Narrative Essay
Introduction
I am a twenty-year-old Asian student who moved to America 2 years ago for the sake of higher studies. Two years have passed by since I shifted, and it is safe to say that now I have an idea of how things work in the US. I will like to add that it was not easy. Being someone from Asian descent means that I look different from the locals which automatically makes me stand out. During my stay here I have had good experiences, life has treated me good as well, but that does not mean I have avoided discrimination based on my ethnicity and culture altogether. In this paper, I will be talking about my experience in America and how I have managed and looked past the element of discrimination.
Discussion
When I say I have faced discrimination, I do not mean that everyone asked me to go back to China. In every country, there are going to be people who have not yet gone under the stage of progression. However, when I was applying for colleges back in the day, there were certain schools that did not have a good enough reason to reject my college application. It was upsetting to see that big names cannot look past the color of the skin. It was actually a proven fact that even Ivy Leagues are biased when it comes to admissions. I looked passed that and got into a good school of my choice and moved here regardless. Finally, that I was here the first thing that I faced was that the younger American generation can be cruel at times. I have heard various rumors about my culture that are not true, and there are people who constantly picked on me for the way that I look. No matter what the country but being bullied can be hard to deal with, but there were also very kind people who immediately asked them to stop. This experience was more on the immature side, so it was easier for me to get over it, but what the later days brought for me, I was not up for it (Qin, Way and Mukherjee 480-506). One day on my way back from a friend's house to the campus, I was mugged. The fact that it was a street crime was enough to press charges, but when I called for 911 and the first thing that I was asked was that if the person who robbed me passed a racial slur. It was difficult for me to understand the sensitivity of the issue at the time, but now that I have spent more time in the country I knew what the police officer was trying to say. "Never did I seriously consider the possibility that a new racial caste system was operating in this country." Being young makes you look past most of the things that you experience, especially when you are not local. You do not expect people to mug you or push you off the edge just because of the race that you belong to. “The new system had been developed and implemented swiftly, and it was largely invisible.” People who were even residing in the country were not available of the fact that the country has changed to a degree it has.
People nowadays are being judged based on the ethnicity that they belong to. Either one is an as Asian, Black or Hispanic, there is biasness in the way they are being treated. I have seen people who are Asian and have been residing in the country from a very long time, but they still do not get the same healthcare that the whites get. There are some people who do not even own health insurance, to begin with. Things like these make me question the new system.
Conclusion
I was not there at the time when President Obama was elected, but that was supposed to be the turning point for the country. It is upsetting that the progress the country made is back to square one. I have met amazing people here as well who have me think otherwise, but certain things make me think otherwise. The people have started committing crimes of hate on the base of the ethnicity that a person belongs to. I came to the country with high hopes thinking that I will have the experience of my life, but the discrimination I have witnessed not just against myself, but other ethnicities is frustrating. People of different ethnicities made America if you look at history, look at the example set forth by Abraham Lincoln. I am not going to let a small group of people change my perspective; I wish that these people do not overshadow the rest of my time in the country.
