Summary of an Article

America Loses Her Thick Skin

The writer of this article talks about her experience during his experiences at the University of Virginia and how that relates to more or less the usual situations that are faced by the average American in these current times CITATION Cas19 \l 1033 (Casey Chalk, 2019). The main idea of this article is that the American is not the hooligans that they once were. This idea is expressed in the title of the article by the words "Thick Skin". Now the main question that may come to the reader's mind that how did this happen that the average American does not have a thick skin anymore, and how did the average American happen to develop, to use a rather opposite word, a softer skin.

According to this writer, Casey Chalk, this behavior is developing due to the numerous programs that are designed to crib this behavior from the young. Many institutions run anti-bullying campaigns that have taken the aggression out of most of the students CITATION Smi17 \l 1033 (Smith, 2017). There are even programs that are run by appointed officers whose job is to ensure that the students are tolerant when it comes to their misbehavior regarding gender and racial equality.

Many elders also think that such behavior should be cribbed out of children of this age. Yet, there are still some "Old School" adults that think that such behavior is giving rise to a generation that would not be able to stand the hard tests of time CITATION Sea17 \l 1033 (Sean, 2017). They argue that some measure of thick skin is a requirement to survive in this dark and cold world. To some extent, they are right as well. Only the people with thick skin can command the world and steer it clear of social, economic and political threats, just as the Americans had done on several occasions in the recent past. Suffering is a teacher that can help us to notice troubling time, gain the ability to absorb the pressure and retaliate to save ourselves and our loved ones.

Assignment and Discussion

With the recent influx of the superhero films, one complains that audience has with these films is that they do not have deep philosophical undertones during the course of their movies and instead the CGI induced fights are all that matter. One exception to this rule is the “The Dark Knight” which is a super hero movie that has transcended that boundary. It is considered as one of the greatest movies of all time and despite the fact that it is now more than a decade that film had released, some of the themes that are discussed in the movie are still relevant today.

The ethos of the movie are setup in a very different manner as with the passage of time it is being showed that how in a modern society, a social justice or the vigilantism that Batman tends to bring is something that is not going to bring order in the society, instead it is going to further compound the impending issues that are faced in the society. The twisted fabric of the human nature is also discussed as how at times it takes only one incident to bring a person to the brink.

The pathos of the movies is based on the fact that how people are able to understand the motivations of the players in the movie. Even a psychopath like Joker is making sense on many occasions and audience is not able to sympathize, they are able to relate with him to a certain extent at the given point of time.

At the end of the day, the underlying logic that is being presented is that how at times it is hard to carry out a distinction between a winner or a loser as well as the fact that how sacrifices of self-image are needed to be made at the expense for better future.

In "They Say/I Say," Gerald and Cathy highlight the importance of "naysayers." As "naysayers," works as a refutation of skeptical argument. According to the author adding "naysayer" in the text is a natural but essential move. They work as a counterargument, and it increases a text's credibility or ethos; however, it seems that counterargument may be challenging to reply to, but it represents various opinions. Counter argument or adding Naysayers increases interest for the audience and may allow them to think about different aspects of one topic. For example, either it is a debate of marijuana legalization or abortion, refutation plays an essential role against the thesis. Naysayers are an integral part of any discussion and critical work. The best thing about naysayers is that it reduces any biased argument by increasing the credibility of work. It allows the reader to think critically and decide logically. For my Annotated bibliography, I am planning to use some refutation against my thesis. It is not easy to find out and add counterarguments contrary to your work, but it is a useful tool for useful pieces of writing. It will be challenging to add refutation and then defend it, but I don't know how I will play with this writing tool.

Thank you for sharing your point of view with us. I agree with you, and I believe it is a handy writing tool to make simple writing exciting and credible. Because one kind of argument or only in favor of arguments loses the interest of the audience. You said, "There is a sense of trust to be had when it comes to creating a dialogue with a naysayer and in doing so, satisfies that sense with the reader and properly validates all the viewpoints involved", and I must say you are absolutely right here it not only validates but also increases the credibility of work

Reply post 2

Thank you for your exciting and informative post. You are right that "[N]o single device more quickly improves a piece of writing than planting a naysayer in the text" means that it's okay to include what other readers might say against you in your argument." This shows that your work is not biased, and you have another point of view that are against your point of view, and you need to defend them as well. Gerald and Cathy provided the best way to reply to refute is not to use objection but showing disagreement with some part of it.

Workplace Diversity

Assignment 1

Introduction:

The concept of workplace diversity has become really popular in the organizational structures, due to globalization in the world. More and more organizations have started to acknowledge the importance of diversity in workplaces. But often the concept of diversity is misunderstood and is confused with meeting the required quotas for employees on the basis of race and gender. It is not just limited to the cultural, racial and gender diversity but also to the acceptability of the disabled population and of the people belonging to the different nationalities and religions in every possible role. Diversity is all about acceptability, respect and teamwork neglecting the differences regarding gender, language, political and religious beliefs, sexual orientation, disability or difference in communication styles. Workplace diversity can help develop a multi-talented workforce with diversified skills that can perform organizational tasks with high-level efficiency optimization and creativity. This paper will further explore the benefits of diversity in developing the multi-task force.

Discussion:

Diversity gives access to the organizations to the greater range of talent, that doesn't belong to any particular frame of mind or culture, but the mind that has a wider view of the world and ethnicity, without any restrictive factors and limiting boundaries. This provides greater insights to the company about their customer approaches and practices to improve their craft, which can target the wider range of audience. The customer base is never restricted by the limiting factors of demographics ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"xE5eZFuR","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}Searching for Common Threads: Understanding the Multiple Effects of Diversity in Organizational Groups | Academy of Management Review,\\uc0\\u8221{} n.d.)","plainCitation":"(“Searching for Common Threads: Understanding the Multiple Effects of Diversity in Organizational Groups | Academy of Management Review,” n.d.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1671,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/HG4BDQFW"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/HG4BDQFW"],"itemData":{"id":1671,"type":"webpage","title":"Searching for Common Threads: Understanding the Multiple Effects of Diversity in Organizational Groups | Academy of Management Review","URL":"https://journals.aom.org/doi/abs/10.5465/amr.1996.9605060217","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",3,29]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“Searching for Common Threads: Understanding the Multiple Effects of Diversity in Organizational Groups | Academy of Management Review,” n.d.). Thus for targeting the wider range of audience that belongs to various nationalities, languages, and mindsets, employees belonging to the different cultural backgrounds play an important role in policy formation that targets the diverse customer base. Lack of diversity results in closed limited opinions and policies that fail to tackle the diverse needs of the clients and customers CITATION Mar10 \l 1033 (Marc Bendick, (2010)).

By looking across a variety of actual work settings, the analysis sheds light on the cultural underpinnings and structural contexts in which discriminatory actions occur. But not all researches support this claim that diversity and performances are linked. Some think that different types of diversities impact the performances differently in an organization. Different organizations train their employees through providing them expert trainings regarding diversity, so that employees from diverse backgrounds can come together and work together for progress of the organization. Such organizations encourage their employees to value different types of physical, cultural, religious and interpersonal differences to that it increases understanding with other that eventually translates into enhanced decision making, creativity and problem solving. Another focus of these trainings is to change the attitude of employees and eliminate the behaviors of discrimination and exclusion, which often results in increased communication between the employees from diverse backgrounds but these techniques and workshops not always give the desired positive results, and their influence and outcome vary from organization to organization.

There are three important aspects of diversity that are considered by the organizations that makes them consider the implantation of diversity. The companies that are not flexible in terms of their employee hiring, they can easily face the shortage of talent in the organization, which can affect the performance of an organization. Thus now a days organizations are becoming more open to the hiring of employees with diverse skill and diverse backgrounds. Customer understanding the second most important point. In order to understand the requirements of the customers and communicate with them, it is essential for organizations to hire people from diverse backgrounds so that the concerns of the customers can be addressed. Third important factor is again ambiguous, that is team performance. The belief that diversity will increase the performance and the outcomes, is the main factor due to which employers promote diversity. First two points are valid and logical, but the verification of third point cannot be validated in all organizations.

According to study that examined diversity in terms of ethnicity and gender and its impact on the work performance, suggested that this general belief that Diversity in terms of culture, demographic, gender, technical skills, and cognition is when subjected to groups by eliminating their conflicts, increasing communication and information, results in performance, satisfaction and huge turnovers is not always true. In fact gender diversity promotes healthy work competition in work place results in increased group performance while racial and ethnic diversity inhibited them. Sometimes in organizations the negative effects of the diversity also come into play but these effects can be minimized through the coaching and trainings by the HR of the organizations. Diversity improves performance when employees work in group than in the individual settings ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"UOVVclfw","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Kochan et al., 2003)","plainCitation":"(Kochan et al., 2003)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1897,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/XZDT2PBK"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/XZDT2PBK"],"itemData":{"id":1897,"type":"article-journal","title":"The effects of diversity on business performance: Report of the diversity research network","container-title":"Human Resource Management","page":"3-21","volume":"42","issue":"1","source":"Wiley Online Library","abstract":"This article summarizes the results and conclusions reached in studies of the relationships between race and gender diversity and business performance carried out in four large firms by a research consortium known as the Diversity Research Network. Conclusion:

Building a diverse environment in the organization is a challenging task. Often employers don’t implement the concept of diversity while implementing the diversity policies. For example goal of diversity is not to just apparently show the clients that company implements the diversity policies and has diverse representation, but the goal should be to give every one equal chance to grow so that they prove to be a beneficial asset to a company. As diversity increases the company’s potential to grow with multi-talented force, but it can only happen if diversity policies are applied right. Also the positive effects of the diversity in terms of increased performance and productivity don’t come into play in all organizations equally. Workshops to train the employees to value diversity are helpful in generating positive outcomes. Diversity can generate better outcomes when employees work in group then in individual settings.

Dangers of the excessive use of digital devices

Introduction

A physical piece of an appliance which contains a microcontroller is called as digital devices. Numerous devices are digital such as a smartphone, tablet and smart watch, microphone External Hard Drive, Internal Hard Drive, Memory Cards, printer, Flash Drive. Contrastingly, some analog devices are a thermometer, electric fan, and bicycle.

In this digital era, people are used to of appliance as mentioned earlier which of course has positive and negative effects .here in this essay I am going to highlight negative aspects of digital technology. Factually, excessive use of smart phone distracts mind of students as well as other people, i.e., working class. Moreover, it effects on health; it is caused by backache in many young and old people. Furthermore, one of the primary reasons for stress, anxiety, and depression is the unbridled use of a phone.

Thesis statement

Unbridled use of digital technology badly effects human life.

Explanation

By surveys and observation, it is noted that use of smart phone slows the process of work of all sphere of life, for instance in business in education, in the field of science and arts.

Employees who use their mobile phones during their working hours, distract their mind thus they do not focus on their work well, diversion of this intention could destroy the company or bring it on the edge of destruction. So, by the passage of time, some private companies, an organization as well as government sectors realize that use of phone should be minimized or outlaw during working hours. In different countries, the use of the telephone by teachers in school time is disallowed. For instance, in Pakistan teachers are not allowed to make any call or receive in classrooms.it off course distracts the mind of teacher similarly the account of students. “in book of sleeping with your smart phone, Harvard business school professor Leslie Perlow recounts an experiment at a Boston consulting group in which each member of a six-person group took turned disconnecting at 6 p .m .until next morning –some time against their will. This "predictable time led to a more collaborative and effective team, the experiment. Volkswagen for some of its employees 30 minutes after their shift end and start them again 30 minutes before their next shift.” In addition to,” Ottawa-based Janice McDonald, co-founder of iStyleOriginals.com and mymusic.ca, took an unintentional digital break when her BlackBerry took a spin in the washing machine on a recent holiday."After the initial panic and withdrawal, I learned that there are far fewer urgent e-mails that need to be answered immediately. Most can wait for a more convenient time that suits my schedule," she said. The impact of that unexpected break proved beneficial for her business life; Ms. McDonald said she no longer treats her BlackBerry as another person at meetings and e-mail no longer drives her day, allowing her more time for strategic thinking. “

.In addition to, uncontrolled use of smart phone germ stress, anxiety, and depression.many research show the same .a research which is I am going to mention here says,

“Research from 2012 has found that the need to immediately read and respond to every one of these incoming alerts is causing rising stress levels”.

Moreover, spending most of the time of day cause depression. “A study from Northwestern University revealed that the more time people spend on their phones, the more likely they are to be depressed. The average daily use for a depressed person was 68 minutes, compared to just 17 minutes for someone who has better mental health” in addition to ,excessive use of phone losses your patient, cause of headache and brain disorders.it also disturb sleeping time, spending a lot of time with phone reduce your bond with your family and friends.” Three years ago, when the Welland, Ont., native learned that her family's nickname for her was "BlackBerry mama," she decided to take a two-month, technology-free trip across Asia with her daughter. Four days into the trip, both of them had rediscovered how to be fully alert and attuned to their experience, likening it to donning a giant "do not disturb" sign.”

Conclusion.

From the paragraphs mentioned above, we can conclude that excessive use of digital technology effects on human life. Inevitably it also effects on people s work .similarly it disturbs the state of mind, generates depression, anxiety, stress. Moreover, it destroys family relations.

Question 1:

For revising and editing my paper, I need to explore all the dimensions of the essay topic, Diversity at the workplace. I will start by noting down all the points that I already have mentioned in the essay. Then I will brainstorm for more ideas and other aspects of the already stated points in the essay. Narrowing down the topic is essential for the well-constructed essay. I will add the important details regarding the already mentioned points in the essay and take out the less important points in the essay. For example, I will further explore the link between the increasing customer base and diversity and add examples. Similarly, I will add examples regarding the racial discrimination and stats relevant to it.

Time management is essential to a well-drafted essay. Before writing I will plan all the paragraphs for the essay and write down all the points that I need to add and subtract from the first draft. Then I will map all the points in the essay. Time spent on planning will ensure that I write my essay on time. It will give me time to revise it, which is essential for quality paper.

Question 2:

Providing feedback to the classmate's post was an interesting and challenging task. I enjoyed reading their posts as it gave me the opportunity to understand the different viewpoints regarding the different topics. Reading the ideas of the others opened my eyes to the possibility of different views regarding a similar topic. I feel providing feedback to other's post has helped me to take into account the different ways of writing the opinions and point of views. The biggest challenge that I faced was performing my own research regarding the materials presented in the posts so that I can give my true feedback on the posts. I realized that in my essays I use a similar type of linking verbs while reading the posts of the others. If I peer-review the posts, I will spend less time in collecting material about the unfamiliar terms in the research and focus more on my personal opinions on the posts, as reviewing is based more on the personal opinions then on the information.

Question 3:

The topic for my paper was workplace diversity which is important in all sorts of organizations. Thus it can be presented to the any organization's heads i.e. college head, school heads, private and governmental organizations, etc. so that they can understand the importance of diversity and implement it in their organizations. Implementing the key points of the assignment will increase the productivity of their employees and help them build a multi-talented workforce for their organization.

I think this topic can be easily converted into an effective presentation. For presenting the research succinctly, I will make bullet points regarding each dimension of the topic and present similar ideas under one heading and exclude the less important points. It is essential to decide which points are important and which are least important. For this reason, I will pick the key points by taking into account the impact of each point of the organization, society and work efficiency. Diversity has many dimensions and it is essential to explore those dimensions in depth. The presentation should always contain the bullet points, so I will add only the main key points in the presentation and leave the long examples. The other points relevant to key points will be explained orally while presenting the presentation.

American Colonial Society

Assignment 1

Background: Pilgrims and Puritans

American history has many complex realities, which are very interesting. The migration of people to America from England is an important part of history. The migrated people brought their religious beliefs with them and these religious ideals are clearly shown in the Colonial American literature writings. Religion had a strong bond to the early American life and it had a strong effect on all aspects of the lives of people. The history of colonial times is expressed in the colonial literature. It tells the rules of the pilgrims and Puritans to live life and the punishments were decided upon violation of those rules.

Two different groups of settlers, which came to America, were the Pilgrims and the Puritans. These two groups had problems with the Church of England. The puritans wanted to refine the church while the Pilgrims wanted to isolate it. The pilgrims were the Separatists who left England upon disagreeing with King James’s religious ideas and interpretation of Bible teachings. In 1620, the pilgrims arrived in America. With a yearning to spend life in a society free of the holy persecution and united by strong religious beliefs, they would have suffered in England for their beliefs. The puritans were a large group that came to settle in America, ten years after the pilgrims reached America. This group landed in the Massachusetts Bay colony.

William Bradford: Of Plymouth Plantation

Born in England, William Bradford joined the Separatists community and traveled to the New World. At first, these people were known as "Old Comers," but after the manuscript by Bradford was discovered, in which he had called the people who left Holland "saints" and "pilgrims," the term Pilgrims was coined and the Separatists came to be known as the Pilgrims.

William Bradford in ‘Of Plymouth Plantation’ tells about the experience of the Pilgrims in the New World and their early colonial life in America. Bradford writes about God’s Providence by offering the example of the sailor who mistreated the pilgrims and was punished through illness or even death. Bradford states:

There was a proud and very profane young man, one of the seamen, of a lusty, able body, which made him the more haughty; he would always be condemning the poor people in their sickness, and cursing them daily with grievous execrations, and did not tell them, that he hoped to help cast half of them overboard before they came to their journey's end, and to make merry with what they had; and if he were by any gently reproved, he would curse and swear most bitterly. But it pleased God before they came half seas over, to smite this young man with a grievous disease, of which he died in a desperate manner…....... CITATION Lev17 \p 142 \l 1033 (Levine, Elliott and Gustafson 142)

William Bradford presents his humility before God by stating that whatever that is done for the will of God are God’s providence.

Mary Rowlandson: A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration

Mary Rowlandson was a respectable puritan who, in her narrative, has conveyed an understanding of her society, and their social relationships to the insights of the Native American's. Her narrative mentions all from her capture to her return. She has written about her relationship to God and the Bible, calling her capture, a trial from God that she has to withstand with faith. There are continual references mentioned in the narrative that depicts God's will in her capture.

“Yet the Lord still showed mercy to me, and helped me; and as he wounded me with one hand, so he healed me with the other”. CITATION vola \p 273 \l 1033 (R. S. Levine 273)

When she was wounded, she had a strong belief in God’s will. She calls the misery a condition arranged by God.

“There I left that Child in the Wilderness, and must commit it, and myself also in this Wilderness-condition, to him who is above all.” CITATION vola \p 274 \l 1033 (R. S. Levine 274)

On the death of her sick daughter, she grieved for her but she also states that God has put the child out of suffering and misery.

Assignment 2

Letters from an American Farmer: Interesting details

Crevecoeur, in his letter III, Letters from an American Farmer examines the American Identity. The right to freedom and liberty is very dear to every individual. The depiction of America as an ideal society for people with no religious intolerance, disciplined and hardworking people, and no aristocratic class is the most interesting thing about this letter and the way he describes the people from different nations. The description of the perfect nature of this New World helps distinguish America from Europe and to be a much better place. James, the farmer states, “The rich and the poor are not so far removed from each other as they are in Europe.” CITATION vola \p 636 \l 1033 (R. S. Levine 636) James is a generous and simple character who looks at the cultural differences between the American model of the civilization and that of the European nation-state.

“Here, individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men,”CITATION vola \p 638 \l 1033 (R. S. Levine 638)

He views the Scottish as violent and nasty, the Germans as the most industrious, and the Irish as the least industrious as they love to drink and quarrel.

Autobiography of Thomas Jefferson: Interesting details

Thomas Jefferson's autobiography is an interesting piece of writing. Jefferson has mentioned very little about his personal life. The most interesting thing in his autobiography is his support to justice and equality. He highlighted the importance of history and politics to increase our knowledge of the world around us. Jefferson insisted on representing the notion of equality but his interests and his social position were in contrast to the notion. The described events and writing about the slave system in his autobiography are the center of attention for the readers. The "Notes on the State of Virginia'' by Jefferson is also worth the attention and focus. The interesting thing about this book are the themes that are "individual liberty," "constitutional government," and the "separation of church and the state." He writes about his belief that the blacks and the whites could not live together.

Background Reading

The American dream was always seen highlighted in the works of the colonial American writers and poets. The "Letters from an American Farmer" makes me wonder how the American society had struggled to become a perfect civilization and how the melting of different nations and identities create a new world. I wonder what kind of a world it would have been. The autobiography of Thomas Jefferson makes me wonder how racism and implementation of equality and justice in the society would have worked in the society. Both pieces of writing make me remind of the speech "I Have a Dream" by Martin Luther King Jr. about the American dream and identity. The background reading helped in understanding the viewpoints of the writers about the issues in the society, which they highlighted.

According to Roberson, (2019), diversity is considered as a competitive advantage , which includes cultures, styles, skills, education, and ways of seeing the world. This becomes an opportunity for those recent graduates who seek to increase their professional development and find flexible work environments. Diversity in an organization is about creating an organizational culture strong enough to understand differences of any kind , with programs that ensure the well-being of employees, and where there is an environment in which communication is open and effective.

In the article entitled, “Diversity Management: Invisible Identities. In Diversity and Identity in the Workplace” the author explains the concept of diversity in detail. This article explains that oeople from diverse cultures can offer a selection of different talents, skills and experiences, which can be of benefit to the organization and their performance at work. Although some crossover skills may be beneficial when it comes to helping others, it is important to hire people with the necessary skills to adapt to each of the functions within the company. A variety of skills and experiences among the team also means that employees can learn from each other.

Bamel, U. K., Paul, H., & Bamel, N. (2018). Managing workplace diversity through organizational climate. In Flexibility in Resource Management (pp. 87-97). Springer, Singapore.

Bamel, U. K., Paul, H., & Bamel, N. (2018) in their article explains the managing of diversity. Diversity in the workplace not only refers to differences between employees, but also to their acceptance at work. The diversity training is a part essential to raise awareness and environment cohesive work. Diversity training in the workplace is an investment in employees, and therefore, in the company. Cultural awareness acts as a bridge between employees, endowing them with cultural sensitivity in religion, ethnicity, sex, background, sexual orientation, disabilities and age.

The training benefits the company by allowing employees to build healthy working relationships, as well as reducing harassment and discrimination at work, acting as a resource to unite, among others, groups of different sex. The training acts to turn satisfied employees into passionate employees, comfortable in the workplace, reducing pressures not related to it. At the same time, the quality of the work done by the employees improves. It produces a happier staff, increasing productivity. The source is relevant, as it tends to focus on an aspect of the workplace and workforce diversity. This article is credible as it is reviewed by scholars.

Bursell, M., & Jansson, F. (2018). Diversity preferences among employees and ethnoracial workplace segregation. Social science research, 74, 62-76..

In the article entitled, “Diversity preferences among employees and ethnoracial workplace segregation” explains that employees are more likely to feel comfortable and happy in an environment where inclusion is a priority. Equality in the workplace is important to encourage workers of all backgrounds to feel confident in their abilities to achieve the best possible. The higher the morale of the team, the more productive employees are. diversity in the workplace is often met with resistance from certain groups of employees. For diversity to thrive, the management team must be able to detect such resistance and put an end to it. The resistances can also be presented in different ways and obey different behaviors.

This is relevant to my research paper as it explains that diversity can manifest themselves thinking that certain benefits are granted to certain people, regardless of their work, or that promotions are made to meet a certain quota. Some employees are frustrated by the requirement to be politically correct and, although they participate in diversity training, they feel cautious in relation to the process and are probably even against it, decreasing the chances of success throughout the team .

In the article entitled, “Managing diversity” by Barak explains that the diversity management policy recognizes that workers differ from each other, and these differences, if managed correctly, will contribute to a more qualified and efficient performance of work. This policy does not focus exclusively on discrimination, on the contrary, it focuses on understanding the differences between people. This source is reliable, as the article is published in a reputed research and academic journal, i.e., Saga publication. Managing diversity is a concept that recognizes the benefits of differences. It differs from the equality of opportunity policy, which aims to create barriers to discrimination.

Assignment

Workplace diversity can help develop a multi-talented workforce with diversified skills that can perform organizational tasks with high level efficiency, optimization and creativity.

Diversity at the workplace is the most important aspect of the organization. As economic growth and demographic growth in the US region grows, organizations increasingly think about whether their workforce reflects the diversity of the society they serve. As stakeholders in the health sector, we must be able to work with regard to the huge range of languages, religions, customs, traditions, worldviews and values, especially as more and more patients in our region actively make decisions regarding their health. Versatile thinking and unusual thinking inspire many-sided discussions and originality, which helps change fresh thoughts into eloquent inventions (Triandis, et.al.1994). This philosophy permits us to investigate and impartially explore new solutions to meet unmet health needs. Workplace diversity can help develop a multi-talented workforce with diversified skills that can perform organizational tasks with high level efficiency, optimization and creativity.

When it talks to cultural changes in the workplace, we are no longer discussing why we need such changes, but talking about how we can effectively use this variety in order to reach our full possible, changing the lives of patients (Cunningham, 2019). There is no longer any doubt that cultural differences stimulate innovation and improve the practical performance of companies. Numerous studies have confirmed that the results of companies that incorporate cultural diversity and inclusion in their activities are superior to those of competitors.

Technology: the myth that older workers are not likely to learn to use new technologies is wrong! Seasoned workers like to learn and are open to training and using technology (Thomas, 2005). Loyalty: Seasoned workers seem more dedicated and want to work for a company, which is a plus for customers who like to establish a relationship with a consultant they can rely on for years. Effectiveness and credibility: In terms of efficiency, three-quarters of the pharmacists-managers aged over 60 hired as assistant were still employed five years later. As well, many employers find that experienced workers help them build relationships with older clients by sharing their work history (Pugh, et.al. 2008).

The acceptance and tolerance among employees produces a greater effectiveness in productivity because it results in a greater impetus to perform daily tasks and thus have a healthy work environment, in which employees in the areas in which it is practiced diversity or throughout the company, feel comfortable and eager to work, because several times the staff that feels rejected or to some extent discriminated, attends their work with little desire to work with little character and little joy and that gives, as a consequence, poor job performance. In US culture, achieving a balance between different parts of a group is much more important than recognizing the uniqueness of the individual.

To some extent, this idea is due to the teachings of Confucius on the achievement of harmony in terms of diversity. Given this, diversity can create adverse conditions and even destabilization in a region that seeks harmony. Full acceptance of diversity means that sometimes we will not be able to make decisions quickly enough, and we may have to force ourselves to adjust as we change our working methods (Konrad, 2003). The harmonization of diversity means providing an opportunity for healthy dissent and curiosity to prevail in the search for new ideas. For those of us who grew up in a more homogeneous environment, it is especially important to allow a constructive conflict that can lead to a discussion. People should feel that they can freely and without fear of condemnation express different points of view in a circle of people respecting each other. At that moment, when someone's atypical idea or unconventional way causes an awkward silence, we need to stop, listen and delve into this opportunity.

To conclude, diversity at the workplace is the most important aspect of the organization. In the similar means that it can be claimed that increasing diversity is helpful for society, organizations have also derived to the conclusion that diversity is good business exercise. Finally, by practicing an inclusive recruitment strategy, a businessman has a workforce that truly reflects the world outside the company and, at the same time, the profile of customers.

Is Social Networking Good for Our Society?

Outline

Introduction

Defining Social networking

Social networking can be defined as the use of websites such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn among other online platforms with the aim of promoting communication among other uses. Social network has been viewed by many people to be of great importance to the society as people across the globe are able to connect, share ideas and become friends all thanks to these social media platforms.

Thesis Statement: Some people in the society argue that the threat of online network does outweigh the advantages and as seen in this discussion, this is clearly not the case as it is the other way around.

Body

Helps society communicate and remain in contact

Social networking sites have been known to allow people communicate and still remain in contact with their friends. It also becomes easier to meet new people and make new friends, with the help of these sites, the society gets an opportunity to look for people with similar interests with whom they can establish a relationship with and known each other more. Moreover, groups can be created and joined to meet people who have similar views and opinions. (Subrahmanyam, 2008)

Helps student discuss educational topics

Not only is social networking used to talk to friends but also can also be used to discuss educational topics. Rennie (2013) argue that social networking does increase an individual’s quality of life and helps reduce health risks. Imagine a society where every individual whose risk of acquiring disease is reduced and the quality of life increased can be productive. For a society to be productive it requires individuals who are on their right mind and healthy and this can be achieved through social networking.

Businesses are able to share information using social media platforms

People are becoming more acquainted with modern means of communication thereby disregarding more antique methods such as the telephone. In any case, the phone is an essential part of the communication process and must therefore be present regardless of how much the situation is archaic. That said, it is possible to create a united communication system by integrating the social media to the call center so as to provide seamless customer service (Tapscott, 2009)

Conclusion

Just like anything else, social networking does has its own share of advantages and disadvantages though the benefits surpass the disadvantages as seen in the discussion above. As time passes, these sites continue advancing and changing with the aim of fixing any negative problems.

Q 1. Stealing and getting someone’s ideas, language, expressions or thoughts published by representing them as own original work is called Plagiarism (Pecorari, & Petrić, 2014). Plagiarism is a serious act of dishonesty and considered a grave sin in academic terms (Angélil-Carter, 2014). Journalists consider it a severe breach of journalistic code of ethics.

Q 2. Intentional Plagiarism or intentional cheating refers to deliberately take someone else’s ideas, expression, thoughts, words or even language to present them as your own work, whereas unintentional plagiarism means to use someone ideas or thoughts in your work but forgetting to give the creator their due credit (Helgesson, & Eriksson, 2015).

Q 3. In this case, the student has committed plagiarism as he has used the quotation marks but not mentioned the citation. Although, it looks like the student has not done it intentionally so that it can be considered as a case of unintentional plagiarism.

Q 4. In this case, the student has apparently borrowed the idea from the other author and but has used it as a reference only, stating it as her original work. Although she has cited the work, it has been presented as her own original work because she has changed multiple terms and used synonyms instead. So, it would be regarded as plagiarism.

Q 5. This case is not plagiarism. Although the student has made use of material that had mostly been created by someone else, he has given proper credit to the original writer by using quotation marks and citations, so it would not be regarded as plagiarism.

Q 7. There are multiple ways to avoid plagiarism in your work and produce original plagiarism free content (Gunnarsson, J et al., 2014). Some of these ways are listed below:

Initially, understand what exactly plagiarism is.

Try to write more and more content in your own words.

While referencing any past work, use the techniques of paraphrasing.

Practice more and more.

Romantic Era

The Romantic Era starts from 1760, and it ends by 1850s (Murray, p.20). However, it has left a significant impact on the literature and as well as on society. The effects of Romantic-era can also be seen in the current literature. The Romanticism period brought a new way of looking at the world. It focused individualism by appealing to the emotional reactions. All the themes, literary styles, and genres of this era were new. It diverted the attention of people from the harsh realities of the world and took them to an ideal world. As a result, people also changed their way of thinking and directed toward enlightenment.

Three of the very famous poets of this era; Shelley, Byron, and Keats gave a new direction to the world. They were talking about freedom and peace instead of discussing the wars and destruction. As Shelly was more interested in political matters of the country, it is seen that he mainly addressed power. At the same time, he did not ignore the injustices of society due to the misuse of power. He was a poet and activist at the same time who spoke about the injustices and inequalities of the society (Shelley and Rogers, p.10).

On the other side, Keats was comparing the real world with an ideal and imaginary world. His poems reflect that he was disappointed by the real world such as “The Eve of St. Agnes” has marked it. He also talked about politics in his poems and criticized the society regarding the monarch practices (Dickstein, pg. 175-181). Moreover, he also contributed by give a dimension to the society by portraying the weaknesses of society.

Unlike Keats, Byron talked about the reality, and he did not imagine anything. He discussed the reality as it is regardless of being a romantic poet. Many of his poems depict his personal life. However, he also raised his voice against oppression in the western world. At the same time, he highlighted the importance of human freedom in society. He challenged the culture practices persecution but showed love for classical culture.

But it is not just limited to the cultural, racial and gender diversity but also to the acceptability of the disabled population and of the people belonging to the different nationalities and religions in every possible role.

Conclusion:

Building a diverse environment in the organization is a challenging task. Often employers' lose the essences of diversity while implementing the diversity policies.

Assignment 2:

The biggest challenge that I faced while working on the draft was finding the reliable scholarly resources that specifically align with my thesis statement. Also, the resources in the college library were not enough to cater to the content requirements of the assignments. For this purpose, I explored the online resources for the topic and used them and secondary research material. But going through different scholarly papers and online articles, helped me in choosing that dimension for my topic.

I had a hard time, exploring the various s dimensions ofthe workplace diversity. As my initial opinions about the topic were limited. In my old opinion diversity was only based on nationality and religion. This limitation made it difficult for me to explore the online resources. My instructor proved to be helpful in opening my mind regarding the various dimensions of diversity. He helped me understand the broader aspect of diversity and its purpose in the workplace environment with different examples. I used that guideline to perform research on the dimensions of diversity.

The questions that I have for my instructor are :

Have you ever felt that people particularly women of color are discriminated at workplaces, even in this time?

Have you ever experienced any issue in less diverse work environment regarding the acceptability?

As an instructor, you deal with students with diverse backgrounds, what are the challenges that you have faced while dealing with the students from diverse backgrounds, in terms of language, cultural and religious barriers?

Blood Meridian

Cormac McCarthy’s novel ‘Blood Meridian’ conveys the themes of violence and darker reality of the west by portraying the nameless boy who escapes from home at the age of fourteen. The fiction provides a re-enactment of history that expresses the tragedy of the people of the west. The kid after leaving his home reaches Texas where he meets the judge who sets the life course for his future years. the kid plays the role of a protagonist who is thin, pale and wears ragged clothing. His encounter with Judge Holden allows him to see the darker side of the world. The judge, on the other hand, believes that the strong must survive but the weak must be killed without mercy. The tragedy of the kid becomes more discernible when at the end of the story the judge attempts to kill him. the character of the judge represents the powerful Americans who believe that there is no place for kindness or remorse.

The complex terms used by McCarthy in the fiction include bondage, wounded medusa, abrogate, abutment, acolyte and adduce. To understand the terms I searched the meanings of the terms in the dictionary. Bondage means a state of slavery and wounded medusa symbolized a monster of snakes. Abrogate means revoking formally, abutment means the provision of masonry support. Acolyte states provision of assistance to persist minister and adduce means evidence in advance.

The novel transmits the history of massive brutality encountered by the people of the west in America. The character of the kid is established to criticize the injustices and violence that deteriorated the lives of many young Americans. it also explains that humans unwittingly reinforced violence that undermined the concepts of freedom and kindness. The people of the west continued to serve as bondage for the powerful Americans.

Investigating on SI Teachable dynamic calibration of instrumented charpy strikers – Activities performed at NIST in FY2019

In recent years, at NIST investigations have been conducted towards an SI-traceable dynamic calibration of instrumented charpy strikers. Though, these tests last only for a few milliseconds, pointing towards the phenomenon. Different approaches have been considered for dynamic calibration that includes methods which were implemented in NIST previously and these methods have become common due to their use as standard. One of the key purposes of investigations is that calibration could be traceable to international systems of units (Vlajic & Chijioke, 2016). Accomplishments and activities of this project are given in detail in the Technical Note, during FY2019. A Summary of processes and activities conducted has been mentioned in the NIST, TN that was issued in May 2018 under the title “Investigation on SI-Traceable Dynamic Calibration of instrumented Charpy Stickers. Second aim that has been presented in this article is assuring the optimization of the design of the instrumented Charpy Stickers. In this paper author claims, “Design Considerations to Optimize Charpy Instrumented Strikers”

Facebook improve political Ad transparency but refuses ban

In this article, new capabilities of Facebook and criticism on them have been highlighted. Increasing number of the political and social ads would be controlled by the social media users as they could remove the ads from the list that are not of their interest. This option has been introduced as most of the political campaigns were using Facebook for targeting the voters are influencing to vote for them, but the social networks refuse such ads to join and were banned as users were against such ads that were in favor of n certain political campaigns (Browne, 2020). Twitter has also banned political ads and Leathern doubled down this refusal and said “Frankly, we believe the soon Facebook and other companies are subject to democratically accountable rules on this the better”. Different negative aspects of online political advertising could also chip away at the legitimacy of election results, particularly in case of micro-targeted ads. According to the rights groups there is a check on the accuracy and rules applied to advertisers so that baseless political agendas without repercussions could be checked upon social media.

Juniper networks releases security updates

Juniper Network has released updates so that it could address multiple vulnerabilities in different Juniper products. There are chances and the affected system could be attacked by remote attacker who may exploit some of the vulnerabilities for taking over the control of the whole system. Juniper Identity Management Service aims to collect and maintain database of the user, group and the device from Active Directory domains. In this article, the author also claims that Juniper obtain identity information so that it could enforce the appropriate policy for securing the confidential information before taking decision to deny or permit access (Juniper Networks Releases Security Updates, 2020). Central purpose of Juniper is to protect corporate internet and resources. It does not deconflict certain notifications and states, “synchronize directory service data”. Juniper protects against certain denial-of-service (DoS) flood attacks which are trigger by SRX Series device due to bursts of the queries linked to the unknown IP addresses.

Privacy-preserving detection of Inter-Domain SDN Rules overlaps

SND approaches to inter-domain routing promise to deliver the best of the services i.e. better traffic engineering, higher automation and enhanced security etc. Though SDN has been introduced in internet field yet there has been mentioned dangers of its use as it allows fine-grained rules which deflect traffic from BGP’s default routes. This negative aspect would lead towards mismatching and results in forwarding black holes and loops etc., ultimately hindering the SDN deployment at inter domain level as safety comes first. This work is about the steps taken for the verification of the correctness of inter-domain so that loop freedom could be focused while considering the SDN rules (Dethise, Chiesa, & Canini, 2017). At the end of this study, a primitive but powerful and simple design has been given that would verify whether there is overlapping of the SDN rules or not. Objective of this experimentation is to introduce advancement in Secure Multi-Party Computation which is then detailed as the building block for designing a system for detecting internet-wide forwarding loops among any of the set of SDN-enabled Internet eXchange Points. “A privacy-preserving primitive to the rescue!”

Interpol reduces cryptojacking infection by 78%

Interpol is celebrating reduction in the numbers of the routers that were infected with cryptomining malware. In this article, details have been given regarding operation Goldfish Alpha which begin in June 2019 after the confirmation of the compromised routers in the ASEAN region blamed for almost 18% of global infection (Muncaster, 2020). Aim of launching this operation was to locate the infected routers along with alerting the victims so that harms could be minimized to its best by patching the devices. All these efforts led to the reduction of the 78% infected routers and police also supported Cyber Defense Institute and Trend Mirco for collecting and analyzing the information. Police also provided necessary guidelines for patching the compromised routers and avoiding the future infections. Craig Jones said, “When faced with emerging cybercrimes like cryptojacking, the importance of strong partnerships between police and cybercrime industry cannot be overstated”. According to this study, hackers may use and manipulate the data as malware infection involves different type of risks. Footprint could also be used in hacking the homes machines by the hackers.

Research Essay: Cesar Chavez

Introduction

Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American labor organizer and a Latino-American civil rights activist from 1927-1993. In 1962, with former experience as a migrant worker, Chavez headed The National Farm Worker Association. His labor union merged with the "Agricultural Worker organizing committee" after the first strike in California against the grape's growers. The two organizations later formed a larger union as 'United farm Workers'. Despite the legal barriers and conflicts with the other unions, he struggled to improve the conditions for farmworkers and labors in California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. The absurd support of Farm Workers Association with the strike of Filipino Farm-workers in the grapes field of Delano was a turning point in Chavez's life. Cesar Chavez was born in 1927 to a Mexican American family in Yuma, Arizona. Chavez was a believer in the narrative of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi that "Violence can only hurt us and our cause" (Cesar Chavez). Cesar Chaves served as director "Community Service Organization" in 1958, but soon, he resigned from the post to devote his struggle in organizing a union for the rights of farmworkers. Cesar was brought in a poor family. He learned a lesson of injustice or rather justice when the dishonest Anglos breached the land agreement with his father and grabbed his land for not paying the heavy interest on a loan. Cesar said that "the love for justice that is in us is not only the best part of our being, but it is also the truest to our nature". In subsequent paragraphs, the essay will describe Chavez's life and way of leadership, his beliefs regarding justice and Nonviolent resistance, and the great impact of Cesar Chaves on the life of American farmworkers.

The Leadership of Cesar Chavez

Chavez was recruited in Navy in the year 1946 and sent to San Diego for training purpose. He stationed in Saipan then moved to Guam as a Seaman. He was promoted to this rank and moved to San Francisco. Chavez certainly decided to leave the Navy and moved to Delano, California, and started working as an agricultural worker. "The boycott is one of the most powerful weapons that poor people and people who struggle for justice have in this world (Wolfteich and Claire, 2005) It's so powerful because it's nothing more than the extension of love from one human being to the other. It makes it possible for people on the east coast and in California and in other places, in Texas, in Austin, and all over the world to help one another in a very direct way" (Zompetti, 2006). Mexican American Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) was a projecting union frontrunner and labor manager.

Toughened by his initial knowledge as a refugee employee, Chavez initiated the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. His union combined with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike contrary to grape cultivators in California, and the two establishments later fused to develop the United Farm Workers. Emphasizing peaceful approaches, Chavez drew courtesy for his reasons via boycotts, hikes, and hunger strikes (Jenson et al., 2003). He always remained peaceful and nonviolent (Zompetti, 2006). His determinations and purposes were destined to get privileges for workers and labors. He united workers and labors through his National Farm Workers Association. There were many fights that he fought for the workers and labors. The fight with the strong legislative and the other unions was not easy. Although struggles with the Teamsters union and legitimate obstructions, he was intelligent enough to protect workers and recover environments for farmhouse labors in California, Texas, Arizona, and Florida.

During this age, Chavez met the environments that he would commit his life to alter: worthless refugee camps, dishonest work suppliers, insufficient wages for exhausting labor, unpleasant discrimination. His overview to work organizing started in 1952 when he chanced Father Donald McDonnell, an innovative Catholic cleric, and Fred Ross, a manager with the Community Service Organization, who employed Chavez to link his assembly. In a few years, Chavez had emerged as a national manager, but in 1962 resigned to dedicate his drives to establishing a union for farm labors. The purpose of the strikes and boycotts were to acknowledge and recognize the dignified status of workers and labors (Zompetti, 2006). It was necessary to create awareness among labors and workers to stand and fight for the rights. He devoted his life to workers and labors passionately. Cesar fasted for many days just for the rights of workers and labors. He fasted for more than 10 days and even for 25 days. He repeated fast in the years 1968, 1972, and 1988. He declared that the fasting is nor propaganda; it is the utmost form of discipline and correction.

Major Achievements and Setbacks

A foremost turning fact originated in September 1965 after the unexperienced Farm Labors Association chosen to link a strike that had been introduced by Filipino farm labors in Delano’s grape grounds (Shaw, 2010). In months, Chavez and his union developed a well-known recognition. Chavez's representation on the descriptions of the civil human rights society, his persistence on peacefulness, his dependence on helpers from urban colleges and spiritual societies, his association with structured labor, and his practice of mass rallying performances such as a well-known walk on Sacramento in 1966 fetched the grape strike and customer reject into the nationwide awareness. The strike in specific was liable for compelling the cultivators to know the United Farm Labors. The initial agreements were contracted in 1966 but were trailed by additional years of conflict. As Shaw (1983) claims, the fight "was even more than a battle for politico-economic power, it was a socio-cultural revolution because it placed emphasis upon social services, land reform, and community development projects" (Zompetti, 2006). In 1968 Chavez lived on a fast for twenty-five days to object the snowballing support of ferocity in the union. Triumph came lastly on July 29, 1970, when 26 Delano cultivators officially contracted agreements recognizing the workers and getting peace to the wineries.

The same year, Teamsters' movement confronted him in the Salinas valley by authorizing sweetheart agreements with the cultivators there. Therefore, started a four-year fight. Lastly, in 1973, the Teamsters contracted a jurisdictional contract that provisionally terminated the conflict (Zompetti, 2006). To improve the efficiency, later 1976 Chavez led through the main reform the union to public outreach. Chavez Initiated a worldwide boycott, in 1984 when the grape industry refuses to use the pesticides on the crops. He initiated the national level strike of table grapes. The purpose of the strike was to get attention towards workers suffering from discrimination. He obstinately devoted himself and his services to the poor and workers. The labors and workers are often neglected in the countries. He was a social worker and devoted his life to worker's rights and dignity in the country. To resolve the problems of American's poorest workers, Chavez insistently devoted his thirty years. His efforts succeeded in raising wages and farmworkers in California, Arizona, Florida, and Texas got improved working conditions. He always chooses struggle, righteousness, and sacrifice.

In 1976, the budget allocated for the labors and workers' elections were run out, and the legislation of California refused to expend more money (León, 2014). The money spent on the elections for workers' framework was more than the expected amount. Chavez organized the union for recruiting framework and went for legal permission before California voters but was defeated (Zompetti, 2006). Cesar prepared people aware of the efforts of farm labors for restored pay and harmless employed circumstances. He prospered via peaceable strategies (rejects, strikes, and raids). Cesar Chavez and the union wanted acknowledgment of the position and self-esteem of all farm labors and workers. The purpose of the labors and workers was to get recognition and honor for their work and struggles.

He initiated the beginning of the movement for labors and workers (Zompetti, 2006). He organized the movement by religious groups, students, and workers, but the strategies were nonviolent and peaceful. He trained his union workers and labors for strikes and boycotts. The strikes and the boycotts were the weapons used to generate peaceful march and walk around the cities. Farmworkers and labors were worried and were spending life in misery and depression, which motivated him to stand with them. His hard work, dedication, efforts, and willingness proved that he was a respectable worker. The workers were worried and distressed because of the employer's strict and rigid laws and policies. The low wages and pays also made them suffer by the local employers and their viciousness (Zompetti, 2006). Considering that the solitary enduring answer to the complications of farm labors lay in legislature, Chavez maintained the route of California’s Farming Labor Relations Act (the one of its type in the state), which assured to finish the series of desolation and mistreatment and guarantee fairness for the labors (Ganz and Louis, 2001). These capacities, though, demonstrated to be short-term as cultivator obstruction and a sequence of hostile committees weaken the efficiency of the rule (Zompetti, 2006). He served his life as a role model for labors and workers by providing them a mission to organize the workers and labors to improve their lives.

Conclusion

Cesar's efforts for empowering and inaugurating the United Farm Workers Union brought a revolution to the lives of millions of farmers and workers. He dedicated his life for workers and labors by motivating them to stand for their peace, work, and self-respect. He told the people that only peaceful strikes and march could resolve issues and problems of labors and also can get approval from the government and states for new policies and laws for workers (Wells, 2009). He told people that we could triumph and save our self-esteem and form a prodigious union that will protect the essence of all individuals if they do it over a rededication and recommitment to the fight for impartiality via peacefulness. Cesar Chavez was a great leader of his times. He was the first person who fought for the rights of vulnerable and underpaid farmworkers in America. He followed a Nonviolent way of boycotts and strikes (Zompetti, 2006). He supported the people in standing up for their rights, but in a nonviolent way. Caser had many followers, including Robert Kennedy and Dolores Huerta, who helped him a lot to become a frontrunner. Their struggle was not stress-free, those who oppose their reason were rich and influential, and they consumed many associates in great seats. The associates of Cesar were poor, and their partners were few. However, they had something the influential people do not own. They had their own bodies, souls, and feelings and the honesty of their cause as their armaments. He was awarded by various awards and honors, including Jefferson Award, Pacem in Terris Awards (achievements in peace and justice), and several other recognitions.
