QUIZ THREE – FID & narrative unreliability (5%)

Question 1 – Joyce (150 words)

A painful case is a clear depiction of “free narrative style and narrative unreliability” because the third person narrator begins to merge and dissolve in the inner voice of characters. Joyce has depicted the strategies in the form of realisation that a character has at the end of the story, observed in the character sketch of Mr Duffy. James Joyce has layered his epiphanies with such an ambiguity that the context is brought to “solipsistic self-pity”. There is a great companionship that becomes short of love story; Joyce has imparted a triumph of solitude. It would not be wrong to say that Joyce has moulded story in the form of suspense where the third person account is personalised, and then it is seen as a depiction of dramatic experience. The dramatic experience then resulted in a non-dramatic outcome where there are half summoned hints of actions that never happened between Mr Duffy and counterpart character.

Question 2 – Dostoevsky (150 words)

The underground is also a depiction of the unreliability of narration, taking into account that Dostoevsky has imparted the love of destruction and chaos with great passion. He chips at the hardest and complex human motivation by using persuasive and stylistic tools. Dostoevsky succeeded in being hilarious and heart-rending at the same time, “after meaning is a comical construction”. The use of elegant excavation with particularities of era struck the readers with timeless truth such as the truth of the man and use of the first-person style of prose that enhanced chaos. The narrator who seemingly loves to have logorrhea goes about nature and mathematical laws. The narrator is a lazy and wholly unreliable narrator who is depicted as spiteful and outcome reveals that people make thing detrimental knowingly. Quotes like, “How am I ? And “To set myself at ease” depicts the actual unreliability of the narrator.

QUIZ FOUR – Flat or Round? (5%)

i. Father and Eveline in “Eveline.” (75 words)Eveline is a round character; there is a great discord and conflict going on in her. She is competent enough to stay persistent, taking into account that she works hard, have mixed feeling about her father and lacks the courage to make a leap that can grant her freedom. Father is a round character, his portrayal as not just evil character has reflected him as a round character. There are multiple dimensions in his life, but the attachment that kept her daughter with her depicts roundness of his character.

ii. Lenehan and Corley in “Two Gallants.” (75 words)

 Lenehan

Lenehan is a round character because of both charming and entertaining side of his character sketch. There is duality in the character sketch of Lenehan because he kept on manipulating, at one side he is leech side by side he is a “sporting vagrant armed.

Corley

Corley is also a round character because there is a manipulation in character based on the situation. Corley is not conscious of his ways, what he wants and what is actually happening.

iii. Mr Mooney and Mrs Mooney in “The Boarding House.” (75 words)

 Mrs Mooney

Mrs Mooney is a round character because she expresses her thoughts, readers are aware of her intentions, and her interference influences the actual outcome of the story. She is an active character, and she impacted the overall story.

Mr Mooney

Mr Moonay is an absent character so he may be called as a flat character, he is abusive and alchoholic, and he continued his practices throughout the story. He is not a man of words, and he did not try to change his habits.

iv. Farrington and Mr Alleyne in “Counterparts.” (75 words)

Farrigton

Farrington is a flat character he kept on practising his evil activities and frustration in his son; he is not mindful of his activities. None of the activity and stage made him aware of the behaviour that he continued to practice with his son.

Mr Alyene

Mr Alyene is again a flat character because his brutality is the cause of depression and frustration for Farrington and his violence affected his son. He was a boss, and his proud attitude shows his flatness that never changed and ultimately affected the other characters.

Racism VS. Humane Feeling In

Racism vs. Humane Feeling In

[Author’s Name]

[Institutional Affiliation(s)]

Yes, Mr. Compson did much for helping Nancy and he did not discriminate her for being an African woman. It won’t be wrong to say that he could do more to save her from her husband who wanted to kill her for being pregnant with another person’s child. To protect her, he gave her a place to live, let her sleep in his children’s room, and at the end, went to leave her in the lane. Something more he could have done for Nancy was to look for Jesus and get him arrested so that Nancy could live peacefully.

To some extent, Mrs. Compson was reasonable for having a bitter feeling when her husband, Mr. Compson used to leave her alone and walked to Nancy’s house as she was under constant threat of killing by her husband for her illegitimate child. On the other hand, it could be said that despite knowing the severity of situation, Mrs. Compson remained insensitive towards the dangers Nancy was facing.

Mrs. Compson asked her husband to call the police so that they could deal with it as she wanted him to stay out of the situation. Being a mother and a wife, her suggestion was considerable, but Mr. Compson refused to call the police as Nancy had already told them how she was treated in jail, so he did not call the police as he already knew that the police would not help Nancy in this case.

It was justified the way Mrs. Compson reacted against letting Nancy sleep with their children as Jesus, Nancy’s husband had threatened to kill her, so her concerns were justified but she could have acted more humanely like her husband.

Mr. Stovall behaved inhumanely with Nancy and reflected a difference that was obvious between the Blacks and Whites. Nancy’s behavior against the injustice done by Stovall showed her helplessness. Not Stovall, but Nancy was put in jail and she tried to take her life as she knew that she would never get justice in a White dominant society where Blacks are treated like nothing (Erik, 2016). Her reaction to this scenario was pitiable as despite being right, she was beaten in jail. She was in sheer despair and she tried to hang herself as this was the only way she could strike back against White racism. Moreover, she was not at all driven by wildness rather with low-esteem.

Throughout this short story “The Evening Sun”, the oppression and pitiable condition of Blacks could be seen. Considering their condition, Nancy’s work as prostitution seems justified as this was the only thing she could do for earning an income. Mr. Compson’s comment shows that he blamed her for her work and advised her to stay out of it, and just let the Whites do what they want to.

Her terror shows that she refused all the help she was offered. Her behavior to this situation clearly points towards the mental state of the Africans who were living under constant threat (Gale, 2016). Her reaction depicted her rejection of all the help she was offered as she believed that she was hell-born and like all Blacks she is doomed for all that she was facing.

“I reckon it belongs to me. I reckon what I am going to get ain’t no more than mine”. This statement of Nancy shows her oppression. Through this statement, it could be seen that she believes that being an African, she deserved to be killed as it is the only thing they are destined for. She claims that even if she would be killed, it would be no more than what she deserves as a Black.

I would react sympathetically against Nancy’s efforts that she made. It was a heart wrenching situation for me to see her when she was trying to keep the children in her cabin at the end of the story out of fear of her husband Jesus. She was frightened for herself as she knew her husband would kill her any time.

Compson’s children, Jason and Caddy were way better in treating Africans especially Jason behaved in a non-racist way towards Nancy. They were not reacting insensitively and behaved like any sensitive child would. They reacted better than most of the White adults as they went with their father to leave Nancy at her cabin at the end of story where they looked back at Nancy sitting before the fire until she got out of their sight.

Raisin in the Sun

Introduction

“Raisin in the Sun” is a theatrical play that was written and directed by Lorraine Hansberry. The play was first presented for performance in the theaters on March 11, 1959. It revolves around the experiences and struggles of a black family, in a Clybourne Park, where they are trying to improve themselves and their lives, with the help of an insurance payout plan, which has been given to them after the death of their father. The Clybourne Park has been adapted as a functionalized form of the Washington Park Subdivision of the Chicago’s Woodlawn Neighborhood. The play was also named as the best play of the year 1959 by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle.

Discussion

Plot

The play starts with the death of Walter and Beneatha’s father, as a result of which, their mother, Mama (Lena) is going to receive a check of $10000. Walter watches it as an opportunity to fulfill his dreams, whereas Beneatha thinks that it should be mama’s call how to spend this money. Mama divides this amount into two parts and passes on one part to Walter to invest it for the education of his sister Beneatha. Walter wastes it, and both the siblings are deprived of their dreams. On the other hand, Karl Lindner, presents a generous offer to Mama, to buy their home, to avoid inter-racial conflicts in the neighborhood.

Beneatha becomes greatly depressed by the loss of the money, but she is backed up by her friend, Joseph, that she is showing a hugely materialistic approach. She accepts his approach and finally starts watching things from his point of view. Beneatha starts believing that things will eventually get better and she will be able to achieve her dreams.

Beneatha Younger:

Beneatha Younger, often nicknamed as “Bennie," is Walter Lee's Younger sister. She is a twenty-year-old passionate college student with the dream of becoming a successful doctor one day. In fact, she is the most educated member of the Younger family. She has got beautiful and intellectual looks along with rational thinking of her own. Beneatha holds modern views on gender but is also very proud of her African roots. She has strong views over religion, racial assimilation, and feminism and never hesitates to argue on them with her Mama, brother (Walter) or any other person. Beneatha thinks that women should have the right to speak up for themselves and express their opinion. Her way of talking and the accent is visibly different from the rest of the family, all thanks to her education and exposure.

Her courage is clearly visible when she stands in front of her brother when he questions her decision of becoming a doctor. Beneatha states her opinion in the following words:

"Well – you finally got it said . . . It took you three years, but you finally got it said.”

The strength of her opinion is also shown by the following words when she openly comments in front of her family

“Everybody talking 'bout heaven ain't going there!”

Although Beneatha is a strong girl and she supports independence and freedom; still she is a family person and always needs support from her family. She loves her mama dearly and values her opinion a lot.

Conclusion

The character of Beneatha stands an inspiration for many girls, who want to achieve their dreams and are not afraid of anything in order to do so. Beneatha poses as a strong, free-willed girl who thinks that nothing is impossible, but at the same time, she does not forget her roots and never leaves her family, remaining true to her origin.

Rationalism

Introduction

In the middle ages, the science was designed in order to help a person to understand about God and not the worldly material. It is difficult for the medieval scientists to examine the universe outside the bound of religion. During the era from 1300s-1500s, it is considered that science is one of the branches of religion and the thoughts of scientists that the earth is the stationary object and is the center of the universe is held firmly. This view which according to the church is written in the Bible is first challenged when the Copernicus presented his idea that the earth is neither stationary nor it is the center of the universe. New laws were developed overthrowing the concept of science that revolves around the religion and is changed subsequently by the new concepts that are based on the natural laws.

Discussion

Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) shattered the views of Ptolemy and Aristotle. In his book, which is not published until his death, he states that the center of attention of the universe is sun rather than earth and all the planets revolve around the sun in circular orbits. This theory that he presented is named as the Heliocentric Theory. His book as a consequence has enormous religious and scientific backlash. By asserting that the earth is just like the other planets, the impression is destroyed that the heavenly world is different from the earthly world. The Church and religious leaders understood the importance of the Copernicus findings. Luther said that the Copernicus is a fool who wants to turn the astronomical world upside down. Catholic Church declared the theory of Copernicus false in 1616 and continued to hold the view that the earth is the universe focal point.

Galileo Galilee continued the attack on the traditional scientific views. He formulates his ideas using the observations rather than establishing his theories on speculations. For example, his falling bodies law of motions. It was Galileo who established the experimentation which is the modern science cornerstone. He applied his methods of experimentations to astronomy with the help of his newly built telescope. Using the telescope, he discovered Jupiter's moons and said that the moons had the surface containing mountains just like the earth. This discovery destroyed the earlier version that asserts that basically, the planets are a sphere of crystals. Along with this, he also contradicts the notion that the earth is the focal point of the universe and all other planets and sun move around it. Although the notion of the earth as a center of the universe is destroyed by the Copernicus the Galileo destroys this notion using the way of experimentation. Following his book publication in 1632 that criticizes the Ptolemy and Aristotle work, Galileo was incarcerated and then heresy tried by the Inquisition of Papal and is thus forced to take back his views. In modern days, the trial of Galileo is given as an example of the conflict between scientific knowledge and religious beliefs.

Before the work of Galileo, Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) who is of German dissent used the data of Brahe to support the idea of Copernicus that basically all the planets moved around the sun rather than the earth but on contradictory to the Copernicus idea of circular orbits, presented the idea of elliptical orbits. Kepler presented his three planetary laws of motion were based on the relationship based on mathematics and predicts accurately the motion of the planets in a universe around the sun.

John Locke published the letter on the separation between the State and the Church which is also known as the Letter Concerning Toleration argues that there should be a fully observed separation between the State and the Church. In his remarkable letter, it is asserted that the power of the magistrate should be limit and thus should only use its authority to address the issues of securing its subjects properties and ensures the civil peace is established. In other words, the power to inflict on someone unbelief and belief should not be possessed by the state in any given doctrine. Unlike Hobbes, who thinks that the religious uniformity is the only way that can bring the well-being for the civil society, Locke believes that more the number of the religious groups more would be the peace in the society. The response from the church is immediate to the letter of Locke. The clerics of High Church of Angelica Jonas Proast and Thomas Long published the response. John states in its response that the main reason of the letter is to use the disguise of Christians by an atheistically Jesuit plot that wants to achieve the domination by bringing the ruin and chaos to the state and the church.

Conclusion

For many years the Catholic Church holds the view of scientific discovery related to the God and attributed every new thing that comes to the Bible. As the main reason of the discovery according to the Catholic Church should have to be centered on the religion, so if some discovery comes against the teaching of the Church, it would mean that the things told by the Church are wrong. Basically, the discoveries that are led by the Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler are against the fundamental views of the Church and Bible, thus it confronts the belief of the Bible as the true word of God. It also challenges the authority of the Church to hold the scientific point of view. The letter was written by Locke also tries to restrict the authority of the Church thus is prone to the attack from all the Catholic community.

Reappropriating gender stereotypes in Chaucer’s writing

By taking an in-depth look at the “Canterbury tales” and Wife of Bath's Tale, written by Chaucer, it could be seen that Wife of Bath was different from the rest of the women of the medieval age. She embraced only those traits that the patriarchal society imposed on her. She was seen only using these traits when the female identity helped her, otherwise it could be seen that wife of Bath, was the only character strong enough to challenge the male dominant society. Wife of the Bath was the only female character, who was unusual. Though there were two other females as well, even it could be observed that the rest of the two women were following the rules and commands that the patriarchal society imposed on them and were not raising their voice on any discrimination that used to be done with them. Wife of bath has been portrayed as a character who behaves in a way; women were not expected to.

It was seen that wife of Bath used to do all those things, for which she was not created and she used to do all those things that usually men of that time were allowed to do only. For instance, it could be seen that she married five times but women in Chaucer’s time were not allowed to marry again even if their husband died. Wife of Bath challenged the patriarchal society as she was planning her sixth marriage. Another major unusual thing that other women of that time were not willing to do was traveling. Only pilgrim was the only way through which the women could have some entertainment; otherwise, women were not allowed to travel. In the prologue, there has been seen a repetitive use of the phrase "wys women" for women in general sense, but in another perspective, it may have been used as a satire for the women as they are thought to be foolish creature by the men.

Women being emotionally weak are thought to be fool and soft-hearted as well (Warhol,et,al,2018). By taking a look at the work of Judith Butler, it could be said that it is the society that distinguishes between acts that people of one gender would perform. According to Judith Butler, gender is more than a noun in an actual sense; it is a verb that is assigned by the society, and it would be different than the verb assigned to the opposite gender. Gender is not something one is by nature instead it would be better to say that it is what one does. Judith says that it does not matter what is being done but what matter is who did it, so it could be said that if a man is going to do a thing that would be acceptable for society but when the same thing is going to be done by a woman it won't be accepted.

By taking a look at the character of wife of Bath, it could be seen that though she was doing all the things that generally women of that society were not allowed and she was doing all those things for which she was not born. It could also be seen that Wife of Bath has been represented as a character who is selfish enough to do only the things that would work best in her favor. It could be seen that though she was the only female of the prologue who challenged the patriarchal society if looked deeply. It could be seen that she used to accept only those social and moral duties being a female that ultimately benefits her. Another major thing that could be seen in wife of Bath is that she was very different than rest of the females of that time, but still it could be seen that though she had the opportunity, she did not question or raised a voice against the gender stereotypes.

It has been observed that gender stereotyping is one of the most important things that limit the development of talent and abilities of males and females. It is the only thing that influences their educational and professional growth. It also limits the number of opportunities that could be given to them. By taking a look at wife of Bath it could be seen that there are various things that she could have stand for but instead doing that she only raised voice against those discriminatory acts that were casting negative impacts on her freedom or it would not be wrong to say that she was only performing those activities as woman that were favoring her. She was courageous enough to challenges some of the rituals, but she did not put a question against the female stereotypes and discrimination that patriarchal society used to do.

One of the most important things that must be brought into light is that wife of Bath achieved autonomy by performing those society assigned task being a female that was not kind of hurdle for her and her freedom. It could be seen that she was a lady who was happy for having more than one husband. It has been seen that she wanted to get married for the sixth time and when she was not given the permission by the Church, she asked them that in Bible where it has been mentioned that women cannot marry for more than once, when men can. She was a kind of lady who was happy for doing things that were assigned to her being a woman that would only benefit her if an act that has been attached to her being the woman that does not benefit her she used to refuse to do that.

Wife of Bath took many advantages being women as well, and she used her gender just for her benefits and where she could get benefit for being women, she claimed the right of being women. She has been portrayed by Chaucer as a witty lady who behaved like a chameleon when the tag of woman used to favor her. She prefers to be a woman but when being a woman raise questions against the things that made her happy she quickly raise question against the society and the patriarchal society (Hajduk,et,al,2018). She used to own her gender only when she could get things that give her satisfaction, but she does not happily used to accept her gender role when she had to make any sacrifice or had to do anything that is against her will. Wife of Bath should be praised for her wit that she achieved sovereignty by playing only that role and performance that supported her action, vision, freedom and ideology.

Various attributes have been attached with women that are being pointed in this prologue clearly, in one of the line women are said as one who is weak, one who weeps and could not take a stand for her. The phrase “wys women” has been used many times in the text and this repetition could be used in various perspectives as it could be seen that during that time there was no female writer, so whatever a writer used to write about women, they could not oppose that idea. Women were unable to defend themselves if anything wrong used to be written about them. In one sense, “wys women” term is being used for praising the group of the women who used to accept the stereotypical role that has been assigned to them. The phrase “wys women” may be used for discouraging those women who don't embrace the traits that were employed on them. From another perspective, it could be seen that women are being called “wys women” as they cannot win any argument as men used to be reasonable always.

In another perspective, according to the stereotypical medieval society, men used to prefer and praise only those women, who never argue against men and let the man decide about their fate. The repetition of this phrase depicts that for men of that society the meaning of “wys women” depends on how a woman is going to act, if a women is anti-feminist and never argues with men then this phrase “wise women” literally means good women, but the same phrase could be looked upon in a negative sense when women are being called one who deceives men. Women are being called liar as well, and it was said that man could not be good liars like women.

It would not be wrong to say that this repetitive phrase shows that women were not considered wise if they put question for the patriarchal society. If women don’t embrace the role decided by the stereotypical society then women were not thought to be wise, but women of that time were unable to argue against whatever used to be write about them they used to accept everything as there was no female writer at that time who could defend them. Only those wives were considered to be wise, who used to embrace woman trait and used to agree and accept whatever was being said or ordered to them. Wives who used to counter question their husbands were not regarded as wise wives, in the view medieval people. It could be assumed that the phrase “wys wives” is being used as a satire for the wives who used to deceive their husbands. It was also a kind of restriction that men could be in relationship with other women even when they are married, but the women were considered bad and characterless if same thing used to be done by them.

Another important aspect of this prologue is that women are being pointed as one used to be in demand for satisfying the physical needs of men. Women who accept this fact, they are in demand and they have being given a task to satisfy the physical needs of men, were considered to be wise by men (Bjork,et,al,2018). It could be seen that men were allowed to buy woman by spending some money but this thing was not at all expected from women. So as a whole it could be said that women were being used as an item by men but wife of Bath was little different who was breaking the stereotypes of the medieval society by marrying many times and used to highlight that she was a woman when she thought the title of woman would favor here and used to oppose things which the rest of the women used to do without any complaint or argument. Women who used to embrace the traits being imposed by dominant male society took the terms “wys women” as a reward, but the women who used to negate and question ways, men want them to behave took this phrase as a satire on them.

The word “queer” was used for the gender minority who were not heterosexual as this word originally means strange. This word was used for those who were against same-sex desire. According to Judith Butler, all the homosexual movements that started emphasized that with more cultural acceptance of bisexuality, queer would be more accepted and in the past, the word Queer was used for discouraging a person, but today the same word is being used for encouraging a small community of gays and lesbians (Monette,et,al,2018). Homosexuality could be accepted by thinking that it exists in the world. Whether gay or lesbian, as homosexuality has become more popular, it became possible for people to expose that they are homosexuals. Cultural acceptance plays a significant role so that people could accept, they are homosexuals.

Question Answers

Question: 1

The exploration of truth by Twyla and Roberta at the end of the story, regarding what they saw at St. Boony's during their childhood, affects the sense of the truth of the later episodes as well. Roberta tells that Twyla kicked the old black lady, instead of helping her. The whole story has been narrated in the voice of Twyla, and she did not mention the scene earlier. It raises the concern that she may have been telling only the things which benefitted her. It also makes the readers think that Roberta would be more reliable as compared to Twyla because she did not include the information about an incident in order to save her face (Morrison, 235).

Question: 2

When the two girls move to the orphanage and Twyla thinks that she would have to live with a girl of a totally different race, is the point which makes the readers first to assume the racial difference. It also makes the readers aware of the fact that the two girls also belong to two different classes of society. The readers do not change their mind later in the story as the racial differences of the girls are evident, even though there is no explanation about who is actually African American. The author has withheld this information, in order to make the readers think about it and make their own assumptions (Morrison, 238).

Question: 3

The relationship of Twyla and Roberta keeps evolving throughout the story. In the orphanage, they become the support of each other, while not giving importance to their differences. However, after the encounter of their mothers, things become a little complicated between them, which extend to their adult life as well. When both of them get married, they try to get along each other, which are again affected by the racial conditions of the society. In the end, they again connect with each other, as well as talk about their past mistakes (Morrison, 243).

Response Paper

I am interested in the racial difference described in the story. Racial, as well as class difference, is one of the main themes of the short story, although the author has not included information about the exact race of the two main characters. The racial difference was the main thing which kept the two characters at a distance to each other. They try to overcome it again and gains, however, they could not get rid of the reality. Moreover, the societal tensions also affected their relationship and made their race difference a strong hindrance. The racial differences may have been an important theme of the story, which not only impacted the childhood, as well as adulthood of the two characters.

The two characters kept trying to forget about their differences and get along with each other, as they used to do during their childhood. They got along in order to fight with the senior girls who tried to bully them. When their racial difference was accompanied by the class difference in their adulthood, they were unable to think the same about each other still and became hostile. They kept struggling to settle their tensions, however, were unable to do so. At last, they ignored their differences for the sake of their strong relationship during childhood and resolved their differences (Morrison, 240).

The short story has highlighted the fact that racial difference was a strong reality of society. Even if people tried to ignore it and keep their relationships friendly, they were unable o do that because of society. This is the main reason that Twyla and Roberta were also affected by the attitude and thinking of the society, which made them suffer for their whole life.

Reflection essay

I am writing this reflective essay on my experience of scholastic dishonesty. I may be an average student but I could not think to do scholastic dishonesty. I have seen many students in my school who continuously do cheating without any guilty. They are just fine with their behavior. They find nothing wrong in this. I often wondered why cannot they study. What circumstances made them do all this stuff, I never get an answer unless I attempt this unethical behavior my self.

It was the time when I got an assignment to complete. At first, I did not think to take help from somewhere else. I was looking forward to doing my task efficiently on my own. Unfortunately, some factors appeared when it become impossible for me to complete my assignment. Firstly, I had some family issues due to which there was a shortage of time. When I tried to do my assignment, I came to know that my knowledge is not enough to complete my assignment. I need some research or help. As I had a shortage of time and assignment was difficult for me, I start thinking the other way to solve the issue. Firstly, I shared my problem with my friends, but I could find a way. Secondly, I told my family that I could not manage my assignment, but they got angry and forced me to complete my assignment in any way. Thirdly, I saw my classmates who were doing their assignments impressively and efficiently. Lastly, I was so worried about my grades. All these factors that is family pressure, peer pressure, and stress of good grades leads me to take a decision of cheating.

I considered the consequences that I might face while making the cheating decision. I knew that if I get caught, I could be lost my reputation in front of my classmates and teachers. Teachers will remember me as a cheater, the whole year I would face embarassment and my family would be shame on me. Some legal action would be made on me. Maybe I would expel from school. All these consequences were stopping me, but then I thought that if I do not submit my assignment, I will get failed and have to face embarrassment. I was confused between the two options then I made a decision of cheating. I thought it is better to get good marks by cheating rather than get low marks in my assignment. It was my bad luck that my cheating get caught. I am facing embarrassment in front of my teachers and parents. It is so difficult to handle the situation. I am writing this reflection essay to share all my negative as well as positive thoughts and behavior due to the cheating that I have done.

My behavior led me to this awkward situation. After my scholastic dishonesty, I was confident that no one would know about my dishonesty. When I get caught it changed my behavior. Initially, my thoughts were very negative. I just not wanted to agree with the fact. I tried to do anything that could solve the situation. Later when I saw that my parents were affecting due to my action, I start feeling bad. My behavior became positive, and I did not want to hurt my parents anymore. I was guilty. I tried to improve the situation by apologizing.

I had to go through the student conduct process. In the meeting, they told me about my dishonesty. They also told me about the possible outcome of my behavior. They wanted me to get ready for any result. Through student conduct process I understand that it is not just fine to do cheating. No one should think that nothing will happen. Rules and regulations are made for our betterment. Our teachers, parents, and organization want us to teach, provide knowledge, and they want us to become a well behaved and successful person in life. It was the worse feeling of becoming a part of the student conduct process. I never wanted to face this situation, but my one bad act leads me to this point.

If I face the same situation in the future or get a chance to change the past I will definitely change my decision. The moment when I thought that it is fine to do cheating and get pass rather than get failed and face embarrassment, was the thought that I want to remove from my life. I know now that being failed and facing embarrassment is better than your cheating gets caught, and you become guilt. This guilt is much worse than being failure. Therefore I will never make this choice again. I will change my behavior. I will study hard and will avoid dishonesty in the future. I know I cannot change my past, but I definitely change my future. After this experience, I will be more honest and strong to handle the difficult situation rather than finding the short cuts.

I want to fix the situation. I want to solve all the negative impact of this incident. I talked to my parents and made a promise that I will never do anything like this. I will focus on my study from now. The study will be my priority. I will apology to my teachers as well, in front of the class. I want to tell everyone that I am guilty, and I want to solve the issue. This situation will be solved only when I want it to solve, and I really want this. I will do anything possible things that help me to gain the trust of my parents and teachers. If I will work hard and will get higher grades in this way my parents, teachers, and classmates will forget my mistake.

According to integrity mean behaving in an ethical manner. To follow moral and ethical actions is real integrity. The first instance that I want to tell when I rely on the integrity of others is the experience of the dishonesty that I just shared. I had used someone else original work. Before that, I had copied my friend's homework and the third time when I silently entered in the queue to buy something from the shop while others thought that I am following the queue.

There are many events when others rely on my integrity as well. Many classmates took my homework and rephrased it to submit. I also being used during exams when other students asked me questions, and I told them because I thought it is a help and nothing wrong in it. Lastly, when a friend of mine told a lie to their parents and told them that they could ask me. They thought that my friend is true because I was honest about them although I did not lie as they did not ask me anything; it was the experience when someone else relies on my integrity.

At the end I would say that I have done a serious mistake. I am facing problems because of my dishonesty, I desire it. I am sorry for my parents who are facing this awkward situation because of me. I rely on someone else integrity for my assignment. I will not repeat this mistake in my life.

Sophocles, Oedipus the King

Theme = fate

The Oedipus myth tells about the fateful fate. It starts with a story about a particular gift. He and his wife Jocas have been childless for a long time. According to the Athens traditions, it is advisable to turn to the so-called Delphic spindle. The king did so. However, the prestigious soothsayer did not at all want a failed father by telling him that he would have a boy, but when he grew up, he would kill him and then even worse marry with his mother, Lai's wife.

“In thinking of the evil days to come”

This is the story of how vain the mortal's attempt to change what is predicted from above. The philosophical and religious foundation can also be felt after reading a brief summary. King Oidipus is the main character of the legend, where the oracle's prediction is the basis. After fading, Dad tells you to leave a baby born in the wild mountains. But the servant persecutes the child and passes it on to an unknown shepherd. He, on the other hand, to another king, Polyby, whom Oidipus has long for his father.

Sophocles, Antigone

Theme =death

Antigone at Sophocles deliberately drives to meet death, but, like each individual, she is severely part with life, capable so much joy to a young girl. She doubts not about what occurred, but about her dying youth, that she is dying, not grieved by someone. Not to see her more light, not to hear marriage songs, not to be her wife and mother.

“And if I have to die for this pure crime,/ I am content, for I shall rest beside him;/ His love will answer mine” (lines 72-74).

In the misfortune "Antigone" Sophocles discloses one of the genuine conflicts of modern society - the conflict among the general oral laws and the laws of the public. Spiritual beliefs, engrained in centuries . On the other hand, each resident of the polis at the time of Sophocles was appreciative to spend life according to laws of the state, which occasionally sharply contradicted the traditional family and clan norms.

AENEID Book 2

The selected theme is life. The poem Aeneid, written by the great Virgil, and is dedicated to the life. In the song II, Aeneas at the feast of Dido tells about the death of Troy. He depicts the perfidy of the Greeks who, after a long and exhausting war, went to the famous cunning with a wooden horse . The Achaean heroes hiding inside a horse left the night and attacked the sleeping Trojans. Aeneas presents a dramatic episode when the Trojan priest Laocoon , who persuaded his fellow citizens not to bring a horse made by the Greeks into the city, was strangled with his two sons by huge snakes crawling out of the sea.

“All to the life, and every leader known”.

At the time of the attack of the Greeks who had left the horse, Aeneas appeared in a dream to the lost Hector, who said that Troy could not be saved and that those Trojans who could escape should look for a new refuge overseas. During the night fire of Troy, Aeneas heroically fought with enemies, before his eyes the old king Priam was killed, and the famous prophetess Cassandra was captured by the Greeks. The wife of Aeneas, Creusa, also perished. Towards the end, the goddess Venus convinced Aeneas to stop the hopeless clash in order to save the rest of the Trojan people. Having taken the city penates, his son Ascanius, having shouldered the old father Anchise, Aeneas, together with a few Trojans, hid from the burning city, hiding on the nearby mountain Ida. Over the winter, he and his companions soon managed to build 50 ships.

AENEID Book 1

The theme of this book is fate. Aeneid tells of the persecution of Aeneas by the hostile goddess Juno (it corresponded in Greek mythology to Hera , the hater of Hercules ) and about the sea storm, which at the request of Juno sent the god of winds Aeolus to the Trojan squadron. Only with the help of the ruler of the sea Neptune seven ships of Aeneas are saved from this hurricane. They sail to African Carthage . Mother and patroness of Aeneas, the goddess Venus, asks Jupiter to help Aeneas get a kingdom in Italy, and Jupiter agrees to this. In Carthage, Aeneas encourages Venus herself, who appeared to him in the form of a hunter. The god Mercury inclines the Carthaginians to hospitably accept Aeneas. He comes to the Carthaginian Queen Dido, who gives a rich feast in honor of the guest. The fame of Dido goes to all the surrounding countries. Previously, she lived in the Phoenician city of Tire and was the daughter of his king, Mutton. Dying, Mutton bequeathed that Dido and her brother Pygmalion jointly dominate Tire. But Pygmalion, after the death of her father, killed Dido’s husband, and she herself barely managed to escape across the sea to the west, accompanied by many Tyrian residents.

Dido sailed to North Africa, in the possession of the Numidian king Giarba. On one of the hills she saw a fortress. Dido bought from Giarba as much land as an ox-hide can grasp. Having concluded such a contract, Dido cut the skin into thin straps and girdled the whole hill with the aforementioned fortress. The fortress she called Beersa, which means - the skin. A glorious Carthage soon arose around the fortress (in Phoenician, the "New City").

Gender relations, inequality, stereotyping, masculinity, and femininity are some of the most important concepts, which shed light on the patterns of the working of the society. Gender equality is one of the most important demands of the different sections of the society, which is often neglected and compromised by the other sections of society. The researchers are of the view that gender inequality and stereotyping is a prominent feature of the routine life, which is consciously or unconsciously taught to children since the early age and natural becomes part of their practice when they become an active member of the society. Powlishta, Sen, Serbin, Poulin-Dubois, & Eichstedt, (2001) jointly authored a research article which was entitled “From infancy through middle childhood: the role of cognitive and social factors in becoming gendered.” The authors of the article have focused on the notion that the cognitive and social factors play an important role in teaching gender stereotyping to children, ranging from infants to middle childhood.

The authors are trying to communicate that the gendered based practices and values of the society are so intact n its routine fabric that infants learn them from a quite young age and it becomes a part of their thinking and practice. The cognitive development and social factors teach the children the difference between male and female, as well as the toys, colors, sports and other occupations which are typically reserved for the people of either gender. The authors are supporting their contentions by mentioning that boys are more attracted to playing the physical sports, like playing with football or toys like guns, etc., whereas girls play with dolls or other toys of household items, which is the clear distinction of the gender roles of the society (Powlishta et al., 2001).

According to the theory of the authors, the gender affects vocational development through the cognitive development of the children where they see men and women in distinctive separate roles, learn them and then practice them as well. I think the ideas of the authors are quite clear and well established as well and they affect my identity in the way that I have also learned the difference of genders from these stereotypical practices of the society, which ensure the pattern of gender inequality. My response to their ideas impacts and influence the critique in the way that I have to acknowledge the gender inequality in the society, which is taught to the children from an early age of infancy, in order to keep the distinction and difference in the society.

Judith Lorber (1993) authored an article which is entitled "Believing is seeing: Biology as ideology." The authors have argued in the research study that although biology of the human beings is believed to be the basic cause of their distinctions, which ultimately affects their behavior and attitude towards each other, the real cause of the distinction is the social construction of gender differences. The author has mentioned that the western ideology has presented the biological difference of the two genders as the base of their gendered role and status in the society and have tried to justify it by explaining that biological difference of the human beings motivates them to think and behave in a different manner.

The author is supporting his contentions by mentioning that the social constructs of the society have played an important role in highlighting the differences of men and women and then assigning them different and distinctive role accordingly, to maintain a power structure in the society. According to the theory of Lorber, gender affects vocational development in the way that the men and women are assigned the professions and roles in the society not according to their capabilities and competence, but according to their gender. Women are expected to stay limited to their homes, while men can become a part of the labor force (Lorber, 1993).

The idea of the author is right in the term that the biological difference of the two genders is made the base of creating a social distinction in society. The idea of the author affects my identity in the way that it reveals that being a woman, I am weak than the male members of society. My response to author’s idea impact and influence my critique in the way that I do not believe that women are any less than men, as they have the capability of giving a tough competition to men in each and every field of life.

Faiza Ali (2015) authored an article which was entitled "Gender Equality at the Workplace," in which the author has shed light on gender inequality in the work setting. The author is saying that pay gap, the glass ceiling and gender stereotyping are the main components of gender inequality in the work setting and women are the target of this inequality. The author is supporting her contentions by mentioning that the segregation in the workplace ensures the superiority of men over the women, irrespective of their competence. According to the Marxist theory, explained by the author, gender affects vocational development in the way that women are not provided the chances of progress in the work setting, by utilizing the glass ceiling strategy (Ali, 2015).

The ideas presented by the author shed light on the workplace practices of society. The ideas of the author affect my identity in the way that it suggests that I would have to face gender inequality through different means after becoming a part of some workplace. My response to her idea is that although workplace inequality was a consistent part of the society, however, the efforts and services of the women are now being acknowledged and discrimination towards them has decreased to a great extent which is a positive change.

In the given readings, the only thing I found debatable is the discrimination either on the base of social class, race or gender. The similarity in these readings is the sexist nature of society. My understanding of these articles is that it is a society which constructs social biases. The main idea of these articles is how genders are limited by our society. Authors of all these articles narrate the same point of view that nothing is free from being gendered and no one can escape doing gender.

In our society, the bounds are socially constructed. Societal norms are limitations constructed for society by society and this is us who constitute society and these are our influenced factors which lay emphasis on society. The question arises here is if this is us who construct society then why are we offended by society. The authors very beautifully state the prevailing norms of society that affect society in all their faces or phases. Gendering on the basis of race and gender are affecting society and deteriorating it. These norms can prove fatal for the prosperity in society but no one speaks against it because we have been so used of it that these things are considered a part of our culture now.

May it be any kind of harassment, either in the public or private domain, affects people and, is becoming unbearable for all but it is not ending. These articles have different types of studies and researches conducted in order to prove their stance. Each one of the reading ends at same page i.e. speaking of “othering”, “gendering”. These are the evils of society affecting everyone and many mishaps are caused by these frames of thoughts.

In the very first article, the author states the different social classes of our society. These are the classes based on a financial basis. The article states the difference among parent children relationship that how childbearing differs with different social statuses. The classes framed on the basis of social status are lower class, middle class, working class, upper middle class, and the elite class. All of these classes have childbearing as a differential process. There is an eminent difference between brought up children of all classes and studies have proved it. The process differs even at the stage of conceiving babies. The socially constructed classes do differ in all setups. The brought up of children differs with respect to class social norms and bounds that limit parents while bringing up their children. There are several factors such as financial, social cultural, economic, which influences the brought up of children ,It is not mere the brought up children that is affected by these factors but the whole identity of children is based upon the gamut of their brought up as an article states through facts and figures that a child raised by a working-class family would be totally different from the elite class family these are the factors constituting then social bounds and paying heed to the phenomenon of othering.

As stated in the second article there are different types of harassments in the premises of offices, these harassment may be either of in general in nature or sexual in nature mostly it is seen that physical harassment is more spoken about as compared to general harassment whereas as a matter of factor general harassment lays its impact quite rash on the victim, physical harassment is only subjected to genders whereas general harassment can affect anyone in the workplace. In order to ensure peaceful and stable society It is utmost need of the time that higher authorities like the police department, societal development authorities and judiciary should take possible measures to deter and give the penalty to harassers so that they can never do such activity again. Secondly, proper check and balance are required at the workplace, educational institutions, etc.

In the third and last article Author throws light upon term "gender" which means two different sides of coins and to stay at their worthy place genders has to show their traits of presence. Genders remain in society as its part because both perform their tasks accordingly and this phenomenon is inevitable and one can not eradicate the blurred line of gender. Rhetorics has been raised for gender equality but this seems to be merely possible because equality can be granted but the irony of fate equity is lagging behind.

To conclude this Gender word is itself a cause of biases. Our society has been divided on the name of equality regimes like feminism. Despite the fact that segregation prevails in society but there are some positive aspects as well which shows that Genders do enjoy their rights and lives given to them indeed Gender equality is the name of choices one wants. Moreover, this Buzz term Gender is shaping my identity in such a way that I need to set my preferences and set choices accordingly because It has been feed in our subconscious minds that there exist two different forms of existence. I Feel that this Gender a bone of contention needs to be eradicated to ensure a happy and prosperous society.

Despite the abundant characterizations of nature, including humanistic, animistic and god-like features, Crane makes it clear that nature is indifferent to human’s expectations. Through the story, Crane makes the characters understand the reality of nature and tells them that nature is not concerned about humans and humans have no control over nature and on their fate.

The Open Boat is primarily about the dynamics between man and nature. Humanity is represented by four men in the boat, a captain, correspondent, cook, and the oil trader. All these men try to defeat nature, but nature has full control over them. In the story, it is carefully noted that the control of nature is not due to a contempt or special concern of men. Instead, nature is completely indifferent to humans and puts "The Open Boat" in a literary movement known as American Naturalism which is a concept that humans cannot change their fate and focuses on nature's indifference to humans. Despite humans’ best efforts and struggles, The Open Boat demonstrates that humans do not have any control over nature.

In the story, the four men fight against nature to survive by traveling through rough waves of the sea with their tiny lifeboat, which seems like a fight they obviously cannot win. This process deprives them of energy and spirit and leaves them like "mummies". The men are simply at the merciful hands of nature. Cranes also compares how humans and nature that on land humans demonstrate their powers on the natural world by ruling over the animals. All the other things that are related to nature but become helpless once they come under the superpowers of nature like the men who are helpless on the sea and have nowhere to go, "The spray, when it dashed uproariously over the side, made the voyagers shrink and swear like men who were being branded". Therefore, the misunderstandings of man’s control over nature are unfortunately false because nature somehow shows its dominance over the voyagers just like the man who is branding a cow inland ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"p2GSMVzz","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Linhart)","plainCitation":"(Linhart)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":374,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/7TWJQGKV"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/7TWJQGKV"],"itemData":{"id":374,"type":"article-journal","title":"The role of nature in Stephen Crane's The Open Boat and Kate Chopin's The Storm","source":"www.academia.edu","abstract":"The role of nature in Stephen Crane's The Open Boat and Kate Chopin's The Storm","URL":"https://www.academia.edu/7088089/The_role_of_nature_in_Stephen_Cranes_The_Open_Boat_and_Kate_Chopins_The_Storm","language":"en","author":[{"family":"Linhart","given":"Igor"}],"accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",11,23]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Linhart). This human-against-nature dynamic is also reflected in the Caroline ES Norton's poem "Bingers on the Rhine" who joins the violent sea as a correspondent. He remembers the poem he heard in his youth which is about the death of a soldier who is trying to prevent bleeding in a vain by holding his hand over his heart. But his attempt to save his life is useless because nature has control over it. Likewise, the narrator notes that nature particularly fate has the power to drown people, and all that a human being can do in the face of this very real threat is to "shake his fist against the clouds" and to curse his fate which is an ineffective reaction to nature as in the case of soldier who clasps his chest so as not to die. The narrator in the story writes that the four men at the tiny boat are "at the mercy of five oceans” which makes an amazing difference in size and power between nature and humankind. When the correspondent sees a shark next to the board one night, he becomes terrified with a mix of fascination and horror, “The speed and power of the thing were great to be admired. It cut through the water like a gigantic and keen projectile".

Even nature being in its innocuous form has complete control over man. If a seagull lands on the captain, he cannot scare her off because he fears the boat will overturn with his powerful movements which obviously the boat cannot tolerate. Thus, the captain must let the bird sit on his head hesitantly and endure it so that the bird can sit on his head as long as he wants. They are totally under the control of nature as the elements of nature hinder men's progress towards the seashore, "A changed tide tried to force them southward, but the wind and wave said northward”. Regardless of the actions and words of men on the boat, the temperament of the waves changes constantly and in this ultimate show of indifference between nature and humans, a big wave overturns the boat which results in the death of the oiler, but another big wave drives the correspondent safely ashore ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"9CcbH6RT","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Schober)","plainCitation":"(Schober)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":376,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/ECBR9UVU"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/ECBR9UVU"],"itemData":{"id":376,"type":"article-journal","title":"\"A Problem in Small Boat Navigation\": Ocean Metaphors and Emerging Data Epistemology in Stephen Crane's \"The Open Boat\" and Jack London's \"The Heathen\"","container-title":"Studies in American Naturalism","page":"70-88","volume":"12","issue":"1","source":"Project MUSE","DOI":"10.1353/san.2017.0004","ISSN":"1944-6519","title-short":"A Problem in Small Boat Navigation","language":"en","author":[{"family":"Schober","given":"Regina"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2017",11,3]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Schober).

At the beginning of the story, the sea hisses, growls and bucks like an animal but later it just “paces to and fro”. In reality, the sea does not change at all, and it's only the perception of the men that changes about the sea means that this is way nature behaves in reality The unchanged activity of clouds, gulls, and tides shows that nature does not behave differently in light of the men's struggle for survival.

Crane reinforces the idea that nature is indifferent to man by showing that it is as fortuitously hurtful as helpful. As in the story, they experience an unexpectedly good turn in the form of a favorable calm night or wind for every malicious mood man suffers. Cranes observe the fact that people seem to get help from nature but also destroys the concept of nature as an aggressive force. Nothing highlights this point as much as the final rescue of correspondent by nature and he must accept the fact that what put him at risk saved him.

Even after the men reach the land, the indifference of nature continues to go along with them as the shore welcomes correspondent, the cook, and the captain and for these people, shore means survival and safety. But for the oiler who is dead, the shore can only offer “sinister hospitality of the grave”. Therefore, the correspondent understands that nature is not cruel; rather, it is indifferent to humans’ expectations ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"AGDkOHQv","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Colvert)","plainCitation":"(Colvert)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":377,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/YL2ISQZA"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/bWNXhCgk/items/YL2ISQZA"],"itemData":{"id":377,"type":"article-journal","title":"STYLE AND MEANING IN STEPHEN CRANE: The Open Boat","container-title":"Texas Studies in English","page":"34-45","volume":"37","source":"JSTOR","archive":"JSTOR","ISSN":"0364-8656","title-short":"STYLE AND MEANING IN STEPHEN CRANE","author":[{"family":"Colvert","given":"James B."}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["1958"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Colvert). He uses the words “cruel, beneficent, wise or treacherous” for nature. It seems that Cranes shows nature as the representative of God and his indifferences to mankind like in the story the correspondent observes high and cold star in the sky that communicates an idea of God and his indifference. He understands the fact that there is not one God who is involved in the affairs of men but at the same time he denies his very own understanding by saying that “ if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far and contemplate sand and trees? Was I brought here merely to have my nose dragged away as I was about to nibble the sacred cheese of life?”.

The relationship of man with nature is perhaps the most important element in the story as men no longer think that universe intentionally makes them suffer. They realize that it is completely indifferent to what happened to them. After this realization and surviving at the seashore, the men finally see themselves as "interpreters" of nature. In this way, Crane shows and asks his readers to let go of their pride and should feel blessed about what they have and what nature offers to them. They should accept the fact that they are nothing but tiny creatures in front of nature and their indifferences have what put them in trouble. Its nature holds vast extreme powers and can put a big impact on mankind.

Introduction

"Moby Dick; or, The Whale" is a novel written by Herman Melville in 1851. It is his masterpiece, and it took him one and a half year to finish it. The novel has 135 chapters, and it depicts a tale of whale-hunting obsession. Ahab, the captain of the whaling ship, is obsessed with his quest for hunting Moby Dick, the whale who is responsible for the loss of his leg during the previous voyage. The novel could not garner reputation until after the hundredth anniversary of the writer's birth. Today, the book is considered one of the greatest books in the world.

Plot

The narrator, Ishmael, plans for a whaling voyage and signs up for the voyage on Pequod, a whaler owned by Bildad and Peleg. He and his friend, Queequeg, come to know about the ship’s captain, Ahab, that he is recovering from the suffering of one of his earlier voyages. The ship sets sails on a cold Christmas day. Ishmael meets the crew members. Starbuck is the first mate; the second mate is Stubb; the third mate is Flask. Queequeg, Tashtego, and Daggoo are their harpooners respectively. Ahab appears for the first time after the ship sets on the voyage and says his sole purpose of this voyage is to take revenge on Moby Dick, the white whale. Fedallah is Ahab’s harpooner.

The Pequod makes encounters with many other ships during the voyage. The ship advances in the sea and the crew keep on hunting the whales on the way. However, Ahab is getting more obsessed with time by his quest of killing Moby Dick. Every time the ship confronts another ship in the sea, Ahab asks the crew on that ship if they have any news of the white whale, Moby Dick. Fedallah makes a prophecy that Ahab will die in pursuing his quest but Ahab ignores it. Queequeg falls ill during the voyage and he thinks he will not survive. He asks for making a coffin for him. Somehow he recovers and the coffin is kept for use as a lifeboat. Ahab and Starbuck quarrel out of the tension built between the two because of Ahab's desperate quest.

At last the day comes when Ahab sights Moby Dick. The crew prepares for hunting the whale. They try for three days to kill the whale but to no avail. Moby Dick happens to be impossible to kill. On the third day, Moby Dick wrecks the ship. The Pequod sinks and all aboard die. Only Ishmael survives to tell the tale of the wicked Moby Dick (Melville).

Themes

‘Moby Dick’ is a novel that entails various complexities and involves multiple themes. First, the narrator of the story, Ishmael, talks about fate many times and points to the future events in an indirect way. The reader senses that the captain and the ship will have a tragic end. Second, Ahab has limited knowledge to hunt the whales or vice versa, i.e., some whales are unconquerable. Ishmael describes different disciplines of study; however, he finally admits that human knowledge is limited. Third, the perception of reality is difficult to be achieved. The whale is cunning, and it is hard to tackle it. Ahab says at one place that he is not fighting the white whale only, he sees his real enemy in the form of the whale. It is like the whale wears the mask. Fourth, death is a dominant theme of the novel as it can be seen that all the characters die at the end except the narrator, Ishmael. Fifth, this is a story of a ‘deviant’ man, Ahab, who strives against the rules of nature or a kind of his perceived evil representative, the white whale (Brodhead).

Symbolism

The whale is a symbol of death or evil. Ahab is obsessed with the idea of eliminating this evil forever. The whale is dangerous, cunning, and brutal. These are all attributes of evil. The whale is almost undefeatable; only death stands true to this fact. The ship symbolizes ill fate. The coffin serves as a symbol of death at first but becomes a symbol of life at the end of the story (Zoellner).

Conclusion

‘Moby Dick’ is a story of good and evil, revenge and forgiveness, and reality vs. obsession. The author considers many things to explore such as signs of destiny, limits of humanity, deviance against nature, etc. From one perspective, it is a fight of one man against the representative evil force. Another perspective suggests the sheer stubbornness of the protagonist to defeat the invincible. The novel offers much substance to the critical readers for pondering over. It is complex, deep, and multidimensional. It is rightly regarded as the magnum opus of the author.

Glaspell authored two distinct forms of literature which share the same plot. The setting and characters of the two stories are alike, but both stories are presented differently. Trifle, being the first one, revolves around two females who solved the puzzle of women who murdered her husband. Compared to Trifle, her readers find “A jury of her peers” more interesting, since this story is rich in detail. Although both the stories share many commonalities, Trifle contrasts a jury of Peers in narration. Glaspell has even attempted to keep the dialogues in both the stories unchanged. In Trifle, she has employed characters and actors to vocalize the emotions, whereas, in Jury of her peers, she makes her reader feel the emotions ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"sAzkqzVx","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Glaspell, {\\i{}Trifles})","plainCitation":"(Glaspell, Trifles)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1934,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/4PMGT93E"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/4PMGT93E"],"itemData":{"id":1934,"type":"book","title":"Trifles","publisher":"Baker's Plays","source":"Google Scholar","author":[{"family":"Glaspell","given":"Susan"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2010"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Glaspell, Trifles). She has used a descriptive sense of illustration in both stories. Glaspell’s admirers believe that these stories are her signature contribution to the English literature, which no one other than her can attempt to write.

The short story version of her work is more emotionally appealing compared to the play version. For example, Mrs. Peterson character depicts such illustrations at the end of the play. It is where a reader can grasp and interpret the emotions of the county attorney’s wife. It is possible if one attempts to read these stories more analytically ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"884vdC6o","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Glaspell, \\uc0\\u8220{}A Jury of Her Peers\\uc0\\u8221{})","plainCitation":"(Glaspell, “A Jury of Her Peers”)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1935,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/AQIDKKG6"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/AQIDKKG6"],"itemData":{"id":1935,"type":"article-journal","title":"A jury of her peers","container-title":"Images of Women in Literature","page":"370–85","source":"Google Scholar","author":[{"family":"Glaspell","given":"Susan"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["1917"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Glaspell, “A Jury of Her Peers”). The vivid descriptions of the character’s role and their emotions make the readers experience emotions, unlike having to draw their context somewhere in the mind. To illustrate the specific emotions, in both stories, Glaspell has attempted to add small dialogues. It entices readers to share emotions and characters which no one finds normally in English literature. Although much relatable both stories contain passages which give the readers a vibrant sense of the plots. The scene which the author presents in Kitchen best illustrate this preview of the stories as a play.

This vivid description of rudiments in stories makes the reader grasp the sense of stories more quickly. For example, it mentions “everyone in the kitchen looked at rocker”. It further becomes clearer, when another character adds “How do you mean- Queer?” Reading this part of the story instantly makes one understand that Mr. Hale was a bit unwilling in what he spoke instantly. Angel writes that Glaspell uses this style in literature more feasibly compared to her contemporaries ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"be4BLlog","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Angel)","plainCitation":"(Angel)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1937,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/6SKTS7CC"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/6SKTS7CC"],"itemData":{"id":1937,"type":"article-journal","title":"Susan Glaspell's Trifles and A Jury of Her Peers: Woman abuse in a literary and legal context","container-title":"Buff. Another contrast which exists between the two stories is about characters description. In Trifle, it takes a little more to understand the nature of the scene and how characters exhibit what they are meant too. In Jury of Peers, characters are more relatable and become instantly close to readers heart. Such illustration of characters and plot of the stories makes the later duller. Glaspell has exposed this dullness in Jury of Peers.

Although in many ways much relatable, Trifle share an obvious disadvantage over Jury of Peers. Although Glaspell has attempted to exert equal attention in drawing characters Trifle remain narrowly focused over the nature of incidences. Both short stories are easy to interpret but the illustration of emotions and actions contrast them majorly. As like the play, these stories need less imagination and more elaboration. Glaspell has attempted to use this technique in both short stories. Her depiction of the character is a mere illustration of dialogues in Trifle, which she has more literally covered in Jury of Peers. Lastly, there are elements in the stories which require attention by the readers. Glaspell has left those elements on the interpretation of her readers as like the use of symbols. Just for the reading perseverance, both short stories offer enticing elaboration. These stories can more successfully convey their message if performed on a stage, rather their verbal narration.

Isolation In “Gooseberries” by Anton Chekhov

Introduction

The theme of Gooseberries is isolation, the isolation in the story is shown through the setting and general life of the characters. It is the story in which character isolate their life by their own accord without outside influence. The scenes of Gooseberries are plays an important part in showing the isolation by focusing on the isolated lives of characters.

Discussion

Throughout the scenes, the theme of Isolation is the main focus and is shown through the lives of multiple characters. The story itself begins with an isolated character who is visited by another segregated character. Ivan and Bourkin visit Aliokhin who also lives alone, throughout the story there are not more than four characters at a single scene. Even the characters living in the city are in isolation such as the charters of Ivan and Nicholai. The life of Aliokhin is also isolated and happy according to his standards, and he is wealthy compared to Nicholai, but even with all this wealth, he is not satisfied.

The constant isolation of characters bring the reader close to the story, and the reader can be the source of contact for the characters. The Character of Nicholai in the story search for the isolation all his life, and when he starts living in the vast farm, he finally gets the isolation that he desired all his life. While Nicholai is working in the city, his only desire is to escape from his dreams of isolation and is not happy in the city. Even when Nicholai is isolated in the city, he prefers physical isolation (Chekhov, N.P). The character of Ivan also can't find the peace in the city, and the idea of isolation for his is more psychological than physical. All the cast of the story is in some form of segregation.

Conclusions

Throughout the story, readers can experience isolation through the lives of different characters. The characters living in the crowded spaces are also feeling isolation in their life. Through the lifestyle and thoughts of characters, isolation is highlighted.

Anne Bradstreet was born in Northampton shire, England in 1612 and she immigrated to America along with her parents and spouse to Massachusetts, America. It was the time when she started writing poetry in English verses in the American colonies and established herself as one of the first poets who did poetry in the puritan age. Her poetry was highly influenced by the work of Spencer and the poetry of the Elizabethan era. However, in her life, only one collection of her poems was published named The Tenth Muse whereas her other collection of poems Contemplations, was based on the theme of religion but this collection was published after the mid-nineteenth century.

Bradstreet reflects her puritan faith and her bond with God through her poetry because she views the Earthly life as sad and grim. Moreover, her poetry is also centered around the idea of matrimonial love and nature, according to puritan practices at that time. She praises God and all the deities through her poetry, her collection Contemplations reflect a religious theme. For instance, in these verses she is ruminating on nature and its beauty, she then thinks about God who created nature “The more I look’d, the more I grew amaz’d” (Bradstreet, lines 3-4). Moreover, she prefers heavenly life over life on earth because immortality cannot be achieved in this life. Furthermore, she views that man’s life on the earth is limited and according to her Puritan faith, “man was made for endless immortality” (Bradstreet, line 7).

In another poem, On my dear Grand-Child Simon Bradstreet, Who dyed on 16. Novemb. 1669, being but one moneth, and one day, she submits herself to the will of Almighty and places her trust in his divine plans, “Blest babe, why should I once bewail thy fate,” (Bradstreet, line 5). She is extending her voice to the readers and advising them to remain content with whatever they have and submit themselves to God’s will.

Similarly, Matrimonial love is also a striking theme in her poetry because, in puritan age, matrimony was considered both a virtue and a heavenly blessing. She viewed marriage as a bond created by God and in puritan faith, husband and wife were encouraged to love and respect one another. In her poem, To My Dear and Loving Husband, she is valuing her love and emotions for her husband more than worldly material objects such as “gold” and all the “riches of the East” (Bradstreet, lines 5-6). In this verse, she is showing gratitude to her husband for his love and care towards her and she is longing for the company of her husband, who is not with her at the moment “Thy love is such I can no way repay; The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray” (Bradstreet, lines 9-10 ). In this instance, she is asking God to reward him in the afterlife. The love poems written to her husband depicts her happy matrimonial life and due to this happiness, she expresses gratitude towards Almighty, as well.

Phillis Wheatley’s poetry is set in a different era and setting as compared to Anna Bradstreet's poetry but both the poets have a similar theme in their works, love, and praise for God. Bradstreet follows her puritan faith in her poetry and similarly, Wheatley praises God because of her Christian faith. However, Wheatley's poetry also discusses her struggles as an African slave and she seeks help from the Almighty whereas Bradstreet praises him in her good times.

The poetry of Anne Bradstreet is symbolic of her puritan faith and through the themes of religion, spirituality and matrimonial love, the puritan values are manifested in her work. Moreover, the supporting verses taken from her poetry makes it further evident that she is very close to her puritan faith and values because her poetry centers around her religious and social believes.

Gender Roles in a Raisin in the Sun

In the book “ A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Phenomena Woman” authored by Maya Angelou, the aspect of gender is used to show different perspectives of the role of women in the early 1920s. Throughout the book, women are portrayed differently and mostly playing a docile role in society. Hansberry displays in Ruth as a woman who has a good faith and very loyal to her family. It is, therefore, portrays men to be above women. Though women play an important role, it is mostly taken care of by the family. In several events, women are acquired to be submitted to the demand of men without question and therefore, women should just get married and keep quiet as pointed out by Walters Younger (Hansberry 960). Therefore, throughout the book, there is a clear indication of gender imbalance hence women are portrayed as weak and mostly play a docile role in society.

In the book, male bias against women is portrayed by moat males and therefore, male chauvinists traits are used to deny women opportunities in the society. Walter repeatedly criticizes Beneatha’s intention to pursue medicine as a career. This was because Beneatha is a female and Walter does not believe a woman can pursue a career in medicine and therefore, he keeps criticizing medical school dreamsCITATION Lor79 \p 984 \l 1033 (Hansberry 984). Walter constantly talks about the cost of her schooling and all the times his argument is based on the Beneatha being a woman. Walter says that “she should not event imagine of becoming a doctor.” Walter constantly burst with bitterness when asking Bennie, “Who in hell informed you that you had to be a doctor.” (Hansberry 951). He went ahead to tell Bennie that if she is so determined to interact with the sick people she should go and pursue a career in nursing like other women. This indicates that a doctor is a career reserved for men and therefore, it is crazy for Bennie to imagine becoming a doctor.

Hansberry brings in the aspect of dialogue to portray how Beneatha is unconventionality near Walter. It is a stereotype that is meant to belittle women and make them look valueless in society compared to men. This is common among African American society but throughout the book, Hansberry shows a traditional and practice against women which were common in American society. The society believed that women should belong in the kitchen and take care of husband and children and it is the stereotype built across when Walter disregard and urged Beneatha to pursue nursing instead of medicine to become a doctor. It is, therefore, evidence that two perspectives of women are portrayed in the book. The docile and feminist character of what we witnessed in modern society. Ruth is comfortable with her role as a housewife and she takes care of children and very submission to the husband while Beneatha is the feminist of today and most disagree with men and try hard to pursue a career, which is mostly reserved for men. Beneatha does not believe in any African American who is willing and ready to give up on their cultural practice (Hansberry 984). Therefore Beneatha never tolerated any of the remarks made by Walter and therefore, she believe in herself and could do want it takes to attain her dreams.

In conclusion, the role of gender in the book “A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Phenomena Woman” women are portrayed in various perspectives. Women are portrayed as docile and submission and also the feminist aspect of women which is common in the current society is also portrayed through Beneatha's dreams to become a doctor despite being discouraged by Walter and other men in the society.

The Movie Dracula’s Daughter by the director Ambert Hillyer in 1936, was basically a sequel of the classic Dracula movie by Tods Browning in 1931. The movie begins with a scene at Carfax Abbey, after a few seconds of the Climax of the original Dracula movie. The first scene depicts two police mean along with Prof. Van Helsing who is charged for the murder of Dracula. However, the legal procedures in the story are not explored completely because a mysterious woman takes the dead body of Dracula with her for performing some mysterious rituals which she believes will emancipate her from the curse of being a Dracula and hence lead her to a normal life. She has strong desire of living a normal life so that she can get the love in her life.

The mysterious women are Marya Zaleska who appears at the police station, with a magnificent apparition, fully covered in black Abaya. The only visible part is her mesmerizing eyes. She hypnotizes the guard with the ring of her left finger and spirits away from the corpse of her father Dracula. She takes the corpse of Dracula to a forest and puts it to fire to perform the ritual of banishment. Her next dialogue in which she addresses her servant Sandor, provide the viewers with the key to the whole story of Dracula's Daughter. She says that she has been now set free to live like a normal woman, free to create her own space in the bright world of living beings rather than belonging to shadows of the dead. Sandor responds her by saying that this night is over and no one knows about what other nights might bring.

Thus the movie depicts a situation in which Zaleska wishes for living a normal life and desperately wants to get emancipation from her draconic desires. In a social gathering of high society, Zaleska happens to meet Dr. Garth, a character who is to defend the murder of her father, Van Helsing and is also a psychiatrist by profession. Marya Zaleska begins to develop her faith in Dr. Garth after she becomes hopeless of all other options for curing her deviant wishes. At the gathering, Dr. Grath makes an assertion that all the mental disorders are curable. The other people at the gathering also support the assertion of Dr. Grath by the narration of their own individual experiences. The validation of Dr. Graths assertion by the guests at the party increase the legitimacy of Dr. Grath for Marya Zaleska. Hence Marya Zaleska meets Dr. Grath privately to assure him of her dire desire for emancipation from the abnormal aspects of her personality. The doctor tells Zaleska that she needs will power to rage against her abnormal desires.

Despite all her struggles, Marya Zaleska fails to overcome her vampiric desires. She asks her servant Sander to bring a model girl for her painting. Slander brings a young girl and Zaleska asks her to remove her clothes so that she can portray her nude. The young model gets frightened by the lustful staring glare of Zaleska. Zaleska molests the model and fails to overcome her deviant personality.

Marya Zaleska is also depicted in a relationship with her servant Sanders who makes sure that her truth does not get revealed. He also provides Zaleska with the bodies for devouring. By cheating Sander, Marya Zaleska develops an interest for Dr. Grath. She informs Sanders that she wants to turn Dr. Grath in Dracula so that she can live with him forever. This makes Sanders jealous and he kills Marya Zaleska out of jealousy.

The inability of Marya Zaleska to fall in Love

Marya Zaleska is characterized as a monster who is a threat to the traditional domestic ways of life. The movie is based on the narration of domestication of the monsters by portraying Marya Zaleska as a Dracula who desires to live the life of normal women. She is characterized as an unusual woman who is a bisexual and a monster.

The film depicts Marya Zaleska with a desire for emancipation from vampiric personality. Although she wants to live as normal human beings and act as per societal patterns her monstrous urges and impulses force her to do evil things. As compared to the other women depicted in the film, Zaleska is shown as a woman who prefers to wear masculine clothes at the times when she attacks her victims which belong to both genders.

The movie clearly portrays Marya Zaleska as the monster of the story. Zaleska is not a typical monster because she has self-awareness of the fact that she is not normal as per the societal norms. She is conscious of her vampiric desires and urges. She is continuously at war with herself for normal behaviour. She is aware of the fact that the monstrous aspects of her personality are an obstacle for her desires of getting the love of her life.

The story of the movie is sympathetic in nature. The daughter of Dracula is not depicted as a black-and-white incarnation of bad spirit but rather a sympathetic kind of character who struggles with her monstrous desires which arouse her of evil deeds. The scene in which Zaleska attacks the young model for her sexual desire makes the movie Dracula's Daughter the pioneering movie depicting a lesbian vampire.

“Dracula’s Daughter” is a short movie of an hour’s length but it maintains its full characterization of all of its roles. The movie has a surprising ending which comes almost abruptly. Dr. Grath is portrayed as an unromantic hero with an insensitive personality. The film also lacks the horror scenes. The film generates a bittersweet emotional effect on the viewers. Although the movie is based in horror genre it's also romantic. It was progressive in its romance because it was the first movie to depict homosexuality on-screen in the times of 1930s. The movie correlates vampirism with homosexuality. The fact that the movie was released on Valentine's Day also proves that it was more than a horror movie. That was a time of American cinema when the movies based on supernatural beings were not allowed.

Conclusion

The movie identifies homosexuality with the tendency of vampirism. In the American Culture of early 1900s homosexuality was considered as a violation of the natural order of society. The movie also maintains this stance by showing Marya Zaleska as women with bisexual orientations which suggested that the women who desire innately for homosexual relations were impure. Hence lesbianism has been depicted as an evil urge in the movie which the daughter of the Dracula struggles to overcome.

The horror movies of that period of Hollywood usually depicted a doctor particularly a psychiatrist who is supposed to portray the monsters as a threat to the society. Like all other movies of its time, Dracula’s Daughter was also based on the same theme. The character of Dr. Grath makes Marya Zaleska realize that she is clinically abnormal. The homosexual desires of Marya Zaleska have been identified as a mental illness in the movie which was a common narrative of the movies of that period. Hence the death of Marya Zaleska was not taken as a tragic end but an expected outcome of an evil life.
