Political correctness
Introduction
Political correctness is a process in which words are used carefully so that they won't hurt others. In every sort of environment, political correctness has become important especially environments where people share their personal opinions for overpowering others who may disagree with them. Political correctness has positive as well as negative perceptive attached with it. t restricts words and actions of those individuals who share their views or opinions publically Such as comedians, writer, politicians and many more which is considered to be the negative aspect of political correctness. People mostly in their conversations use such expressions and words that hurt others but political correctness demands them to avoid unfair things could be offense for others. Political correctness save people from many unhealthy and discriminating things and is considered to be the positive aspect of political correctness (Mirrlees,et,al,2018). people are being marginalized, insulted and discriminated by discussing a certain topic like racism, religion, culture etc. Various environments or settings require the observance of political correctness and classroom is one of these settings or environments. Bringing students close to each other is the main aim of political correctness in the classroom.
Body
Nowadays societies have become heterogeneous. Mixed cultures give a push to the movements that would use race, culture and gender difference for ceasing the violent actions against specific groups of people such as immigrants, disabled and minorities. International studies have become latest trend and students from different countries move aboard for getting education where they interact with people of other cultures. Discussions are compulsory part of any class for clearing things to students. Students from different race, sex, nation, culture and religions could be found in a class. In situation where students are different from each other, implementation of political correctness becomes crucial for keeping the atmosphere of classroom healthy (Ma,et,al,2017). Concept of political correctness spots light on certain principles and structures that should be followed for perusing a specific and desired social behavior.
Some students want to have a discussion on such issues that are being blacklisted by native speakers or students. For heterogeneous classroom where students of various cultures, classes, religions and areas study together political correctness becomes compulsory. It would help in bringing students close to each other. Observance of political correctness would ultimately reduce distances by promoting cooperation among students that would ultimately have positive effects on performance of all the students. Policy of political correctness must have the following thing points.
Discrimination among students should be discouraged. Students who would target others with their expression, actions and words would face serious consequences. Everyone is expected to respect others personal belonging and cultural values. When any student would relate or quote his background or culture, no one would counter question about this culture or background as it discourages students for quoting their native things as examples. Every student would be welcomed and appreciated for opening up other sides of the topic that others ignored.
There are certain boundaries that political correctness impose on the speaker so that other students could be protected (King,et,al,2018). The first boundary that has been imposed by political correctness is “no right to criticize overweight people”. There are various examples witnessed in class discussion that some students try to manipulate things and despite talking on logics and evidences they present things wrongly that would only work in their favor. This boundary of political correctness to not criticize overweight students is a threat to freedom of speech. Even students who have evidence-based logics have to keep silence for respecting the classroom environment. It could be rightly said that this boundary of political correctness not to fire back overweight people should be revised or eliminated for protecting freedom of speech of other students who want to have healthy and logical discussion in class.
Another boundary of political correctness is “not to target students on the basis of their culture and religion”. Students belonging to various cultures and religions when gather in one classroom, it becomes the responsibility of each student not to point out things about other’s cultures and religion that could be offensive. Analysis has spotted a light on the fact that one concept could be represented and explained in various ways, so no one in a classroom discussion is allowed to oppose the cultural or spiritual perceptive of a student on a topic that he would explain from his cultural or religious point of view. Belief system of students could be different from each other. So it won't be wrong to say that boundary of political correctness for not targeting students belonging to other cultures and religions must be promoted in class (Greene,et,al,2019). This boundary would allow and encourage students to openly put their feelings and point of view about a certain subject, issue or topic that would provide a great opportunity to other students to learn how a certain topic is looked upon in a culture or religions.
The third boundary that has been imposed by political correctness is “discouraging stereotypes”. One of the main thing that one could witness in a class where students of different culture, nations, race, religion and sex study together is categorization. Political correctness in the classroom discourages stereotypes. Attitude of categorizing people on the basis of their religion, sex and race etc. is not appreciated in political correctness. For example, if a Muslim student is studying in a class it is absolutely wrong to think that he/she one day would have a bomb in his/her bag (Woessner,et,al,2019). Likewise, it is wrong to consider a female student weak for doing any physical activity just by considering her gender. Treating a black student inhumanely considering him/her slave is also racial stereotype. Political correct analyses and tries to eliminate stereotypes in class discussion so that students could get an opportunity to mix up with each other like a family where no student is going to be looked upon and discriminated on the basis of his race, religion, gender and culture etc.
Conclusion
Keeping in consideration policy of political correctness and its benefits numbers of positive outcomes in classroom discussion could be witnessed. If readers are going to adopt points discussed in the policy political correctness that are mentioned above environment of classroom could be improved for discussions. If students are going to accept others point of views open-heartedly, they would be able see other important sides of a problem, topic or subject that they might be missing before. By acting upon the policy of political correctness they would be able to promote cooperation and unity in class that would encourage students to actively participate in the class discussion. One of the most considerable benefits that students are going to have if they are going to act on the policy of political correctness is improvement of grades. Class discussion is important for absorbing and understanding an academic concept. When students would be given chances to share their views about a specific topic or issue they would have a better understanding of that topic which would ultimately help them in securing good grades in class. So as a whole, it could be concluded that political correctness in class discussion is important for creating a peaceful and friendly environment.
