The Yellow Wallpaper
Introduction:
The yellow paper- a short story which highlights the struggles of feminists for bringing to light the issues that surrounded women in the nineteenth century. This short story is written in the first person pronunciation, in which Charlotte Perkin who is the main character of this story throw light on her struggles and experience of being struggling women in a male-dominated society ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"5x4H0EdY","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Marston and Rockwell)","plainCitation":"(Marston and Rockwell)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":180,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/ZW6CN5BJ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/ZW6CN5BJ"],"itemData":{"id":180,"type":"article-journal","title":"Charlotte Perkins Gilman's “The Yellow Wallpaper”: Rhetorical Subversion in Feminist Literature","container-title":"Women's Studies in Communication","page":"58–72","volume":"14","issue":"2","source":"Google Scholar","shortTitle":"Charlotte Perkins Gilman's “The Yellow Wallpaper”","author":[{"family":"Marston","given":"Peter J."},{"family":"Rockwell","given":"Bambi"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["1991"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Marston and Rockwell). Gilman- who is the writer of this beautiful compilation keeps the readers away from Charlotte throughout the whole story to more impressing throw light on her efforts. The central character, therefore, remains anonymous for the readers throughout the whole story. This anonymity has worked as the readers remain curious about the efforts of Charlotte as to what she wants perfect in her life. Since it is a feminist story and focuses mainly on the women struggles, therefore men’s role has remained to a much narrow extent.
Similarly, when Charlotte is done with nothing much in her life and being not in the position to explore her creativity in her mind, she feels that her mind is not going in the direction she always wanted. She felt as she is losing control of things ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"LtMUePWU","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Suess)","plainCitation":"(Suess)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":182,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/2M6BU34B"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/2M6BU34B"],"itemData":{"id":182,"type":"article-journal","title":"The Writing s on the Wall: Symbolic Orders in The Yellow Wallpaper","container-title":"Women's Studies","page":"79–97","volume":"32","issue":"1","source":"Google Scholar","shortTitle":"The Writing s on the Wall","author":[{"family":"Suess","given":"Barbara A."}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2003"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Sues). Her mental illness is gradually taking hold of her creativity and her inability to not convey her thoughts is turning permanent. That is where the story takes the twist and she gradually starts to think her diminishing abilities. The last and one of the major aspect of this story is the gender roles also, as to how the gender roles and notably the “Patriarchy”, of that time in the society, pushed the creative sense of her away. This appears to be the main reason why Charlotte remained apprehensive of the men’s role. For her men’s abilities will never easily allow any women to take the full benefit of her inner abilities. The abilities- especially that exist in her mind like creativity. She pushes her readers while being anonymous to not allow any physical or material barrier to stop from them to be open and creative for the world.
The Context of the thesis:
The madness inside a human mind does not shed away the creative aspects of the human mind, nor does it take away the expressions of anyone’s words.
When the reader comes close to the anonymous character of Charlotte, he just gets hold of the things in an opposite manner. For example, for any reader, when it comes to this part of the reading, Charlotte had become mad and has now nothing in her hand. This is where the thesis statement outlined above, makes sense. For example, this is not enough for any reader to just think of life as ruined when anyone has not fully taken advantage of the creativity of his or her mind. This proves and makes a plot for the human mind that does not sheds away the creativity that much easier. Body starts from the following paragraphs, you can remove this highlighted part.
The Feminist aspect of the Yellow Wallpaper
Since the whole story covers the role of Charlotte as being suppressed and one who is not being allowed to practice her feelings as according to her thoughts. There then appears two perspectives of this story. The one being a typical feminist thinking I.e. she is being made suppressed and she is is not allowed to take on the advantages of her abilities. The second perspective is about the relation of this story with the present scenario. Does there are Charlotte's today? Are they being made suppressed, in these sophistications of today? This is then one tends to look after his or her surrounding environment where a Charlotte is present ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"KlLbON79","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Gilman)","plainCitation":"(Gilman)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":185,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/IGKFI646"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/IGKFI646"],"itemData":{"id":185,"type":"article-journal","title":"Why I wrote The Yellow Wallpaper?","container-title":"Advances in psychiatric treatment","page":"265–265","volume":"17","issue":"4","source":"Google Scholar","author":[{"family":"Gilman","given":"Charlotte Perkins"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2011"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Gilman), Where anyone is experiencing the ruining of his or her abilities. This is how a Charlotte can even be found in some men of this world too.
Why first person pronunciation?
The complete story does not reveal who is exactly behind the words- or the scenes in the minds of the readers. This benefits in many ways. For example, it helps in bringing the readers more closely. When no one gets the idea of the words of the character, everyone comes close to this character, everyone thinks of him or herself as being the character of the story and as being the one who is being taken away into the harsh realities of this world. The Yellow Wallpaper has employed an unconventional way of making everyone a character of the story first- and then every one to rethink of their inner abilities. This is how everyone comes close to this reading and makes himself or herself the Charlotte of the Yellow Wallpaper.
Creativity and Madness- The Duo
Just for every human, his or her mental abilities are super important. As everyone controls his abilities, his attitudes and his way of life through the mind. This is where also, creativity exist. For Gilman, this duo of mind and creativity is everything. Not always is that creativity is hidden anywhere, it is also possible that anyone else might be taking advantage of your creativity. For example, one should always think of life first of all for its own utilization. As to how he or she can yield advantage of her or his own abilities ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"Nd83HtKu","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(N\\uc0\\u250{}\\uc0\\u241{}ez-Puente)","plainCitation":"(Núñez-Puente)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":189,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/B99YFCR2"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/B99YFCR2"],"itemData":{"id":189,"type":"article-journal","title":"The Yellow Hybrids: Gender and Genre in Gilman's Wallpaper","container-title":"DQR Studies in Literature","page":"139","volume":"49","source":"Google Scholar","shortTitle":"The Yellow Hybrids","author":[{"family":"Núñez-Puente","given":"Carolina"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2012"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Nunez-Puente). Then comes the outer world, where different concepts exist to take on an advantage of others. For example the concept of the patriarchy, one where a male has every right to control the female feelings. This is not as good as according to Gilman. Though the writer opens up late, it still remains important that one might utilize the creative aspect of himself for just his own benefit. Let the rest of the world be of secondary importance.
The Gender depiction in the Yellow Wallpaper
The gender has remained mainly away from the readers. An anonymous character has taken over the gender role of this character. This is not like the typical story, in which once when the characters have been opened, everyone makes their own perception of things. In the Yellow Wallpaper, every reader remains focused on the words unless the reader opens up- as the ruined female soul. This gender anonymity and also the gender disclosure is the primary aspect of this reading. They both keep the readers intact towards the story. One other advantage of keeping the character anonymous is the manipulation of creativity regardless of the male and female. For the readers of this story, the mental attributes remain free from gender roles ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"42WokuVL","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Flynn and Schweickart)","plainCitation":"(Flynn and Schweickart)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":187,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/FQL5H2IP"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/FQL5H2IP"],"itemData":{"id":187,"type":"article-journal","title":"Gender and Reading Essays on Readers, Texts, and Contexts","source":"Google Scholar","author":[{"family":"Flynn","given":"Elizabeth A."},{"family":"Schweickart","given":"Patrocinio P."}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["1986"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Flynn and Schweickart). This is where the story has taken an unconventional style of a short novel.
Conclusion
The Yellow Wallpaper for the reader is not just a short story. It has more than that for everyone who wants to become Charlotte of this short script. For becoming the central character of this story, firstly one needs to bring himself close to the soul of his own self, secondly, he has to think about accepting himself the ultimate soul which has every creation in the mind, and lastly one has to rebuild himself regardless of the norms of the world. This is different and this is the recipe of how one can be successful in this world.
Reiterating thesis
The madness has nothing to do with the creativity of one’s mind. Whether it be the mental disorders or any other such aspect, one needs to be open to himself. Here is how one can be open to his self. The creativity is like a free thing that cannot be kept close. It is what is generally free, and this is the reason why the creativity and madness fells at two opposite ends. Similarly, the words inside the human minds are kept away, regardless of the situation in mind. The connotations of the words are different and not for every situation. This is also how words never disappoint any situation.
Final comments
The yellow wallpaper is the story that is for everyone. First, the writer has taken out the expressions from the words of this story. By doing this the writer makes everyone float according to the will of the writer and the readers enjoy those swings. In fact, the readers at first enjoy the sound environment be developed for the characters to play. Secondly, the writer has introduced an unknown human into the story. This anonymity pleases everyone, as every reader tends to think that he is the actual human of that story. This is how the writer makes the readers love a hidden character. Thirdly, no gender has been introduced until Charlotte is introduced. This genderless attribute also makes the reader love themselves more as being a male or female. This is how Charlotte is a male for males and female or female.
