Change Theory And Communication Barriers
Introduction
Communications and networks are an essential part of organizations to succeed in this competing world. Many organizations have developed effective tools for members to communicate and share expertise which makes it easier to perform group work. However, in nursing, it is quite difficult to communicate with the patients in a planned manner. There are certain barriers which restrict the facilitators from communicating and requires different change interventions to minimize the distortion. The most influential nursing change theory was given by Kurt Lewin; in which he proposed a three-phase model of change that includes unfreezing, change and refreeze CITATION Nur16 \l 1033 (Nursing-Theory.org, 2016).
Discussion
Change theory generally consists of three stages i-e driving forces that push the matter to bring a change and bring a shift in the equilibrium. The second stage is restraining forces that oppose the driving forces in contrasting course. They cause the equilibrium to compete against the change. Equilibrium keeps the driving and restraining forces at equivalent positions, thus no change occurs. These change forces are essential for change theory in nursing such as in unfreezing which tends to involve traditional methods and old patterns, this the driving forces poses change to get rid of unproductive ways CITATION Bat14 \l 1033 (Batras, Duff, & Smith, 2014).
The driving forces challenge the status quo and insist to change the existing state. To overcome the barriers in communications, it is essential to unfreeze the forces which require to come up with new ideas and change the processes accordingly. It also entails to minimize the restraining forces that adversely clash with the intervention from existing equilibrium. It requires strategies to minimize the negative effect of restaing forces. It also needs to build a balance between forces to find a middle way. The change theory also requires a change in thoughts behaviours and feelings towards the patients. It is not only based on the change in systems but also requires a change in attitudes of facilitators for better outcomes as explained by Lean Systems Approach. It asks for interprofessional collaborative actions by the team members to implement and sustain change CITATION Woj16 \l 1033 (Wojciechowski, Murphy, Pearsall, & French, 2016).
