GSW Essay

Courtney Moreno wrote about “GSW” in her article “Help is on the way: Tales of an Ambulance Driver.” She wrote about a patient who suffered from a gunshot wound “GSW”. Police found that person in the street who was considered dead as a river of blood was coming out of his head and there was no sign of life due to the severity of the injury. Police identified that patient as John Doe, who was a gang member. Police were busy in searching for clues and pieces of evidence to find the killer. Someone noticed that the body was still breathing as a blood bubbles were popping out of his mouth. By hearing that, Moreno along with his medical team descended to the scene and began to examine the GSW person. The wound by the bullet was severe as it had gone through the occipital lobe of the patient. It was astonishing to see that the part of the brain that was responsible for breathing was unharmed. That was the reason behind the breathing of that person. Moreno made efforts to save the life of that person by applying a bag-valve mask so that the person can easily breathe. On the way to the hospital, a bump removed the trauma dressing from his forehead that was the time when Moreno saw his brain. The person was impossibly alive as his body was still warm. Moreno knew that the patient was going to die, but she was trying her best to save him. However, Moreno’s partner believed that all gang members like him must meet the same fate. Finally, that person died due to the severity of his injury. Moreno had seen in her dream that GSW patient was lying in a corner, cleaned up and no sign of brain or blood, but still, the marks of his wound were seeing.

I believe that Moreno has the dream due to the unbelievable sight of watching GSW patient. Moreno notes, “The bullet had gone through the patient’s occipital lobe”. This quotation shows that patient was badly wounded through the gun, but through some miracle, he was still alive which was astonishing. The part of his brain that was responsible for breathing was not damaged through some miracle. That is the reason which kept him alive. Moreno states, “I saw brain, I kept thinking”. This quotation shows that Moreno had seen the brain of that person when the trauma dressing slipped from his forehead. That sight was terrifying for Moreno as she already afraid of seeing such things. Therefore, the frightful sight of blood discharging from the patient's exit wound made her distressed. Moreno remarks, "My partner didn't think he was worth saving." This quotation shows that her partner had no interest in saving the life of a GSW patient. According to her partner, these gang members are cancer for the society. Therefore, in accordance with her partner, it is a wise thing to let them fight with each other. Moreno wanted to convince him that it is not their job to decide who should live or die, but he was too exhausted to say anything.

Furthermore, I believe the meaning of the dream is to be grateful at the time of death. Moreno says, “There was a clean white room, white walls, and tile floor.” This quotation shows that Moreno saw what happened to the patient after his death. He saw John Doe in a cleaner room and having no sign of blood. This means that John Doe had found peace after his death. Moreno observes, “Every time I nudged him, his body relaxed a little more.” This quotation shows that John Doe got relaxed after his death. The burden of his evil deeds began to fade away as he was getting relaxed after his death. After his death, he was finally getting peace from all evils of the world. Moreno adds, “That smoke, that light was grateful to be going.” This quotation shows that John Doe was grateful to be going from this evil world. All of his ugliness was fading and just his body remained behind. The smoke and light that was coming from his body were freeing him from all the tensions and ugliness of the world.
