Part I
Neurodevelopmental treatment, abbreviated as NDT, is a practical treatment method to boost the function of children and adults who face difficulty in controlling their muscle movements because of neurological issues like head injury, cerebral palsy or stroke. The treatment includes directed or assisted movements as therapy tactics in a way that inputs from vestibular, somatosensory and tactile receptors in the body are interrelated. This technique was developed for patients who have suffered from brain injuries and can perform only a limited range of movements. When the treatment is carried out, the movements are repeated in the pattern so that a certain pattern is approachable for the movement. With the repetitions of an exercise, the steps become easy. If NDT is not given to patients, there are chances that the patient will have only access to these movements ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"QCJI3WIV","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}Neurodevelopmental Treatment in Physical Therapy})","plainCitation":"(Neurodevelopmental Treatment in Physical Therapy)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":59,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/6144444/items/AABI97IU"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/6144444/items/AABI97IU"],"itemData":{"id":59,"type":"webpage","title":"Neurodevelopmental Treatment in Physical Therapy","abstract":"This therapy uses guided or facilitated movements as a treatment strategy to ensure correlation of input from tactile, vestibular, and somatosensory receptors within the body.","URL":"https://www.kennedykrieger.org/patient-care/centers-and-programs/physical-therapy-clinic/neurodevelopmental-treatment","language":"en","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",11,20]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Neurodevelopmental Treatment in Physical Therapy).
Neurodevelopmental Treatment is done with critical patient handling proficiencies to assist the patient in the commencement and accomplishment of envisioned activities. This type of treatment is based on clinical reasoning instead of applying a continuous set of predefined techniques ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"smqiqSNe","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Vaughan et al.)","plainCitation":"(Vaughan et al.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":63,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/6144444/items/VARFW9Z8"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/6144444/items/VARFW9Z8"],"itemData":{"id":63,"type":"article-journal","title":"The Bobath Concept in Contemporary Clinical Practice: Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation:","volume":"16","issue":"1","URL":"https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1310/tsr1601-57","author":[{"family":"Vaughan","given":"Julie"},{"family":"Eustace","given":"Catherine"},{"family":"Brock","given":"Kim"},{"family":"Irwin-Carruthers","given":"Sheena"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2015",8,4]]},"accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",11,20]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Vaughan et al.). It is the duty of a therapist conducting Neurodevelopmental Treatment to look closely, examine, and understand the improvement in performing a task from before the treatment had started. The approach of technique is specified and designed according to each patient's issue and goals. For a Physical therapist to develop competency in this field, he or she must take courses offered by medical centers. Through hands-on experience, the PT r PTS can learn a lot about the treatment. Such courses are offered by numerous places and one of them includes the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association which provides certificate courses to PTs or PTAs. The respondents usually give NDT focused on performance by patient and quality movement once or twice a week. This therapy is entirely a management project which is based on the patients' movement in different conditions. It is appreciated that the families of the patient also take part in sessions.
Part II
A patient of Paraplegia is paralyzed from the waist down and requires a wheelchair for mobility at all times. To accommodate the wheelchair, some adjustments will become necessary. Firstly, the patient's room has to be big enough to accommodate the wheelchair and wheelchair should be able to move easily across the room. If the room of a patient is not big enough, he will be given another room to suit this need. If the entrance of the house makes the mobility of the wheelchair difficult, the entrance is required to made ramped. The ramp will be resistant to slipping and for better grip, made out of concrete. Also, the door will be widened so that a wheelchair can move easily from one room to another. Certain bathroom adaptations will be made to facilitate the patient. There are wheelchairs available in the market which are bathroom use friendly. The patient will need psychological support and it will be better to make necessary changes and adaptations so that he does not feel unconfident of himself.
A paralyzed person already suffers from physical pain and mental stress when unable to perform daily life activities like others. Stress and frustration develop among a person who can think properly but is not able to perform a simple task just because of not being able to move freely or use limbs. The responsibility of a family also increases greatly as they have to cater to almost every need. With increased burden over family, while they are busy in their lives too, also creates an atmosphere of depression. For this reason, it is very important for the NDT therapist to conduct routine schedules with the patient as well as family to tackle these issues. The patient, first of all, needs to be provided with everything that will make him least dependent on family for small tasks of everyday life. In this way, when he will be able to perform many of his tasks himself, he will gain confidence and motivation to live better. The family also needs psychological and social support from the therapist and community to continue helping the patient. The patient must be motivated and appreciated instead making him feel that he is less capable than anyone else.
My life will be changed in multiple ways in the presence of a family member who needs special care. More sense of responsibility and sensitivity will be induced to take care of him. This will affect physically, socially and psychologically. I will make changes around the house to accommodate his needs. I will try to manage my schedule to help that family member in the best manner. I will have to read more about how I can improve and facilitate even better. I will have to stay positive even when things get tough. I will take up courses and learn techniques to be prepared for emergency situations.
