Short Essay
The story “More and Better Psychopaths” is written by H.L. Mencken. This story is further divided into different incidents of a psychopath and disturbed murderers who kill police officers in the story. These incidences reflect how police officers put their lives in danger in order to catch criminals that have social and psychological issues. The author directs his readers’ attention to a very significant yet horrible issue of our society by discussing disturbed life of 3 mentally disturbed criminals Mais, Hon and LL.D, and the suffering of policemen while handing them. These criminals make frequent attempts of escaping prison and kill guards on their way. It seems like they are not afraid to do it, they have no motivation to improve their lifestyle and they only play a parole card to go out and keep doing what they do.
Author’s aim is to make his readers think beyond the crime scenes and murders. He wants his readers to investigate what the actual problem is which causes such murderers to do what they do. His style of writing makes readers investigate on their own about the issue and propose what should be the best solution for this horrible situation.
He argues that executing is not the best option because it gives the murderer no hope. Such individuals try to escape from prison and in doing that, they do not care while taking someone else’s life. Such murderers or criminals sure are mentally disturbed according to studies but it is not wise to hand over all such individuals to psychologists. Author has made a strong standpoint that society is what makes them who they are (Mencken). It injects all the poison inside them. He argues that we need to mend our society if want to eradicate criminals and murderers from society. This story gives an outlook which beams light on those who suffer in this horrible issue in our society and endorses its readers to think beyond the horizon.
