Discussion Activity 4: They Say/I Say Chapters 1-2
It is important to acknowledge larger conversation in academic writing because it improves the credibility of the discussion. It is important for the writers to have knowledge about different perspectives that exists on a specific topic. This prevents them from focusing on a single perspective or side of an argument and thus adds credibility to their discussion. Larger conversation allows them to integrate viewpoints of the opponents and build a comparison with their own specific idea, thus making their discussion more reliable. I also think that this is important because it allows a writer to clarify his position and offer reasoning to the readers for emphasizing on specific viewpoints.
I think that in dialogues with others the speaker must be able to discuss ‘what others are saying?’ This is because the speaker when talks about a specific issue focuses on his personal perspective but fails to integrate the viewpoints of others. This makes his discussion weak because he is ignoring the counter-counter that can be made by the people of opposing views. I believe that this will prevent the speaker form focusing unnecessary on central argument only and neglecting the counter-arguments. An effective dialogue must include larger conversation.
I agree with the post that it is crucial to consider larger conversation when a speaker is attempting to explain something. The focus of amateur writers is on sharing their options only but they fail to shed light on the credibility of the people of opposing views. Larger conversation is based on the idea that it is important for a speaker to give a clear idea to the audience about the topic. This is also an effective strategy adopted by speakers for keeping the audience engaged.
I like the post because it explains the significance of considering the views of the audience. I agree that it is not essential that all listeners agree with the viewpoints of the speaker. It is thus important to integrate the counter-agreement in every discussion. This is a practical way of providing a clear view on different perspectives to the audience. I also agree that the integrity of the speaker is questioned always when audience find that they are inter-linked to politicos. It is thus important to acknowledge opposing views and building comparison with them.
