Week 2 Discussion
The author Mary Mebane’s story was about a conflict between a black and a white man. She introduced a story by relating the incident with the segregation era. She further explained the fear and discrimination that people used to face ion the era of segregation just because of their color. Moreover, she highlighted that even law enforcement officials were discriminating against people based on their color. For instance, she states, “Physical terror was around the form of policemen and jails” clearly explained the psychological terror that people in that era used to face just because they are black and no laws were made to protect the rights of black people. The introductory paragraphs trigger readers to ponder about the feelings and conditions of people during the transition from being isolated and discriminated against to the enactment of the Civil Rights Act. In the second paragraph, she captured the feelings of fear and anxiety that every black person faced while accessing any public transports during segregation. This facilitates her in connecting to the audience emotionally (Mebane, 2018).
Last Sunday I also took a ride via bus to go to my nana’s house. Although she lives a couple of blocks away o wanted to experience public transport as well. When I entered the bus there were few reserved seats for elders and sick people while the other seats were filled with passengers regardless of their color and social status. This fascinated me a lot and I was feeling proud that I am a citizen of a country that promotes diversity. White people were sitting with black people and even a few immigrants were also on the bus. No one was fighting over a seat and even many people got up from their seats so that sick people can sit on their seats. The ride was fun as people were talking with each other regarding their jobs, educations, and families, etc. Overall my experience on the bus was very good and I will try to use this means of transport more.
