Introduction
This story Trifles is written by "Susan Glaspell” about a murder investigation of Mr John Wright. It is an early feminist drama in which Mrs Peters and Mrs Hales sympathize Mr John's wife (victim). They got evidence (a dead bird) and hide it.
A sheriff and an attorney general were investigating the murder at John Wright’s farmhouse. Mr Wright was strangled with a rope and her wife claimed that she was sleeping when he got murdered. While the men were looking around in the barn, women find a dead bird in a box. This bird has been strangled in the same way as Mr Wright. Mrs Hale and Mrs Peters immediately realized that it was evidence and they hide it. And the men were unable to find any evidence to convict Mrs Wright.
Theme
The theme in Susan Glaspell plays touch upon the loyalty to the same gender, and loyalty to the law. In the play, men believe that women have no identity of their own, and they have granted identity to the women. When they observe the troublesome state in the kitchen, they immediately concluded that Mrs Wright is lacks homemaking abilities. The troublesome state of the kitchen clearly shows signs of domestic violence, but men tried to support their gender. Men claim that they know Mr Wright as a rightful man, and they unified to protect his image. Mrs Hale and Mrs Peters realized that in order to support Mrs Wright, they have to show complete loyalty to their own gender. This was all happening while Mrs Wright was in custody and men were investigating this murder case. The underlying notions of the investigation suggested that the men had significant power in the law over women. They could easily change the perspective and blame thing on women through by imposing a strong imposition the susceptibility of women. They believe that since they are in positions of power and have the authority to exercise the power they could create conclusions without exercising empathy in their spheres of life
On the other hand, women reminisce about Mrs Wright's life before her marriage. Mrs Wright was so happy before her marriage to Mr Wright. They even suspected that Mrs Wright was not happy, and regret that they never visited her. Furthermore, the state of the kitchen was showing clear signs of domestic violence even though the men were trying to protect Mr Wright. All of these factors were the reason that women unified with their gender. When they came across the evidence (a dead bird), they immediately hide it.
Both men and women show loyalty to their gender up to that extent that Mrs Hale and Mrs Peters aiding the murder with no respect for the law. For men, the law is linked with justice and duty. Mrs Peters also had the same thoughts, but heavy-handed methods of investigation practised by men made her change her thoughts. Mrs Hale and Mrs Peters served the law in their own understanding, they dismiss the charges of Mrs Wright in the name of justice and serve their duty as a woman. In the case of men, they believer Mrs Wright as murder without any clear evidence.
Analysis
The fact that women kill men fascinate the ideals of criminology and wake the urge of power in the patriarchal setups, the story illustrates how justice can be prejudice to gender and its role as defined and limited by the society. The challenge remains persistent, it raises the question on the justice system, the sympathies and insights of genders roles perceived. How can the efficacy of injustice be improved by involving the empathetic factor in the justice system? It could also be analyzed that the law enforcement agencies and the investigation teams were being indolent and used the women as their scapegoat to conclude the case. The existence of law yet depicted lawlessness as the murder remained unsolved.
