Final Discussion
This book called Race, Class and Gender in the United States: An Integrated Study is about many interesting concepts that are faced by the minority ethnic groups present in the United States. These issues are not often highlighted in the print and electronic media; therefore, it is not a surprise as there is little attention given to them.
The issue that is excessively highlighted in the course of several articles present in this book is the issue of racism. Firstly, this issue is highlighted based on the recognition of different races present in America. Often there is a binary classification of races in American as most people believe that either the people living in America are "Whites" or "Non-Whites". This binary classification has often led to certain stereotypes that are both untrue and unjust. For example, in the article Defining Racism: Can we Talk, the writer talks about how several white students think that Cleopatra of the Egyptians was not as beautiful as she was black (pp.106).
Other people believe in the concept of "Neutralization". This concept is explained in the article Color-Blind Racism. The author is trying to explain by the use of this concept that many whites think that the segregation of blacks in the American society is just a normal event, and should be taken as such (pp. 116). This also suggests that American society is not as tolerant as we think it is.
Lastly, the topic that has managed to capture my attention is the concept of stereotypes attached to different races in the American Society. In the article Self-fulfilling Stereotypes, the author is trying to explain how escaping the confides of stereotypes that are attached to different races is becoming different to change over time. The author also tries to explain how the stereotypes are enforced over the period with expected behaviors that are reinforced by the behavior of the society (pp.541).
