I witnessed a power struggle between Sara and Bella; both them were my friends and classmates in the school. Since we were kids in the nursery, I have seen these two always tussling with each other on minor issues. Both of them were toppers and bright students. Sara was a single child of her parents while Bella was the only daughter in five sons. Due to their position in the family and extreme intelligence, both always received undivided attention from parents, siblings and teachers. They were the perfect kids that anyone ever wanted. Their existence in the same class ensured that they always stay in competition with each other. Apparently, both were in good terms, but in their hearts, they envied one another. Once we had extracurricular competitions in our school that included competitions regarding debates and racing. From last one year in annual exams, Sara and Bella both were in a tie with each other, and both were frustrated about the situation and opponent. On the day of race competition, Sara out of her envy hid the joggers of Bella. She was unable to find her joggers anywhere and ended up participating in a competition in regular school shoes. Sara won the competition and first time in a year there was no tie and Bella lost the race competition. Later a guy told her that he saw Sara with her joggers. Sara never admitted, but her attitude made it clear that she was the one behind this. This started dirty power struggle between the two and in later months we saw those two hiding each other’s notes, destroying stationary and commenting on each other’s physique. This envy also reached their home and their friend’s circle. They won’t leave any chance to trash talk about each other and slandering turned out to be the new norm for both of them. All teacher who used to love these two started to get annoyed with the constant drama. And it reached a point when other friends and I started to avoid them because of their constant hate and bickering about each other. One day both of them had a huge fight in the cafeteria that involved swearing, slapping and punching. In their fight, they ended up damaging the furniture and belongings of other students. This was the day their power struggle ended. Their greed for dominance and desire for other to loses, became the cause of their downfall. Principal terminated both of them from school for 6 six months on disciplinary charges and didn’t let them appear even in the final exams. Their lack of compassion and patience proved to be the death of their academic career. Their minor tussles turned into hatred. One they were friends and then they turned into enemies. This even made me realize that intelligence, smartness, appreciation, love and support all are temporary and these don’t define success. Real success comes out of ‘attitude.’ Our attitude towards the problems and good events that happen in our life define success. If our attitude is based on hatred and lack of contentment, then it can set us up for failure. As in this case, none of them won and ended up becoming losers despite of their intelligent schemes. This event was a turning point for me and it changed my attitude towards my peers and life in general. Now I am more patient and kind towards people.
