In reading this article I used using a mix of three approaches including Previewing, Contextualizing and Reflecting on challenges to your beliefs and values approach. At first, I preview the text and get the idea that the author is talking about information retrieving strategies, and the targeted audience is students. Then I read the text through the lens of my own experience and then analyze that if I had to memorize some information I prefer to recall and practice it more. I also used to outline and summarize the things so that I can make a difference between the main idea of retrieval, and the supporting ideas for how to learn and retrieve.
