United Nations and its latest worries
United Nations and its latest worries
In January this year, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said in a press conference that being the flagbearers of human rights and equality, the UN must lead by example to the whole world. But there are several black sheep under his nose. There have been several scandals in different parts of the world that need the most care from the world's foremost International Nonprofit Organization. The ex-director for UNAIDS in Africa, Michel Sidibe, was convicted of monetary corruption, abuse of his powers as well as sexual harassment six months before his retirement. It does not stop there. The United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ) not only refused investigations to press criminal charges, but Guterres actively blocked further probing into the matter. The same goes for Colin Stewart, the person working with Sidibe as his MINURSO boss in the Western Sahara CITATION Mar19 \l 1033 (Jay, UN boss mired in a sex scandal of Western Sahara mission official, 2019). Stewart was accused of corruption as Head of Staff in the United Nations Office to the African Union by his boss, who has been banned by Guterres personally from entering the UNHQ in New York ever again, adding further black marks to the resume of the Secretary-General. There is no doubt that corruption is a serious problem in the UN, which is a serious concern for an organization that feels itself above the law of every state. So far, it is crystal clear that the major world powers like Britain, France, and the United States simply do not care about the barrage of scandals growing in the UN as long as they do not “get in their way” CITATION COL19 \l 1033 (Colum Lynch, 2019). The same goes for Transparency International, which can be seen actively complaining about Human Rights violations throughout the world. Not even the European Parliament is paying any attention to the Secretary General's exploits. Guterres has indeed set a higher standard of doing corruption as compared to both his predecessors Ban Ki-moon and Kofi Annan CITATION Ant19 \l 1033 (Jay, The UN, Corruption, and Scandals: How Did We Get Here? 2019). His bank accounts have also been probed by the journalists a lot. If this is how things are going to go in only two and a half years into Guterres' term as the United Nations Secretary-General then the organization will soon be facing much darker days in the future. But then again who cares for the wellbeing of a Toothless Tiger.
