Medical Terminology:
Every profession and field are different from others based on some unique characteristics. In medical framework, medical terminology is the specialized language to understand the disease, symptoms, and their practices. Medical terminology is not the language that we learn to communicate with others. These are the words that help to learn and recognize new medical terms in future. Medical terminology is the source that provides great details about the human body in a precise way. There is no requirement of using long paragraphs or sentence to describe the condition instead only one word can explain the disorder, condition, and treatment. I agree with the statement that it is like learning a new language as it has its own vocabulary and the terms to make a sentence that is understandable by other individuals. At first, the word seems complicated and strange, however, while learning one can understand that it is the most logical language that each term can be broken into the simple and basic component parts to know the meaning. Greeks were the founders of modern medicine, therefore, seventy-five percent of medical terminology are in Greek and Latin. Like a new language, it is impossible to learn complete medical terminology however, the person can analyze the word's parts to figure out the meaning for interpretation ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"8052fDw6","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Park et al., 2014)","plainCitation":"(Park et al., 2014)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":659,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/JAV3R4FE"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/JAV3R4FE"],"itemData":{"id":659,"type":"article-journal","title":"Positive Psychology and Physical Health","container-title":"American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine","page":"200-206","volume":"10","issue":"3","source":"PubMed Central","abstract":"Positive psychology is the scientific study of a healthy and flourishing life. The goal of positive psychology is to complement and extend the traditional problem-focused psychology that has proliferated in recent decades. Positive psychology is concerned with positive psychological states (eg, happiness), positive psychological traits (eg, talents, interests, strengths of character), positive relationships, and positive institutions. We describe evidences of how topics of positive psychology apply to physical health. Research has shown that psychological health assets (eg, positive emotions, life satisfaction, optimism, life purpose, social support) are prospectively associated with good health measured in a variety of ways. Not yet known is whether positive psychology interventions improve physical health. Future directions for the application of positive psychology to health are discussed. We conclude that the application of positive psychology to health is promising, although much work remains to be done.","DOI":"10.1177/1559827614550277","ISSN":"1559-8276","note":"PMID: 30202275\nPMCID: PMC6124958","journalAbbreviation":"Am J Lifestyle Med","author":[{"family":"Park","given":"Nansook"},{"family":"Peterson","given":"Christopher"},{"family":"Szvarca","given":"Daniel"},{"family":"Vander Molen","given":"Randy J."},{"family":"Kim","given":"Eric S."},{"family":"Collon","given":"Kevin"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2014",9,26]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Park et al., 2014). For instance, word Leukocytes can be broken down in different parts where "Leuk/o” means white, “cytes” means cells and by combining them the meaning becomes white blood cells. Another word is Cyanosis which mean blue skin due to the lack of oxygen. In the word “Cyan/o” means blue and “-osis" means condition. The examples show that medical terminology is not presented in a typical way by which we learn different words. It requires the time and practice to understand the term as much as you can.
National Institute of Health Disorders Resource:
In medical terminology, every word has special meaning and story for its formation. Various words represent the meaning of the disease, its symptom, and treatment while few disorders are named after the person who identified them some examples are given below.
Alzheimer’s disease AD is the disease that indicates the non-reversible brain disorder in old age. People in later life experience confusion and memory loss which gradually change the personality and the behavior of the patient ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"QgdJbRS1","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}All Disorders | National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke,\\uc0\\u8221{} n.d.)","plainCitation":"(“All Disorders | National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke,” n.d.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":649,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/X6XZJ8NJ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/X6XZJ8NJ"],"itemData":{"id":649,"type":"webpage","title":"All Disorders | National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke","URL":"https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/All-Disorders?title=&title%20beginswith=A","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",6,21]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“All Disorders | National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke,” n.d.). The word Alzheimer cannot be broken into the part as it is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer who identified the changes in brain tissue in 1906.
Cerebral hypoxia is the disorder that explains the condition where brain get an insufficient amount of oxygen even when the blood pressure is normal. Factors including drowning, choking, head trauma, and suffocation can lead to cerebral hypoxia. In the term “Cerebral hypoxia”, cerebr means brain, al means pertaining to, hypo means below normal, and oxia means oxygen. By combining the words, we can understand the meaning of the disease easily.
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a disorder that is caused by antibodies. APS indicates that the immune cell system that is responsible for fighting with viruses or bacteria mistakenly attack body organs and tissues. In the term Antiphospholipid syndrome, Anti means against, phos means light, lipid means acid, syn means together, drome means running or conduction. The combined meaning of the term accurately explains the definition of the disorder.
Dysautonomia refers to the failure of parasympathetic or sympathetic components of the autonomic nervous system. In the term Dysautonomia, dys means defective or abnormal, autonomia means autonomic nervous system. The two-term exactly matches the definition of the disorder.
Septum pellucidum (SP) is the disorder which refers to the thin membrane present at the midlines of the brain that is between the halves of the brain. It affects behavior, intelligence, and the process of neurodevelopment. The septum is the partition between two chambers, pellucidum means clear or transparent which means a transparent layer between the midlines of the brain.
Disease and disorders are used interchangeably but they are not the same. The disease refers to the non-infectious disease while disorder is the disruption in the normal structure and functioning of the body ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"vVtklGJD","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Information, Pike, MD, & Usa, 2019)","plainCitation":"(Information, Pike, MD, & Usa, 2019)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":662,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/234ZSMTB"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/234ZSMTB"],"itemData":{"id":662,"type":"book","title":"How does the heart work?","publisher":"Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG)","source":"www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov","abstract":"The heart provides the body’s organs and tissues with a constant supply of blood – and with it vital oxygen and nutrients. The Circulatory or Respiratory Systems:
The heart and lungs have a strong connection. It is true that if one of the organs has any disorder, it definitely affects the other. The chest foundation is an organization that spreads health awareness related to the heart and lungs to decrease the number of disorders. The mission of the organization is to support research grants, patient education, and community service to champion lung health. It was founded in 1996 and from then they are providing funding for patient education, clinical research and community service. Within the information of patient education resources, numbers of disorders related to lungs are listed. Each disorder has a separate link which provides the complete information of the disorders including key facts, definition, causes, symptoms, risk factors, diagnosing, and treatment. It is the complete guide for the patient to know about their disease as well as for the medical students to understand the disorder in detail ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"XMKFGf4a","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}Respiratory research - ERS,\\uc0\\u8221{} n.d.)","plainCitation":"(“Respiratory research - ERS,” n.d.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":653,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/IHIDP7PJ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/IHIDP7PJ"],"itemData":{"id":653,"type":"webpage","title":"Respiratory research - ERS","URL":"https://www.erswhitebook.org/chapters/respiratory-research/","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",6,21]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“Respiratory research - ERS,” n.d.).
A large list of disorders is present which can be understood by breaking the terms into the parts and understanding their meaning. For a non-medical person, these terms make no sense or they cannot understand the meaning of it by just reading it. However, for the medical person, it becomes quite easy to understand the meaning of these term by breaking them into different parts. However, some disorders cannot be separated into parts to understand. For example, Emphysema is the disorder which refers to the difficulty in breathing due to the damage happened to the alveoli in the lungs. In the term Emphysema, there is no term which has medical term however emphȳsân is the Greek word means blow up or inflate which is used in the term. Tuberous Sclerosis is the disorder which can be understood by separating the medical term. In the word tuberous, tuber means growth, "ous" means pertaining to, and sclerosis means hardening. It is the disorder which means the growth of noncancerous growth. It affects various organs in the body including lungs, brain, and skin. The bottom line is medical terminology is difficult to understand but the continuous process of learning can help to know the meaning of the terms
Heather Response:
I agreed to your statement that the decline in health impacts the older adults in various ways. It brings changes in the physical, psychological and social development of adults. Our behavior change has a great impact on the stereotypes of society. For instance, you have given the example of the individuals who think that they are not able to continue their activities as a teenager. It is technically true but stereotypes like adulthood mean weakness and dependency on others make them weaker psychologically. I have seen many adults playing different supports, dancing and taking parts in other extracurricular activities. The fact is that stereotypes related to age have a negative impact on the person ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"IOsNISYu","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}Research on Health and Well-Being Aims to Improve Quality of Life in Later Years \\uc0\\u8211{} Population Reference Bureau,\\uc0\\u8221{} n.d.)","plainCitation":"(“Research on Health and Well-Being Aims to Improve Quality of Life in Later Years – Population Reference Bureau,” n.d.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":655,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/8GLFDZE4"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/yvjivw9i/items/8GLFDZE4"],"itemData":{"id":655,"type":"webpage","title":"Research on Health and Well-Being Aims to Improve Quality of Life in Later Years – Population Reference Bureau","URL":"https://www.prb.org/todays-research-aging-wellbeing/","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",6,21]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“Research on Health and Well-Being Aims to Improve Quality of Life in Later Years – Population Reference Bureau,” n.d.). The person who takes growing as a positive thing faceless physical and psychological issue and enjoy his life. On the other hand, people with negative thoughts on growing age face all these problems that you have discussed in your discussion. They treat themselves as weak and dependent which results in a decline in physical health.
