IEEE Citation

On This Page On This Page

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) supports academic and research fields, including computer science, engineering, and information technology. It is the most commonly used citation style. They publish magazines, research journals, papers, conference proceedings, and more. They also design standards for different industries.

The IEEE citation style is based on the Chicago Manual of Style, and it's commonly used for technical papers. In addition to providing you with general formatting guidelines, they also have an editorial guide.

The editorial guide will help people format their articles to make sure they follow the publishing requirements set by this organization. In addition, you can avoid plagiarism by using originality detection software and references without any hassle.

For complete guidance of IEEE citation and formatting, read the blog.

What is IEEE Citation Format?

The IEEE citation style is a specialized form of formatting used for papers that have to do with technical subjects and computers. This type of writing has been popularized by students in these respective fields as well because it helps them label their work appropriately when referencing other sources or citations within the paper itself.

The institute, IEEE, helps create and manage many industries and fields standards. Their style guide has a well-defined and structured format for books, journals, papers, and websites. Besides manually making the references and bibliography in your paper citation, you can also use an online citation maker.

Styles of IEEE Format Citation

The IEEE citation style can be used for any type of content, such as books and journals. However, the format does not include the author's name or date published in-text as other styles do.

IEEE citation is different from APA and MLA. The person's name and date of publication are not put in the text, but instead, there is a number in front of it. This number goes with the reference list at the end.

Let us discuss the types of IEEE format citation used. And see how to create such citations:

IEEE In-text Citation

In an IEEE-style paper, it is not necessary that the student or writer add all of these details like author's name, publication date, and reference number in square brackets. Instead, we can use parenthesis for citable citations, which refer back to your complete bibliography at the end with a references list.

Following is the IEEE Citation Style Guideline for in-text citation:

  • Add the citation in the brackets in front of the relevant phrase or sentence. Add it before any punctuation, and make sure that you have added a space before the first bracket.
  • Always list the source and then give it a number. You can always say the number after that to talk about this later.
  • In case you are using multiple sources, name them separately and in their own brackets. For example: [1], [2], or [3] - [6].
  • When citing secondary sources, mention the original source. If you have read William’s work in Jason's book, then refer to the book name.

For Example

“......This point is proven through research [4].”

“Hence provided after experimentation results have deviated as said in the hypothesis [6].”

“William [1] has provided evidence about this in his previous book..”

IEEE Citation Reference List Format

References will be listed at the end of your document. There should be one for every source you used, and it should start with the last letter of the author's last name. Then it should have a number that tells how many times they are referenced in your paper.

While writing the reference page, keep in account the following points:

  • The title of the list will be References. The list will be centered or aligned on the left side at the top of the page.
  • Each reference will be added with a hanging indent. The bracketed number will be flushed to the left side of the paper. This makes it easier for you to find the reference list in order (1,2,3).
  • The author's name is written in the first initial, last name style. For example, Henry john will be written as H. John
  • The main title of an article is written in quotation marks. The name or main title of the journal or book is added in italics.

IEEE Citation for Website

Citations are important for academic papers. When citing an online source, it's essential to be mindful of how you cite your sources and what differentiates one citation from another so that readers know where their information came from without having trouble following along!

Here are some important citation rules to follow when citing a website or an online document:

  • The number of references, initial of your first and last names separated by "M.P." (or initials)
  • The main title is in italics with no quotation marks around it if not handwritten
  • Publisher's name followed by year-date accessed ?[Online]
  • Online sources should include a hyperlink so that readers can easily access them without having trouble finding where they found this information.

For Example:

IEEE Citation Generators Free Online? Worth it or Not?

Citations are an important part of any research paper. Citation generators can help you generate citations for different formats, but not many students know the risks involved in blindly using one without checking all details first!

Make sure to check your generated references with a peer before adding them to your IEEE work so that everyone gets credit where it’s due.

For those of you who are wondering if checking the format is necessary for an online citation maker, then here's why it should be. References that have been created from such websites often go unnoticed by students. This could result in them getting graded incorrectly because their sources were not cited correctly. Thus making sure everything looks right will avoid any future trouble!

Frequently asked questions

Is the IEEE citation the same as Harvard?

In the Harvard style of referencing, you put the author's name and date in parentheses within your work. Then a list with more information on sources goes at the back of your writing. In IEEE style, you use numbers to reference authors when they are mentioned in your paper.
