Code of Ethics
The ethical issues that were involved in the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse were that implementing new technologies on the basis of theoretical knowledge only is acceptable for human progress? Are these technologies acceptable where there is a high and severe risk to life and threat to finical loss? All these ethical concerns were raised after the collapse of the Tacoma Narrow Bridge. Whenever a bridge is designed, it is created on the basis of two studies that are theoretical knowledge and experimental knowledge. All these contents are available to the engineers and they know which formula should be applied during the construction because the successful results of such formulas have been seen in previously constructed bridges. Another ethical issue in the case of Tacoma Narrow Bridge was that its design was only implemented on the basis of theoretical knowledge and no such suspension bridge was ever constructed before.
The ethical canons that were violated were that bridge was constructed only on the basis of theoretical knowledge and its design was weak and incomplete. The experimental knowledge was inadequate, and no construction is done until the experimental knowledge is properly adequate and has been successfully used in the past constructions. The engineers proposed the design only to excel in the competition of good reputation and proposed the design with inadequate theoretical and experimental knowledge which violated the canon of public safety, health, and welfare of the public.
If the bridge was designed similar to the ones which were already proven in terms of stability, quality and flexibility the Tacoma Narrow Bridge would never have collapsed which endangered thousands of lives and cost thousands of dollars. Secondly, if engineers had never tried new innovative technologies without adequate theoretical and experimental knowledge, only for the sake of their own success a suspension bridge would never have been constructed, and this catastrophic incident would never happen.
