Culturally, it is universally structured that family and marriage are interconnected. It refers to a setting that involves two adults coming together through a sexual relationship and permanence in living together providing support for the children they have both sired. In the accepted social group of a family, siblings are expected to live together receiving care and love from their parents that are legally bounded. The relationship developed among the siblings has a significant value if compared to the sexual relationships.

Currently, the family structure has become dynamic varying from the traditional definition. It is not possible to term the current family setting as the true description of family form. Drawing from the case of the United States, they are different forms of families that are increasingly developing shifting from the historical narrative. According to Griffiths et al. (2014) research has established that the in reference to the family history, the present phenomenon currently exhibited in the U.S is a depiction of family evolution which took place in the 20th Century towards the 21st changes in the family structure. This is evident with the changing marriage patterns that we can witness today which includes single parenthood, cohabitation, monogamy, polygamy, polyandry and prevalence of bigamy (Griffiths et al., 2014). It is apparent that gone are the days dominated by nuclear families (mom, dad + one or more kids) in the United States. Today, we are witnessing varying family settings as the society has become more tolerable to these dynamics.

To better understand the changing dynamics of family and in reference to group identities and to adjust to the prevalent changes is to remain open minded some times. This is because we can borrow from the different relationships we have through our social interactions and being adaptive to the occurring changes. The best way to remain interested in creating better families toward better relationships is by learning the different family types and this will set us on a path of acceptance.

The article on ‘How To Help ‘Tweens And Teens Manage Social Conflict’ was recently published in the New York Times. The article highlights the issue of bullying that is pertinent to teenagers nowadays and how it may be resolved with the help of family, teachers, and counseling. Bullying is stated as the inability of the students or children to defend themselves against social injuries. The article suggests that social media generates conflicts that further result into bullying CITATION Dam19 \l 1033 (Damour, 2019). However, it can be dispensed by enabling teens to fight their battles.

Traditionally bullying is looked upon into categories of victims and the bullies. But particularly, in this case, the structural-functionalism would recognize the role of the schools and the family institutions in the way they deal and handle bullying. These systems as reflected in the article, are continuously advised to enable children by evoking responses and handling the situation on their own. The children shall be encouraged to handle situations by applying adaptive strategies to manage these issues with the help of parents, teachers, and counselors CITATION Dam19 \l 1033 (Damour, 2019).

Social Conflict the theory states that the conflict is inevitable in this age. The theory is a strong proponent of acknowledging the inequalities that are persistent in society and similarly school. There are unhealthy behavior roles of tweens such as bulldozer, doormat, and doormat with spikes that result in conflict and bullying. Teaching reactions to conflict in bullying minimizes its impact on the Tweens and teenagers. Being a pillar to defend yourself is the most effective coached counseling.

Symbolic interaction reflects upon the ideals of experience of people, reality shaping behaviors of people and how does how is one situation perceived differently from different people. The girl felt left out as she was not invited to her friend’s party, she could have responded with passive-aggressiveness, being a doormat with spikes. This perception of being left out may shape a behavior reality within the girl CITATION Dam19 \l 1033 (Damour, 2019). Instead of responding on social media, she could talk to her friend in person and resolve if there was any animosity brewing between them. This would reduce the psychological and emotional impact on the girl. And similarly on many other tweens and teenagers in such situations.

Deviant behavior is needed for the proper functioning of the society because these tendencies reflect normal, intrinsic behavior of a person. The urge and motivation to achieve something, when it is not provided or attained by right means, the sense of survival and achievement moves a person to adopt a deviant path. Seeing a person being punished due to an act of deviance tends to reinforce the things which are either acceptable or unacceptable by society. For example, if nobody commits something which can be categorized as a crime, how will the rules be declared and implemented.

Talking about the sociological aspects, Strain theory explains the reason for people committing a crime. According to this theory, when people are unable to achieve the cultural goals which they are exposed to, they tend to achieve them by adopting criminal ways (Kendall, 2019). The famous Social bond theory gives the idea that when a person’s ties with society are weakened, they are more vulnerable to criminal activities. For example, 5% of students of a college class who do not get a job feel disconnected from society and then they decide to take the possessions of others by robbing.

The criminal justice system is comprised of the network of law enforcement institutions and is responsible for administrating justice. This is very common in our societies and as in this system, the offender is penalized to compensate for the harm which he inflicted on someone else. For example, if a person is convicted of committing murder, he will be arrested and given punishment according to the law. While restorative justice is an opposite system that ensures the rehabilitation of the offender through reconciliation and counseling. The example of this system is the face to face meeting of offender and victim in the presence of an expert mediator.

Social control is the influential ability of any element in a social life which is capable of maintaining life in certain patterns. Social control is the driving force that makes people do a thing which they would not do otherwise. Also, an individual may abstain from doing something which is not accepted by society.

Social fabric is the demographics of a particular area that defines its wealth, ethnicity, regional values, education, and employment role. Social fabrics of a particular area are very important in determining the social aspects of society. For example, the social fabric affecting a newly opened restaurant at any place is different as compared to others because of the variety in the aspects mentioned above.

Drug is any substance that effects the physical functioning in some way. Drugs are used for a special purpose like reducing pain after some illness or surgery, also used for achieving some self-pleasure, feeling, or psychological reasons. Conversely, deviant behavior is a normal, learned response from social, economic, cultural, and political conditions. In society, social groups create deviance by making the rules, whose violation makes them outsiders CITATION EdK13 \l 1033 (Ed Kaplan, 2013). Furthermore, drug use may result due to early antisocial behavior, problems in school, weakened family relationships, criminal or drug-using social bonding. Social stigmatization refers to a severe form of social condemnation of a person, often because of some particular trait such as drug abuse, which characterizes their deviance from social norms. Stigma may be attached to a person’s physical distortion, mental illness, or identification with a particular religion, ideology, race, and ethnicity. Therefore, stigmatization loses a person’s identity from society if he is expected incompetent to satisfying the role necessities of social communication.

Addiction is a long-lasting, worsening disorder created by obsessive use of drugs, ignoring its bad consequences. Furthermore, it is considered a brain disorder as involves purposeful changes to brain circuits that are involved in reward, motivation, memory and learning, stress, and self-control. In addition, some drugs are legal because they create no harm to Alcohol and tobacco. Some drugs are illegal because they cause serious harm to a person’s mental and physical health. Common illegal drugs are cocaine, heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), steroids, marijuana. If an Illegal drug is used for a long time, it may cause death. Furthermore, race, gender, and class also affect the substance abuse rate. Minority groups and people of different colors in a community may suffer highly from substance abuse disorders due to difficulties in retrieving care. Moreover, social, environmental, and financial issues are barriers in their treatment.

Normally, in an effort to reduce drug addiction, doctors cut down their drug intake and sometimes leaving patients to suffer many problems and pain. Patients normally feel temptation, frustration, uncertain that how they will manage to quit that addiction and psychological problems CITATION Mor16 \l 1033 (Morgen, 2016).

In a society, substance abuse is not a single person problem as it creates effects on other persons of the society i.e., individuals, friends, and their families. Drug abused person neglects his responsibilities like career, children’s education, health, or financial security. Finally, to eliminate it from society, we must involve the health department, antinarcotics, social groups, civil society, law enforcement agencies, and many more.

We see Gloria in the Modern Family trying to acclimate to the American way of life while remembering how things used to be back home in Columbia time and again. We have Raj Koothrappali in the Big Bang Theory, who is too shy for words. Yet, his parents back home believe that he is spending his time drinking and living the high life. The Guatemalan Florencia from the Pitch Perfect series has a one-liner that sums up the situation perfectly, stating, “Why do Americans ever leave America?” while walking through the rain in Copenhagen, Denmark. However, the culture shock felt by Rachel Chu from Crazy Rich Asians is one that the people from the states can relate to as well. She gets a chance to go back home, the land that she belongs to, yet everything there is unfamiliar to her. She speaks Chinese, knows the customs and traditions of her land, yet everything is completely foreign to her. As her month said, “You may look Chinese, you may speak Chinese, but in your heart, you are not one of them.” This raises the question regarding the definition of culture itself. Is the definition defined by the culture that you grew up in or the culture you are native to?

One way to look at this would be through the dramaturgical theory. Developed by the sociologist called Erving Goffman, the concept states that life is like a never-ending play where people are like actors. We spend most of our life center stage, thus we take on queues from our surroundings and follow a narrative. We play the role assigned to us and play it well. The American society is facing worst kind of crisis because of national student loan. Education, of course, is a big asset to any student's life that is appreciated over time and helps him throughout his life. The people with low-earnings look forward to taking loans, but it becomes difficult for them to return the debt. The student loan is a current issue that affects the students, especially those with low-income families. Many among these students are in debt and are being crushed as they are unable to increase their earnings, and they become defaulters. There are many systematic issues with education in the country. Some of the major issues are functional illiteracy, school violence, school discipline issues, soaring costs of education, racial discrimination, and underrepresentation of minorities. The rulers of humankind are basically the teachers who transform their skills into the learners to make them develop higher thinking skills and become capable and responsible members of society.

The functions that society intends the institutions to perform are known as manifest functions. They include quality education, values, character build up, competitiveness, health and fitness, leadership, and discipline. The functions that are not intended but come about, even so, are the latent functions. These include socializing, peer pressure, discrimination, and political integration.

An equal society can be developed by fixing the problems in education system. The difference between upper and lower class will be finished. The social and racial divisions will be removed, and the educational system will prove to be equal for everyone.

Over the past years, technology has completely revolutionized our world. Modern technology has generated some amazing tools and resources which are providing great assistance in our day to day life. The modes of communications have changed rapidly over the past twenty years. Telephones and letters have been replaced by smartphones, Facebook, Twitter and all the social websites. More than forty percent of the population of the world is using the great technology of the internet. Three hundred and forty thousand tweets are sent per minute. Field of media has also progressed a lot. In past years people used to have CRT televisions, and now OLED technology televisions are being used. The concepts of Artificial intelligence have revolutionized the field of medicine by introducing surgeon robots, which are more accurate than human surgeons in performing operations (Dorst, Cross, 2001).

The major boundary that is being faced in the development of modern technology is the lack of support from the staff in the implementation and usage of modern technology. The other major boundary is budget. Obviously, modern tools are expensive to buy and installing them in an organization requires a lot of investment. The money is not only required for installing or buying modern products, but it is also required in training of the staff regarding the understanding of the installed technology.

One of the major global threat is the extreme weather events like storm or flood. These events are unpredictable, but if we use modern techniques of machine learning and artificial intelligence, we can easily predict the upcoming weather events. If we remove the above-mentioned boundaries then in the future, we can easily see the activities of oceans and seas and can easily take preemptive measures before the disaster. Modern technology will help us in saving a lot of precious lives. Many countries are using the technology of predictions, but the boundaries faced by the organizations stop further development in machine learning.

Yes, there is a certain truth to the fact that certain meanings and societal positions are often attached to people that belong to a particular race. The example of Ms. Rodriguez is somewhat enlightening. However, this does not mean that there are no chances for upward mobility in the American Society. There have always been people that have managed to shatter the stereotypes attached to their races. Take the example of Shahid "Shad" Khan, an engineering student that got his first job as a dishwasher at a small restaurant close to his university. He was a Pakistani, belonging to a country from South Asia with not enough money to last a night in the United States. Now, he is the first Asian to own a football team in the US. Another example is that of Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google. He is an Indian with a humble background as well. True, society has attached certain expected positions to Asian, but we should note that hard work can conquer all, as is apparent from the above-cited examples.

The main problem here is not the segregation of cultures, but their drive to assimilate themselves in the American Society. It would be better that we acculturate in society, as diversity brings the ability to tolerate one another, which is always helpful for the development of society. I am a fan of the Brazilian culture and would like that Carnival would also occur here in the United States as it does in Rio. Also, I cannot stress this enough that everything is not the fault of the government. We need to recognize who we can utilize the tenants of the established system of capitalism, but in a positive way. As for the argument that capitalism is established on inequality, I would like to stress that the whole society is based on the principle of inequality to motivate people to work. The success of one person is always in the failure of another, at least in comparative terms.

The myth of Model Minority has always been there in the US. From the start of the introduction of the African Americans in the southern states to the start of immigration of different ethnic groups, the main aim of the Whites has always been to subdue the races that have come to the United States for making a name for themselves. The "authorities" have always tried to practice assimilation of all the races. Our governments need to realize that there can be no island of peace in a land of disparity. All the minorities in the US must be taken out of poverty instead of practicing the concept of model minority and teaching them to be content in their modest access to resources that are barely enough to survive. Also, the definition of disability should be used on humanitarian grounds rather than political ones. We cannot declare misbehaving black children as disables.

Although many of my fellows would disagree from this point, I still believe that sexual attraction and orientation has taken such a central position in our lives that we have simply started to stop thinking about other problems that have started to affect the future of humanity. True, this discussion is intended to promote tolerance in the society, but my point here is that these desires should not have absolute command of our senses to such an extent that we lose the importance of everything else in the society. On the other hand, I agree with you that minorities in the US are being suppressed systematically. But I believe that this problem can easily be solved by the introduction of laws that suppressed these legalized practices of racism in our society. Otherwise, we may experience another civil war soon due to these practices that I may term as "Neo-slavery".

The New York Times published Salam's article on March 19, 2019, which gives an overview of patriarchy and the reasons this phenomenon persists even after many movements appeared against it (Canning, Charlotte. N.p.). Salam introduces a newly published book Why Does Patriarchy Persist co-authored by Carol Gilligan and Naomi Snider in this article.

I chose this article because it is a recent national news article that redefines the facets of traditional patriarchy and points out the key features which help patriarchy to survive till now. The writer argues that patriarchy resurrects like the bad terminator in the movie Terminator-2 who recovers again every time he is culminated. She notes that this comparison has been made by the authors of the book.

The article relates to the section of the text in the sense that it discusses the structured women subjugation. She quotes the author(s) who argue that the core cause of structured and organized women subjugation when two genders are taught differently and stereotypes about genders are created at an early age of offspring. For instance, a boy is taught never to cry and a girl is taught never to show assertiveness as aggressiveness suits to men only and women should be mild, soft, and receptive (Salam, Maya. N.p.). Here starts the personal difference that leads one gender (man) to become an active actor of society and the other gender (woman) a passive one. In a broader scenario, women become dependent on men economically and men, in turn, occupy them for intercourse and reproduction. This is the very concept discussed in the text that this gender-based social class developed as the result of the men’s quest to have authority over women to use them for sexual intercourse and reproduction.

Challenge and celebration as thousands mark Charlotte’s third women’s march (2019) by ANN DOSS HELMS and JOE MARUSAK

The Charlotte Observer, a local newspaper of North Carolina State, published this news article on January 26, 2019. This article reports the third annual Women United March in the State. This article reveals that women are again on roads to demand their equal rights (Hall, C. Margaret. N.p.). Many March activists have been quoted in the article who complain that women are still facing subjugation and the social structure is still patriarchal.

I chose this article for the reason that it is the most recent news article from local news which reports development in the explanation of the concept discussed in the text and it also overshadows that women emergence in 2020 March can be considerable. Moreover, this article provides information according to the title of this assignment. The writer quotes a marcher Hill who addresses the masses saying “Today we hope that you will listen to and learn from the diversity of perspectives” (Helms, Ann Doss. N.p.).

The article relates to the concept discussed in the text in a way that it reveals that the historical patriarchal structure is still in place despite being challenged by women. The part of the text reveals that women subjugation has its roots in history and they were subjugated by men after seizing their property rights and economic independence that led to their permanent dependence on men. The article reveals that women have realized this injustice and now they are out to claim their just rights. Helms quotes Peña who disregards historical gender-based discrimination and claims that: “We are one race, the mixed-race, and we are going to prevail” (Helms, Ann Doss. N.p.). Doss Helms acknowledges the text’s statement that women have been being subjugated unjustly for centuries and concludes her article with the statement of a notable speaker Rabbi Judy Schindler: “The journey to justice is not easy. There will be days when you will walk away in tears” (Helms, Ann Doss. N.p.).

Media has a strong influence on human behavior especially children are more vulnerable to the impact of media. The excessive use of media affected the social skills of children as well as elders. However, the younglings need to expose more to the external environment for mental growth and personality development (Lillard et al., 2015). Nowadays social media addiction changed the behaviors of people of the United States of America. People spend most of the free time engaged on social media and less likely aware of their surroundings. Children and some elders devote more time to the violent games that caused many social and psychological problems. Such as, aggressive behavior toward peers and other groups, declined the socialization of kids and early aged youth spend more time in games which made them socially isolated. Watching television has specific positive outcomes such as educating the community, as it disperses knowledge about science, technology, sports, politics, economy, and fashion industry. Television also developed stress, aggression, and negativity among the people. Nevertheless, media is positively correlated with the rise in rapes cases and sexual desires, violence in children, smoking, and alcohol.

In the USA and other regions people are found highly addicted to media, which kept people distracted from healthy activities and essential tasks. People are busy on their mobile phone in public places using the internet and avoid to talk to other people. It has adversely affected the social skills of the community.

Global forces have always born a significant role in shaping the economy and politics of the US. According to me, the biggest global force that is affecting the economy and politics is the issue of global warming and environmental degradation. No matter what the impact of the global forces on the politics or economy is, the ultimate sufferers of it would be the general population. We have seen severe hurricanes and tornadoes ripping apart land stretched over miles, heatwave gripping our cities, and harsh winters as a result of changing the global pattern. These are the things that affect us directly.

In my opinion, the television show Gene Simmons Family Jewels did not reflect typical American household because the ostentatious lifestyle is not afforded to the majority of the US citizens. The increased divorce rate, women playing an active role in the society, and change in attitude towards marriage is what is wrong with American household today. Religion and education must be practiced to have a positive future.

There are multiple side effects that are associated with drug abuse. One of the most important of all these is the liver dysfunction; over abuse of any drug can damage the liver beyond repair and eventually cause it to fail to work completely (Volkow, Baler, Compton, & Weiss, 2014). Age is not a number which depicts the biological functioning or physiological changes in the body during life, but it is also the product of sociocultural norms and standards which are applied to the stages of life. With the advancement in life, high-quality healthcare is provided to humanity, and this has prolonged human life expectancy. The increased age has outnumbered the death rate; hence the rate of older people is more in society. Due to this higher number of aging adults in the society, it consumes the workplace, hospitals and many rights of the younger lot. The process of aging is hugely dependent on collective aspects of the society, like race, class, gender and other factors. The social policies devised by the government for older people like Medicaid and Medicare are beneficial since they provide social privilege to the older population and do all the coverage of healthcare on behalf of low-income people, especially older adults. Therefore, this essay will explore and give a brief account of social variables and policies that influence the process of aging from a sociological point of view.

Study of aging is known as gerontology, and when it is studied in sociological perspective, it is known as social gerontology. Aging is a biological, social and psychological phenomenon or process and it is inevitable to occur to human beings. The changes or alterations of the older people's life start from the time of retirement; either it is a healthy retirement or retirement due to the deteriorating health of the older population. The theoretical framework of sociology explains the factor of aging according to three perspectives. The disengagement theory suggests that becoming isolated from society is a natural part of the aging process. The other theory related to activity says that higher activity levels and involvement in the society s crucial to a healthy and happy life, thus active old people will be more happy and prosperous for society. So it is essential for older people to have employment which less hectic and also having hobbies at this age helps one to stay active. Moreover, there is continuity theory which suggests that due to specific choices made by older adults for remaining consistent internally and externally keeps them active and stable in older age. Therefore, many older people don’t take retirement in older age or resume jobs elsewhere.

Retirement is a social process which occurs to every individual who reaches a certain age or has completed a specified period on their job. Retirement is the bliss of the modern era; before this time, there was no such concept of retirement and people used to work up until their health was completed ruined (Czaja, 2015). Retirement completely alters the life of individuals by financial, social and psychological ways. After retirement, even when few people are paid pensions, they face an economic crisis. It affects older people psychologically and socially because there remains no daily activity for them which make them feel isolative.

The principal factor is the financial well-being of older people which is affected right after retirement. Therefore the primary source of income for older people is mostly government, i.e., social security, pensions, assets and sometimes their children. Social security is one of the most utilized income ways by the older population; 86 % of the people who are above sixty years receive this security check every month. The eligibility criterion for these individuals is to complete at least 40 earned credits that are ten years of work requirement.

Correspondingly, the social security is based on the highest earning years, i.e., 35 years is the average. These income sources affect the life choices of older people because they have to manage everything according to the supported money or remaining savings they have. Likewise, there are many issues related to health, economy, and society when a person enters into old age, so they are vulnerable to the economic crisis (Hooyman, 2014). Mainly, people with poor or racial background and no savings are more prone to this crisis.

To cater to such situations, many older adults are working even with deteriorating health. The current trends depict that there would be an increase in employment in the coming 20-40 years in the elderly population to improve their quality of life. This continued employment is their necessity, to afford healthcare bills, life commodities and even sometimes to support their children. Above all, the retirement dulls and bores the life of older people; also their already declining health falls more, so they need a recreational change which is provided through a healthy work environment, where they could keep themselves busy but less hectic. The baby boomer population of our society is seen working in this modern era; they are now more towards continued employment (Halvorsen, &Emerman, 2013). This also happened due to increased healthcare facilities and a lower rate of old age diseases and life expectancy. The trend has been set for the older population to get employed by encore-friendly communities.

The employment patterns influence the options of retirement for women because there is an increase in older workers in organizations and this increases the chances of gender inequality at the workplace. As experienced men are preferable than the women of lower experience and age, this leads towards lower employment options for women. Due to the demographic change or shift, the rate of older women population and minorities in the organizations is expected to increase at a specific rate. According to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), it is not allowed to restrict anyone regardless of their age from doing the job. According to this law, it is not illegal to favor an older age person over the younger one. This makes lesser employment opportunities for the younger lot.

Old age requires healthcare facilities, medications, tools, and machinery (e.g., oxygen cylinders, Bp apparatus, and glucometers. Some physically disabled older people require diuretic living conditions, i.e., caregivers at home or nursing homes (Blanchard, 2014). The income matters a lot in older age as to fulfill their basic requirements of life it is necessary for them to have enough money to at least cater their basic needs, i.e., home rent and bills. For this matter, there are housing options for older people, e.g., community-based long-term healthcare, assisted living residences and nursing homes. The community based long term care services are the home-based health care provided to the patients of older age (Hooyman, 2014). Whereas, assisted living residences are for a shorter period with full healthcare benefits just like nursing homes. But nursing homes are an advanced stage of resident livings.

Housing is a structurally separate and independent location which serves the place as residence to one or more individuals. The living arrangements for older citizens are diversified according to the need of these people. There are heterogenic arrangements, for instance, demographic, cultural, health, and socio-economic characteristics. By knowing these factors related to living arrangements for elderly people, it can also contribute to the subsidizing of the detection of poor or low-privileged people, which should be then prioritized for primary healthcare by professionals and nurses.

The social policies devised by the government for older people like Medicaid and Medicare are beneficial since they provide social privilege to the older population and do all the coverage of healthcare on behalf of low-income people, especially older adults. Such that these acts provide coverage to disabled and primarily poor adults. Likewise, the Older American Act (OAA) is a governmental law which promotes the wellbeing of older people in America. It aims at providing comprehensive healthcare services to aging adults. This act supports a range of community services, housing services, nutrition programs, and legal services, along with the support and preventives for old or aging people who get abused by society, their children and healthcare facilitators (Hooyman, 2014).

The education system in America suffers from problems of inequality, dearth of resources, lack of focus on innovation, narrow syllabus, incompetent administration as well as chronic absenteeism. The U.S Commission on Civil Rights reports that the highest poverty districts receive, on average, 1200 dollars less than the districts with least number of poor people. Education serves to bring people out of poverty but this statistic shows that poor children in America have a lower chance of availing the benefits of education because of the lower funding.

After the Great Recession, education budgets have been slashed, severely affecting the education system of America. The main cuts have been applied to ‘formula’ funding which is the principal source of funding for elementary and secondary schools, thereby hitting primary education the hardest. These cuts hit students as well as teachers who are deprived of salary hikes and other perks, leading to an inevitable decline in quality of education.

Another shocking issue is the de facto segregation of schools, not just in terms of student ratio but distribution of resources as well. The law states that no form of discrimination will be applied in access to education but the reality is different as schools in suburbs with African American students have a remarkably lesser amount of facilities available than their counterparts present in urban areas with a majority white population.

The syllabus is also a major issue as the focus is more on gaining skills in one particular area and finding employment in that field rather than focusing on acquiring knowledge and learning how to learn. The lack of a broad knowledge base leads to difficulties in people’s lives later on because they find it difficult to adapt to new situations.

Incompetent administration is perhaps the most shocking issue of all and it is also the one highlighted by Michelle Rhee as soon as she took over. She found that undistributed school material had been stacked up in a warehouse, when it is sorely needed elsewhere in schools. This leads teachers to either compromise on the learning experience or spend out of their own pockets to purchase such items.

Coleman conducted his research by considering the differences in the Intelligent Quotient (IQ) and emotional intelligence of the students. His purpose was to identify how these two factors influence the performance of the students. He also stressed in determining the achievement gap among learners. This was based on the concepts of IQ and emotional intelligence. Coleman through his study emphasized on between school effects in the American education. The purpose was to uncover factors that have negatively influenced the academic performance of the students. Coleman stressed the educational inequalities existing in the American education system. The factors that affected the quality of education included religion, background and ethnicities. The assessment of the verbal and non-verbal skills was used for identifying the gap in learning. The findings revealed that students that belonged to black backgrounds had limited education opportunities. This undermined their possibilities to build adequate academic competency.

The study of Coleman obtained data from 4,000 schools that was based on the views of sixty thousand teachers who filled the forms on student competency. The findings of the survey research indicate that 80 per cent of the white kids were attending schools while only 10 percent of the black children managed to learn at schools. This exhibited a wider difference between the black and white community. The results also depict that whites and Asian American kids scored high on the assessments compared to the black kids.

Kozol conducted his research by surveying schools across thirty neighborhoods in America. special logic was used for identifying the schools for the research, However, he chose the schools knew the teachers, ministers and principals. His findings uncovered the inequalities prevailing in the education system. The results of the comparisons among schools depict that the black children encounter difficulties in education because they get fewer opportunities compared to the whites. While in conducting a research survey it is advised to choose the targeted population randomly for avoiding the probability of bias. Compared to Coleman's technique there is a high degree of bias in Kozol’s research methodology. Although Kozol chose different neighborhoods for conducting research and targeting people from different regions. But he failed to eliminate researcher bias that might have affected the validity of the results. The findings of Kozol’s study also reveals that health problem is another factor that undermines the academic performance of the black students. It is thus important to provide them with better health and learning opportunities.

Coleman selected a larger sample size by inquiring sixty thousand teachers from 4,000 schools. This reflects that he has covered an adequate sample size that provides more practical results. The comparison of the two research methods depicts that Coleman has used a reliable sample because he selected the targeted population randomly. The results of the two studies exhibit similarities because they lead to a common conclusion that unequal educational opportunities undermined the academic performance of black students. Their educational competency is evaluated on the basis of verbal and subject performance.
