Should Athletes be paid in College?
College sports are a significantly large industry. The students playing sports spend a lot of time on the field rather than studying. Not only that the coaches of college teams are heavily paid. But even though students work hard to earn their college some heavy extra bucks, they are not rewarded at all. They should be compensated for their efforts and there are several reasons for that. Firstly, most of them are on scholarships. The money earned through ticketing and television endorsements goes in to pay the expense incurred on their scholarships by the college administration. But that does not mean that it is fair to the students. They usually get one-sixth of the money they earn for their college. Secondly, they spend a lot more time in the field than they do in their classrooms. The glamour that the college administration associated with college sporting events puts extra pressure on the college athletes. The effort should give them a status equivalent to that of a full-time job. According to NCAA, a college football player spends about forty-three hours on the field per week to practice and train CITATION NCA18 \l 1033 (NCAA, 2018). This is extremely unfair as a forty-hour per week person generally gets paid for his services but a college does not. Lastly, and most importantly, they should get paid because coaches take a large slice of the share earned by the college administration with the help of these college stars CITATION Ste18 \l 1033 (Steve Berkowitz, 2018). This sets a double-standard on the part of the college administration that the guy who contributes the most is left out of the spoils. In short, the college sports players put their sweat and blood for the honor of their college. True, their college scholarships cover the cost of food and rent, but it is highly unfair to not pay anything that puts in more effort in the college-level sporting events than an average forty-hour working individual.
