Historical Context And A Closer Look At Setting
Q1: The setting that is place and time, is very vital to the story as it has an immense effect on the plot and characters of the story. It helps in setting the mood of the audience and foreshadows events.
Place includes location of the story in which the story takes place. It includes physical description of the environment to evoke feelings in the audience.
Time can create certain moods and it can even create suspense in the story. It also helps in understanding the psychological and sociological norms of the society in which the story takes place.
Q2b: Setting does not tell about the action of the story. The action revolves around the characters of the story and not on the setting of the story.
Q3a: Louisiana is located along the Gulf of Mexico. It can be found at a latitude of 30.9843° N and 91.9623° W. It is a Southeastern state. It is surrounded by three states namely Arkansas, Texas, and Mississippi. The weather is humid and subtropical. Winters are much shorter than the summers and the climate is extremely warm.
B: I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and it takes 20 hours 55minutes to travel from my home to Louisiana, America. Hamilton is a Canadian port city on the western tip of Lake Ontario. The city has forest ridges and waterfalls that divide the city. Both the cities are very developed and rich in greenery. As it is obvious that both the cities are located in two different countries, so there is a little difference between cultures.
C: Louisiana is situated at the Gulf of Mexico and at the edge of the Mississippi River and is bordered by Arkansas. Louisiana’s Capital city is Baton Rouge.
Q4a: In 1862 on 22 September, President Abraham Lincoln signed a formal proclamation which declared that all slaves in the United stated shall be free forever. He freed approximately 4 million people from slavery.
B: The Civil rights movement began in the late 1940s. The movement was organized to end racial discrimination. It ended in the late1960s. The movement was nonviolent and it protected the rights of all Americans regardless of their color, gender, and race.
Q5a: Plantation refers to the pre-American civil war. The subtropical climate, fertile soils, and genocide of Native Americans allowed establishments in Southern America where Africans were held as slaves and forced to work in fields.
B: The plantation system was based on slavery despite the fact that it was immoral. It gave rise to the Civil war which finally abolished slavery and plantation.
C: Segregation is the practice of requiring separate housing and other facilities for non-white people. The law was passed during the 18th and 19th centuries stating that the white and black people cannot live together.
D: Supreme Court laid the foundation of a separate but equal law that stated that people of different races must stay away from each other but they should have equal opportunities like white people. If they had no right to go to public schools and churches, it just means that they have separate schools and churches especially made for them.
