Assignment 2
Introduction
Sports have a unique ability that goes beyond any social or cultural divide, which makes it a great stage for inclusion and adaptation (Coakley, 2015). Additionally, the social, economic, and physical advantages of sports help to ensure that even persons with disabilities have their fair share. More often than not, a person with a disability is subjected to different obstacles, restraining them from being a contributing citizen. Undoubtedly, many eminent personalities have contributed towards reducing the barriers that persons with disability face.
Discussion
Historically, persons with disabilities are ill-treated. Greeks and Romans viewed disable persons as inferior. Plato recommended sending disable people far way (DeIuliis, 2016). On the Contrary, Christianity believed that disability is a mean for purification. In the 19th century, social aid was opposed, that was meant for the disabled people. The history of sports and physical activity dates back to ancient times. In the beginning, sports were related to military only. The soldiers trained to maintain physical sharpness. International disability sports event for persons with hearing impairment was first conducted in 1924. Sir Ludwig Guttman, for the first time, organized a race for wheelchairs athletes (Brittain, 2016). Currently, the International Paralympic Committee is the body which oversees the sporting events of the disabled persons. Disability is a multidimensional issue. Disable persons are subjected to different issues. Disability has received very little attention from the researchers until now. Trends and milestones in the disability sports domain include the ratification of the charter of rights of disabled people. UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has an article 30 which binds governments to take appropriate measures to ensure participation of disable persons equally.
Conclusion
Taking into account the discussion above, one can conclude that stereotyping and taboos still exist in the 21st century regarding disabilities. However, at the same time, there has been major work done by international bodies to lessen the stigma of persons with disabilities.
