Analytical Essay
Among the contemporary poets, Rupi Kaur is one of the famous among the modern generation. She writes words which touch the soul of the readers, and they can relate to the themes that she represents. She is also famous for book tours. She travels around the world to see her fans and to read them live poetry from her books. She has an incredible authenticity and the vulnerability of subjects like abuse, femininity, love, loss, identity, and beauty. We will analyze two of her poems critically. One is It was when I stopped searching for a home in others, and the other is “I want to apologize to all the women”. These two poems written by her like all her other poems have a deep thought to provoke subjects and an underlying theme that is profound and meaningful. Also, there are many similarities in both the poems.
The first poem that I selected is “I want to apologize to all the women”. This poem is written in standard American English. She has not used the “dictionary words” rather the repeated the use of “i” in lower case all through the poem. The poem is portrayed in first person and the narrator is here assuming the lower case “i.” individuals to be admired in this verse are all the females, the speaker, although she reiterated references ‘i’, make use of the ‘i’ to display her embarrassment, and exhibit her feebleness before these intellectual or courageous females. theme of the poem is the strength of the women that they possess. This poem was written by the poet in the spirit of the international day of women. The poet is putting the point that women are much more than their outer appearances. The qualities of women that need to be appreciated are their bravery and intellect. The poet says that before calling them beautiful, they need to be called resilient and extraordinary. She has abundantly written upon the theme of feminism, and that theme is manifested in this very poem. Talking about rhythm, there is no specific rhythm or the rhyming scheme that she follows in her poem. It is particular to the poems of Rupi Kaur. As far as the use of the imagery is concerned, she has not made the use of such imagery in this poem.
The other poem “it was when I stopped searching for home within others”, is again regarding the profound themes and ideas. The poem opens with the dichotomies, which are brought together in the few initial lines, and is not found in the finishing line: phrases and words such as “home”, “foundation”, “roots” and “mind and body” they all have inverses, on the other hand, the last expression of the verse gives the solution to all these skirmishes, by determining that the speaker has preferred to be “whole.” clashes of the initial verses, fixed in the last line. The theme of the poem is self-realization, independence, and self-reliance. The poet is here trying to convince the audience that people need to be self-sufficient and self-dependent. They do not need to rely upon others. A lot of people devote their lives trying to gain pleasure and part of that is looking for a place they can call home. Few might reflect about it as a dwelling, others a church, and yet others a partner or a communal. Rupi Kaur is proposing to end “searching for home within others” and to discover home inside their very own self. To find contentment only from one’s own self and not from any other people or substantial belongings or anything besides this world is a hard job for Kaur to put on the reader. She puts forward that we fly in face of the customs of the social order, of discovering the happiness in cash and other material things, but somewhat she wishes us to discover happiness inside ourselves. She asks readers to look for joy from our personal original concepts, humor, and through our own body. Rupi proceeds further by stating people don’t want to merely catch home within themselves, however, to "be whole" they should link the “mind and body” composed as single.
She uses the metaphor of roots for the connection of mind and body. She says that people need to get this connection between their mind and body to become one whole. This way only they can make their own decision. The rhyming scheme of the poem again is not any specific. She, in fact, has not followed any rhyming scheme, and the poem is not written in any rhythm. The use of Imagery is also not abundant. She used just two metaphors of home and roots.
Both the poems are representing specific ideas that are of social, as well as spiritual importance. The first poem starts off with a confusing tone, then by the middle it takes an empowering note, and at the end, it again represents an apologetic, and kind attitude. While the other poem represents the determination and the resolution of the poet. She is asking the audience too to stand up for themselves, and to find their happiness within themselves. If we talk about the biographical context, the poet clearly writes in the light of her past experiences. She was raped and abused, and not treated well by those whom she loved, that’s why such themes are prevalent in her poetry. She writes about feminism, love, and other social themes, which is reflective in both the poems.
