Section # 1: Relevant Information
Stress is not only the enemy of human health but it can be made your friend too. We think that stress makes us sick and can lead to shorter life expectancies but actually it can be turned around by changing our belief system that stress is not harmful for health and that it is basically a system of resilience against difficult situations in life. (2:12)
We think that under crunch situations, the extreme physical response of our bodies is due to anxiety but actually our bodies are invigorated and fight back to meet the challenge with strength. Stress response like faster heart beat and breathing are helpful during difficult times. When you think of stress in this way, it brings in more confidence and resilience. Physical stress response can be changed according to one’s thought processing. (3:18)
Chronic stress is associated with cardiovascular diseases because of increased blood vessels constriction. It is not healthy for cardiac muscles to stay in that state for longer period of times. But people who consider the response as helpful, are not subjected to high blood heart rate and their circulatory system remains relaxed. Such individuals get higher life expectancies than the ones who think of it as a harmful condition. (6:02)
Stress makes human beings social. The neuro-hormone oxytocin adjusts social instincts and thus improved social relationships. It instills need for physical contact and improves empathy. It helps humans more caring and supportive for each other. But it is released as a stress hormone by the pituitary glands. It’s a biological stress response and forces you to share your feelings with someone. It also makes you realize about the people who is suffering from the same and need help. (10:45)
Stress hormone oxytocin also helps in protecting the cardiovascular system from the effects of stress. It is a natural-inflammatory and helps keeping the blood vessels relaxed during stress. It a helps in cardiac muscles regeneration and healing from any damage. These benefits are improved by social contact and support. So reaching out to others during stress can be a helpful activity. (9:10)
Section # 2: Clarification
The point that goal of health psychologists is changing and that we don’t have to get rid of our stress but make it our strength. When in a difficult situation, one cannot simply remember how to respond or think that body’s reaction is because I’m good at handling difficult times. (13:10)
Stress provides access to our hearts and open up to compassion and empathy because I believe most of the times, during stress it becomes hard to tell others about your situation and it is certainly not possible to listen to other people’s issues and be a support for them. (12:16)
Believing in oneself and relying on the idea that stress helps you out in decision making is kind of vague. Not everyone wants or gets the chance to chase after the meaning of life all the while being under harmful stress. Trusting oneself and deliberately choosing something that is quite stressful is not a good idea. (14:01)
Section # 3: Professional Application
I want to become a professional counselor and I think this video gave me a few good advices about looking through the future and making sure that people around you are safe at your hands. There is always a chance for improvement and change of thoughts with respect to time and the wellbeing of humans. Every other individual is on some level of stress due to emotional instability, wrong choices or other physiological factors. But the fact remains the same that the mind is all that dictates what the body should go through. So as a counselor, I would like to have this ability of making people listen to me and believe themselves. Because human body response decides the fate of what’s going to happen with it. And with proper counselling, people can actually start caring about themselves and others and fight against what might come their way.
