Two Kinds
The story is named "Two kinds" because it is based on the story of mother and daughter where the mother had some expectations from her daughter. When the daughter failed to fulfill the mother's expectation due to lack of attention, her mother categorized daughters into two kind one who is obedient and others who follow their own mind.
The main theme of the story is the difference and conflicts of culture and expectations between daughter and mother. Mother had faulty English, for instance, "Not the best. Because you not trying." and "Only ask you be your best for your sake. You think I want you to be genius? Hnnh! What for! Who ask you!” The addition of these faulty sentences was to highlight that mother was basically from China, left everything behind and came to America. Her Chinese-American daughter had different culture and beliefs according to the society she was living in.
In a scene, the daughter saw herself in the mirror and saw her face reflection. She was angry, sad, and disappointed at the same time as she was unable to answer the question that her mother asked. She felt she is not intelligent and ugly. After crying, she looked back at the mirror, and this time she was calm, certain , and absolute upon her decision that she would not try to do anything that she can't just to fulfill her mother expectation.
The two strong-willed characters in the story were pitted to each other because both had different expectations and point of view. Mother tried to impose her expectations and ideas on her daughter while the daughter tried to find herself in her own way.
The story "two kinds" is well defined as the difference in culture, age, and expectations. Mother and daughter were right and wrong at the same time. Mother wanted her daughter to be something, but she tried to impose it on her daughter. While daughter first tried to fulfill her mother expectations but later she adopted the same stubbornness as her mother had.
