Discussion Week 5
For this assignment, I have viewed the video Trial, error and the God complex by Tim Harford (Harford, 2011). In the video, Tim argued that the majority of the businesses originate from the trial and error method rather than the God complex (Harford, 2011). Tim explained God complex as the belief of an individual that they have the best possible solution to a complicated problem, no matter what (Harford, 2011). To consolidate the idea presented, Tim used numerous examples. For instance, the time when Unilever, a detergent manufacturer, confronted a complex problem of designing a nozzle that would yield the powdered detergent of the right proportions. To solve this problem, Unilever decided to hire the services of a mathematician and a physicist to determine which solution would produce the desired results. After numerous designs, they both failed miserably. After this experience, Unilever decided to design the nozzle by employing trial and error method. Unilever designed a prototype of a nozzle initially. After that, it designed numerous variations of the nozzle, hoping to find the right balance. They separated a nozzle that was producing desired results to a certain extent and made more variation of that certain nozzle. At last, Unilever reached upon a design that produced the desired results. Although the company did not have much idea about how they designed such a nozzle, they were certain that any problem can be solved using the trial and error methodology (Harford, 2011).
For viewing this video, I logged onto the YouTube application and explored TED channel on it. On this channel, I have found people from all walks of life delivering talks. This channel would be beneficial in the future as well because it contains diverse information.
Although I am a college-level writer, I am confident about my writing skills. With time, writing skills are only going to improve further.
A great writer must possess the trait of correcting mistakes to improve writing skills (Cottrell, 2017). With sound writing basics, I am always confident that I would identify any mistake in my writing (Cottrell, 2017). Furthermore, I have used the Grammarly application to identify any minor mistakes in my writing.
