A Look into Reality Television

Over the years, reality television shows have increased dramatically by involving millions of people and making it impossible to avoid this genre of television. It has been the most talked about on social media, the internet,magazines and other forms of media. It is a new kind of entertainment that has attracted the youth of the society and they can relate their life with the show. It’s good to watch such entertaining shows which are somehow close to the reality of life.

They show the actual and real aspects of life but in between the portrayal of reality and entertainment, they sometimes lose track of the original context and show an entirely different kind of cheap reality. This genre of TV is important for me because I have been watching these reality showsfor quite a while now andenjoy them too, but now they have become more scripted.The cheap conflicts along with extra vulgarity these shows provide, is somewhat to be work on. Not every conflict can be reality-basedand extra vulgarity on television is not entertaining, especially for teens who are addicted to such shows.

It is very unique of television that it has now started showing the real side of the characters by involving them in shows that are produced only to entertain people. Withthe engagement of millions of people, it has now become an important part of television. People enjoy the entertaining parts of these reality TV shows but they are much bothered by the fact that they now have become a scripted form of reality. Everything the characters do in the show,is actually scripted which makes the audience lose interest, thus the program becomes boring. For example, the reality tv show ‘Big Brother’ has become a scripted show, away from reality because their activities have become fake and unreal. They try to provide entertainment but the audience has now become more clever and knows the realistic level of the show.

The sole purpose of such TV shows is to provide entertainment and that's what I love about these shows because they give so much relief after a tiresome day. This purpose has lost its track and the characters are creating so much disturbance that it makes the audience to switch the channel. They take the support of unnecessary conflicts to come in the spotlight and in this way the get more attraction than the other characters. Every show tries to do something different with their characters like the show ‘Naked and Afraid' is very much a disturbing show because the writer puts the contestants on difficult situations which I think acceptable but to make them extra suffer for an award is not fair at all. If it is meant to provide entertainment than how can they make them so miserable that they end up going into depression in real life. Here the audience, the youth especially is the most affected by such shows.

Glam is good for these kinds of reality shows but extra glam can make them B grade programs which mostly flop. We should be careful with our kids and keep an eye on them when they watch TV. This is important because they will be effected by these shows which is not good for kids their age. For example, they cannot watch‘The Bachelorettes' because it is too much glamorous and there are too many bold scenes in that show and one cannot watch it with their children. It is good they are spreading love and happiness among the audience but at the same time, they are promoting vulgarity in the name of glam. So we should be careful about such programs that are not good for people under a certain age.

It’s a good thing that television is evolving day by day and providing so much entertainment to millions of people but their negative impacts are increasing day by day which is worse. If this happens to continue then we would also see a drastic decrease in the production of reality tv.

Life teaches us significant life-long lessons through many sources; parents, siblings, peers, relatives, teachers and colleagues. However, no one could do this the way Mr. Briggs impacted my life. I still remember the lesson that I learned years ago that was not any law of motion, theory of evolution or any literature stuff; it was the lesson of life. The lesson to live and let others live tranquilly. I would disclose this event in brief words then I would explain what I actually learned and how did it help me reshape my attitude towards others.

It was just like an ordinary day at school. I was in grade 7 at that time. Our ethics teacher Mr. Watson Briggs entered the class and asked the name of one of my classmates. “Clark” he replied. Teacher then asked him to leave the class immediately. He made many clarifications saying “I didn’t do anything wrong, please let me stay in, Sir” but it was all futile. After making many attempts he left the class eventually; we all saw him leaving with pathetic grins but could not do anything in front of an authoritative teacher. Mr. Briggs then started delivering his first lesson asking “what do you know about law?” someone said, “laws are conventions developed for controlling one’s undesirable actions towards others” someone echoed, “laws keep the powerful refrained from suppressing the inferior.” Mr. Briggs then asked for more and I replied, “so that we could build justice and peace in the society.” “This is what I wanted to listen” he liked my suggestion nodding his head appreciatively. He further added, “Just tell me one thing, did I do something wrong by expelling the Clark? “What do you say?” Genuinely, we all did not adore it and expressed the same that he did absolutely inappropriate to Clark. “Alright, I did the wrong, I tyrannized an innocent but why did you all remain silent despite knowing it wrong? Do you think justice can be done with such an attitude? Do you all think laws without an insight and a desire to implement can work?” He asked in emotionally charged way. A spell of awkward silence took over us. We could not speak anything. He taught us the most significant lesson of life, “Laws are just phrases without the power of implementation.”

He not only centralized his attention to teach particular subject skills but also taught us how to speak up against injustice and unethical happenings. Without any desire to implement, law is just like a sword without sharpness; the most useless thing we can assume. I learned that education is not about merely knowing something but it determines how well we implement our learning to do something productive. We are good creators with poor implementation ability. Educating ourselves means developing an ability to speak and stand against injustice and whenever we feel like something inappropriate has happened (Hazard and Geoffrey 2004).

These lessons helped me a lot shaping my personality. I was pro-social but lacked will power standing against the despotic creatures and make explicit decisions to undo the profligate. I had an avoidant personality; I felt immensely comfortable neglecting the wrong and felt reluctant to confront abominable events and judgment. I thought people would call me wrong and make undesirable remarks about me or I would have to face obnoxious consequences from the ones who have the authority but this event helped me changing my personality from avoidant to open. I developed openness to experience no matter what the consequences are. I learned to affirm the right even if I was left all alone. This is what I learned and it was indeed the best lesson of my life; thanks to Mr. Briggs.

Critical Analysis of “A Modest Proposal”

Jonathan Swift is famous for his peculiar style of writing. He has published several masterpieces to awaken the rational faculty of his Irish masses. However, he is widely acclaimed for his witty essay “A Modest Proposal”. This is the essay where he adopted the satirical style of writing to illuminate the new perspective. Basically, it is an effort on his part to salvage the already stressed Irish population. He discovers and projects an idea that parents can make use of their children if they are not able to cope with their expenses. Jonathan Swift in this essay also mocks at the pragmatists as they try to solve every humanitarian problem with the help of logic. Jonathan Swifts’ s modest proposal was an attempt on his part to solve several social problems of the Irish land and also a to focus on the idea that not every real-life problem can be solved with the use of logic and rationality only.

To begin with, Swift elaborates the intricacies of poor life and the associated miseries with it. Besides, the very opening lines of the essay depict the cruel side of poverty where he pictures the beggars, sex-workers on the road asking for alms (Swift, 442). He detests the situation in his homeland that has remained under the colonial empire. He discovered this plan in the era of enlightenment where it was all about rationality and practicality in life. He doesn’t beggary and giving an innovative solution for it. He does not like young people wasting their talent on the road when they could fully utilize their potential. He wants them to work for the greater good in the country.

Furthermore, he satirically advises the parent to seriously realize the potential of selling for their livelihood. He urges parents to use their children for survival rather than begging on the road. He used the weirdest possible logic to mock at realists and pragmatist. He seems emotionless and made full use of the logic here as he advises people to eat their children (swift, 444). However, it is just his way to control the social maladies of poor Irish land. With this strange piece of logic, he actually attacks the rational class of people as real-world problems are so complex that they are not solved with rationality. Hence, he criticizes the imperfect use of rationality in solving life problems.

Moreover, Swift argues that this scheme of selling children would also limit the high rate of abortions (Swift, 443). He argues that women would not murder their own child for the sake of money. Besides, such sale and purchase would reduce the chances of murders in society. As a matter of fact, he is propagating such novel and merciless ideas to eradicate social evils as he mentions in (swift, 447). Hence, he made it clear to the readers why he is giving such immodest proposal to the Irish people as he wants to solve the issue of murders and abortions in society.

To summarize, the Modest Proposal is a satirical piece of writing and like all satirical writings, it doesn’t mean that sift has the same intent. He is basically mocking at people to adopt effective ways of livelihood rather than begging on the road with their children. He used his peculiar artistic expression to control several social problems such as poverty, beggary, and overpopulation. Perhaps, this is the time that to think seriously on this proposal the world is gradually progressing to hit the mark of eleven billion people.

Personal Reflection on the Story

Miss Emily Grierson is the lead character of the story who depicts certain unusual behavior of a woman that is quite different from other members of society. She is a typical lady of her own type that demonstrates a particular character that might be considered as touchy, resistant, superstitious, rigid, abnormal, dangerous, and somewhat weird. Such a character cannot adjust in a society, which might be the reason that she has isolated herself from all people of the community. People can only see her through the window while she strolls by or when some authorized person has to go inside for some special reason or discussion. Miss Grierson’s character is remarkable in the way that it delivers a complete portrayal of a lady, belonging to an old era, who cannot adjust with the ways of the new generation. Her story is strange, and her actions are questionable. Certain deeds of her, provoke contempt in the reader’s mind. At times, the reader takes pity on her. Her story has elements of horror as well as those of a psychopath. The story is a tragedy as Ms. Grierson’s story reveals her life incidents, her loneliness, and her madness. The writer of the story, William Faulkner, has crafted the character of Ms. Grierson by incorporating different dark shades, absurd meanings, and pitiable aspects in it, which all make-up its strangeness to the full degree.

The story comprises five parts, each describing certain incidents in Ms. Grierson’s life, disclosing the secrets of her personality (Bausch). The story revolves around the scene of her death, starting and ending by this incident. This indicates that tragedy might be the theme in the writer’s mind. He seems to highlight her death as the most significant incident in Ms. Grierson’s life. This theme is probably dominating in the story as the protagonist lives alone, throughout her life, confined in her monumental house. Living alone, is itself, the worst tragedy in a person’s life. Further, Ms. Grierson is abandoned by her beloved whom she wants to be with. She has inherited the absurd and abnormal traits from her family. Her belongings only increase the weirdness inside her. She has absorbed the common mentality of the age she lived in. The grandeur of her family is no more; she lives almost a miserable life in the house, with nobody outside the house who is like her in their view of life. Despite being a piece of craze and curiosity for all the residents of her town, she is a complete tragedy in her very existence.

People of her town also demonstrate a much unusual attitude towards her. No one is willing to accept her as insane or criminal. Everyone tries to find some justification or positive aspect in her ways of life. Even the mayor of her town, Col. Sartoris, gave her much relaxation in her taxation formalities. The next generation authoritative officials, also, could not take any considerable action against her, and she remained successful in the end in avoiding tax payments. People would not dare interfere in her life, rather they tend to support her resilience towards changing trends. Her father does not make any effort to eliminate the adversity of her life. Her cousins come and go, and she remains bound by the house, as always. She seems not to be supported by anyone of the people she knows so that she can think of changing the way she is.

Comparison of above Reflection with General Criticism

Critics of the story have identified various themes in the story. They have tried to come up with different explanations of the character, incidents, and symbolism. An important criticism made by Bei-bei Ye describes the reasons behind the tragic fate of Ms. Grierson. The critic describes her tragedy by dividing the reasons behind it into two types. First is the environmental factor, which indicate that the tragedy in her life is due to the circumstances she faces (Ye). The second factor contributing to her tragedy involves herself, as she depicts particular psychopathic attitude and behavior at times. Answering these questions, the research provides evidence if Ms. Grierson is guilty or not. According to this research on the story, the aim is not only to provide the chronological tragic incidents occurring in Ms. Grierson’s life. The background of the writer is as important as other factors needed to write the analysis. William Faulkner has focused on the South, in most of his works. He wants to highlight the prevailing corruption and decline in the region. The author of the critique admires Faulkner’s artistic charm and agrees with his view that the story is an inevitable tragedy. Faulkner has gone beyond the limit of his character to explain the tragedy of the human being. Among the environmental factors causing Ms. Grierson’s tragedy are the cultural and historical factors. She and her father are the last descendants of their family that had glorious past with Southern aristocracy. She inherited the particular way of thinking from her family, and the hesitation of avoidance to face the reality and mix up with other people. Ms. Grierson’s affiliation with her father was another cause of her stereotype. Her father was a strong advocate of their old traditions. Ms. Grierson’s bondage with her father made the distortions in her personality. One of the environmental causes of Ms. Grierson’s tragedy were the people around her, in town. Their curiosity, picky eyes, and over-concern towards her life and activities made her bound to her house and avoid social gatherings. People did not allow her to live a normal life. Among the personal factors contributing to her tragedy, her failure of love cannot be ignored. Homer is the love of her life whom she wants to marry, but he is not convinced of getting married. Disappointed by his rejection and waiting for him for considerable time, she ultimately decides to kill him and keep him in his house so that he cannot leave her anymore. She has confined herself in the house she inherited from her father. She lives in a place that is practically disconnected from the society. Living alone has impaired Ms. Grierson’s mind and perception. She cannot think normally. She thinks it to be fair to poison her beloved and keep him in one of the bedrooms in her house, lying in bed and left to be rotten with time. Finally, her mind or personality is the main reason of all the tragedy she faces. She is rigid, stubborn, and resilient. People have almost forgotten her existence in their community until they find a smell from her house, which makes a connection once again between the people and Ms. Grierson.

Other critics have associated themes of cruelty, psychopathy, and betrayal with this story. The rose has been the symbol of love or tragedy, and in case of Ms. Grierson, the rose perfectly symbolizes her tragedy (Gale). People who come at her funeral were different in their intentions. Some arrive at the place to see what is inside the house, out of curiosity. Others come there in reverence of the old lady. One thing is common in all, that is, everyone has a special thinking about the lady who is dead.

A Smart Career Decision

"If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes" - Andrew Carnegie. The hardest and the most burdensome life is a life without a goal, and the ridiculous life is a life with aimless goals (Ernst, Monique, et al., P.p. 682-691). As the acronym SMART refers that a person should have a goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound, any goal which lacks any of these features is aimless. Career can be built or ruined with one decision.

Dilemmas in taking the right decisions never end, and people who defeat such dilemmas to make the right decisions are those who are quoted by their latter ones. A decision is a plan to achieve a goal, or we can say it is a road map to reach a destination. No destination can be pursued without a clear and precise map (Paulus, Martin P., et al., P.p. 1439-1448). A clear and precise map is a map that is not erroneous in showing us the way to the destination, and that helps us to avoid the lanes which can lead us away from the main route or which can waste our precious time in unnecessary expeditions.

A good or bad career decides our future; it is necessary to make a smart decision for career building. A smart career decision is the one that: keeps us motivated enough to run after our goals, guides us in the best possible way to reach the destination as soon as possible, and eliminates all the vagueness that blurs our focus on the goal (Dantas, Guilherme Coelho, et al. P.p. 15). A most important factor in making a decision is that never run after a goal unless your mind and heart are fully prepared and determined to touch the desired sky. Once they both come in agreement, make a strategy that clearly defines your path to the goal.

A time when I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior

I belong to a Christian family and I was born and raised with the teachings of Christianity in Church. When I go to church in my childhood, it was very interesting for me to know about God. Since a long time, I felt myself a so-called Sunday Christian because i don’t have proper knowledge about Christianity and I just went to Church in my routine. My belief in God was not firm and I thought that the true effort of the person is required to accomplish any task and no one helped or saved us in our problems because I was not a real Christain. I had too much pride and confidence and that pride encourage me to do the things which are against Christianity religion like “the same way that it influenced Adem and Eve to try to become like God “(Gen.3:5).  

           A few years ago on June 16, 2015, I was on the way to home, it was raining heavily at that time and my front, back, left, the right side was filled with cars. I had met with a car accident and suddenly I shout, Jesus if you are real, please safe. Luckily the van coming from the front side, hit the side of my car and I had escaped from unbelievable car accident because I receive Jesus as my Lord and savior. “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). That was the turning point of my life when I felt that God loves me a lot and I decided to reconcile my relationship with God. At that time, I had also decided the first time to take admission in Bible School when I finished my college and serve God. Now I felt that I have enough time to prove myself to be a good Christian. Kindly give me admission in this bible School so that I can pursue my aim and serve humanity and God. I will be very thankful for your this act of kindness.

No one likes to talk about their mistakes because it is really difficult to discuss our wrong decisions that we made knowingly. I remember when I had to do the same when I was in high school. I made the mistake of never taking my high school seriously. This is because I was too burdened with my family’s responsibilities and had to take care of my siblings. It was high time that I decided to work and earn money to support my family. So I started a job in a grocery store near my house. I used to work there for eight hours daily and had to buy groceries and do other household chores as my mother was unable to support us because of Alzheimer’s disease and she had to stay in the house all the time despite being. She needed help in her daily activities like eating and walking. At that time, I was in high school and end term exams were around the corner. As I used to work eight hours daily and then had to manage other things at home as well, so I usually could not spare enough time to prepare for my exams. I was afraid that I would fail the test and end up repeating my class. I did not want to get poor grades, keeping in view my current financial situation. Above all, I had the responsibility of my family who were dependent upon me.

I and my friend used to work in the same store and went to the same school. I tried my best to prepare for my exams but I could not cover the entire course due to shortage of time. I had to leave a few chapters and all I could do at that moment was to pray to God for his help. Whereas, my friend was relaxed and I wondered why as he too had not prepared for the exam. I asked him and he told me that he had found a short cut to success and he did not want to end up like me, cramming all the material, a night before the exam.

So, it was my exam day and I was not well prepared for it. I desperately wanted to pass my exam so that I could get a better job. I was frustrated and confused. When our exam started, I figured out that I knew the answers to majority of the questions. I was happy and started my exam. Meanwhile, I looked at my friend and found out that he was cheating. I wanted to tell the teacher on duty but I could not do that. After all, he was my friend. How could I do that to him? Even at that time, I knew that I was doing wrong but I did not want to lose my best friend. During examination, I was scared and nervous because of my friend that he might get caught and get expelled from school. But soon the exam was over and we were free to go home.

I can never forget those exams because they cost me the most precious thing of my life: my conscience. I still cannot face the fact that I did not stop my friend from cheating in the exam. He was the one who always supported me in my hard times and directed me to the right path. But that day, he forgot all his moral values and chose the wrong path.

I still regret that mistake and want to fix it but that won’t be possible now. It was the only time I wanted to stop my friend from doing wrong but I could not and I think I should have stopped him. Cheating is not a short cut to success but it is the first step towards self-destruction. Essay writing is a challenging task and requires critical skills to produce a quality piece of paper. I was faced with a similar challenge in the past. Since my childhood, essay writing has proved a headache for me and further desecrated the overall grades I received. I possessed a profound interest in writing, especially storytelling and technical writing. Family members and friends acclaim the art I possess to ink my pen for writing scintillating short stories. I did not take seasoned training or coaching from writers to pursue the dream of writing amazing stories. Nevertheless, the essay writing kept me confused for a significant period of time.

Moreover, the aspect of not succeeding to produce a quality essay is a critical aspect. I never took the lectures of the teacher seriously. For instance, I used to either ignore the lecture or the skip the classes. My friends would teach me a few days before regarding essays and important topics for the papers. Thus, I failed to establish a composed strategy to address the menace of essay writing. After receiving a severe response from the family, I got intrigued. I endeavored to learn the skills of mastering the essay writing in a proficient manner. First, I approached a cousin who is an elder member of our family. He was a teacher and had significant command over the English language and fundamentals of writing a quality essay. Synopsis

The short story ‘A&P’ was authored by John Updike in 1961. It often considered by the literary scholars as the denominator of the middle class, which is conditioned by the consumer conditioned society. It is a story of how an individual rebels against the preconceived notions of society. The story revolves around the teenage clerk named Sammy who works at the A&P store. One day, while he is working three young women enter the store taking Sammy by awe. He indulges in imagining details about the girls regarding their voices, their appearance and impressions altogether. He is however taken by surprise when the leader of the group named Queenie speaks and her voice is not as he had imagined. The parallel side of the story depicts the old manager named Lengel who prudish in his manner. He admonishes the girls for not wearing proper clothes to a grocery store. In addition to this, he also advises the girls to cover their shoulders next time. This offends Sammy and he resigns in the name of customer regard and dignity regardless of the fact that this would affect his parents. Samy does this top impress the young women who have already left despite the store by then.

Critical Literary Analysis

Themes

The story revolves around multiple themes of the middle class who is subjected to the consumerism and commericialism. The writer continuously makes refernces to the consumer demands and the luxurious which have meddled with the minds of the consumers leading them to think that they are but a necessity in their life. He demonstrates a clear link between the economic statuses of people and their emotions that are evident in the small town in America. The story is based on the cold war era. The inscrutinibilty of the women in the story hold misunderstanding of their intention to wear clothes to the grocery store and vividly depicts misogyny in the society. Hence glimpses of the ruin and flight in the economy are seen side by side through subtle references to situations and purchase patterns of the people. Moreover, charlatans in the position of authority are also observed in the story where Lengel’s behavior patterns change as he rose to power.

Sammy in this story shows resentment and criticizes the influence of consumerism on the individuals. Regardless of his own classification and objectifying the perceptions abtout the girls in his imagination. This shows the contention between the lower and the higher class mirroring the inequities that persist within the society, exposing the lower class to the oppression of capitalist economic ideologies. The story intensely highlights the Marxist facets vivid in the consumerism, classism, and commodification of people and products in society. In the story, Sammy is an example of a lower class as he is simply a bag boy at the A&P store. When the boss asked the girl to leave, Sammy stood up for a girl against his boss. Girls were at wrong and the boss (Lengel) should have a higher say as compare to Sammy. Queenie walks in the store like she owns the store not caring for any rule and also disrespecting the store’s manager. This attitude of Queenie makes Sammy believe that she has a higher social standing class. According to Marxism reflection, typical portraying of a hot popular girl which is reflected in the story is not necessary. This image of popular girls is very common in classic American literature.

Sammy as a bag boy in a grocery store feels that it is his duty to please a person from a higher social class than his own and stood up against his manager even though the girls were at wrong. The story is completely reflecting lower class dissension on entertaining people of upper class.

A&P is a short story which shows the difference between different between people according to their social class. when Sammy (the main character of the story) notices three girls entering the store he is working, he couldn't get his eyes off one of the girls. When girls are done shopping, the manager stops the girl and tell them that they are not dressed appropriately. Sammy trying to impress the girls had an argument with the manager and quits his job. The story painted the girls so perfectly that the reader can easily know how the girls look like. Characters are so well explained that the reader thinks that he/she is witnessing the story with his/ her own eyes. Way John Updike explains what Sammy is watching and noticing makes the story natural and realistic. The great use of imagery is how the writer makes the reader in believing that anyone can quit his job for a girl like Quinnie. In the story, Sammy compares the grocery stores with a pinball machine which is a good example of imagery. Sammy explains his experience as if he was inside a pinball machine, he didn’t know from which tunnel the girl will come out of.

Coming of age 200

Sammy explains the story of three girls coming to the store as if it was a regular day and a life change event can take place at any time. Samy knew about the town, and he thinks he has a good perspective of the people living in the town. Story portraits negativity in Sammy’s thought. Living under the bad conditions and social level discrimination had an impact on Sammy’s thinking.

Sammy notices McMahon staring at the girls and realized that the girls clothing are putting them in an uncomfortable situation.

The manager clearly is upset with the way the girls are dressed up and entered his store. No matter which class a person belongs to, one does not act like he owns everything and even the lower class people. This quote clearly reflects how Lengel is a person who stands by ethics and rules and does not please the people with higher social status.

A&P Reading Story: Essay

The "A&P" story by John Updike is narrated by one of the characters of the story, ‘Sammy’, a nineteen-year-old boy who works as a cashier in an A&P grocery store located in a small town in the United States. The story narrates an incident that occurred in the store when three young girls visited the store dressed in bathing suits which captured the attention of the people and staff present at the store. Sammy, standing at the checkout line also noticed the girls and observed them closely. He seemed interested and attracted by the girls and assessed their looks minutely. Sammy wondered about the reason behind their odd dressing which grabbed the attention of people at the A&P. Besides that speculation, Sammy noticed the most attractive girl from the group and assumed her to be the leader of the girls' gang. In his imagination, Sammy labeled her as ‘Queenie’ who seemed naturally graceful and beautiful among other girls. The store observed a unique commotion as the three girls wandered around the store. Sammy opinionated the attire of the girls as the store was not located near a seashore which would have made their dressing less noticeable.

Besides Sammy, his coworkers also gazed at those girls and joked around. Later, another colleague joined them and made lewd remarks on the teen girls. Soon, Sammy sensed a feeling of shame and disappointment towards the girls for compromising themselves in a way that everyone got attracted to them. However, Sammy thought that they might not have realized the impact of their actions. In the meanwhile, the ladies chose Sammy's checkout line to pay for their purchases which displaced the feelings of Sammy from pity to a complete excitement.

The author introduces a new character in the story named ‘Lengel’. The manager of the A&P store came to Sammy's checkout row. The store manager castigated the attire of girls with regard to the store culture and policy. The treatment of Lengel made the girls, especially Queenie, discomfited and humiliated. Though Queenie stated some reasons to justify the objection which invoked the interest of Sammy who imagined her as a high-class girl with a liberal mindset.

The argument between the two parties ended when the girls left the store. That generated an unexpected response from Sammy who decided to quit his job at that particular moment. The reaction surprised the store manager and warned Sammy about the repercussions of his decision but Sammy was determined and assumed that the girls were watching him. Despite Lengel's cautioning, Sammy left the store, quitting his job. However, the girls were long gone and Sammy was left with his vague feelings and the aftermath of his prompt decision (Updike).

The story depicts the character of Sammy as a common teenager who was uninterested in his job and as a young boy, he was fascinated by the girls to get their attention which made him decide on quitting his job at A&P store. Following are some quotations from the story which explicated his ambiguous and unjustified decision:

Quotation 1

“You never know for sure how girls’ minds work (do you really think it’s a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?”

The comment made by Sammy depicted his male chauvinist attitude towards girls, who apparently showed that he neither noticed the girls nor got attracted to them and suppressed the girl's mental abilities initially. Sammy, a teenager boy poses to be aloof of the girls and their thinking due to which he stated disproving remarks about the girls' minds. The boy showed a sarcastic and arrogant behavior and tried to justify his opinion among his fellow workers. It also shed light on Sammy's non-serious attitude and immature thinking which pushed him to make such remarks which actually portrayed his inner complex. He assumed that the girls belonged to an elite class which was in contrast to Sammy's status who belonged to a poor family and did the job to make his livelihood. In order to overcome his feeling of inferiority, he commented in a way to mask his feelings in front of his co-workers but actually, he was completely occupied by the leader of the girls' gang, Queenie, physically and mentally and had a growing intention to impress her (HAO et al.).

Near the end of the story, the above resolution made by Sammy against Lengel's cautioning made him more determined towards his decision of quitting. Although, Sammy disapproved of Lengel's behavior towards girls, his decision was inadequate with relevance to the A&P culture. Lengel was right about his criticism as he abided by the values of his company. But Sammy who was an employee of the A&P and was obligated to follow his company's principles, suddenly linked himself with the girls' thinking and lifestyle. Though, Sammy realized that he did not conform to the old cultural values of the A&P but quitting the job was not the right option to choose. He might have stayed there and brought a change in their culture with an acceptance of the customers belonging to diverse cultures. Sammy's decision was irrespective of his future considerations. He might have changed the culture of the company by staying there but his decision of quitting just separated him from those obsolete cultural values and allowed Lengel and the A&P to confine to their outdated principles (Kristoff).

Sammy said, "I quit," in time for them to hear, but they continued out of the store, paying no attention.

Sammy's response to Lengel's misconduct (in his opinion) was quite prompt and immature. In Sammy's belief, the girls were standing there and taking notice of Sammy's remarks about quitting the job which depicted Sammy's intention to impress the girls which represented the common behavior of a teenage boy who got attracted to girls and wanted to get the attention. That depicted his immature consideration towards the incident and he fell a victim of temporary elucidation which resulted in him with no fruitful outcome and he had to leave his job. The choice he made led him to an epiphany. His effort of acting as a hero in front of the girls, later made him realized that things were different in the real world. For, in reality, Sammy’s decision neither captivated the girls nor resolved anything (Kristoff).

At the end of the story, Sammy thought about the aftermath of his decision and the hardness of the life he might encounter after quitting his job. He compared Lengel's robust personality and hardness in his attitude with the hardships of the world that awaited Sammy outside the A&P store. Although, he had made him free from Lengel's service and his mindset, he might face such inflexible managers in his future. Each time he could not abandon such individuals and had to face the reality of life. His decision was based on his firmness and attitude towards the misconduct but how his decisions could affect him was not pondered. Sammy did not consider the complications he might encounter in his future due to his prompt decision. Legality of Abortion

Abortion is an important part of women’s rights. Even though there is certain controversy and discussion surrounding the subject, the fact remains that the women should have a right to decide. The reason is that they are at the most risk during the pregnancy and they are the ones that are supposed to take care and nurture the life (Nobis and Grob, 2019). It is an obvious fact that women are affected more by abortion as compared to men, so this discussion is needed to be looked and discussed from that perspective (Harris et al, 2018).

Now, having the right to women’s own body is one of the defining rights of women (Nobis and Grob, 2019). The idea is that the women should be in the position to make sure that they are in control of their own body and it must be their own moral right what they want to do about it. If women are not allowed to abort an unwanted fetus, then it is in some ways the deprivation of what they want to do with their bodies (Harris et al, 2018). The United States legislation despite its vagueness tends to support this argument to a certain level as they are well within their rights to terminate pregnancy at any point of time (Guenther, 2018).

The other dynamic that is added to the whole discussion is due to the gender dynamic. The women’s liberation movement considers childbearing and having a choice about it as something that is an integral part of women’s identity. For them, the right to abortion is one of the basic rights when one talks about gender equality. The idea that women are not allowed to have an abortion is something that is quite hard for people to understand since in society, most of the times tend to support women who do not exercise this right. The argument can be made that men and women both need to have a right regarding their child but at the end of the day, men don’t face the everlasting bodily consequences as a result of the pregnancy, and they are not restricted in one way or another (Guenther, 2018). The freedom that is given to women is quite limited by childbearing. There are some other stereotypes as well that are needed to be dealt with to ensure that this problem is being resolved in a much more appropriate manner. At the end of the day, it all boils down to having control over one’s body (Bryant et al, 2018).

Then there is a case of how free access to education and other facilities and freedom to make one’s choices is concerned. It is a well-known fact that organizations do not really accommodate women for a long time in case of the childbirth. The argument here is that there are practical reasons for it as well, but the fact remains that how in the long run, it is harmful for their career. Thus, in order to have political, social and economic representation, pregnancy can be a big hindrance to their career. They need to have same level of creative freedom as men. To ensure that the level playing field is even, there is a glass ceiling that women must break to ensure that they are able to get their way in their career. The case of Roe vs Wade comes to mind where even United States court set the precedence where right of abortion was being given to women. Obviously, there are many conditions attached to it and abortion is one of the most largely debated topic around the world. The debate is still going on now where how these conditions are supposed to work out (Bryant et al, 2018).

The other factor that must be taken into reckoning is that despite the apparent ban on abortion, it is something that is going to be carried out regardless. And when something is officially banned, women are going to be finding their way and they would be putting themselves at risk. The risk that they are going to be facing is that they would be hiring illegal abortionists. The usage of such abortionists is going to put them at great risk and would further strengthen the argument, which is why abortion is risky (Bryant et al, 2018).

In hindsight, it can be said that abortion has been an old practice. For women rights, and having better creative freedom in terms of their career choice. Furthermore, having a pregnancy and the development of fetus is something that is rather a personal choice and without having enough merit to want a baby, the compulsion cannot be enforced on women that they should be going through with pregnancy (Bryant et al, 2018). The unfortunate part is that pregnancy has become a controversial topic due to the religious and moral consideration and the likelihood that amicable solution for something obvious is quite hard to reach now. The problem is that even American laws are not clear about abortion and there is a sense of cowardice regarding any legislation about abortion due to apparent nature of the study.

However, distributors and various organizations disagree with the reason provided by the American states. They proclaim that the self-medicated abortion tablets, Misoprostol and Mifepristone, are completely safe to use because they are medically tested and certified (Dahiya et al. 1057). Likewise, these two tablets are equally effective for terminating pregnancies for the reason that if any one of these tablets cannot be made available, the second tablet will work in the same way. According to one of the distributing companies, self-medicated abortion practices have been prevalent in America for the last fifteen years and are not uncommon to the women (Tang et al. 724). They also state that, like any other medication, these medicines have minor side-effects such as nausea and headache.

However, in case of emergency, these companies strongly advise that the person should not wait for long and visit a nearby health care center since these medicines allow women to bleed within 24 hours as a sign of terminating their unwanted pregnancies. Besides, these medicines come with an instruction manual or counseling calls which first assess the health condition of women. If they see any sign of previous or recurring medical conditions, they do not advise them to use abortion pills so that it may not aggravate their symptoms. If the woman is already showing symptoms of some other disease, it gets difficult for the mother to carry out her pregnancy till the very end. In such a scenario, the role of State should also be questioned that if they discourage self-medicated abortions as an unsafe practice then why is it forcing women to carry out these pregnancies if they are already showing symptoms of some other disease. Quite surprisingly, studies have revealed that abortion pills do not increase the risk of developing breast cancer among pregnant women (Hardon 40). These risks develop in those women who do not terminate their pregnancy in time and as a result, the infant develops these symptoms because of genetics. Unwanted pregnancies trigger anxiety issues and depression among American women since it is revealed in a survey that American women do not prefer giving birth to more than two children. Self-medicated abortion gives them the freedom to terminate pregnancies because they have full control of their bodies according to the civil liberties provided to them by the Federal law of Roe v. Wade. Besides, State-administered abortion bans violate the feminist ideology as well as humanitarian principles (Ferguson and Jenkins 363).

Based on evidence and various studies carried out in this regard, it is safe to say that abortion pills do not pose any major or life-threatening consequences to pregnant women as multiple American states or health care centers generally advocate. Moreover, these pills can also prove to be highly effective and beneficial in the lieu of family planning policies because they are both effective and carry no major or life-threatening side effects (Is the Abortion Pill Safe?). In the case of teen pregnancies, these pills can ensure the medical safety of girls and they can be saved from the trauma of undergoing a surgical abortion. In the same manner, the reproductive organs of these girls can be saved because in surgical abortions, the risk of permanent damage to the reproductive organs is high comparatively. These tablets do not harm their reproductive organs and instead terminate periods through bleeding which is a safe and pain-free (Tang et al. 724) process. They have countless benefits over surgical abortion practices since it does not affect women and their physical well-being, as well as their mental health.

Abortion can be defined as an induced termination of a human pregnancy, and the practice is widely considered as a social, legal, religious, ethical, and medical dilemma. Regardless of all the debate in favour of such absurd conduction, abortion is not a pragmatic approach to pursue. In order to disseminate the awareness about the adversaries of abortion, the related women and the entire society should be deemed as the target audience. Legislative authorities have acknowledged fetus as a human being, and in this context, induced abortion becomes equal to murdering a human who has all the rights to live otherwise. On the other hand, in many cases, abortion is executed in unsafe conditions that augment the health-based intricacies in women and can rob them from a chance to conceive another baby again.

The frequency of abortions can be mitigated by observing the following strategies.

Abortion: a solution or a problem

Introduction

Arguments on whether abortion should be legal, or illegal have been circulating very heavily lately. A woman may get an abortion for various reasons, whether it be because conception was an accident, financial difficulties, or even health-related issues (Francome 55). Plenty of options in contraception are offered that could prevent or eliminate the option of abortion. According to an article on Contraceptive use in the United States, “Among U.S. women at risk of unintended pregnancy, the 68% who use contraceptives consistently and correctly throughout the course of any given year account for only 5% of all unintended pregnancies.” (Mosher & Jones 1). Learning to use contraceptives such as; birth control pills, IUDs, etc.; could cause the number of unplanned pregnancies to drop dramatically. For the individuals who end up pregnant with the use of contraception; adoption is another option. Adoption over abortion should be put into consideration when dealing with an unwanted/ unplanned pregnancy. Some may argue that women have a right to their bodies, so therefore abortions should be legal. Others may argue that since life began at conception, abortion should not be a legal option. Although, as human beings having rights to one’s own body is considered ethical; believing that the unborn has a right to life is also considered ethical. If murder, in general, is considered foul and against ethics, then why should abortion be thought of any different? Therefore, abortion should not be legal, just as murder is considered illegal.

Arguments

Abortion reduces the number of babies available for adoption. Fertility issues are very common for women that are of “childbearing” age. “Abortions should be illegal, because not only is it murder but it is also in a way taking away a child that could’ve very well been placed into a home with a woman who suffers from fertility issues.” (Mosher & Jones 1). Banning abortion would just overall create another crime that is punishable by law, and result in more citizens going to prison. “Once abortions become illegal people will just find another way to have it done illegally; back-alley abortions would just resurface and become more popular, which could cause an increase of early death among women.” (Basset 1) There are various reasons as to why abortions should be legal. For instance, marijuana is still illegal in a few states, but it does not stop its citizens from selling, distributing and using this illegal substance. "We know that prohibition and criminalization will never stop women from having abortions," said Lynn Paltrow, executive director of National Advocates for Pregnant Women. "Illegal, self-abortion is a form of civil disobedience. Women will violate unjust laws and bear the health risks and the legal consequences, without causing harm to the people or institutions that make their decisions criminal." (Bassett 1)

It has been observed that some women go through abortions for medical reasons; some pregnancies become high- risk pregnancies, where life or death may come into play (Marchick 1). If abortion was banned, then a woman would have no choice but to go into labor regardless of known complications. Which could result in the death of the mother, and possibly the fetus also? That is why it is important to be able to have a choice when considering abortion. “There are instances in pregnancy when it is clear a miscarriage is going to happen. Typically, within the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, this most often occurs when no fetal heartbeat can be detected by ultrasound or heartbeat monitor.” (Marchick 1). Denying someone an abortion when it is concerning one’s health is unethical. In general, a woman should have rights to her own body. It is contradictory that when a pregnant woman is killed, it is considered a double homicide. Why would it be considered a double homicide if the baby inside the womb is not considered human? Recently, there was a case where a soon to be mother was charged with manslaughter because she got into an altercation, which resulted in her getting shot in the stomach and losing her baby. "A 27-year-old Alabama woman was indicted on manslaughter charges Wednesday in the loss of her pregnancy, even though, police say, another woman pulled the trigger." (Michael & Horton, 1) Abortion in such a scenario cannot be vindicated and should be considered as “manslaughter,” which is illegal and punishable by law.

Conclusion

In conclusion, abortion is a sensitive subject for many. Although abortions are unethical, and a form of murder. Abortions could also be deemed as ethical when obstacles such as medical conditions come into play. Everyone can agree that abortions in general consist of taking away life without fetal consent whether proven to be alive at conception or not. The pros and cons of abortion are never argument. Abortion, a problem or a solution?
