What Is Your Opinion Of The Idea That The Past Has A Significant Impact On An Individual?
Title page
Impact on an individual
Thesis: The past always influences the present that is reflected in current behavior and personality traits.
Charlie Gordon’s decision of undergoing the operation of artificial intelligence shows, past influence effecting the present. Daniel Keyes in the book “Flowers for Algernon” uses past as a central cause behind changes experienced by Gordon. The behavior of Gordon is the product of his past experiences which becomes visible when he recalls his embarrassing moments. The new idea of artificial intelligence convinced Gordon to identify his weaknesses of the past.
Gordon’s inability of understanding people’s conversations convinced him to accept the operation. He recalled the times when his peer professor Nemur makes him feel like he was dumb for not understanding the language. The past influenced his decision because he underwent a state of realization for learning how he has been before the operation. This reflects that Gordon might not have accepted the operation if his past was pleasant.
Experiences of ignorance and low intelligence, impacted the present of Gordon. The past helps Gordon in witnessing his limitation in life such as low intelligence and ignorance. Gordon’s inability of finding solutions at workplace gives him motivation for surgery. His past acts as a state of realization that helps him in making a wise decision, to make his present more brilliant and happier by undergoing surgery. It is only through the past that Gordon desires for a better present.
The past resurfaces in current experiences of comparing new intelligence with the older one. Throughout the book, Gordon compares his present intelligence with the previous one. Gordon encounters difficulty in the past for handling moral dilemmas such as when Gimpy steals money. His learning of the fact that ignorance is bliss, also reflects the influence of the past. Gordon, by comparing two periods, comes to the conclusion that with low intelligence he was much happier, but with high intelligence he knows many things that put him in a problematic state.
The past also impacts present choices of human beings. Keyes in the book “Flowers for Algernon” portrays the power of past by creating the character of Gordon. Limited intelligence encourages Gordon to increase his artificial intelligence for having a better future.
