Subject: American Revolution
Dear [Receiver’s Name]
The conditions in the 13 colonies of British have worsened and there are clear indications that war between the British loyalists and colonists will break out. The war now seems inevitable and this revolutionary war, I fear, would compel the British empire to sign the declaration of independence with the 13 colonies. I, being a loyalist to British, am writing you a letter to make you aware of certain things which I will discuss one by one in the following sections.
Reason to Stay Loyal to the British King
The imminent war is, in most respects, is a civil war, and neither the independence was the goal when colonization of America began. We, the loyalists, are loyal to our king, and we bear in our mind what had happened in the British revolution just over a century before, and the repercussions for those who had opposed the king ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"IfUg25fI","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Foner)","plainCitation":"(Foner)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1207,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"itemData":{"id":1207,"type":"book","title":"Give Me Liberty! We have been living in this area without rebel influence, or somewhere near to a British garrison or fort that they depended on for protection. Besides, our business relies upon British patronage, and we are of the view that rebellion would be doomed.
What is the American Revolution?
We, the loyalists, firmly believe ourselves to be Englishmen and loyal to the crown and that once Britain won the war, we’d be welcomed for being loyal. Patriots referred to us as Tories, Royalists or King’s Men and we are being treated quite badly by the Patriots. We, the loyalists, do not see the war as a revolution but rather a civil war or rebel uprising and feet that England would crush it and it would be over with quickly. The American Revolution is not as much motivated by the interests of ordinary colonists as it is by colonists whose business interests would be served by revolution(Foner).
What exactly is Boston Tea Party About?
Most of the people in England perceive Boston Tea Party as a protest against the British tax on tea. However, it was actually a reaction/protest by a small number of colonists about the effective removal of the British tax on tea. Think about it, why would colonists disguise themselves and dump the tea instead of stealing it? Do you think they were too moral to steal but wanted to make some “we’ll stop drinking tea” statement? No, the number of participants was too small to make any effective statement like that. The British made it only legal to import British tea. And at first, they had a tax on it. So, one enterprising colonist started smuggling in tea and making money by selling it cheaper than the taxed British stuff. But then the British tried to stop his illegal operation by effectively removing the tax-cutting the price of British tea so that this “illegal entrepreneur” can not compete ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"8Q5iIGwV","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Foner)","plainCitation":"(Foner)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1207,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"itemData":{"id":1207,"type":"book","title":"Give Me Liberty! The purpose of the Boston Tea Party was to destroy the competition’s product (the price of which have recently been reduced in a way rather equivalent to getting rid of the tax).
The Reality of Sons of Liberty
Sons of Liberty have become famous after the Boston massacre, however, British soldiers opened fire in self-defense. Sons of liberty are extremely controversial, and many Bostonians would consider them a true manifestation of radicalism. They are a rowdy, fanatical and often violent bunch, and their leader, Samuel Adams, is rumored to have only opposed the British because they are disrupting his smuggling efforts. if the Sons of Liberty are good at one thing, it is spreading their propaganda. They organize committees of correspondence across the northern colonies to spread disinformation and exaggerations of British atrocities to the people in order to gain support. Most people, including those in Boston, have not actually seen the Boston massacre, and rumors were spreading rapidly throughout the city that had no basis in fact ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"0YEVFWKQ","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Foner)","plainCitation":"(Foner)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1207,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"itemData":{"id":1207,"type":"book","title":"Give Me Liberty! The Sons of Liberty take advantage of this by transforming the incident from a series of escalations leading up to murder to an example of brutality from a militarized police force.
New taxation in the Colonies
The tax really isn’t as taxing as the propagandists made out. We have as much representation, and a lower tax rate, than the other colonies. We have accepted that we want to continually encroach into Indian territory against British edicts and then demand protection from the British army then we should then pay more towards funding the army. we realize that getting rich by trading with a country that was at war with their mother country might not be the smartest long-term plan ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"vfBMOlD2","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Foner)","plainCitation":"(Foner)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1207,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"itemData":{"id":1207,"type":"book","title":"Give Me Liberty! Ideas in Europe
The American Revolution is not a ‘revolution’, and it is not particularly ‘anti-Monarchist’. One group of privileged white men fights another, a British civil war on the land of the native. And most of the people fighting on the American side do not have ‘anti-monarchy’ ideals, many of them are aware that they are primarily fighting a parliament rather than a monarch ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"xLWEZAM3","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Foner)","plainCitation":"(Foner)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":1207,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jsvqEXt1/items/UUSDXFWQ"],"itemData":{"id":1207,"type":"book","title":"Give Me Liberty! The monarchy is not a big issue for the colonists fighting on the American side.
American, in their propagandist way, create a mythology around it which bears little resemblance to the truth. They like to portray it as a world-changing event on a par with the French revolution (thus the deliberate changing of the term ‘American war of independence’ to American Revolution). but in fact, the slaves in the USA will stay enslaved and the natives will remain unenfranchised. The plight of both those groups will be worsened after the British had left.
