Aurora Workplace Shooting
News from Chicago Tribune (2019) reports that a 45 years old man after getting fired from his workplace, came back with a gun and targeted many individuals at the office. On 15th of Feb, 2019 an armed man got into the Henry Pratt Co. in Aurora, III and killed 5 people. According to the police, Gary Martin worked at the same company for about 15-years and was recently terminated for unknown reasons. In a crossfire with the police, Gary Martin got killed. However, 6 of the officers got injured during the cross firing. After the incidence, police force informed that within 4 minutes of an emergency call, the police arrived at incidence. However, the person had already killed five of his co-workers.
Workplace violence is one of the major issues in the US and many such incidences are reported previously. However, the common risks for workplace violence are frustrated former workers, customers who were harmed, depressed workforce or a conflict between colleagues causes violence at the workplace. Such incidences can bring serious threats to the workplace. Equally, personal life issues lead to hazardous concerns. Realizing the dangers of workplace violence, many of the organizations and firms planning to overcome these incidences through different procedures and programs. Before hiring and selecting new employees the companies check for the criminal records of the applicant that can be revealed by checking the background. Taking some cautious steps can prevent big loses. Likewise, the other reasons for the workplace can be poor working conditions, new technology implementation, financial issues, low wages, and some psychological issues that cause violence. Similarly, the case discussed above represents the causes of the incidence like termination anger. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the Martin was also facing psychological issues like loneliness.
Workplace violence is caused in any industry bringing the negative consequences to that setting. Another incidence from the past that indicates workplace violence is from Massachusetts. A Chef from hospitable industry became the victim of workplace violence. According to the reports, Diaz Elivelton, 38 in the Northshore Mall in Peabody, was shot by his co-worker (Smith, 2015). It reminds that workplace violence is not limited to one industry, none of the workers are safe anywhere. He was stabbed from the backside for screaming on colleague while on a rush for preparing dinner for the colleagues. It has been a major concern in the United States that on minor conflicts, people are attacking each other.
In order to address serious issues like workforce violence, organizations need to implement some major policies that address workplace violence. Although it may happen rarely, it brings serious consequences. It can be prevented by taking some measure steps that are non-violent. A policy that addresses work-related issues like harassment or bullying. At the same time, workplaces also need effective lines of communication. Effective communication at work will eliminate misunderstandings and conflicts (Shier, Nicholas, Graham & Young, 2018). Moreover, code of conducts like a zero-tolerance can also help. The organizational culture should promote quality relationships with colleagues and higher management. Also, the organization should be lenient in revising its termination policy. A company should also ensure the health of its employees and arrange some healthy training programs to manage the stress. Workplace violence varies in forms, therefore it is impossible for the company to address all the risks in advance. However, some measurable policies can restrict the chances of such violence. Therefore, some common steps can help the organizations to spread awareness and also make up the minds of employees for such incidences. In case, if an event occurs happens in the future, then they will be able to take some protective measures.
