. This fact cannot be denied that both these issues that California is facing (Garbage patch and bottled water) are linked with each other. People using bottled water dumps these bottles and never bothered where these bottles go.

It is quite interesting to note that California is drought-ridden area but leading brands of bottled water i.e. Dasani, Nestle and Aquafina have their plants in California where they simply treat tap that one could have at his/her home (Pierce,et,al,2019). Man always thinks about his own benefit first no matter how much others are going to suffer, the same thing has been witnessed in California as these bottled water companies are taking out water and supplying to the whole United States from the area (California) that needs it the most. Private companies are making a profit but people who really want clean water are not even getting water (Nover,et,al,2019). Authorities are trying their best to cope with this challenge but if private companies would cooperate with government, this issue could be resolved more effectively.

Production of bottled water is not in the favor of California as it is already facing shortage of clean drinking water and people of California are not getting clean water to drink even when companies are extracting and transporting all the water from that area. The hardest part is that natives of California are forced to buy the bottled water at even double price that is being treated in their own areas. They are forced to buy their own thing from private companies. According to Beverage Marketing Corporation, in 2006 there were 31.2 billion liters of water that was sold at schools, homes and offices. People after using this bottled water never think that where these plastic bottles go after they use it. There is a need for energy and oil for making and destroying these plastic bottles but most threatening fact is that these bottles are found in the garbage patch of Pacific Ocean. There would be plastic in garbage patch thrice then the water and this prediction is horrifying for the environmentalists.

Conclusion

Taking in account all the facts and figures that are presented by the experts and researchers, it won’t be wrong to say that state of California must take some action for providing clear water to the natives and if necessary, restrictions should be put against private companies of bottled water. People in drought ridden, California are hardly having clean water and authorities are planting artificial water reservoirs like canals, banks etc. for providing them water. As far as garbage patch in California, is considered, this fact cannot be denied that there is need to take serious steps for controlling this issue that would become a global issue if things are going to go the same way they are now. One of the most important things that have been witnessed is that scientists are trying to make alternative items that are going to replace plastic as it cannot be degraded. Plastic cannot be destroyed easily so scientists are paying attention to making other items that would not be much damaging for the oceans.

King Martin Luther and Kurt Vonnegut constructed their arguments to address the equality that prevailed in America for centuries and the oppressed had fought for it throughout history. Luther’s central argument was on the role of state as he claimed that it can be left to its own device. This was to tell the people that states have to fulfill their duty by taking a fair role that in benefit of all. Vonnegut emphasized more on the individual role of the people in societies claiming that some have attained more success compared to others. He said that some people are more intelligent than others and have managed to attain more success. It also depends on human ability of thinking and abstractly or for long periods.

Luther also argued that people have moral obligations which makes it compulsory for them to follow rules and obligations. However when the governments are performing failry then the people have every right to stand for their rights and revolt. He claimed that blacks have been victims of the inequality. “Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of police brutality is known in every section of this country. Its unjust treatment of Negroes in the courts is a notorious reality” CITATION Mar63 \l 1033 (King). The blacks are targeted by the police that reflects the incompetency of the state which gives the right to the oppressed to revolt.

The second argument made by Vonnegut is the nee for diversity. According to him it is always good to have different groups in the society because it created diversity. About success he argued that it depends on the mental ability of the people. Many people who are not at better positions undergo mental complexities that hinder their potential to reach to the higher level. He states, “the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains” CITATION Kur61 \l 1033 (Vonnegut).

The most controversial argument made by Luther claims that the real barrier to equality for blacks are whites. Luther claimed that the gap is due to the unfair role of the government and those who are at better positions. Without equality blacks will continue to struggle for their basic rights. They have suffered injustice in every aspect of life such as education, politics and justice. He mentions, “we realized that we were the victims of a broken promise” CITATION Mar63 \l 1033 (King). Irretentive of their struggles the state is not denying us equal rights which is wrong.

Vonnegut’s strongest argument was that equality is impossible in the society. He claims that people are unnecessarily wasting their time in the fight for equality because there is always a gap between two groups of the society. This is because one group us always more attractive and enjoy better position in the society compared to the others. Equality that people are striving for might be attained very late such as in 2081. He emphasized on the biological makeup of the people and identified it as one of the prominent reasons for the existence of differences among people and groups. Some people always have better strengths than others while others have more weaknesses. These factors prevent people from becoming equal to those who are enjoying better lifestyles and status in society.

King and Vonnegut made their arguments by analyzing the social conditions. Although their thoughts varied but they attempted to portray the reasons of inequality from their own perspectives.

The epic center in Baltimore

Pennsylvania Avenue is Maryland’s first arts and entertainment district specifically for African Americans. Pennsylvania Avenue was once a heaven for Black entertainers and there are many reasons why Pennsylvania Avenue known as the epic center of African American culture and entertainment.

The historical importance of Pennsylvania Avenue is significant. Pennsylvania Avenue have fallen on hard times during the past some decades. In past , the Chitlin Circuit was a performance avenue that provided cultural acceptance for the African American musicians, comedians and other entertainments in the past. During the racial segregation, Chitlin Circuit was the easiest way for the African American to show their talents. Since Black people were being racially segregated, just like white people doing their stuff like dancing, black people had to make their own place to do things like dancing. During the 1940s till 1960s, Pennsylvania Avenue was known as a platform for latest singers and musicians. The down fall of this center was due to over crowing and over population I the Baltimore city. As the population grew after 1960, the large part of land use d for housing and different businesses/ shops set up in or around Pennsylvania Avenue. The new business trend in 1960s, diminishes the place which was a platform of artist transformed as a walking street with lots of shops around corners of streets.

Comparatively , Pennsylvania Avenue lost its identity as an epic center for African American artist. Now, African Americans have been working to put in the four applications of the Maryland State Arts Council and Department of Commerce to get Pennsylvania Avenue designated for cultural center. And so far, African American people have received a lot of support from each other. Black people have been working with partners all along the “Pennsylvania Avenue corridor”, including “Pennsylvania Avenue”, “Main Street”, “Upton CDC”, “Arch Social Club” and several other organizations. This is not the first-time people talks over black arts and entertainment district have taken place in Baltimore however the movement is strong and African American seems highly motivated to recognize this place as an epic center for artists as it was in past. In past no official application submitted on behalf of the city of Baltimore to designate Pennsylvania Avenue as an art and cultural center.

Concludingly, the Pennsylvania Avenue was known for African American cultural epic center but with the passage of time, the over population put negative effects on this avenue and finally, people are just aware of its name as Pennsylvania Avenue without knowing its cultural value.

Sensory Details in the Story

The writers, to engage the interest of readers, use sensory details in their pieces of information. Ann Hodgman has also mentioned the sensory details in her story “No Wonder they call me a Bitch.” She tells about her experience of tasting the dog food to see whether it has a good taste and is as beneficial as shown in the advertisements. Hodgman consumes dog food for a whole week and finally concludes that the producers of dog food mislead people. The sense of taste is mentioned throughout the story. She explains in details about the taste of dog food that she consumes for the whole week. She tells how cycles tasted, “almost like baked beans.” The cheese of the Gaines Burger is related to Play-Doh and meat is described as, “…. Play-Doh that’s been sitting out on the rug for a couple of hours.” The sense of smell is also described as Hodgman states, “…. stinky fat drenched nuts…” She tries to make her readers feel her words and the experience she has. The sense of vision is also present almost in every detail of the story. Looking at the “extruded piece of redness” is an effective vision depicted by the writer. Hodgman shows the sensory effect of touch and hearing when she states, “…juice spurted all over my hand…” and at another point, “… I came to share his alarm...”

Comparison of Food Categories

There is no confusion about the quality of the Quarter Pounder from McDonald’s and Whooper from the Burger King but the quantity of Whooper is more than the Quarter Pounder. The Whooper actually tastes far better than the Pounder. It has a smoky nice taste that appeals to the taste of burger lovers. Moreover, the Whooper is juicier while the Quarter Pounder is dry.

The two major snack foods Doritos and Generic Taco chips are really loved because of their unique tastes, smells, or appearances. Doritos, being a brand is more famous than the other one but it is not only because it is a brand but also its taste and quality. It is more flavorful and its light color also tempts towards eating it. The cheese of the Taco chips seems to be artificial. The genuine cheesy flavor of Doritos makes the snaCck worth eating CITATION Coo03 \l 1033 (Cooley, 2003).

WEEK 1 Discussion 1 And 2

Discussion 1: Personal Analysis

Keats’ composition titled as The Autumn¸ is of great significance as the poet uses the Anthropomorphism and symbolic tools to reflect the relationship of a woman and the child throughout the composition.

In the composition, the season is presented as a woman whose sensible is carefully emphasized-way the poet has used Anthropomorphism to exhibit his adversarial objectivity. In the third segment, fall season has been presented as a humanly figure. Here the season has been presented like a person. It features that fall season can have sweet melodies of spring so the poet consoles himself. Further, it is communicated that the composition has illustrations which are provides the assistance of anthropomorphism. Using this tool, Keats has tried keeping himself saved for this composition. This technique has incorporated emotions in the composition.

Furthermore, Keats uses Anthropomorphism to delineate autumn in the sorts of persons at various errands. The fragile quality of fall is reverberated in a grainer's hair (15). After made by maturing and assessing the last segment, the season winds up insightful. This assembles the inferring that towards the completion of autumn, after all the steady work of getting the harvest, there is a trademark inclination to consider time and the short existence of consistently and season. Along these lines, the composition reveals the period of autumn as having the human idea of being prepared to analyze the finitude of life and of the self-existence.

Discussion 2: Literary Analysis

"To Autumn" by Keats is a tribute that exhibits the exemplary use of literary tools and rhetoric. The composition utilizes splendid symbolism alongside components of Anthropomorphism that causes the audiences to connect with, relate and partner with the subject. Close evaluation of the composition reveals that in every segment she is depicted as a mother with her child in the principal segment, a woman in the second segment, and is a person in the third segment as one can hear her reaction to the inquiries and request being advanced by the Keats.

Anthropomorphism is the literary tool in which the poets relate a non-human article as a human or symbolized singular utilizing their attributes and highlights as symbolized components. In the composition, the poet has utilized the component of Anthropomorphism and symbolism that enables the audiences to connect with the season and relate their existence with the good and bad times of the period. From another perspective, the period of Autumn additionally identifies with the life of a person that isn't constantly upbeat and spring-like. Rather, it has its very own difficulties and issues.

This composition takes clues from the fall season with broad components of Anthropomorphism. It is said that Anthropomorphism is an alternate technique for articulation thinking about the imaginative ability of the poet. Therefore, both the dormant things and the dynamic musings are attributed to the qualities of living creatures. While skimming through the composition the audiences can find the usage of Anthropomorphism in the three segments of this composition.

Finally, Keats symbolizes the fall season with the child collaborating as human creatures to accomplish the bounty of the period. For instance, being symbolized as laborers/ranchers, they work (7); the poet has endeavored to fend off himself from the point of his composition. This is the sort of a rancher who works regularly in the field. From time to time he is found in significant rest at the period of collecting crops.

Metacommentary

Metacommentary can be defined as additional content that explicates the underlying idea of writers posit in the absence of metacommentary, audiences have higher chances to mixed up the primary proposition of the author that may lead them to establish confusing conclusions (Birkenstein Graff, 2014). Metacommentary is an integral part of the textual medium in a myriad of cases, authors fail to direct the attention of readers to the point they want to prove through content. In such scenarios, metacommentary works as a signpost and navigates the audiences consideration of the underlying conceptualization of the writing piece. The device of metacommentary is also practical to be utilized in educational mtier. For instance, in my research position paper, I can use metacommentary to elaborate on my discussed facades it will be more pragmatic to support my thesis statement with metacommentary rather than just providing a plain explanation of factoids. Moreover, the implementation of the metacommentary will enhance the overall craftiness of my writing style, as well.

According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein in chapter 10 of They Say/I Say, metacommentary is defined as a way of communicating on your claims and telling others how- and how not- to think about them. Graff and Birkenstein say to think of metacommentary as a sort of second text that stands along your main text and explains what it means. Basically, what they are saying is that metacommentary can help the reader or audience better understand the meaning behind what you, as the writer or speaker, is trying to convey. The function in academic writing is to help clarify and elaborate so that the audience can establish a deep understanding of what exactly the author is saying. The deeper the understanding of a text, the more incline the reader is going to be to establish an emotional connection to what the author is saying. I am going to utilize metacommentary in my Research Position Paper draft to help demonstrate my goals with the paper in the introduction, and then also to help elaborate on my argument. By helping elaborate on my argument, I am going to present my passion towards my subject in hopes of my audience becoming just as passionate as I am, or at least just more educated on the subject.

Graff, Gerald., and Cathy Birkenstein. They Say / I Say The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing. Third edition. New York W.W. Norton Company, 2014.

Response

Hi, I appreciate your reflection on the metacommentary and want to add that metacommentary does not merely intertwine with the idea of emotional depiction, and is also significant in demonstrating the backdrop of the main conceptual framework. In research papers, the writer may encounter a point where he feels unable to drive the flow of words any further however, in actual, they do not become aware of the ideas they have. Therefore, in order to unearth the possibility of further delving in presenting profound perspectives, authors employ metacommentary so that all the dynamics of a subject can be explored.

Post 2

Graff and Birkenstein outline metacommentary as one thing of a supplemental text that goes in conjunction with the central statements that contends the argument at hand. I realize the foremost useful line that explains metacommentary as follows Think of metacommentary as a kind of second text that stands aboard your main text and explains what it means that. within the main text you say something within the meta-text you guide your readers in deciphering and processing what youve aforesaid. Such will build or break associate argument per the authors, as metacommentary will produce even additional clarity to any preconceived notions or misconceptions that will have an effect on the delivery of the stance delineate, even within the cases of writing that already impactful. Its more elaboration and steering for readers to choose within the direction the text is informing towards. Ive never heard of the word thus far, however I will use meta-commentary to the fullest to essentially supplement my writing. Graff and Birkenstein additionally speak of however meta-commentary will aid within the case of running out of things to write down concerning, a difficulty I struggle with myself. They state that another reason to master the art of meta-commentary is that itll assist you develop your ideas and generate additional text, and endure to mention that meta-commentary will assist you add each length and depth to your writing. I realize that therefore unbelievably useful and maybe the solution i used to be searching for. it should be a small amount to a fault self-critical, however I actually do feel that my writing will lack depth. this might be the missing piece I required.

Chapter ten They Say. They Say-I Say The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, W.W. Norton Company, 2018

Response

Hi,

I am absolutely agreed with your elucidation of the metacommentary. Metacommentary proffers both depth and length to the text, and these both factors are utterly indispensable when you are writing something meaningful for a wide array of audiences. Without adequately placed signboards, mostly, people get lost on roads, and the same thing happens in reading. Without smartly infused metacommentary, a writer cannot exert his full endeavors to relay the message behind his writing, and in such unfortunate scenarios, the writing will become just a futile and absurd medium. Metacommentary also adds a sense of animation to the text and compels readers to stay on the same page as the writer otherwise self assuming considerations and conclusions sometimes may cause a literary hullaballoo.

Part A

Survival techniques are very essential to cope up with any distressing situations in real life or on a vacation (Khamsi, 2005). The video “How to Escape Quicksand” facilitates viewers in learning various survival techniques that may help an individual if he or she gets stuck in the quicksand. The video also highlighted the composition of quicksand and how the viscosity of quicksand is enhanced when it is distributed after a certain pressure is applied to it. The information presented in a video was very well organized and the demonstration of the technique by using animated characters further helped in learning how to apply the quicksand escaping technique in real life.

Part B

Since my childhood, mac and cheese has been my favorite dish. I not only love to eat the dish but also love cooking it as well. It is very easy to cook Mac and cheese. The first step is to gather all the ingredients. As the name suggests, to make mac and cheese, the most important ingredient is pasta of any shape. I prefer elbow-shaped macaroni as it is easy to boil and takes less time to cook as compared to other pasta types. The second important ingredient is cheese. I like to use parmesan and mozzarella cheese. Also sometimes, I use American cheese as well. The other ingredients include fresh cream, milk, spices, salt, and onions. Bacon or vegetables are optional and depends upon an individual’s choice.

To start cooking, take a pan filled with enough water so that pasta can be boiled. Put the pot filled with pasta and water on the stove on light heat to boil. Then take a separate bowl and pour half a cup of milk and flour in it. After that, whisk the mixture until no visible lumps are seen. Then on a second stove, put a pan and fill it with milk and let it boil for some time. After the milk gets warm, pour the whisked mixture in it and start whisking again. Now turn the heat to low and start adding a handful of cheese. Stir until all the cheese is melted. Now add spices and any boiled vegetable or bacon, etc. Then remove the pan from the heat put the pasta into the mixture. Mix it well and serve the yummy and cheesy pasta to your guests.

Week 2 Discussion

The author Mary Mebane’s story was about a conflict between a black and a white man. She introduced a story by relating the incident with the segregation era. She further explained the fear and discrimination that people used to face ion the era of segregation just because of their color. Moreover, she highlighted that even law enforcement officials were discriminating against people based on their color. For instance, she states, “Physical terror was around the form of policemen and jails” clearly explained the psychological terror that people in that era used to face just because they are black and no laws were made to protect the rights of black people. The introductory paragraphs trigger readers to ponder about the feelings and conditions of people during the transition from being isolated and discriminated against to the enactment of the Civil Rights Act. In the second paragraph, she captured the feelings of fear and anxiety that every black person faced while accessing any public transports during segregation. This facilitates her in connecting to the audience emotionally (Mebane, 2018).

Last Sunday I also took a ride via bus to go to my nana’s house. Although she lives a couple of blocks away o wanted to experience public transport as well. When I entered the bus there were few reserved seats for elders and sick people while the other seats were filled with passengers regardless of their color and social status. This fascinated me a lot and I was feeling proud that I am a citizen of a country that promotes diversity. White people were sitting with black people and even a few immigrants were also on the bus. No one was fighting over a seat and even many people got up from their seats so that sick people can sit on their seats. The ride was fun as people were talking with each other regarding their jobs, educations, and families, etc. Overall my experience on the bus was very good and I will try to use this means of transport more.
