This paper is aimed at reflecting upon the chapter IV of the Collins’ (2002) groundbreaking piece of literature; MAMMIES, MATRIARCHS AND OTHER CONTROLLING IMAGES. He attempted to explain various themes in this chapter however one of his ideas compelled me to reflect my thoughts, feelings and opinions; in a society where one group is dominant to the other, objectification of subordinate group is a must. He argued that black working women in American society are treated as “objects” particularly in the workplace because subjects are free to define their realities, possess desired identities and name their history themselves, which is not true in case of African- American working women. I personally agree his argument because I have inspected various instances where black women were treated like objects; both in attitudinal and behavioral terms. For example, they are made to work like heavy-duty machines that might not have “fatigue” element at all or as if they are mere extensions of their machines. Moreover, when it comes to be professional with African- American women in the field setting, instead of calling them with specific professional names, they are called as “girls” which is something ethically more jaded than treating them like robots. Treating black women as children, inexperienced workers and treating them like they are non- existent are some real-life depictions of race- driven- stereotyping which undoubtedly threatens their sense of self-concept and develops imminent identity crisis. It must also be noted that this lopsided attitude is not necessarily learned rather this thing has become so much incorporated into the culture that it runs throughout the generations aversively and persistently both at personal and institutional level. The need of the hour is to make practical attempts in mitigating the negative attitudes of majority towards African American working women because they not only strive hard to give better life to their children but also nurture their self-esteem that is destined to shatter nearly every day.
