Polio or poliomyelitis is a deadly and infectious disease that can be transferred from one person to the other. This virus spreads through the brain to the spinal cord of the infected patient, leading towards the paralysis. Polio has great influence on the responsibilities of the nurse because this disease if treated on the early stages can save a patient from permanent disability. The first implication is to become a keen observer. Nurses should have pretty good knowledge about what to observe, how to observe, which symptoms are significant or which are not. If a polio virus spreads in a community, nurses are the first persons to accommodate the patient and observe their symptoms and immediately help them to avoid lifetime disability. Then comes the dealing with parents, it is very important to comfort the parents as their children are in isolation (George, 2011).
When I was practicing, this virus emerged in the village near to my hospital. The hospital was on alert and they send me to that village to tell the precautionary measures to avoid polio. The other major responsibility was to make every single member of the village immune from the virus by giving the drops. The difficult part was to comfort the parents of the victim, or telling them the bad news of the disability of their children.
The major reason for the emergence and reemergence of the polio is backward thinking or lack of knowledge in the people. There are many tribes and areas in which people refuses to vaccinate their new born children. Poor sanitation and hygiene is also send to be the one of the reasons in the reemergence of the polio virus (Belyakov, Ahlers, 2009).
In this case nurses can play a very vital role, whenever a child is born they should make sure that the baby gets the proper vaccination from all the viruses including polio. If this practice starts being followed by every nurse than we can easily manage to eradicate the virus. According to a patient perspective, nurses should provide the proper isolation to the polio patients, to avoid the further transmission of the virus to other people. Patients in isolation get psychological disturb and hyper because they are away from their families hence nurses should handle the patients with care and kindness (Echezuria, 2000).
