1. Auteurs
It a technique used in film criticism whereby the film is linked with the director’s unconscious approach towards directing the film. This approach reflects upon the themes, settings, and delivery of story to the audience; which are persistent throughout the works of the director.
The “The Bicycle Thieves” is directed by Vittorio DeSica. He is known for his outstanding approach towards the stylistic portrayal of social issues in his films. DeSica is known to illuminate Italian post-war era through his revolution style CITATION Car161 \l 1033 (R.J., 2016). His work depict the era in times so magnificently that they are often saved as historical records in the libraries and museums. His style of work is common throughout his films such as Umberto (1952), Miracle in Milan (1951) and The Bicycle thieves (1948).

This approach categorizes the content of the film according to the common themes, forms, and patterns of the film. This approach reflects upon the similarity in the characters, techniques used, stories and the narrations. The genre of a film often categorizes how a film organizes the story and meet the expectations of the audience.

The film demonstrates the use of non-professional actors, real-life locations, and is shot in a documentary style which mirrors the bitter reality of the post-war, torn economy of Italy. The film also attempts to successfully capture the emotions of the actors and associates them with the audience.

The neorealism shows the lacking economic structure of Italy that failed to provide employment or assistance to the poor. It also mirrors the marginalization and powerless subservience of the poor, the loss of dignity and insignificance of lower class.
