Personal Comment of Mock Trial
I "porter," a gatekeeper of the devil house think that Macbeth is guilty and innocent. He committed murder, but he is not evil. The night when Duncan got murdered, I was on duty of hell gate. At night somebody knocked on the gate. Other guards and I were drunk; that is why it took a while to respond. I went to the gate and said who is there? Then I saw MacDuff at the entrance. As I responded too late, it made Mr. Macbeth awake, and he came down to see who there outside at that time. When Macbeth and Macduff discovered the dead body of Duncan in his room, I witnessed the guilty, sorrow and sadness on Macbeth's face. I think if he was not guilty, then he will never come to the gate that night to find out who is outside, instead he would stay in his room.
I think he is innocent because he did not want to do any murder. He committed this crime because of three witches and his wife who forced her to commit that evil crime for the sake of power. He did not want to murder the guards either. He had to kill them to hide his awful sin. I think he was unable to overcome what he just did. He just not killed the king and guards; he murdered his peace of mind and relaxed life. His soul is not in peace. He is ashamed of his action. I think he should be considered innocent because of all of these reasons. The three witches used him to fulfill their plan. His wife is also responsible for making him a murderer. Without them, he would never give any harm to others especially Duncan, who trusted him and always praised him.
