Unit III Reflection Paper

Leadership at Apple Inc.

Name of student

Name of institution

Apple Inc. was the first company to introduce personal computers and now the company I involved in making mobile phones and other related products. The vision of company states that its will continue making great products by innovation CITATION Ehi13 \l 1033 (E.Aimiuwu, 2013). The company wants to own and control major technologies used by most of its products. Company wants to focus on a small number of projects which will really result in some meaningful outcomes. All our groups help each other in a way that no other company can match. There is a strong set of values that drive the company and it will continue to prosper.

There are three main aspects of this vision statement which are related to leadership of company. First is the innovation which is basically forced by the leadership. In the company, all employees can give their ideas regarding changes in any product. These ideas are put in practice by the company to bring any improvements in their products. This is called participative leadership which includes all people in the company. The second aspect is the self sufficiency of company, the leaders see that it may be difficult or costly for the company to manufacture a product if some parts have to be taken from other companies, and thus, the leadership has decided to take control of all the important parts used in its products.

The leadership at apple wants to keep all people involved. If these employees do not follow the normal procedure in the company, there may be several problems for company. Company will not be able to innovate because there will be poor coordination between employees and leaders. If some employees do not listen to their seniors, company will not be able to produce all the required components for its products. Expansion is one of the most important aspect related to company and if the employees do not follow the leadership, correct and adequate expansion decisions cannot be takenCITATION How \l 1033 (H.Yu, 2013).

Company is focusing on a small number of projects so that it can work profitably. The followers can play a vital role in decision-making and goal setting because they will be at the front end of processes. They will be in a better position to see the trends in consumer behaviors. If they are motivated, they will communicate these changes to their leaders. Ease of communication will play a vital role in this regard which is an important part of participative leadership undertaken by the company. Employees will be allowed to present directly in front of their leaders during meetings.

If company follows only top-down communication, it will affect followers negatively because they will have no option other than following commands. Two way communication will positively affect them because their suggestions will reach top management and will be implemented. This will increase the motivation in employees because they will feel important in organizational decision making.

In my opinion, company has to continue its current practices regarding leadership. Innovation has been the key to success for company and it has been made possible by proper coordination between leaders and followers. Sales and its growth must be used as performance measure whereas the number of valid ideas presented should be used as performance measure of individuals. This is especially true for people working in departments related to product development and software development. Company should choose leaders who have similar stance of leadership which will include the followers in decision making and other important aspects. Effective team work is another criteria that can be used to measure performance of individuals. Those playing an effective part in teams will be considered high performers whereas those who have not been able to work well with teams, will be trained to improve their skills.

What Value Does This Business Bring to the Communities It Serves?

Through the values of self-sustenance and remote accessibility of the most important necessity to survive, food, the food truck business has won the hearts of many people in the communities where it is active. Large ranges of innovative and different cuisines can be enjoyed by diverse groups of people which was otherwise impossible for those living in far-flung areas.

Apart from bringing communities together through the channel of amazing food, the allure and decoration of the food trucks also draws the attention of people and drives them together over the mutual bonds of ethnicity and similar backgrounds.

What Are the Advantages of the Food Truck Business?

The food truck businesses have become quite a hype in this current age of consumerism which is conscious, extreme awareness expressed by the youth regarding their budget and expenditure, and the 24/7 requirements of pacifying their taste buds when they are on the go. There are many advantages of the food truck business which entail the following facts:

The requirement of a low level of initial investment

Involvement of a low operational and functional cost

Source of attraction because of décor and mobility

Experimentation with remote and far-flung locations

Liberty of expansion or building into a restaurant if the revenues are high

What Are the Risks Involved in This Business?

Although the food truck business offers massive potential and further possibilities of investment and expansion, there are huge risks involved ranging from the dangers of problems occurring in the vehicles to the vulnerabilities related to the operator and cook, as is evident from most of the cases that all the duties are performed by only one man CITATION Oku19 \l 1033 (Okumus, 2019).

Natural disasters such as heavy rainfall or snowfall can close the business until the weather is good which implies that there will be a decline in the revenues. There's also the risk of food spoilage as many truck owners can't carry a refrigerator or a chiller in the truck as well. The continuous motion of the food truck can also pose a threat and even if a single commodity is handled wrongly, it can result in fire or other contamination hazards.

What Characteristics of the Owners Help to Make This Business a Success?

Facing no barriers to entry in the food truck business, many people have started this gig and majority have failed as well CITATION Tru19 \l 1033 (Truong, 2019). Being successful and acquiring a certain upper limit of revenues in this dynamic business demands some unique characteristics and personality traits from the owners of this business CITATION Fah19 \l 1033 (Fahlevi, 2019). In the video, Dan is shown to be an extremely resilient individual and when asked what he has learnt so far from the failures of this business, he replied that everything takes longer than expected, which indicates his endurance. Therefore, some qualities which a successful food truck owner must possess are mentioned as follows:

Displaying a passion for the business

An expert in customer service

Courageous and brave in the face of adversity

Action-oriented

Curious and helpful

Focusing on long-term goals

What Type of Entrepreneurship Is Involved in the Video? Explain.

Out of the many types of entrepreneurship, the one involved in the video is categorized as pure entrepreneurship. Out of the duo, Dan Kraus left his well-paid job in finance and started his food truck business. The two owners of the truck are pure entrepreneurs, constantly working and reworking their initial business plan as they face different problems. In pure entrepreneurship, often the entrepreneurs are not satisfied with their existing job even though they are being paid well and have access to all the perks of a 9-5 job. Lack of satisfaction and absence of a particular thrill in an individual’s life drives him to open his own business.

Besides this, often an individual may have a business idea which has unrealized potential and may do extremely well in the foreseeable future, so the individual uses all of his savings, takes a loan in many cases and becomes a pure entrepreneur to achieve his goals.

Furthermore, the food truck owners take pride in the sense of ownership and expressed content saying that in the beginning when sales were not high, it was difficult to incur additional costs but practicing complete autonomy on the business makes it easier for us to deal with hardships.

Why Is Additional Support Critical for the Success of This Business?

In the video, a non-profit organization, ECDI, lends additional support to Dan and Steve's food truck. Having sunk a lot of their savings in this business, Dan and Steve rely on ECDI for any last-minute expenses if there is a mishap. Additional support is vital for the success of a food truck business because there are situations when the truck owners can lose money and liquid capital. The business also requires support for acquiring large sinks, grease disposal, electrical hookups and a secure parking spot when the truck is not running. ECDI, in this video, helps Dan and Steve when they are short of something vital.

What Suggestions Would You Recommend for This Business?

I would suggest that the truck owners should initially plan and devise a scheme for building capital for a year's worth to be on the safe side in the financial perspective. The development of a particular identity and innovative cuisine which is restricted to Dan and Steve's food truck only, can ensure growth and increase in the success rate. Controlling the food prices and ensuring consistency in quality and quantity are also some useful tips to secure the business.

Soft Skills Are More Important Than Hard Skills

In contemporary times when everything is evolving rapidly in various technical, management and commerce avenues, the individuals need to learn life skills as these skills are essential in keeping up with changing times. Moreover, life skills also impact the quality of education and keep the workplace balanced. These skills are categorized into two main skills; hard skills and soft skills.

Hard skills add up to a person's academic qualification and technical skills such as computer skills or accounting expertise. They are a prerequisite for starting a career as an employee. In contrast, soft skills define a person's personality traits, character, and interpersonal skills for instance discipline, communication and time management abilities. In the contemporary age, the importance of both the skills cannot be denied as both the skills establish a person as a successful employee. However, soft skills surpass hard skills when it comes to work ethic because without learning these two significant soft skills, effective communication skills and emotional intelligence, an employee cannot succeed in his desired career.

Communication skills set the foundation for maintaining good client relationships because it is much harder to retain clients than getting them in the first place. Likewise, when a person cannot retain clients, it results in a soft skill gap. It is a common saying that a good speaker is a good listener and communication is a two-way process. If a person does not take into account the concerns and requirements of the client or employer, it might affect his performance and personal growth in the workplace environment. Non-verbal communication is as important as verbal communication, for instance, a person's rude tone and his stern facial expressions can affect his verbal communication. The importance of solving a problem, resolving conflict and teamwork, cannot be accomplished without listening and reflecting first because a manager can better lead his team only through effective communication skills (Hes,2017).

Emotional Intelligence is also considered a significant soft skill; it is a skill that distinguishes between different emotions and tells a person how his emotions can affect the people around him. An emotionally intelligent person is self-aware, self-regulated, motivated, empathetic and maintains good social relations with his coworkers at a workplace. When a person knows his weaknesses and strengths, he can channelize his emotions better and think optimistically. The qualities of honesty and integrity to the team's collective goal and the organization results in goal-oriented performance and even higher work efficiency. Highly motivated people are energetic and this behavior influences other people too at the workplace. Moreover, empathy is the ability to walk in other people's shoes, listen to them and show care for their odd behavior due to stress or workload. An emotionally intelligent person is a socialite as he believes in teamwork and helps his coworkers or team on their way to success. Furthermore, such a person also possesses leadership abilities because he has all the required leadership qualities and personality traits under his belt.

In the present era, word of mouth advertising has also evolved and it has now become a modern word of mouth advertising where people can openly express their opinions about a company or a product through social media. According to a study, soft skills will take over the importance of hard skills in workplaces globally after 2030 (Hes,2017). In modern times, the workplace is interpersonal and only that person can sustain who masters the essential soft skills of effective communication and emotional intelligence.

Business Ethics

Business Ethics or Ethics of Business is the code of conduct that a business or organization follows while performing its business operations. In other words, business ethics is the study of proper business policies and practices which are in regard to the potentially controversial issues of the business. The crisis points that are associated with business ethics mainly include corporate governance, inside business trading, corporate social responsibility, organizational practices and their business ethicality, discrimination, data protection, and fiduciary responsibility, etc.

Why Business Ethics Matters?

There is a number of reasons that state that business ethics matters almost hugely. The main reason which clarifies that why business ethics matter can be witnessed almost every day on the news or newspaper when a business, company, or organization is held accountable to questionable behavior while their brand is tarnished (Koehn, 2005). In short, business ethics matters because it enables the business to make steady and responsible decisions and keep a highly ethical business behavior when operating.

The Distinction between Integrity-Based Ethics and Compliance-Based Ethics?

The difference between integrity-based ethics and compliance-based ethics is enough to clear and fine to understand. These differences can be best explained by the examples below.

In the case when you drive on a freeway, you reduce the speed of your motor only at the situation and time when you approach the camera of any radar area to ensure that you may have a complaint and do not receive any fine. The ethics of such cases is known as Compliance Based Ethics. While on the other side, when a region or area has not been monitored by speed camera but the driver follows the speed rules is considered as Integrity based Ethics.

Organizations/businesses use both of the above approaches where compliance-based is accomplished through policies, while integrity-based ethics is ensured as per employee training and development (Geddes, 2017).

Public speaking skills are an important part of personal and career life. Good communication skills are an inclusive characteristic that distinguishes individuals from others. Technology has been booming and brought about significant changes in the field of communication. It has brought together the whole world and improved the transfer of information all over the world within no time. Technology has improved the patterns of communication and made the task easier for both the receiver as well as the sender. Technology has brought more difficulty in listening to people around, as it is a source of greater distraction. People are extremely indulged in using their gadgets and doing their tasks on their digital devices that it becomes hard for them to focus on what happens around them. It has become very common that people often ignore important messages, announcements, and notices, as they are unable to multitask. The human brain can only handle so much, and the more pressure we put on it, it releases the stress hormone cortisol. Our brains have become addicted to receiving multiple stimuli simultaneously making it hard to focus on one thing at a time ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"SguLAMIQ","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Bormann, 2018)","plainCitation":"(Bormann, 2018)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":664,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/OnfrXiA2/items/P9Q9PUWM"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/OnfrXiA2/items/P9Q9PUWM"],"itemData":{"id":664,"type":"webpage","title":"Our Mind’s on Tech: How Technology Affects the Human Brain","container-title":"Computer History Medium","URL":"https://medium.com/chmcore/our-minds-on-tech-how-technology-affects-the-human-brain-dd8a2ff7490d","title-short":"Our Mind’s on Tech","language":"en","author":[{"family":"Bormann","given":"Sarah"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2018",3]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Bormann, 2018). It leads people to depression and anxiety and it becomes even more difficult for them to be good listeners.

Technology has several advantages especially in improving communication in daily life. However, it comes with certain barriers as well in some cases. There is only one incident in my life where I felt it has made my communication extremely ineffective. It was the time when I was applying for an internship project at a very renowned organization in another state. I had to give an interview and present my project plan over a telephone and video conference. I had prepared well and had been working on it all summers. However, at the time of the presentation, there were certain ambiguities in my plan that I was unable to explain to the supervisor. I had it drawn out the layout and sent it to them, but they were unable to apprehend it and I could find no means to make them understand it. I asked for a week to further work on it but unfortunately, I could not explain it to them over the video conference and I lost the chance to avail that internship. It was that moment when I realized that digital communication has its flaws and it can make some very important communications extremely ineffective.

My advice to anyone struggling from communication barriers due to technology is to understand the extent to which it can comply with official and personal communications. People need to understand that there are limitations to it and it can only be overcome either by innovative programs or by finding out flaws in oneself. Many online programs provide education about using technology in the right order to make communications effective. People struggling with such issues should take those programs. They should focus on improving their interpersonal communication skills and bring confidence so that they can make use of technology in making their tasks easier and effective. They should also be able to bring clarity in their thoughts and understand the need of their audience. The tone, language, and style of communicating is also a very important factor in removing any barriers from digital communication ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"mGKOSrCs","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Natale & Lubniewski, 2018)","plainCitation":"(Natale & Lubniewski, 2018)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":669,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/OnfrXiA2/items/3J5X26EI"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/OnfrXiA2/items/3J5X26EI"],"itemData":{"id":669,"type":"article-journal","title":"Use of communication and technology among educational professionals and families","container-title":"International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education","page":"377-384","volume":"10","issue":"3","author":[{"family":"Natale","given":"Kirstin"},{"family":"Lubniewski","given":"Kathryn"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2018"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Natale & Lubniewski, 2018).

Article review

Johnson examines the role of emotional intelligence in leadership and how it can lead to organizational change. The purpose of the article is to determine how emotional intelligence will improve the role of leaders in challenging situations. The idea is to discourage the toxic leadership culture because it undermines organizational sustainability. A leaders encounter many conflicting situations where he can lose self-control and temper, resulting in disorganization. The author has described organizational behavior by evaluating traditional attitudes of leaders at workplace. The behavior of leader has direct influence on employees motivation. A leader who is frustrated is more likely to exhibit his anger which can undermine self-respect of employees and discourage them from utilizing their full potential. The author has identified emotional intelligence as an essential attribute of leader’s personality. By changing leadership the firm can retain employees for a long duration that will benefit organization.

Emotional intelligence is important organizational behavior because it promote positive work attitude and is linked to improved relationship between the leader and employees. The focus of the article is on enhancing emotional intelligence by lowering aggression and controlling frustration in stressful situations (Johnson, 2016). The important aspects of organizational change are identified in the article that include leading change initiative. The author explains that the leaders must accept the responsibility of transforming their behaviors for improving their role in organizations. They would realize that by changing their attitude they could motivate employees for reaching full potential. Organizational change based on this idea of building emotional intelligence require a culture where group of change leaders is created. Passionate organizational vision is essential for promoting emotional intelligence among leaders. This principle suggests that the leaders must establish emotional connectivity with the goals that will encourage them to exhibit positive attitude. They will realize the need for examining their emotional intelligence and work to improve it. The organization plays significant role in building emotional intelligence such as by developing a reward system. The managers who manage stress and control frustration can be rewarded for encouraging them to continue such behaviors. This organizational change can also be attained by empowering everyone in the firm. This means that all people are provided support and awareness about raising emotional intelligence. Strategies can be taught such as cultural competency for handling conflicting situations. Celebrating positive results such as high productivity can promote other leaders also to build emotional intelligence. Organizations can integrate this strategy for hiring best people. The focus must be on choosing people that are capable of controlling stressful situations and have competency of controlling negative emotions.

Emotional intelligence is important organizational change because it is linked to the performance of employees. By teaching strategies of controlling stress and avoiding anger, the employees can give their best. This will also eliminate negative attitudes that could undermine productivity and organizational efficiency (Anuradha, 2016). These principles are important for organization who are operating in modern age because leaders are facing challenges in competitive markets. This concept is also important because it focuses on leader’s accountability.

The article has emphasized on some business concepts that I covered in the course such as leadership, organizational change, employees’ management and managing conflict. The article provides strategy of dealing with the people’s problem at organizations. Leadership states that they leader must possess appropriate personality traits that allow them to handle conflicting situations and complex problems. Emotional intelligence has positive influence in managing stress and helping employees to exhibit self-control that leads to enhanced performance.

Today, the active role of robots and artificial intelligence in different perspectives of life can never ignore. Changing the working environment is another major reality appeared in case of the revolution of robots and artificial intelligence. It is crucial to examine how the advancing prospects of robots and artificial intelligence (AI) eventually impact the options of employment for human beings. Here the main focus is to provide evidence that helps to argue that the increasing role of robots and AI eventually cause the issue of mass unemployment.

Discussion

It is interesting to examine whether emerging technologies like industrial robots and AI have the potential to replace human beings as workers or it is just a myth. The features of artificial intelligence-based systems and chatbots greatly involved in the case of each industry. The error-free performance by robots raised the major debate on the active role of humans in the workplace setting. It is established by different industrial experts that the increasing approach of AI-powered systems and automation technologies are going to replace the human needs in the organizations ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"9XtzRdK3","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Petropoulos)","plainCitation":"(Petropoulos)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1189,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/7Hi3kAOD/items/FWCGT2Y2"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/7Hi3kAOD/items/FWCGT2Y2"],"itemData":{"id":1189,"type":"article-journal","title":"The impact of artificial intelligence on employment","container-title":"Praise for Work in the Digital Age","page":"119","author":[{"family":"Petropoulos","given":"Georgios"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2018"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Petropoulos 121). It is very much possible that robots take the positions of human jobs that require necessary sand active attention.

There are practical exist in the business world that indicates that organizations start using robots as the alternative of human beings for specific job positions. It is the first alarming stage that clearly induces the problem of massive unemployment. It is critical to consider the seriousness of this issue and how it can handle effectively to ensure proper employment opportunities for the human workforce. Countries need to be well prepared to address the massive involvement of the technological advancements in the form of robots and AI in case of organizational settings. The argument about the growing trend of robots and AI in the organization can never characterize as complete without illustrating the positive role of these technological advancements. Undoubtedly, the latest technologies in the form of robots and AI developments have the potential to provide the necessary support to the human workers to ensure error-free performance in the end ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"NcQcPkhC","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Wisskirchen et al.)","plainCitation":"(Wisskirchen et al.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1190,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/7Hi3kAOD/items/BSFJ6TVH"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/7Hi3kAOD/items/BSFJ6TVH"],"itemData":{"id":1190,"type":"article-journal","title":"Artificial intelligence and robotics and their impact on the workplace","container-title":"IBA Global Employment Institute","page":"2012-2017","author":[{"family":"Wisskirchen","given":"Gerlind"},{"family":"Biacabe","given":"Blandine Thibault"},{"family":"Bormann","given":"Ulrich"},{"family":"Muntz","given":"Annemarie"},{"family":"Niehaus","given":"Gunda"},{"family":"Soler","given":"Guillermo Jiménez"},{"family":"Brauchitsch","given":"Beatrice","non-dropping-particle":"von"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2017"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Wisskirchen et al. 29). These particular technological domains can utilize to save time and achieve better outcomes according to the changing requirements of the business world.

On the other hand, it is also crucial to deeply examine how the increasing perspective of advanced technologies can minimize employment opportunities for human beings. The threat in case of mass unemployment can never ignore as many business organizations are actively involved in the procedure of using robots for different work tasks. The expanding paradigm of technology explicitly reveals that future working approaches will not be the same. The threat of employment scarcity for human beings is the reality that starts influencing people in different social and financial paradigms. The active involvement of robots and AI can observe in case of a variety of work settings and field of medicine is one of them. Currently, the field of medicine is heading towards the approach where robots are using to perform different complex surgeries formerly done by human beings. It is crucial to indicate that positive implications of robots and AI can never overshadow the threat that prevails in case of massive unemployment in the future.

Conclusion

To conclude the discussion, it is important to indicate that increasing involvement of robots and AI in work setting is the potential harm in the form of increased risk of unemployment. There is a need for developing a proper plan of action to address the concern of displaced workers. Automation has gradually cut the job positions for the workers that will be turned as the big challenge for the economy in the future. Development of a balanced approach between the role of robots and human workforce is mandatory to save societies from the panic of mass unemployment.

Researchers identify the advantages of music and its positive effects on the listeners. Music involves many interests “it is often asserted that engagement in music promotes the growth of intellectual capacities and worthy dispositions: accordingly, this is taken to be an indisputable reason for its inclusion in curriculum programmes” (Philpott and Plummeridge). Music education the benefits of music are not limited any one aspect, and the study reveals its substantial influence on the brain functioning. Music education is adequate for child’s development as it enhances intellectual ability, social and creative potentials. Music enhances the reading skills and development of speech. Music helps children in gaining control over themselves and improve focus. The music builds a sense of empathy among children. The audience is the people listening to the music. Studies also depict that student that spends some time with music exhibits useful cognitive and social abilities. Music provides an opportunity to children to express themselves that result in personal growth and enhanced learning capacity. The Royal Conservatory of Music reflects the long term benefits for the society leading to the overall well-being of the people. The results of research conducted by Sylvia Moreno indicate the children displayed cognitive benefits only after a twenty days musician training. The improved cognitive ability reflects the direct link to music with children’s learning. The use of resonance imaging helps the researchers to assess the changes in the cognitive growth after the use of music. Musical activity displays the changes in child’s brain, leading to high academic potential. The research reveals that the whole brain is involved in any activity related to music such as listening, playing instrument or singing. The brain functioning improves through a process of neuroplasticity. The recognizing ability of the brain also enhances resulting in the formation of new neural connections. Active participation of the students in music helps them in displaying positive moods.

The history of music is linked to differed cultures and societies and an essential tool for preserving traditions. Music was also used in history among societies for many reasons. The Tangel wood symposium (1997) illustrates the use of music in the past. “That seminal event, which was held to determine the role of music education in society, focused on better music for young people and the inclusion of music of varied cultures and genres in the school curriculum.” (Hinckley 21). Even in 1990s music remained one of the important concerns of the schools. The music existed even during the periods of Stone Age that was used as a mode of expressing one’s expressions and ideas. Greeks are known for creating music and used it during times of celebrations and even at wars. Many theories prevail about the history of music, but all accept the six periods contributing to the development of music. The period of Renaissance contributed to changes in the music with the introduction of different styles and forms. The artists developed many instruments that enhanced the music. Music influenced the lives of people in the past “archaeological evidence of ancient people caring for the arts practiced in Stone Age civilizations exemplify persistent and widespread aesthetic values” (Feld). Baroque music was famous due to the use of musical instruments such as violin, harp, viola and different tools. The classical music during the eighteenth century introduced piano and developed new symphonies. Folk music emerged during the nineteenth century while technology was familiar aspect of the music of the twentieth century CITATION Ste142 \l 1033 (Feld).

There is a need for reviving the old music that was more influential and meaningful. The global economic downturn caused many schools to eliminate music education, affecting the child’s development and cognitive learning. Davidson explains “for unless in his youth he shall have in some way contract the music habit, either as a performer or as a listener, the adult, engrossed in the practical business of life, will hardly begin to cultivate his sense of beauty” (Davison). The scientists identify that music engage every part of the brain in leading to long-term gain for the people. The data obtained from large-scale studies during the last 20- years depicts the association of learning and mental activity with music. The results obtained from the US schools systems reveals that the students that managed to spend at least nine hours on art in a week were able to perform better compared to the students that disengaged themselves from music. The school's attendance of the students involved in musical activities was also high, showing a low rate of absenteeism CITATION Jun00 \l 1033 (Hinckley). Music is of great value that can be used for influencing the students learning’s and lives of music teachers. Music as a subject creates multiple jobs for teachers, instructors, and trainers. The parents and the students enjoy music as an extracurricular activity as it provided them the opportunity to enjoy and enhance cognitive abilities. Music allow people to manage stress and depression. The society will become a better place as more children will manage aggression and behaviors CITATION Jam16 \l 1033 (Shearer and Fred).

Video Games And Gaming Culture Has A Damaging Effect On Individuals

Introduction

Should violent video games be prohibited? During the last decade, the video games industry has emerged, and its sales boosted at the highest level. Nowadays violent games are found the hot favorite among the younglings worldwide, for example, the First-person Shooters, Call of duty, and these are adventurous and curious so children even many adults can not quit the habit of action based games. Such games have a significant impact on the behavior of kids; consequently, they exhibited aggressions, diverted their interest from studies, and avoided socializing with their friends and family. Anderson et al., (2010) provided evidence, which suggests that it has a causal risk factor in soaring the aggression in all aspects, such as behavior, and cognition, however, it also caused a decline in empathy and socialization. Likewise, studies supported that violent games have consequently affected the educational performance of children; Hasting et al., (2009) suggested parents regulate and control the game plays. It also raised the rate of drop out of students at early stages, while there are severe threats of drugs addiction which leads to unhealthy and disturbed youth. They relate the killings and hurting others with fun and entertainment and representing it acceptable, so children at this stage learn and imitate whatever they get on the media. The issue we raised here is not against all the video games but few games with destructive contents. Many researchers have studied their impacts on different variables and analyzed their positive and negative outcomes. Violent video games must be prohibited, as these games deliver a horrific message to kids, their studies get affected, and they become highly nonsocial. Here we will study the impact of video games on the study, behavior and time for family. In this essay, our focus is on children and teenagers who are addicted to video games.

The research question of this study is; how the violent videogames damage an individual's social life, studies, and mental health?

Discussion

In today’s world the children and adolescents are strongly influenced by media, as they learn and get inspirations from their role models. Especially younglings observe whatever they see and imitate it in their real lives. These actions are then adopted as a permanent behavior. It is a sensitive issue and a minor negligence could yield uncurable loss. So parents, teachers, and state are responsible for coping this issue. Children and even teenagers cannot differentiate between real life and fantasy and always fascinate by some adventures in their lives. These games have some negative contents which could harm the behavior. The psychological diseases and complications are very disastrous and hard to recover even by councilling and medications. The excessive use of video games can cause physical and mental health issues. These issues include eyesight, brain, muscles, obesity as physical health problems. While mental health issues include fear, nightmares, sleep problems, and aggressive behavior. Many studies confirmed that violent games caused more aggression in children as compared to other games. The aggression in children could distract the personality and effects the cognitive abilities of younglings. Furthermore, such children can create problems for parents, teachers, and society through their actions.

It also has significant effects on the studies and capacity building of school going children. Hull et al., (2014) argued that excessive use of video games caused the risk of drugs addiction and aggressive attitude toward other fellows. They added that video games cause the problem of concentration, focus, and memory. According to their findings, children who play video games for 4 hours daily are exposed to drop out of school due to their poor performance. Neutral games if performed for little time under the parents supervision can develop a sense of responsibility and focused on children. Some video games are good for mental sharpness and improve the presence of mind. Teachers nowadays are experiencing to allow some good video games to enhance the focus and decision making of the children.

The action video games declined the socialization of individuals because of their addiction and spending more time to play games. The lack of interest in the socialization may cause social phobia and social anxiety in individuals, which can lead to different psychological consequences such as lack of confidence. They do not experience a strong and meaningful relationship with their partners. The violent video game drastically enhanced psychosocial outcomes. At an early age, human learn very quickly and whatever they observe.

Conclusion

Video games are one of the favorite sources of entertainment; however, its misuse can cause certain problems in the life of an individual. Here we focused more on the school going children and the teenagers. They are the active users of video games, and they are in a developing stage. There are certain games widely available in the market which has adverse effects on the behavior of children. The government has to ban these games immediately to ensure the positive brought up of the new generation. These types of electronic games have severely affected the behavior and cognitive ability of children. In addition to that, this competitive gaming could jeopardize the peace and harmony of society in the long run. The government agencies should review all the contents of games before marketed and sell. A strong legislations are required to control this rapidly growing issue.

Violent Video games cause violence in teenagers

Introduction

Psychology asserts that human beings are the product of both external and internal factors and stimuli. However, child psychology highlights that a children practice and imitate their surroundings. A simple example of this fact is girls imitating and copying their teachers after school and getting themselves dressed like their teachers. In the same way, it is asserted that playing video games has become one of the popular activity for boys of all ages. Video gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry that is capable of boosting the economy more than movies and other businesses. According to research, girls spend more than one-hour playing games while boys spend more than two hours. Among boys, there is a greater ratio of teens who spend time playing video games as compared to others (Maloney et al., 2019, pp. 26-45). Today, video games have become more realistic and more sophisticated, taking into account that some games allow children and adolescents to play along with getting in touch with other players and peers. There are different games, belonging to different sectors of interest, taking into consideration that it is found that exposure to something reshapes and redesigns reality. Increasing evolution in games and the growing interest of teenagers in games highlighted a critical point that affirms violent video games cause violence in teenagers (Maloney et al., 2019, pp. 26-45).

Discussion

According to a study published in October, titled, “Proceedings of the National Academy of Science” researchers tried to resolve the controversy that discusses the impact of violent games on children, taking into account different studies that were published for and against the topic. The results of meta-analysis revealed that playing violent games causes violence in teenagers. It was found that the type of violence is physical aggression and heated discussion on topics. Many of the studies found that the blood and brutality in games divert emotions to an extreme level, highlighting violence in thoughts and language as well accompanied by pushing and hitting (Maloney et al., 2019, pp. 26-45).

In accordance with the research conducted by a social psychologist Dartmouth and his co-author, he said, “I kept on reading all the criticisms and literature regarding the topic, and I found no connection” (Maloney et al., 2019, pp. 26-45). As the result was not satisfactory, so his coauthors underwent meta-analysis to determine the merits of the study. Hull and colleagues collected data from twenty-four different studies that were selected to study some of the criticisms that were published (Maloney et al., 2019, pp. 26-45). The prime focus of the research was to measure the relationship between violent video games and the overt physical aggression. The research was limited to the analysis of studies that were statistically controlled on the basis of several factors that have the potential to influence the relationship between subsequent behaviors and gaming such as aggressive behavior and instant reaction towards other (Sparks et al., 2016).

Although age and other factors were major and significant constraints, still the analysis revealed that the teenagers who play violent games are more aggressive. It is important to note that the changes in behavior were quite low taking into account that it is dependent on the exposure and personal instinct to be violent (Maloney et al., 2019, pp. 26-45). According to the researcher, “If we use a traditional way of looking at the numbers then it would not be a large effect. However, I would say that it is relatively small. Moreover, it is statistically reliable, not by considering chance even not by inconsequential” (Sparks et al., 2016).

The findings of sociologist were found be messing with the literature review that was published in the year 2015 conducted by the American Psychological Association that concluded that violet video games are capable of worsening the aggressive behavior in the older child, teenagers, and even young adults. After the publication of the two combined researches, another researcher who was serving at the State University of Lowe, Douglas Gentile asserted that, “Media Violence is one of the risk factors for causing aggression in teenagers, although it is not one of the biggest factors, not the least factors still, it is worth considering" (Sparks et al., 2016).

In response, another research from the Stetson University of Florida asserted, the degree to which an individual plays video games is directly associated with the aggression analysis, that is termed as “effect size” in psychology. However, he proposed a size effect of 0.08 as a ratio that suggests that the violent games are capable of causing less than one percent of violent behavior among the US teens and pre-teens (Sparks et al., 2016). This statement generates a cause and effect relationship between violent video games and hostile actions. Another psychologist proved that the size effect is not deniable because of its real world significance. Moreover, an analysis of the cause and effect relationship highlighted that playing video games is linked to almost double of the risk that the teenagers are found engaged in school and college fighting and other aggressive attitudes. There are a number of students who are more interested in negative profile actions such as violence, killing, and hitting just to portray themselves as realistic arrogant heroes as found in games.

This research paved the way for other dimensions that included aspects, such as age and the family lineages. Hull and his colleagues found that ethnicity also plays a critical role in defining relationship between concern regarding teenager's violence and violent video games (Sparks et al., 2016). It was found that the white players are found to be more susceptible to the putative effect of the games on the behavior as compared to the Hispanic and Asian players. Although Hull was not all and all assured about the fact; still he found that varying impact of games are related to the cultural norms, taking into account that American Culture is deeply dependent and promoting individualism and the same impact is found in the teenagers, they have a warrior-like a mentality that may incite the video games players taking into account the fact that the player is found to be aggressors rather than victims (Sparks et al., 2016). It was also asserted that the research might impart sympathy towards virtual victims taking into account the core values and behaviors that are outside the games.

The same research inferred that the study is more directed to find a link between the psychological impact of killing in video games and how it diverts and direct real-life actions (Sparks et al., 2016). In a flow up paper of the same research, Hull says that there is a dire need to take initiatives that can tackle issues that are the product of virtual progression resulting in violent and aggressive attitude. According to him, the relationship between violent games and real-life aggression seen in teenagers due to such games is a knotty issue; in fact, it is an open debate that questions, either research would ever be able to quell the controversy or not. In response, many conflicting perspectives were proposed that do rejects the relation but doesn’t negate the size effect, so the issue is left with open loops (Sparks et al., 2016).

Conclusion

In a nutshell, it is found that there is a direct relationship between violent games and aggressive attitude and violence in teenagers, as confirmed by different psychological and sociological researchers. Although the effect varies with exposure as well as the personality attributes of the teenager still, it is a significant ideology to consider because it is one of the motivations that are found behind teenager’s aggression and violence.

Writing is not just an activity, it’s a passion. It is a great time pass and many people even adopt it as a profession to earn their bread and butter. I am also very passionate about writing and thus, in order to become a good writer, I keep looking for tips and tricks to improve my writing skills. For this purpose, I recently went through two very important pieces of advice which I would like to share with you. One of them was in video format, which I found over the internet. This YouTube video, titled “Top Ten Writing Rules From Famous Writers”, gave excellent tips on how a person can become a good writer by giving a little attention to the suggestions given by famous writers of past and present CITATION Ser11 \l 1033 (Services, 2011).

In addition to this, the second advantageous thing or piece of advice that I went through to improve my writing skills was an essay named “Why I Write” by Joan Didion. The writer grabbed the attention of the readers on the fact that why she loved writing and why she would advise everyone to start writing. She has used examples from her personal life at many places that how she was not a good student in the beginning but gradually her interest started building in the department of writing and how it helped her in the academic career as well.

One of my friends, Alexandria David, also worked on the same project and followed the same steps as I did. She saw the video “Success, failure and the drive to keep creating | Elizabeth Gilbert”, and read the essay about writing titled “Writing Advice From a (Newly Minted) Nobel Winner” by Megan Garber. She presented her reflection on both the pieces of literature and found both the advisory pieces very beneficial.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is an unprofessional and unethical act. Genuineness and originality of any idea is natural and the practice of stealing someone’s idea and presenting it as your own is intellectual dishonesty. Honor codes are violated and the person’s reputation is damaged. Something original is the beginning of new and genuine ideas. It is something fresh and new that has never been created or done before. It is a sign of inspiration to create, innovate, and be the first. Being able to think of new ideas and executing them is not something easy to do as it involves a lot of imagination. The original work can be stolen or copied by others, but the originality, genuineness and ideas are owned by the creator and cannot be taken away or stolen.

Originality

Originality is the creation of new ideas, free of any copy or imitation. It describes the relationship of an idea with its thinker or creator. The above image seems original to me as it represents the idea of being unique among the same ideas and content. By looking at the image, one gets the idea that he is beholding a fresh and new substance ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"lFYBydQ3","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Hozey, 2017)","plainCitation":"(Hozey, 2017)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":163,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/zQiT8c1c/items/NUX4AWNF"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/zQiT8c1c/items/NUX4AWNF"],"itemData":{"id":163,"type":"webpage","title":"Where’s the Originality?","container-title":"Medium","abstract":"Is it just me, or is everyone else sick of seeing the same stories over and over and over?","URL":"https://medium.com/100-naked-words/wheres-the-originality-f348e786a85a","language":"en","author":[{"family":"Hozey","given":"Michelle"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2017",5,5]]},"accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",10,14]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Hozey, 2017). Every original idea should be credited to the creator of that idea and should be praised and appreciated. Originality is not easy. It is a creative process that requires a lot of time, energy, research, and hard work. A person’s thinking ability, intelligence, creativity, genius, and hard work are reflected in the original work. In the picture above, the creator has beautifully presented the idea of originality through a happy face among many sad faces that look the same. He is able to catch the attention of viewers and make them realize the importance of originality in work through his genuineness.

Community colleges in the United States of America (USA) are an integral part of the structure of higher education. I would apprise the friend about the potential benefits of enrolling her daughter in the community college. The global economy will change the paradigms of financial programs and loans offered to students. In essence, all these changes will prove productive for the access of higher education in the future in the following ways: reduced financial burden, a plethora of experienced faculty, advantages of artificial intelligence, enhancement of opportunities and greater inclusion of uniform principles in the higher education system.

Terrorism and Homeland Security

Introduction

Terrorism is defined as one of the insider threat that refers to the unlawful use of force and violence by anyone of the individuals who is associated with an organization. The term terrorism was first coined during the French Revolution when the French government interfered and engaged in the reign of terror. The term was used to oppress the people and use terrorism tactics against the revolutionaries who tried to oppose them. The history of terrorism can be traced back to Zealots Sicarii, a jewish group from the first century. They were located in Palestine, when it was occupied by Romans. The goal of the terrorist group was to gain independence from the Romans and incorporate their strict rule (White, & J, 2016). It is asserted that force is used against an organization to achieve some social and political objectives that might be against the interest of an organization. It is also termed as the use of force or violence against a property to intimidate and coerce citizens or government. In particular, insiders use the familiarity of the elements of an organization such as security, empowering layout and structure to maximize and enhance causalities that can sabotage systems.

Discussion

In the past hundred years, there has been a lot of changes and evolutions in the understanding of terrorism, within the framework of a global pattern. By today, there are four major classifications of terrorism such as anarchist, religious wave, the anti-colonial and the new left. These classifications were identified by Rapaport, taking into account that these waves are named based on some terrorist activities in that period. These names have marked some particular waves over time. There are two dimensions to define terrorism, both as a strategy and tactic, a crime as well as a holy duty. Terrorism is also a justified reaction to any kind of oppression as well as an inexcusable abomination (White, & J, 2016). It is also defined as an effective tactic for those who are at the weaker side of the conflict. In accordance with the asymmetric form of conflict, terrorism refers to the coercive power of having a lot of advantages of military force that is serving at a fraction of the cost. However, adhering to the secretive nature and the small size of terrorist organizations, it is highlighted that the opponents are not given significant clues to defend and deter. It is asserted that prevention from terrorism is one of the top priorities of the department taking into account the resolution to protect Americans from any kind of homeland security threats and terrorism, taking into account the ambition of preventing nation-states and their processes (White, & J, 2016). It may include groups of people who are engaged in terrorist and criminal acts and the transnational criminal organizations, where such platforms threaten the Homeland. In the past few years, criminals and terrorists have adopted some unique and new tactics and techniques that can help to circumvent homeland security and threaten the safety prosperity and security of the allies and the American public. Adhering to the rapidly evolving threats from environmental demands, a proactive response was generated by DHS that lets its partners prevent, identify and detect the attacks against the United States (White, & J, 2016). The Department of Homeland Security’s includes several counterterrorism responsibilities that are defined in four different goals, such as collection, analyzing and sharing of actionable intelligence, disrupt and detect threats, protection of events and soft targets along with the analysis of counter weapons of mass destruction and other emerging threats (Martin & G, 2019).

Types of Terrorism

There are two major classifications of terrorism, domestic and international terrorism.

Domestic terrorism refers to the violation and destruction of the citizens of the country without any kind of foreign directions (Anderson & N, 2019).

On the other hand, international terrorism is connected to a foreign government or other groups that have the power to transcend the boundaries of different nations (Anderson & N, 2019).

Terrorism and Homeland Security

The terrorism and homeland security committee are a combination of different emergency service leaders and agents who provide required guidance to the policymakers and IAFC so as to help them prepare for any kind of terrorist attack. Some major tasks are to, identify terrorism and issues related to homeland security, act as a resource to homeland security issues, maintain and foster the rations and are crucial to homeland security leaders and strengthen the visibility of IAFC so as to address issues of homeland security (Terrorism Prevention, 2018).

Terrorism Protection

The Science and Technology Directorate supports the idea that the Department of Homeland Security terrorism prevention has a mission that is applied by conducting a certain evaluation, applied research and the integration of scientifically derived knowledge that can help to inform the policy and other programs to ensure the Homeland Security Enterprise (Terrorism Prevention, 2018). According to the data retrieved from the official website of Homeland Security, it is found that terrorism protection is one of the most crucial ideology to address. In conjunction with the Office of Terrorism Prevention Partnerships, the S&T develops a wide range of resources that can support both local and government partners to support the understanding of individual motives for engaging and disengaging from violent extremism. It is also asserted that the Office also develops and assists in the interventions at the local level that can facilitate conjunction with the local partners along with the valuation of the effectiveness of terrorism protection, activities and policies (Terrorism Prevention, 2018). The platforms of information resources for terrorism protection are research products that include evidence-based products, fact sheets, providing key information about issues, evaluations affirming terrorism prevention policies and program that could inform Homeland Security Enterprise. It is highlighted that the S&T transition to the public, as well as data tools, provide insight into some violent extremism, where prime focuses are understanding the engagement in violent extremism, development of local terrorism and prevention capabilities along with the evaluation of terrorism prevention program and interventions (Terrorism Prevention, 2018).

Counterterrorism and Homeland Security

Taking into account the threat to terrorism that is created vaguely for national homeland security infrastructure that should be understood within a strategic context. It is asserted that the terrorist attacks have a direct cost but on the same platform, they can seek self-injurious overreaction such as waste of taxpayer’s money and blood on the part of victim state, with sympathy gains and recruitment when the victim state misdirects any violent response. However, the weakening of the political order in the society is also attacked this way adhering to the induced intention to act wrongly. In such a case, Homeland security recedes the moral as well as ideological intentions to a high ground that could make the terrorist groups look more legitimate (Anderson & N, 2019).

It is asserted that the policymakers tend to use major risk assessments that can help to prioritize the security efforts along with avoiding the promise of exemplary security. Moreover, civil liberties should be fully protected as well as consistent with the well-focused and fully protected domestic security efforts.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it can be said that terrorism is one of the greatest threats that can compromise all relative and supporting actions and departments of country such as trade relationship, foreign propositions and cultural advances. Moreover, terrorism can challenge the economy of country as well. Significant effort is required to address terrorism threats so that there would be a safe approach towards lives of people and the approach towards representation of country as a peaceful identity.

What's Most Needed In Your Jurisdiction?

Title page

What's needed in the jurisdiction

The jurisdiction stresses on responding to the disaster and emergency situations appropriately. The Federal Emergency Management Institute (FEMA) has established mitigation framework for managing risks through mitigation strategies. The framework defined the core mitigation capabilities for reducing the loss of property and lives resulting from the disaster. The framework also stresses on raising risk awareness and leveraging mitigation products and services all across the country. The risk management response is aimed at contributing to the welfare of the communities and the environment. It is also focused on identifying how hazardous events can be controlled and minimized.

The process starts with understanding the hazards and evaluating the likelihood of the consequences. It then prepares a response and adopts recovery measures when the emergency event occurs. Ongoing risk identification is also an important part of the process CITATION JBu06 \l 1033 (Bullock, Haddow, & Coppola, 2006). The important objectives include protecting the lives of the people and the welfare of persons. The economic aspects stress on maintaining and growing the state's productive capacity and revenues. The social settings ensure the maintenance of public order by providing safety to the people. The state ensures that an effective system is available that is governed under the rule of law. Maintaining functionality of the infrastructure is also part of the jurisdiction including key transport infrastructure and healthcare utilities. It also focuses on efficient management of the emergency services. The jurisdiction also aims at protecting the environment and biodiversity.

The jurisdiction stresses on increasing resilience of the emergencies management and representing it as a collective responsibility of all sectors involving government and non-government agencies. Resilience declines the possibilities of disasters and reduces vulnerabilities by taking actions in advance. Social and physical capacity is strengthened that acts to cope with environmental issues and adapt according to the situation. improved system of resilience requires understating the risks and communicating them at different levels of the community. FEMA has a role in empowering individuals and the community for responding in the best possible way for eliminating the consequences of disasters. An integrated approach is adopted that allows all agencies to act in a coordinated manner. The decisions are made at the lower level while the command and control rest within the top management. The activities of emergency management go beyond the local community’s capability CITATION JBu06 \l 1033 (Bullock, Haddow, & Coppola, 2006). The support is obtained from the state, district and interstate levels. Coordination and integration are effective tools used for facilitating coherent actions that involve all partners.

The stakeholders include the state, non-state agencies, the agencies and partners who are involved in the decision-making. The stakeholders are responsible for deciding the policy measures that lead to the maximization of community welfare by mitigation of risks of hazardous events. The policy measures emphasize on raising awareness among community and people regarding emergency situations and provide guidance for responding in a way that maximizes the community's chances of survival. Critical emergency management requires assessments, evaluation and identification of measures that lead to the promotion of safety at the national level.

Philosophy

“The Meno” is one of the most important section of the book “Plato: Five Dialogue,” which sheds light on the discussion of Socrates and Meno on the topic of virtue. The great philosopher, Socrates tries to teach Meno what virtue is by elaborating its definition, details and the meaning of the concepts. Although Meno is educated and knowledgeable and tries to explain the concept of virtue to Socrates, however, he keeps rejecting all the claims of Meno by raising another concern. Socrates may have saved the life of Meno by explaining him the true meaning and concept of virtue and not letting him steer into different directions.

Meno poses a question to Socrates about what virtue is and it can be learned or not. Socrates tells him that he is not aware of the definition of virtue so cannot have anything to say about if it can be learned or not. Meno starts explaining the definition of virtue to him, which is rejected again. The two people then keep trying to explore the point by searching the definition, exploring that knowledge is innate, virtue can be taught or not and exploring the reason of the absence of the teachers of virtue (Jowett, 15). Socrates at the end, save the life of Meno by making him clear through his reasoning that virtue cannot specifically be taught because it is based on the innate knowledge. Attempt to steer Meno in the different direction relate to the project of philosophy in the way that Socrates wanted him to not just keep sticking to one position but explore all the other and reject them due to the solid reason (Platon, 85).

The discussion of Socrates and Meno is one of the most important in the subject of philosophy. It not only encourages the readers to go in the depth of the concepts and explore their deeper meanings but also encourage them to not settle for the superficial settings. Socrates saved the life of Meno by helping him to explore the deeper meaning of virtue.

Self Love

Recently, I decided to take time and think of all the relationships that are present in a person’s lifetime and this made me question which is the most vital of all the relationships. As human beings, we are bound to meet new people and develop social interactions with them to help us have a sense of belonging. As the saying goes, “no man is an island” which only means human interaction is compulsory and can never be avoided at any cost. In our day to day activities, we end up committing to people all the time, be it our families, friend as well as colleagues. However, many people, including me, tend to forget to show up for that one person who will always be with you during the good times and the hard times that person being oneself.

Looking at the numerous relationships I have accumulated since I was born, I firmly believe the most essential relationship a person can have is by him/herself. In our current society, many individuals who aspire to live positively spend a large amount of time cultivating their relationship with their fellow human. Having a strong relationship with people within the society is not a bad thing but I believe these relationships can have a large impact in a persona life. But how much time to do we spend on ourselves? Having a good relationship with yourself might be defined as selfish as people think you ought to spend most of your time and efforts nurturing your relationship with people within the society. However, it is deemed self-centered not to have a perfect relationship with yourself as this is the foundation of all relationship. Without loving, appreciating and respecting oneself, it becomes hard to reciprocate this love to others. There is no way I can say I love my friends to the moon and back and yet I don’t love myself. Establishing an excellent relationship with yourself if the key to having an excellent relationship with others. Many of us can relate just how much we neglect ourselves and put our needs and priorities after that of the people we love. Many of us ignore ourselves and as a result, begin feeling not worthy of any love. I have come to realize that for you to truly live a fulfilling life, you have to learn to love and prioritize yourself at all times.

All my life, I used to believe family and friends are the most important individuals in a person’s life. This is somehow accurate as my mum and dad have always loved me and they have always been there for me. They have given their love selflessly and I don’t think there is anything as chaste and serene like a parents love. This was the reason I always thought the family was the most vital relationships in the universe. However, I was wrong as I found myself not sharing most of my worries with them as I deemed them controlling and wouldn’t understand what I was going through. When I was heartbroken, they never even knew what was going on in my life. When I was confused about what step to take in my life, I never shared my worries with them. This only shows just how much I was holding back despite thinking they were the world to me. Just like any other relationship, challenges are bound to come your way as you try to find peace with yourself. This is something I have come to embrace as I know there is no quick-fix or a direct solution as these challenges are what makes us stronger. Once I took my time as well as effort and decided to nurture and develop myself everything began falling into place.

To me, the first step to self –love journey was to identify the various techniques that promote healthy interpersonal relationships. In school, I had been taught the various communication styles like submissive, aggressive, manipulative, assertive, and passive-aggressive. After being taught the different communication styles, I took it upon myself to identify where I belonged. My default style is aggressive. I am naturally strong, and at times my aggressiveness has no limits or recognition of different settings. This has its advantages and consequences; for instance, I have found myself talking to almost everyone I meet with whether they are known to just strangers or me. I have made great friends this, but I have equally crossed some unfriendly individuals on the way too, ones that took it out of me maybe for just greeting them including receiving no responses. Some dangerous encounters left me hurt or rather disappointed.

I understand how important my interpersonal relationship skill is whether at home, at school, and at work. I cannot avoid interacting with others in all aspects of life, just as it is said, no man is an island, and hence we need other people in our lives day in day out. What I am doing to better my interpersonal skills perfecting on my communication skills, making sure I am a good listener and only talk when it is necessary. I have also improved on paying attention, noting, and understanding non-verbal communication like body movements. Before, I would get so bored when I work in groups and always felt like other people will only drag my success behind, however, I am now learning how to appreciate teamwork, and I love it more each day that passes. At least I know that if I am in the right group that we share our goals, then we can help each other not only with work-related tasks but also personal life hardships. Each day is becoming more brave and confident to offer advice and suggest solutions to some problems that my friends go through. My decision making skill is getting better each day because I have decided to be open-minded and allow myself to learn continuously.
