Us foreign policy through the Merida Initiative
Mexican authorities have waged war against drug cartels in Mexico for years without much success. As a result, many politicians, police officers, students, and journalists have died on the process. In 2018, several people many of the drug cartels were hit by homicide (Gallaher 335). This has been a constant situation across Mexico and especially Merida. However, the United States took a swift initiative to help in addressing the problem by establishing cooperation between Mexico and the U.S. against drug trafficking. Through the policy, the U.S. states declared war on drug cartels and also established a serious network between the two governments to hunt and destabilized the cartel network both in the U.S. and Mexico.
As stated by Gallaher (338) through cooperation the U.S. agreed to help Mexico and other nations from Central America in combating drug cartels. The initiative included the U.S. providing training, equipment and intelligent to be used in dismantling the drug cartel‘s network in the region CITATION Del11 \p 98 \l 1033 (Delgado-Ramos, Ortega and Romano 98). The U.S. also provided funding for agencies fighting drug cartels in Mexico and also facilitates the hunting of cartels network in the United States so that the financial flow of cartels from the United States could be dismantled. However, according to Delgado-Ramos, Ortega, and Romano (101), the cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico to address the problem in Merida gave Mexico responsibility to cooperate with the U.S. on the war on drug. Mexico government to provide the network facilitates the transfer of drug cartels for prosecution in the United States CITATION Fin17 \p 25 \l 1033 (Finklea and Seelke 25). The Mexico government had also responsibilities to enforce its law enforcement, prosecution and build public confidence as well. Therefore, the initiative has helped in addressing the problem and currently the war or fighting in Mexico because of the drug cartels have reduced compared to 20 years ago.
In conclusion, the Merida initiative or policy was meant to address the drug menace and stop fighting in Mexico. It involved cooperation between two nations through the provision of intelligent, equipment and finances to help in solving the problem. However, the policy helps both countries since its establishment peace has been partially established and cartels operations have reduced across the U.S. and Mexico.
