Nurse practitioner interview
Why have you decided to become a Nurse Practitioner?
The most important thing that fascinated me to choose the nursing profession was my aunt’s death. Seeing her in so much pain gave the initiative to start my endeavors in nursing. I learned that his state lacks good nurses, so he decided to become one.
What do you hate and like the most about the profession?
Contributing to society remained my dream. I love my profession and believe that one day I would make a great nurse. The best part about nursing is that it gives you the opportunity to take care of people. I think when the world lacks humanity; nursing is one of the careers that help keep us alive. The other thing that appeals to me is the opportunity to use my life for the welfare of others. Nursing allows me to connect with people and take care of them, relieving many from pain, curing many of illness and saving people from death. Nursing is the only thing that leads to my inner peace and satisfaction. I am so committed to nursing because I want to serve humanity.
If you have to change in the profession what will it be and why?
I think a positive attitude is important in nursing. Positive attitude plays a significant role in the nursing profession as it allows the nurses to build interaction with the patients. Positive attitude builds a positive relationship between the patients and the nurses. A positive attitude allows patients in healing and is also part of nursing practice. I think the nurses can display positive attitude through gentle voice, tone and maintaining eye-contact. Displaying smile also helps nurses in exhibiting positive attitude towards patients that makes them feel better. So, I would change this thing about nursing profession because many lack a positive approach toward patients.
What do you do with your patient?
I believe in compassionate care and its importance in a nursing career. I think nursing cannot survive without compassionate care. The one who takes the role of a nurse needs to exhibit qualities of humanity. In fact, nursing is all about care and compassion. Compassionate care demands self-awareness and honesty are required for treating patients. The role of nurses is taking care of the patients selflessly and adopt a non- discriminatory behavior. Compassion means showing respect to the patients and understanding their demands. I believe compassionate care allows nurses to learn about the feelings of patients and treating them with empathy. Patients are sensitive, so it is important to treat them with care.
How much time do you spend with your patient during a visit?
I spend at least 20 minutes in each visit, but when turnover is high, I could hardly give 15 minutes. I think this is not appropriate, but hospitals lack nurses that put pressure of handling more patients.
Why did you choose your specialty?
I choose to be a nurse as my specialty because this is the best career for me. I believe I can take the effective role of a nurse and help patients in recovering and fighting against disease. Being part of nursing makes me feel honored as it gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction. I feel proud that I am at least playing a positive role in society by taking care of people. I feel proud to be a part of the nursing profession as I am a member of the nursing community and help patients that become dependent due to their improvement in health.
Have ever regretted your career choice if yes explain if not what kept you in?
Last year I encountered a conflicting situation in which I had to control my stress during my interaction with the patient. The patient was an older woman who was very demanding and asking unnecessary questions. I managed to keep myself compose irrespective of my frustration. After five minutes I just yelled at her. I regret that because that is non-professional and against the nursing philosophy of empathy.
Where do you see yourself in the year the years?
In the next year, I expect to become a Head Nurse. I am dedicated to my profession and have plans of working in different departments. I will develop strong interpersonal skills like verbal and written communications. During this time I will grab every opportunity that will help me in reaching the level of Head Nurse.
How do you deal with a non-compliant patient?
It is easy to deal with the non-complaint patient because they are showing the willingness to improving. With such patients, I manage to convince them easily about the medications, treatments and related issues. I still focus on performing my duty with dedication and without negligence.
How do you deal with a demanding patient?
Last month I had to stay with an older man suffering from Alzheimer’s. The patient was not able to remember many things and also exhibited off behaviors. I did not panic and tried to communicate with him. I talked in a friendly manner and made him feel normal. When the patient learned that I wasn’t treating him like patients, as other nursing staff did he started talking to me. I was amazed he started talking to me as if I was his friend. I learned through the incident that friendly gesture and positive attitude helps in dealing with severe cases also.
