This anxiety, this distress leads the entourage to adopt an ambivalent behavior: a desire to stop suffering and care, a revolt at the lack of medical care. This behavior, which can put the caregiver in difficulty, is in fact a projection of the suffering of the families (Gedaly-Duff, 2005).

The nurse can help the family through this painful step. His role is not to supplement their presence with the patient, but to promote his quality of life and help the family to better show their support. Relatives often tend to hide their feelings in front of the patient and even between them. Yet they go through emotional stages similar to those that the patient experiences, and they are often unable to cope with reality. They would need to express their fears and anger, but they cannot. The nurse will try to give time, express interest in the patient's relatives and receive their confidences. The nurse will need a lot of discernment and tact to accommodate these confidences without creating clashes.
