Executive Summary
In this report, a case study has been analyzed. The case study is about dealing with staff performance issues and problems. In the case, a staff member has faced an ethical dilemma where she has two options, one is to handle her financial issues by working full-time while another was to take care of her elderly mothers health instead of a full-time job. In the report, the importance of the dilemma has been found as it is related to the ethical issue of the employee that what she has to prioritize as the most important while both of cases are highly crucial which the staff member had at hand.
For helping her in solving the issue effectively the manager and organization have found a very effective and useful way which is the provision of a loan to that particular staff member. By the provision of a loan to the staff member, she (staff member) would be able to cater all of her financial problems. So, if financial problems have been catered then the staff member would not be required to work full-time and she would have enough time for the care of her mothers health. Furthermore, the employees who do not have pressure in their life, put huge efforts to the organizations success, so by having no pressure of financial problems, the staff member will be effectively contributing to the success of the organization by putting hard efforts.
Beyond that, there are some beneficial and highly useful theories and approaches have been suggested in the report which can be helpful in addressing and solving such a problem or dilemma. These theory and approaches are Respect for Autonomy, Justice Theory, Beneficence theory/approach and The Virtue Approach.
Introduction
The issue which is at hand is the issue of dealing with the performance issues and problems if staff members in the organization. The actual issue is that a junior employee member of the organization who is highly competent and hardworking out of all other staff members wants to work for full-time because of some critical financial issue. But The dilemma here is the health issues of her mother which is a huge barrier in her full-time duty because of her mothers needs proper and highly sensitive home care arrangements and because of this problem/issue she has to miss some important meetings as well as she needs to leave earlier.
In this situation, the dilemma is she has to take one and the most important and highly crucial decision. In this situation, she has to look at her financial issues and difficulties and arrange everything for working full-time as well as she has to keep an eye on the health of her mother and all care arrangements for her. So, as she is a competent and highly talented staff member, this puts a huge impact on performance as well as it puts pressure on her mindset.
Importance of the Issue
The issue at hand is an important and highly crucial because handling and managing such problems regarding staff members put negative impact s on the performance of all employees or staff members especially highly talented and competent which further leads to the overall performance and processes of the organization. Beyond this, this particular issue is highly crucial and important because sometimes, such problem and issues to the resignation of potential and competent staff members which hits the organization and performance of the organization in an adverse way. So, in short, because of these considerations, the issue at hand is enough important to be managed and catered.
Background of the Organization
The above-mentioned dilemma or issue has occurred Gucci Incorporation which is an international company. The company was found by Gucci in 1921 in Florence, Tuscany. Gucci is a multinational organization with having more than 280 employees all over the globe. The company deals and serves customers of elite products and make billions of dollars of profit each year. Gucci has a wider and highly competitive brand image in the China region where the revenues and profits of the firms are increased up to 35.5 in the last few years. The company has expertise in designer handbag satchels, watches and any type of shoes etc.
The company is enjoying as the strongest competitive advantage in the marketplace which their pricing. Their prices are enough lower than all others in the industry and market. Gucci further provides highly convenient and comfortable shopping experiences to all of their customers and work for building mutual and effective long-term business relations with all potential customers around the globe.
Discussion of the Case
The case study or business case is about Gucci which is an international company serving in several countries around the world. During the last year, a junior staff member of the company in China has faced a critical and highly crucial dilemma which was related to ethics. In other words, the faced was an ethical dilemma. The staff member has come back after some leaves for the care of her mother who was seriously ill from several days and needs high-level care. The staff members also have some financial problems for which she needs to work full-time so that she would be able to cater or handle all of her financial problems (Dealing With Staff Performance Issues And Problems, 2019). But she has a number of difficulties in working full-time in which the most critical and highly important problem is the care arrangements for her mother. Because of this issue, she sometimes misses some important and crucial office meetings as well as she leaves earlier than usual. So, both of the issues (financial problem and mother care arrangements) put huge pressure on her life as well as on her job while she is a competent employee of the organization.
In the case, your role is her manager where the manager is fully aware of all activities and workflows in the workplace as well as you are fully aware that the flow of work may also be affected because of such issues. Another thing which can be found a critical which add more difficulty to the dilemma is a male employee or staff member states that the place of the woman is the home as well as devaluing her at all the possibilities. This further leads to higher pressure on her.
The Argument
As mentioned above in the section of the importance of the case, the argument would a supporting argument to the issue which properly proves the concern point rather than refuting the point. All the organizations and companies always have several strategies and tactics regarding their employees and workplace management. They have a number of tools which are used for handling and managing complex and unusual problems, concerns or issues. Further, all the organizations put huge efforts to strengthen their operations and procedures of work and eliminate all miss happenings and problem an employee or employees face.
So in this case, the issue can be found a crucial and highly important which needs to be resolved and managed effectively in any possible way. It is critical problem because it has an impact on the personal life of the staff member as well as on her performance and competencies in the workplace which has a direct relation with the success and failure of the company or organization. As well as this issue may lead that particular staff member to leave the organization at any time and any stage which could be a negative sign for the organization.
So, resolving the issue, the manager and organization or company can use a number of techniques but the suggested one would be the provision of a loan to the particular staff member. By providing or offering loan to the person, she will be able to cater and manage all of her financial problems conveniently. So once the financial problems are managed then she will be free of any pressure and will be able to put best efforts for the success of the company or organization. As well as all care arrangements can also be handled properly which will further be a positive impact on the performance of the employee. In case of meeting and answering the question of the place of the woman is the home, the manager and even entire organization or company have to develop the environment where the concept equal opportunity employment is exercised. So that no one of the staff members may raise such comments.
Ethical Decision-Making Approaches and Theories
There is a number of ethical decision-making theories an approach which is used for decision making and a number of managers and employees and even individuals rely on them. But the most appropriate ethical decision-making theories and approaches on which we will rely are listed and explained below.
Respect for Autonomy
Respect for autonomy is an ethical decision-making theory which focuses on the independence of a person in making an ethical decision. According to (John, 2005) this theory allows the particular person to make his or her ethical decisions by his or herself that effectively apply to their lives and activities. So in this case, people would have full control over their life and routine activities because they are the people who understand and know that what should they do and what should they adapt and decide. We may rely upon this ethical decision-making theory for reaching our conclusion because it gives us an idea to provide full independence to the particular employee for making her decision by herself so that she might find a better and effective solution of the problem and issue she is facing.
Justice Theory
Justice theory is an effective and highly useful ethical decision-making theory which focuses on decision making while facing a particular issue or dilemma. This theory states that the person who faces a problem or dilemma should justify the significance of the situation or situations or particular aspects and then make his or her decision accordingly (John, 2005). This theory can be used and taken into action for reaching the conclusion because it suggests to decide the most crucial and important consideration against less valued and important one and here we also have the similar dilemma in which we need to finalize and take decision about one over another (mother care or full-time duty to meet financial problems).
Beneficence
The theory beneficence helps the decision maker(s) to proceed with what if right, fine and good. The priority of go with good and fine makes the possible solution to an ethical dilemma acceptable (John, 2005). This theory of ethical decision making further focuses that the largest of good over the others. As well as theory is associated with that the people should go towards the highest amount of good because all the people benefit the most good. So this theory or concept can be used to reach our conclusion because we also have to go for the most good in the dilemma we face.
The Virtue Approach
This ethical decision-making approach assumes that there is a number of concepts towards which we should strive that provide for the development of humanity. Virtue is the characteristics which enable us to act in a way which develops our highest potential. This further enables us to adopt honesty, courage, integrity, and self-control in any clumsy situation (John, 2005). So this approach is also helpful for us and we should rely on it because it helps us to adopt the characteristics which help us in managing complex problems and deal with dilemmas.
Conclusion
After the deep analysis of the report, it has been concluded that there is a number of dilemmas come in life to be faced by people which may be in daily life or it may be at the workplace. The dilemma studied and analyzed in this report is about a female staff member of Gucci Corporation who faced the issue of the financial problem as well as she had to take care of her mother who was ill. In this dilemma, she had to work full-time to get higher payments for solving her financial problems while she had to take care of her elderly mother which was becoming a barrier in doing a full-time job. The dilemma as found an important one because it was about caring someones health while meeting personal financial problems. So in this report, some theories and ethical decision-making approaches have been discussed and stated which can be utilized to take the finest and perfect decision as well as resolve the dilemma in a fine way.
