Research Question:
What is the relevance of Patricia Benner’s interpretive phenomenological framework in Brazilian health context?
Objectives:
To gain a thorough understanding of the moral distress experiences of nurses (looking after children with special needs) using the interpretive phenomenological framework of Patricia Benner in a Brazilian context.
Hypothesis:
Interpretive phenomenological framework of Patricia Benner is highly useful in unveiling and getting a deeper understanding of daily-life existential phenomenon in nursing.
Sampling Size:
9 nurses were selected through purposive sampling (working with children demanding special needs).
Method:
Individual interviews were conducted to collect data in form of verbal and non-verbal cues of nurses to gain a comprehensive understanding of their moral experiences with special children.
Analysis:
Data was analyzed using Benner’s interpretive phenomenological framework including following steps:
Transcription
Coding
Thematic Analysis
Search for paradigmatic cases and examples
Research finding:
Although it was quite challenging for the researchers to carry Benner’s qualitative technique of data analysis yet it remained advantageous for them as it allowed them to immerse into subject’s lived experiences and feelings. Hence, it was proved that Interpretive phenomenological framework of Patricia Benner is highly useful in unveiling and getting a deeper understanding of daily-life existential phenomenon in nursing.
