According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein in chapter 10 of They Say/I Say, metacommentary is defined as a way of communicating on your claims and telling others how- and how not- to think about them. Graff and Birkenstein say to think of metacommentary as a sort of second text that stands along your main text and explains what it means. Basically, what they are saying is that metacommentary can help the reader or audience better understand the meaning behind what you, as the writer or speaker, is trying to convey. The function in academic writing is to help clarify and elaborate so that the audience can establish a deep understanding of what exactly the author is saying. The deeper the understanding of a text, the more incline the reader is going to be to establish an emotional connection to what the author is saying. I am going to utilize metacommentary in my Research Position Paper draft to help demonstrate my goals with the paper in the introduction, and then also to help elaborate on my argument. By helping elaborate on my argument, I am going to present my passion towards my subject in hopes of my audience becoming just as passionate as I am, or at least just more educated on the subject.
