The prominent reason for Texas to leave American Union in 1861 was the belief of Texans that the political change in government would weaken their institution of slavery. This happened in response of north that denied to return escaped slaves to their masters in south. Texans had considered secession as unconstitutional and convinced them to join confederacy for becoming part of a strong military power. The unconstitutional role of state became prominent when citizens of south were excluded. Texas also realized that the immense power of the government is adequate for destroying the instructions and slaveholding states. It was easy for other territories to war upon lives and property of the southerners. Threats of mob law, violence, unfair property snatching alarmed Texans and became the major reasons for their separation. The people of the territory were also convinced that the government has failed to give required protection for the lives and properties. The property and lives of the people in northern states were safe that portrayed the unjust role of the government. Indian savages posed high risks to the safety and stability of the southerners.
Economy is the second important reason for Texas to leave American Union because they lacked adequate opportunities of trade and industrial gains. In these conditions tariffs played negative role as they impacted the trade of southern merchants. This made them believe that joining confederacy will provide them better economic opportunities and they would be able to progress. The belief that remaining an independent state will minimize opportunities of economic growth convinced them to leave union. Joining confederacy will allow them to become stable state. The people claimed that in north the merchants have better chances of business, trade and earning revenues.
