My Identity
Over the course of my life, I have had many experiences which made me who I am today. Family, culture, and friends play a significant role in shaping a person's identity. Some of the factors have more influence than others. My identity is also shaped by these factors. I belong to Nepal, a country which gives immense importance to family and religion. Currently, I am an international student at North Lake College and living in Irving, Texas. Though my identity has the influence of many factors such as my personality, important relationships and religious beliefs, and my ethnic background Family is the most important aspect of my identity as it has an immense impact on who I am today.
I opened my eyes in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. My homeland is famous for the Himalayas and its unique and diverse culture. It lies inside a valley surrounded by the famous city of temples and Himalayas. My community exists in the outskirts of Kathmandu. Visitors to Kathmandu can easily spot many Hindu and Buddhist temples. We are a family of four members, including my mother, father, sister, and myself. My father is a businessman who owns a fancy shop and my mother also supports family business along with managing the household. My sister is elder than me and she peruses a master's degree in entomology.
My appearance also reveals the fact that I am Asian. I have brown colored skin, black hair and dark eyes and I resemble a lot with my family members, especially my father. I am five feet and five inches tall. My physical features are highly impacted by my genes. As mentioned earlier, I am an international student and came to Texas to pursue a degree in electrical engineering. The reason for choosing this degree program is my interest in this field of study. In addition, one more fact which pushes me to pursue a degree in electrical engineering is that in my country, technology is emerging as a great power, and it has many opportunities for electrical engineers. The near future will need proper management of electricity usage and I believe as an electrical engineer I can help my country and its government of Nepal in better energy management and deal with technological advancement. This is what my family and my parents expect from me.
Besides, I also want to collaborate with Global peace foundation, with which I was previously involved, to come with a project that could help street people of Pashupatinath area, in my district, in employment and setting back to the community. Coming from a small caring family, I have learned to give importance to career development and family. My family is very important for me, my relationship with my sister is more like a friend. We are always ready to help and support each other. My family is also very supportive of my decisions. Being the only son of my family, I am loved and cherished by everyone. My family’s support has enabled me to travel, move, and work towards my passion.
Immense love and care form family made me a bit weaker and started depending on others. However, being an international student I have gained a lot of confidence and I have developed trust in myself. Previously I was very shy but now I have improved myself. Living abroad and managing life on my own has taught me different lessons. My family is proud of me. Coming from a loving and caring family has also made me a generous, kind, caring and loving towards others. I feel hurt on others pain and agony and I wish I could do something to relieve them of their pain and miseries.
I am not a fan of franchise food, I believe it has lost its originality and taste. It has reduced the importance of food cooked by the passionate coo, which I love the most. My mother cooks the most delicious food which will always remain my favorite. Taste in her hand and the love and charm of eating together with family has reduced the importance of franchise food for me. John Mayer is my role model who is a versatile songwriter, and an astonishing guitarist. His traditional approach to music gives me the inspiration to pursue my life with passion and dedication. He inspires me a lot. I and my family loves music and me and my sister like this artist a lot.
One of the biggest regrets of my life is that I did not participate in music competitions. I am very passionate about music and I am an aspiring guitarist as well. Despite several opportunities, I got to go into music I could not pursue music because I was uncertain about the career opportunities in music in Nepal. My family also wanted me to pursue a career which could help me to make a contribution to my country and community.
To conclude I am a middle-class Nepali, whose identity is highly shaped by family, traditions and the area from where I belong. My family has influenced my personality, appearance, goals in life, my relationships, likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests, and religious beliefs as well. I have a never-ending love of music and passion for helping others. This passion has become the stimulator and has pushed me to travel to learn, get an education and develop an understanding of people from around the world.
