Supernatural drama is a genre that deals with elements which are believed to have supernatural abilities. Such elements like gods, ghosts, goddesses, and even miracles bring a picture of religion in the plot. Its main characteristic is suspense and an emphasis on the uncertainty leading the audience to expect anything out of the ordinary. Focusing on the structural features of a supernatural drama, there is the plot, the setting, and characters and their roles. All these when developed well lead to the creation of a great story.

Vampires Diaries is one of the most watched supernatural drama with a well-developed plot with the main character being Elena. At an early age she lost her parents to a fatal road accident. She was then forced to move to her aunt’s place together with her younger sister, Margaret. Elena is portrayed as a cool girl who commanded attention from both boys and girls. She is described as blonde and slender, a girl who was in complete control of her innermost feelings ("Vampire Diaries (TV Series 2009?2017)"). Despite all the admiration from her peers, she remained controlled and collected. But along the story came one handsome man from Italy known as Stefan who changed everything. She suddenly develops a deep and profound desire for this boy that led her to helplessly loose her cool. The story continues to give the accounts of Elena trying to attract the attention of this boy at all cost. She started fantasizing about this Stefan holding in high regard for the rare qualities he had.

According to her, Stefan was a combination of intelligence, great looks and distant mysterious demeanor. What she did not know about Stefan, is that he was more than 500 years older than Elena. Stefan was a vampire who had renounced the world of darkness and wanted to live away from shadows after century long stay in darkness, loneliness and self-hatred. He wanted to live amongst humans again in a bid to forget the torments in his past life ("Vampire Diaries (TV Series 2009?2017)"). He had a dark and painful past which made him live with guilt in the dark side.

The plot continues to tell how Stefan felt a very powerful and overwhelming connection with Elena, but he also realizes that Elena has an almost perfect similarity with his former girlfriend, Katherine who happens to be the cause of his torments in the dark side where he lived. It is one of the reasons he was renouncing his living in darkness.

Katherine is the one who turned him to a vampire together with his brother Damon. They were both in love with her about 500 years ago. She then committed suicide leaving the two brothers blaming each other for her death leading to a fight which ended to death ("Elena Gilbert (novel)"). It reaches a point Elena learns the truth about Stefan, and the whole school and the community start accusing him of the mysterious deaths in town. But she refuses to believe that Stefan can be responsible for doing such things. She defends him against the claims.

The setting of the story is in a small town known as Mystic Fall Virginia, the original town of the two brothers, Stefan and Damon. Part of the series takes place in Fells town where Elena and her aunt who took them in lived ("Elena Gilbert (novel)"). The school where they studied also plays a crucial part in the story since it is where Elena and Stefan first met.

The characters in this drama include Elena gilbert as the main character and the protagonist of the story. She also happens to be Katherine, the same girl Stefan and Damon died for. Stefan Salvador and Damon Salvador were brothers and lovers of Elena. They fought to death after being incited by Elena. Some characters in the story were, Bonnie McCullough who was Damon’s best friend. Meredith Sulez and Caroline Forbes, friends turned foes. Matt Honeycutt who was a childhood friend and first love to Caroline. Katherine von Swartzschild, the niece to Robert and Judith Maxwell, and the older sister of Margaret Gilbert.
