Title A visit to an Eskimo Village in Alaska
Name
As someone who loves traveling, I always aspire to explore places with unfamiliar cultures, climatic conditions and people with unique characteristics. This is why Ive always wanted to visit an Eskimo village. My mind wanders to the Eskimo village in Alaska. This is where I intend to seek more knowledge and experiences. I have heard a lot about the Eskimo village. Here are several things I intend to find out about the village in Alaska.
The village attracts few visitors across its annual calendar.
This is one of the reasons I want to visit the place. I dont like crowded places. The fact that I can enjoy a quiet walk in the Alaskan bush endears me to the village.
There are so many dogs in the Eskimo village.
I love dogs. My favorite pet is a dog named Tommy. The thought of encountering so many dogs in one area excites me a lot. Im told the dogs roam freely in the village. Who knows I might even get to adopt one
There are unique sports activities among the Inuit people.
The types of games played in the village are different from the games we are used to. We play football, tennis, basketball, hockey, among many other games. However, sports in the village involve physical activities geared towards equipping the residents with survival skills. It will be informative and interesting to be involved in such kind of sporting activities.
Unique relationships and sexual behavior
The Eskimos culture is interestingly unique. Ive read that it is hard to get into a relationship. Rumor has it that the spirit of sharing is so rife in the village that Eskimo men share wives. As someone who loves learning new cultures, a visit to the village will help me document the process of relationships and marriage among the Eskimos.
History of the Eskimos
There are controversial reports about the native occupants of North America. Im keen to find out facts about the origin of the Eskimos residing in Alaska.
One bright morning I booked a flight from Nome to the Eskimo village located on the Bering Sea. I boarded a taxi from the airport and went straight to Shishmaref, one of the Eskimo villages inhabited by around 600 people. The town is located on an Island few miles from the mainland. On arrival, the sites were beautiful to behold. It was refreshing to walk along the beach. The people were welcoming and had a great sense of humor. Villagers move around on foot, occasionally in 4-wheelers. The town is a buzz of activities, especially women who line up the streets selling different kinds of meat.
Contrary to earlier argument that the village rarely receives visitors, there were many tourists along the shores. One of the natives informed me that the upsurge of tourists was due to effects of global warming. The major tourist attractions are the polar bears. Before, polar bears were a rare site along the coast. Change in climate has resulted in the bears moving ashore to in search of food. The bears have lost their ability to fight due to the receding sea ice. Im informed that the bears move ashore to scavenge for food. I was lucky enough to spot a few polar bears, and it was such a spectacular site.
I tried to establish a few facts about the origin of the Eskimo people. I learnt that the Eskimos initially inhabited the islands of Canada on the far North. According to Griggs (2014), the Eskimos were among the migrants from Asia. The migration saw the Eskimos move to the North side of Alaska. It is true that the Eskimos were not native inhabitants of the area along the sea.
I established that true to rumors, it was hard for Eskimos to engage in romantic relationships. This is because people were closely related. It was not impossible to marry a cousin. The other interesting culture among the Eskimos was wife sharing. I was informed that this practice has been there since time immemorial. Husband share their wives with guest as a sign of hospitality. Powerful men had the right to other mens wives. I learnt that men who travelled away from home in hunting quests allowed their women to interact with other men. It is important to point out that the Eskimos were non-committal about the practice in modern days. They were quick to inform that things were changing but the culture was embedded among the people. It would therefore take time to do away with these barbaric cultures.
The culture of the Eskimo is explained by Holland-Strauss (2013) who points out that Eskimos culture regarding marriage was borrowed from the Mormons and Muslims who were allowed to marry up to five wives. As I observed, it was culturally right to portray spirit of sharing to strangers by offering them wives.
I got a chance to participate in sports activities in the village. The experience was out of this world. In groups, we had to compete who would make the highest knee jumps. We also practiced Two Foot High Kick. These two activities were meant to test and strengthen the endurance of Eskimos. Sports were geared towards helping hunters endure the harsh Arctic conditions. It was also a form of entertainment and encouraging team spirit.
I was frustrated that I could not adopt a dog from this village. The dogs were in plenty but far from my expectations. I almost got bitten by one as I tried to stroke it. I was informed by guide that dogs in the area were wild. Dogs were used for hunting d helping people maneuver the harsh terrains. Sled dogs helped residents hunt, trap, fish and move about the area.
