Title: In Favor of Adoption
Child adoption refers to the legal process or act of accepting a child born of another couple to one’s family usually in a manner that the child becomes part of the adoptive family. While most adoption cases involve adoptive parents that are infertile, there are a number of reasons why people give their children for adoption today, such as in the case of an unexpected pregnancy. A number of questions and doubts are commonly raised with regards to whether adoption is a safer alternative to single parenting or adoption or whether it will benefit every person involved in the triad. In this paper, the benefits of adoption will be discussed for the adoptive parents as well as the child being placed for adoption.
One of the primary drives behind adoption is that it can save orphaned, distressed or neglected children from having a bleak future. A number of reasons such as disease or poverty could lead to a situation where the birth parents cannot provide a good life for the child. A weak economic situation can impede a child's development, education or opportunity to grow up in a healthy environment with adequate safety and nutrition. Therefore, for such children, placing the child for adoption can save him or her by extending to them the loving support of adoptive parents who are financially and emotionally prepared to meet the needs of the child.
A number of advantages exist for birth mothers in this regard. For many, it can provide room for them to achieve other goals in life, or pursue higher education, while the child is adopted by a loving family who provides them a happy and safe home to live in. In this regard, an open adoption program allows the birth mother to remain part of her child’s life allowing them to continue interacting with their child as they remain cared for by their respective adoptive parents CITATION Ado19 \l 1033 (Adoption Choice).
Moreover, those children that are orphaned or neglected due to particular circumstances would be provided an opportunity to do better in life by allowing them to receive nurturing and support from caring families who can remove them from a bleak situation, and provide adequate love and support that they need. A stable home with committed parents, in turn, provide adopted children with resources and opportunities unavailable to them previously.
In many circumstances, women becoming unexpectedly pregnant can be a distressful situation. Consequently, the pregnancy, which could not be aborted for certain reasons could halt her career, education and other life goals. In addition to that, she may or may not have a supportive partner or the necessary finances needed to raise the child in a healthy manner. Therefore, placing the child for adoption can improve their potential for success in later life, especially in the case of unwed mothers. This was confirmed from several studies which found that those women who chose to place their infants for adoption had a higher likelihood to finish school, more likely to stay married, have a lesser probability to divorce, and subsequently smaller likelihood of remaining in poverty in comparison to those women that chose to raise the child as a single parent CITATION McL88 \l 1033 (McLaughlin, Manninen and Winges). Furthermore, the study also found that many women found an opportunity for employment nearly a year after their baby, placed for adoption, was born.
To conclude, the decision for adoption is, nevertheless, not an easy one to make. However, birth mothers should evaluate the potential benefits against the costs. Although, all those who are involved in the process for adoption may find themselves facing unique challenges, the many benefits that adoption bring along offset those challenges. The benefits that come with adoption are proven to be positively life-changing for both the adoptive parents as well as birth parents, and options such as open-adoption allow both parents to remain a part of their children’s lives.
